Subject: Chris--Shirtless or not!

I read an interview somewhere about the early Seattle music scene, where
someone (can9t remember who) said that Chris was always something of a
sex symbol, and it was cool in the beginning because he was unaware of
it. Later, however, he started becoming self-conscious about it. It
seems to me that he continued to go along with this image, whatever the
reason, even though he may not have been totally comfortable with it.
Yes, he did pose shirtless for a lot of photos, and no, he wasn9t forced
to do it. But when every article about SG started to mention his looks,
I think at some point he decided that this wasn9t the image he wanted
for himself or the rest of the band. You9ll notice that he cut his hair
and stopped taking his shirt off at about the same time. Soundgarden
never really liked being referred to as a metal band, anyway, so I9m
sure they felt having a singer who is regarded as a major sex god makes
them look to many people like even more of a stereotypical heavy metal9
band, especially when that singer seems to be actively promoting that
image. I don9t hold this against him. I can see how you could get
caught up in this, and then realize that this is not the direction you
wanted to go. I9ll give him credit for trying to bring the attention
back to just the music!

Subject: fobd single

I've now seen 2 copies of the FOBD single. One is in a digipack and has (I
think) 5 songs on it. The other is in a normal case and has 4 different
songs. Can anyone explain? Which one is better, etc.

I also heard that Chris wrote a bunch of songs for Alice Cooper's Last
Temptation. Any good ones on there? (I know he didn't sing any, but
still..)

Thanks.

oooohhh...good idea! i like it! i think the sg quotes on the main page
underneath the four band member pix looks really cool, and i know i
always check those out...

how about putting a SOMMS lister quote on the mailing list page
(either the digest compilation page or the "private" list page)?
SETH??? WHADDAYA THINK??? the people have spoken... (well, just me and
caryn, i guess, but every revolution's gotta start somewhere)

speaking of the "private" list page, i finally got off my butt and
submitted a bio and picture for the SOMMS member listings, so check
that out for a good yawn (bio) or a hearty belly-laugh (picture)
if you get a chance, folks...

OWW!!! WHAT THE HELL? where did this big ol' Birkenstock come from? damn
near killed me, fallin' from the sky like that!!! :)

sorry caryn, but i'm afraid you were mistaken about my correspondence
with ben...

you see, ben isn't much for the technological revolution...he hates
e-mail. so, he just comes over to my house every tuesday for dr.
pepper and grits. he brings his bass and we play showtunes on the
front porch for unwary passers-by. if they try to walk by without
giving us some change, ben spits at them and kicks them with his
big boots. then he screams "I'M GONNA BEAT MY RHYTHM INTO YOUR BONES,
SUCKA!!!" and pummels them with his four-string. i watch and laugh.
life is good on tuesdays...

sometimes he brings kim along, but after he throws down a few
mooseheads he starts gettin' all philosphical and stuff, so ben and i
leave him in the living room so he can explain the meaning of life to
my fish, Egan. then ben and i retreat to the basement so he can teach
me how to play "ty cobb" on my roomate's new mandolin.

chris and matt came over once, too, but they ran away when they heard
my girlfriend playing her "Abba's Greatest Hits" cd in my room
upstairs. dammit...so close, and yet so far...

this tuesday, ben's supposed to bring over a tuna casserole and a
copy of "Father of the Bride, II", but he's pretty forgetful so i won't
get my hopes up. oh, and he's kind of a lousy cook...(if you're
reading this, matt...don't tell ben i said that. the last time i did
he locked himself in our bathroom and cried "WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO
MAKE YOU APPRECIATE ME!?!?!" for three hours...not a pretty sight.)

(ouch...i hate it when my tongue gets stuck in my cheek like
 that... :) )

later...

I hope everyone had a cool 4th. Did anyone go out and play the song
4th of july? Me and some friends went to the beach and we tailgated
and watched fireworks and while we were I just cranked that song as
loud as it could go. It was pretty spiffy...anyways..to my point...

I was looking thru this video catalogue and found that they had a
copy of" Soundgarden - At the Whiskey". The catalogue didn't give a
very detailed description of it. Does anyone have this tape? When was
it done? How long is it? What song's are on it? Is it worth buying?
It was pretty cheap and so were the other 2 videos. I should just
buy all 3. But if anyone's seen SG at the Whiskey tell me all about
it...Thanks..

I am gonna have to back shroomy up on this... I too think that Chris is being
a bit hypocritical about his actions. with his " dont look at me like a sex

yet he does not want to be tagged " sex symbol"... ok well fine... but if you
dont want to considered a " sex symbol" do us a favor and take off your shirt

     Snakes

     Dogs

Also, I knew a guy in college who swore that Soundgarden knew

characteristics to innovative bands/people. I would tell him, 'Man,
they are just a bunch of guys who drink beer, clown around, and make
great music... In general, not unlike most of us.'

By the way, I'm relatively new 2 the list, so greetings. Anyone else
going to the Atlanta show? The Underground is a great venue to see a

From: Sherry Jennings <sherryj@maxey.dri.edu>
Subject: My ideas!

Lately I have been a little surprised by the rudeness of some of the list
members. I usually stay quiet and react to the mail in private, but I
feel like expressing my opinions now -- especially being as hung as I am
after the 4th's festivities.

About moshing...it sucks...and hurts. I am probably a little older than
most list members - not that that is pertinent - but I do enjoy to pay
more for tickets to see a band up front. Recently I have had my jaw
dislocated and was once completely suffocated by a 350 lb. Samoan that
thought it was fun to slam me up against a beam in a minute club in Reno
during a Type O Negative show. I don't mind getting physical and I can
definitely mosh with the best of them, but please the extremely physical
injuries have to stop. I especially love the comraderie after one idiot
mows someone over, blatantly causing pain, then stops to pick him/her up
saying "Ah..Ah...Ooh, like sorry man/sister." The love is
overwhelming.

Anyway, I am bummed that SG is doing more lollapaloooser stuff than small
venues. I used to be into multi-day, outdoor events, but with the influx
of the amateur hour, day-care atmosphere, I really don't like people
running naked over my food and drink. (Where's the parental supervision
when you need it.) Do people go to these events to listen to great music
or just to make public spectacles of themselves while they are out of the
reach of their parents? Sorry, I'm slightly frustrated because I am
missing the opportunity to see SG this summer because of my wedding.
(No, I'm not alone--my fiance and associated friends are also bummed.)

We were totally planning to see SG at the Gorge during our kayak trip up
the west coast, because we had seen the date on the website. Now the
Gorge show has been changed to the end of July--what's with that? Thanks
again Caryn for your help in setting me straight on dates. (After being
completely scolded for not checking my mail daily, I will never ask for
show dates again.) Just kidding.

Anyhow, I hope that I don't sound like a bitch...I just wanted to see SG
with a bunch of good friends and some great halucinagenics, but it looks
like it will be totally out of the question. If anyone has an
alternative for me--out here in the Tahoe area, let me know. I might
just have to settle for Shroom's pics of Chris in his underwear.

and I hate the place!!) in San Diego.
As you all know you am I played along with the Reverend...that show was one
of the most brutal I have been to in a long time... more people went there to
MOSH than to enjoy SG.Which really dissapointed me.. since this was the first
time that I had ever had the chance to see them live ( everytime they played
one thing or another happened to prevent me to go) I had managed to get
myself up to 3rd row by the time SG came on.. and it was a fight to keep the
postion.. with all the jock types there from SDSU..I had to finally give my
place up when 3 jocko's pushed there way up in front of me and decided to
stay... ( I'm 5'6 the guys had to be like 6'3) so needless to say I couldnt
see anything... so I had to FIGHT my way out and go twords the back....I
spent the rest of the show in the back and all wet ( Christy knows exactly
what I mean!! )

People used to be cool... if you fell, they helped you... you watched out for
others....it was a family type thing... I wish people would be more
considerate of others!!! I hope this year is diffrent but I doubt it....

thanks for listening!!

Dena :)~

i was talking to my friend lee the other day when he said he saw a
soundgarden single in albany. i said "cool," i would have driven up to
see which one it was but i didn't have a car. btw it didnt seem that
important to me anyway, i figured it was probly pretty noose or black
hole sun or something. today i went to his house to pick up a monty
python tape and he reminded me about the single and i said "let's go
check it out then", cause i had my car. so we drove to albany and got
there and he's riffling through the records and he finds it and hands it
to me. i said "NO!" pretty loud. i recognized the cover from the
pictures on seth's site. i held one of 5,000 copies of "room a thousand
years wide/hiv baby" in my hand. and it was only twelve dollars :) and
i had no money with me so i had to drive all the way home to get money
and then go back to buy it :) But i got it :) it's most sincerely
awesome :) it's on black vinyl, and it's not mint, but it's still The
"room a thousand years wide" single. i'm still amazed that i found it
=) how much does it sell for? given its condition and the black
vinylness of it, is it worth twelve dollars, or was the store that sold
it to me stupid? :) (steve, you know a lot about this stuff)

btw.. what kinda soundgarden/lolla shirts are there at lolla? do they
have sg tour shirts, or the same shirts that caryn told me they had at
the showbox show? (thanks caryn) and do the lollapalooza shirts have
the band names on em? Just checking =)

well... <insert disclaimer here> if you use any of these and get busted, if
you try to blame me or the net i will deny all complicity ;-)

1) "um, mom, dad, my favorite band in the whole world is playing at
lollapalooza in vt, i have a chance to go, they will probably never come to
maine so this is probably my only chance to see them, i'm going with [insert
name of friends here], [insert name of driving friend] is driving, i promise
to be responsible and be back by x time, can i please go? if you let me go,
i agree to babysit younger siblings free of charge/clean my room without
being asked/do all my homework forever "
2) "i'm staying the night at [insert name of favorite girlfriend who will
cover for you here]'s house and then we're going shopping the next day...
3) "i'm babysitting the [insert name of family] kids for these two days, see
ya" [and then give wrong phone number]

(#2 always worked for me...)

Subject: Superunknown Tour Video?

Hi I just signed into this mailing list so this is my first post.

I was talking to a fellow baker down at the bagel bakery I work and he told
me about this SG video that was from a tour (presumably SuperUnk) and it
featured live performances and other cool stuff with the band. What is this
video? I know it's not a bootleg but when was it released, and how the hell
was I the last to hear about it? Where is it available and how much is it?

BTW, who else thinks Eddie Vedder did backup vox on Burden in my Hand? Just
listen closely at the beginning: (Oh no/There she goes, Out in the
sunshine/The sun is mine. Has the band mentioned anything about this? I
still haven't heard the Pretty Noose interview disc, so i don't know.

Counting down the days until I see Soundgarden at Lollapalooza on July 30th at
the Gorge,

                        Sean

I was supposed to go but I can't afford to miss classes nor can I afford it
monetarily. I'm trying to get rid of my tickets now (face value of course).
Depressing, but then again life is good for giving us reality checks. /c:

Thanks for the extra info on other Lolla bands, Grote. I was surprised =
that so few bands play though (about 16 I think you said) - at =
Australia's Big Days Out there are over 30 bands playing.............and =
next time around it might include Soundgarden! Yippee............

Grote, just for saying that I'll definitely have to second Caryn's =
motion that you win another quote of the week..............and I tell =
you I'm even MORE jealous of the Americans on this list who can get to =
Lolla concerts, to have the chance to see the Violent Femmes in action. =
I've seen the Femmes twice now and I agree with Grote on them being =
absolutely fantastic and great to boogie to. Go and see them if you =
have the chance!!
