Shroom, there's this movie that you probably ought to see. I've seen
previews for it coming out later this summer and have heard a little
about it. It stars robert de niro as a crazed fan after superstar wesley
snipes.
I'm not sure if it would be more of an educational or inspirational film
for you ;)
p.s. I'm pretty sure the actual infatuation in the movie has little to do
with wesley's "sexy body."

he appeared to be having a good time until the end of the show when
those stoopid pizza plates started flying...then ben resorted to
spitting at the plates and the crowd, scowling and finally flipping

sorry for being so unclear, carolyn, but if you look back in my

stab each other with umbrellas, sell food at a significant

Seven on main stage, five on second stage and four on third stage (i
think, but i'm pretty sure it varies). All three stages are going at
once near the beginning/middle of the festival, then main stage is given
the limelight during the end. on the main stage, each set got
progressively longer as you moved up the bill...psychotica and
screaming trees played at the beginning and they got 35-50 minutes,
and by the time you got to the top two, sg was alloted just over an hour
and metallica's set was about an hour and a half. the other stages
had 45-minute sets, if i'm not mistaken. (oh yes...the ramones didn't
use all of their time---no surprise to ramones fans who've grown to
love their two-minute songs...they blitzed through 20 songs in just
under 40 minutes!!!)

> And has anyone managed to see Australian band You Am I yet? If so, give =

like i said above...good band. very tight, mature, fun to listen to.

> What about Metallica? Sorry I know a lot of =
> you don't like them, but a lot of us do - and other than hearing about =
> the poor behaviour of their fans I've not heard anything about how the =

metallica is an extraordinarily talented band...i'm not a huge fan of
their music, but as a musician and tune junkie i have to admit that
they are extremely tight, powerful, and nobody does that kind of music
better. they played a good set...LOUD! i've seen them in concert
before, and they never fail to impress...

> And Rancid - any good? (Ben mentioned he liked =
> them). I've seen them before and was very impressed with their energy - =
> go see them if you can.

sorry, carolyn, but i absolutely despise rancid. they sounded terrible
at lolla...tinny, unorchestrated noise and grunting. this is the
second time i've seen them and they were even worse this time. eeech.

> Carolyn the Mysterious & Foxy
> I used to be happy, I used to be.....Violent Femmes

that reminds me...the femmes are scheduled to be the special lolla
guest at some of the shows this year...WAYLON JENNINGS was the guest
at des moines, and while he played a respectable set, it was hardly
fantastic stuff. i've seen the femmes before and there really is no
describing or pigeonholing this band...they are absolutely fantastic
and i love 'em. made me boogie 'til i fell over... :)

good points, caryn...

the best example i can think of all this is a fugazi show i attended a
couple of years ago...

(background: fugazi is one of my favorite bands in the
universe--punk/hardcore at it's finest, and more musical integrity
than you will find anywhere in the music industry today. they have a
gigantic cult following, yet remain on their frontman's "dischord"
record label and only play shows in low-overhead venues like rollerrinks
and dancehalls [in lincoln they played in a horse show arena with a $5
cover]...fugazi has been at it for several years, and before that, a
few of the members were involved in other legendary hardcore outfits
[minor threat, anyone???] bottom line...these people are indie
legends, and are good at what they do.)

ANYWAY...at the fugazi show i attended, the first thing their frontman
(IAN!!!!) said was that the band was "very pleased to be with you
tonight," and that everyone was to "be careful and have a good time."
now there was an extremely mixed crowd...from 10 yrs old to 40+, and
everyone was pretty well spread out because it was a big arena. during
the first song, a pit breaks out towards the front and the inevitable
pushing to the front begins. after the first song, ian grabs the mic,
points to the pit-folks and says "did you people not listen to me? if
you're going to do that, go way in the back. i don't want to see any
pushing here, or someone is going to get chopped in half against this
cheap stage. oh, and please don't ride on top of the crowd with your
big boots. please don't bump people and kick people in the face. thank
you." needless to say, that left a considerable impact. here's this
guy who is considered superman in the hardcore/indie scene, telling
people NOT to mosh!!! i heard kids grumbling that it was lame, but
CARYN...you're absolutely right. that's the way it used to be. true
"punk" shows were fun...there were always relatively small crowds and
you knew that everyone in attendance was there because they loved the
band...not because they were looking for a "mosh outlet."
like soundgarden, fugazi is one of the most aggressive, in-your-face
bands on the face of the planet; but they also happen to have incredible
musical talents, and they want people to appreciate the music first
and foremost.
for what it's worth, fugazi played a fantastic set to a
considerably tamed crowd...they only had to make one other reminder of
"please, stop pushing" during the rest of the evening...i can't help
but wonder what would happen if more bands today would take this
attitude at their live shows...could the mtv myth of "mosh 4-ever!!!"
be dispelled eventually? who knows...but i think it could be worth a
try...

matt? are you listening? :)

later...

1) this list has NOTHING to do with America Online. therefore, the AOL
"police" can't do a fucking thing about it.

2) yes, chris writes back at the end of shroom's messages all the time. he
also writes back on the ends of carolyn's, ben timberlake's, seth's (when he

Subject: moshing...then and now..

Hey All-
Sorry I haven't posted for a while...its just that except for
general ravings about the new album, I haven't had a thing
to say.

I'm listening to the MINUTEMEN right now, "Double Nickels on
the Dime", some of the best lyrics ever put onto disc. A couple
songs got me thinking about how cool it would have been to see
these guys live. Which takes us back to 1985-1990 period of music.
Underground groups and fans were lauging at chirpies like myself
who purchased the "Top Gun" soundtrack and were anxiously awaiting
Bon Jovi's new album.

Crowd sufing was crowd surfing. It was a collective effort to keep
the person afloat. Kurt Cobain was a religious participator, and
unfortunately had to quit when the underground became not so
underground anymore. Unfortanately anymore, I don't see how moshing
can be put into concerts. There's always going to be punk ass frat
boys who go there just to kick the shit out of others. A good part
may come when the 'others' gang up on frat punks and other drunk
assholes and retaliate and kick the shit out of them :)

Times change, and bands like Soundgarden/Pearl Jam even the
Butthole Surfers must adapt to some extent. No longer can
great groups like these assume that whomever is at their
concerts are there to see a great band play.

The only way this can change is with time. Someday, another
form of music that will hopefully move college music back into
the college circuit. I'm just hoping its a form of music that I totally
hate :) God, it must have been a great time in 87-88, seeing Husker
Du or the Replacements play at a club while the uninformed masses
were waiting like lemmings for the next set of tickets to be
given out for the Motley Crue concert :)

Laters

Alright my turn to bitch. I want to go to lolla but in order for

Why doesn't anyone come to Maine? We get horde and a Love and

Subject: Re: When Is SG gonna go on tour?

I think that Eli\Avi Sharon or The 'A' Man, was well entitled to pose
his question on a Down On The Upside tour. Sure, they are playing at
lollapalooza (or whatever), but Chris admitted that they wouldn't
play at a lolla, and they were basically playing at a Metallica gig.
From the sounds of it, the concerts where Soundgarden are playing
independantly, the crowds are way better and everyone has a better
time; so I think that a Soundgarden tour is different to them playing
at Lollapalooza. Anyway, I'm just shitty that I'm in Australia and
can't see Soundgarden yet. And to see them & Metallica playing at the same venue
on the same day (you US people are sooo lucky.) BTW how the hell could you
leave the place when Metallica hit the stage? You could at least
watch from the back and not have to get creamed by some mad freak.
I'm sorry that Metallica fans have got themselves such a bad name.
Metallica themselves are cool guys and there's no way that they would
be proud of the behaviour of some of their fans.

Subject: ohio lolla report..FLOWER!!

i just got back for my trip to Columbus to see Soundgarden for the
first time at Buckeye lake in Ohio. I live near Dc in Virginia and i
drove 8 hours yesterday to get there on 6 hours sleep running on
caffine and ginsing. anyway to make a long story short i wernt alone
but had a great time. I danced around during most of the Ramones set,
they were suprisingly awesome, i heard they werent but i had a vball,
chriss and ben were watching from the left side of the stage during
their set and i was on the right and when i saw them i was jumping up
and down yelling their names.
so i got towards the calm section of ther pit after the ramnes were
over( like someon on the list recomended) and it took awhile for sg
to get on stage but when they did i and the entire crowd went crazy.
the crowd grew fronm the size of it during the ramones and Chris
waved and they went right into Spoonman. i was fairly close and this
was such a rush , ive heard spoonman on bootlegs but it didnt sound
half as good as in person. THen it was right into Searching with my
good eye closed , towards the end chris said something alik"bore, bore
as in pig , you guys are bore" i thought he was saying whore".they
played Let Me Drown next and the crowd was still into it i was
jumping up and down screaming the lyrics, it was so great. then
chrios took off his guitar and i heard the opening notes of flower!
they paused for a second but went right back into it and i was so
fucking happy!total fucking godhead!, it was good version too and
only me and maybe 10 other people who were jumping up and down knew
it.

then pretty noose and burden in my hand were met with applause and
moshing and people singing the words, ty coob was the big drunk mosh
fest in the pit but it was a good version. the crowd really cheered
during fell on Black Days next , the crowd was good and it looked
like Chris enjoyed it , Ben was being Ben at some parts yet pissed
and annoyed at other , Kim looked annoyed and sarcastic during the
entire set. then rusty cage and waiting for the sun. Chris played
Black hole sun solo and people were crowd surfing, i didnt understand
it. then outshined was really good and rhinosaur was okay , it wasnt
as good as on the album but the solo was good. Drawing flies was cool
and the played one of my favorite songs, No Attention , last , i told
someone that i was going to go crazy if the played it and i did. i
crowd surf for a half minute before i was dropped but i got right
back up and danced some more.at the end kim walked acrossed the stage
with his head back and a beer bottle in his mouth and of course the
crowd cheered.

the ramones rule and the screeaming trees st improved as it went on ,
the lead guitarist is so damn cool( is it GAry o connor?) . I'll try
not to write so much for the next 2 lolla i attend this summer.
