Hello...

Damn, I hope this works, 'cuz I'm new to this AOL thing...

I'd like to reply to 'Shroom (if that is your real name) -- I agree
that Chris is being a bit hypocritical with the shirt off thing,
etc. If you're a rock 'n' roller, people of the opposite (and sometime
same) sex will love you no matter what because it's partially hero
worship and admiration and emotion and all those things...so no matter
what he does it won't matter because he's evoking emotion and passion
in us all through the music. So there's nothing he can do to stop us
from being obsessed. Putting his shirt on will not make a bit o'
difference.

BTW, did you catch the part in the "Louder Than Live" video where CC
is practically DOING the bass player?!!! Please check it out for your
own good. (I hope this doesn't get censored by the AOL police.)

Bye bye now.

It seems to me that this may just be a matter of getting a little older
and a little more mature. I'm sure that most people (especially those in
the 20-30 year old range) can think of a few things they did five years
ago that they would never do now, for whatever reason. Why should Chris
be any different? I don't think it's necessarily about hypocracy or
what's not real. I think it more likely that he's always "been true" to
himself. It's just his outlook that's changed.

YES, YES, YES!! $30 is a bit more expensive than what I paid for it,
but the covers and b-sides are priceless. It's a worthwhile addition
to any collection. The recordings are direct studio recordings, so
the sound quality is excellent.

Run to the store RIGHT NOW and BUY IT!!

Subject: Commercialism in the Garden

I know that this issue has been beaten into the ground already but I
want to say a few things about it myself. If playing in a small venue
for a small crowd (despite the Molson endorsement) equates to going
commercial, then maybe Chris and the guys have sold out. Speaking as a
musician myself, I can tell you that there is something about playing
in small clubs and such to a small crowd that makes playing more
exciting and more of a challenge. But then again, when starting out
small places are pretty much all that you get to play in. Getting the
chance to play in larger venues where you have room to run around
without worrying about knocking the guitar player in the crowd or
backpeddling into the drummer and his set is pretty cool. The minute I
get the chance to play a venue like that I will jump on it. It isn't a
thirst for commercial success. It is simply a want for variety. Some
bands start off playing arenas and stadiums w/o having to go through
that small club stage. And some are destined to play small clubs for
their whole career. SG has the talent and power to say "You know, we
haven't played in a small clubin a while. You want to try it for the
next show?" and actually be able to do it.
While I am at it, I want to comment quickly on the issue about
Chris' shirtless thing. I don't think that he was necessarily up on
stage running around shirtless for the attention of the female
fans. Shit, everyone who walks around half-naked in public hopes that
they attract some sort of attention, right? If turning chicks on left
and right was his business, he could have been elsewhere collecting
money while on stage, right? The fact of the matter is that sometimes
when you are screaming your head off and putting everything that you
have into your performance you tend to sweat immensely. The natural
thing to do is discard clothing that you don't necessarily need. So
what's wrong with that? Just because Chris undresses on stage one
minute (uh, because he is hot maybe?) and says that he doesn't like
being made into a sex symbol the next doesn't make him, as Shroom
said, full of shit.

One should not go into a war zone if one is not prepared to be
injured. Step to the side, it is that simple! Everyone knows that
there will be moshing so it is not an unexpected thing.

It's not that I have a problem with Chris wanting to change his look
(<sigh>), it's the fact that he's trying to blame his past shirtlessness (is
that a word?) on photographers and directors. It's like he wants people to
believe that he was MADE to go around shirtless constantly, and we all know
that's not true. He showed off his sexy body, got many of us females all hot
for him... and now he's trying to play the "sex god martyr" role. I'm just
saying that the least he could do is be truthful, and admit that he wasn't
forced to go around half-naked all the time. He did it with a free will, and
he shouldn't be blaming it on other people. In my book, that makes him a
hypocrite. A very talented and yummy hypocrite.

Well,I did some nosing around, and the deal with the new video is that A&M
and MTV assume the audience to be dullards, hence they only really want to
play performance videos. The band itself requested a non-performance

satisfied with the one I did,and that's what really counts.

that's true. i was at a show once with a fairly sized pit and me and my
friends were right at the front/center [wow!] and i was happily dancin away
when i hear this nasty kinda groan from beside me and see my friend [who is
not very big] crumpled on the ground with four people like standing on
him.[where they had been for like 10 minutes] i did my best to get over
there as fast as possible but it was reall packed and i couldn't move. he
was ok tho coz some big guy helped him up and kinda looked out for him for
the rest of the show. he was bruised but ok. we went up to guy and thanked
him afterwards but it's really scary to see people just more concerned with
hearing the music than helping people have a good time. i think what Mark
was tryin to say was that he wished it could be like it was a few years ago
when people DID care. anyway, i have no idea if this post made any sense and
i'm too lazy to go back and read it.

Hi guys.

I've been reading all this messages about moshing at lolla, and I'm
kind of scared now. If I go, I'll be very worried, specially because I
wear glasses.

At all the concerts I've gone, I've been right in the front at least for one
song, and I like to "mosh"(?) a lot, here it's called slam, and everybody
jumps, hit each other, crowdsurf, etc. But we're still very nice
(guessing for your mails) and when somebody fells someone pick him out.
I've lost my glasses several times (and they're made of glass, not
plastic) and people has helped me out always. Several times some boys
have "protected" me by making a "circle" around me. Well I hope you
understood my point.
And if you want to come to Mexico to a concert you can be sure that your
life won't be in danger =).

i dunno about all this moshing stuff.. i mean, when i go to a show,
(course i haven't seen a band live in over a year) i like to get into
the pit, but not for the purpose of beating the shit out of people - i
like to mosh cause say soundgarden for example, the music drives me
crazy and sometimes i like to freak out and i can't do it in my living
room for the sake of the downstairs neighbors, so i try to do it at a
show - don't get me wrong, i mean, i'm against this beating the shit out
of people at shows - but that's ALL it should be is dancing to the music
cause you like the band, not because you have to be macho and beat the
shit out of people or you're a horny bastard that wants to grab some
girl's boobs in the pit. in short, i agree with all of you. and the
shoving and whatnot that goes around during concerts - regardless of the
pit - annoys the hell out of me. the shoving match that ensued during
jesus christ pose when i saw soundgarden in rochester had me on the
floor - i didn't expect it and i got knocked down. but some guy was
really, really nice to help me get up and to help stop all the shoving
so i could get up in the first place :) if that guys on the mailing
list, thanks a lot, i won't forget it :) but in december of that same
year i was at a nine inch nails show and i got knocked down again, only
this time i got literally stepped on when i was on the floor, no one
helped me up here. at some shows, people look out for one another, and
at others, it's a free for all. i dunno if this display of assholery
just happens at certain shows (and there's gonna be a lot of that macho
display at any given lollapalooza, unfortunately), or if it's this new
craze, to beat the shit out of people at concerts.. hopefully the crowds
at sg shows when they do their own tour won't be made up of assholes.
lolla 93 was the first concert i ever went to, and from that, i expect
to get bruised, etc. at shows.. sigh.. i just hope i don't get hurt on
tuesday :(
..overfloater

btw: did i tell you that at that sg show i saw, i was hyperventilating
and i went to get a drink out of the water fountain cause i absolutely
thought i was gonna die, and it was packed, and i stumbled on my way out
of there and i bumped into some lady on accident and the bitch punched
me? real nice. REAL nice. one hell of a community.

moshing was the response of people who were immensely moved by the
music. it was an intense physical response. but like mark talked about
in his first post (and i'm sorry mark, like vikki, i also didn't
understand you were being sarcastic). i used to go in mosh pits for
bands like black flag and the dead kennedys and the ramones, and i never
saw anyone get hurt.

a mosh pit used to be right about where they tend to form now: a few rows
back from the front. however, you NEVER fucked with the people who were
in the front rows. they earned that space and were entitled to it, and
shouldn't have to suffer because you like to bounce around. [not the case
now]

there were very serious 'rules' then... (and still are at real punk shows
today).... if someone fell down you picked them up, if someone hit you
too hard you told them, you didn't just punch their lights out, and if it
was clear that someone was there to cause trouble, you didn't respond,
you stopped the pit and got security to get the guy out.

you were aware of your neighbors at all times and tried to be considerate
of their right to enjoy the music in their own personal way. and i know
that sounds deadhead-like, which is contrary to punk in a way, it was
really like that.

i think vikki and mark and others have talked about this better than i
have... and i'm at work and in pain so i'll stop typing now...

I think any one of us has something we did in our past that in a year
or two down the line we were embrassed by or unhappy with. Just
imagine that goofy hairstyle you thought looked great or life choice
you made being out there publicly documented for everyone to see. I
think initially Chris being shirtless was a necessity on stage due to
the heat! And than the buzz started a little at a time about him
being *hot* and than it became a lead singer kind of thing.
Photographers ask him to take off is shirt and he obliged. Maybe he
was never comfortable with it but it seemed like a good thing to do in
order to help his band. No it didn't improve their musicianship but it
sold magazines and videos! So now he doesn't have to take his shirt
off to *sell* his band. and he is more comfortable not doing it
unless it's on stage and it's hot!!

Maybe Chris is slightly embrassed by doing it when he was younger. I
think calling him a hypocrite is a bit much. If he bashed some other
up and coming band for flaunting a lead singer sexy body or something
like that I think the word would be more appropriate. I think being
human is more like it. A human being who prehaps did something he is
not all that proud of! Shroom, I want to know what Mr. Cornell did to
get you so PO'd??? Did the Police come to your door last week??? Did
he turn down your invitation to a birthday slumber party at your
house?? toni BTW: to all my fellow Americans: Happy 4th of

I'm still calling Chris a hypocrite because he does NOT want to be
considered a sex symbol (or so he says)... but yet he encouraged it by
complying with the requests for pictures and video of his sexy body. I'm
sure he was FULLY aware of what was going to happen when he flaunted his
body... but he looks down on the women he was trying to impress in the first
place. I'm not pissed off at Chris... I'm just tired of hearing the "Chris
doesn't want you women lusting after him" spiel. Ok, maybe he doesn't... but
dammit, did he have to get us all worked up like that... and then denounce
us? ;) Heheheh... actually, I wish he'd keep going around half-naked... and
he could look down on us all he wants!! <sigh> Can NO ONE see what I'm
trying to say here? I'm trying to justify my lust... and blame it on Chris!!
That way, ten years from now when I'm Chris' age, and seeing a therapist...
I can avoid the "it's my parents fault!!" whine. I'm SO understood. ;)

Subject: M.O.M. compilation

Okay peoples, I guess I was the Only one who bought the "Music for Our
Mother Ocean" CD, so here's the breakdown:

Contrary to what SURFER mag wrote, and what I reported to all of you, the
version of "My Wave" on the album is NOT a previously unreleased live
version, but just the studio cut. How sucky.

Anyway, the rest of the album does have it's ups and downs. There are some
good covers ("California Sun" by the Ramones), and then there are BAD covers
(PJ's "Gremmie Out of Control"). One excellent cover is Pennywise's
rendition of "Surfing USA". I have to admit I groaned when I first heard of
it, but when I got a listen it turned out to be great. However, an
absolutely HORRIBLE rendition of "Surfing Bird" by silverchair follows,
which made me fumble for my CD remote to skip it.

The real Gems of the album: Helmet's rendition of the Bjork song "Army of
Me", "My Wave" (for those 2 people who don't have superunknown), and
Sublime's "Bad Fish".
The Reverend Horton Heat's song "I can't Surf" didn't exactly accomodate my
taste when I first heard it, but kept listening only because they toured
w/SG (ok, call me biased). It's really cool, tho. I say if you can afford
the $12, buy the album. It's for a good cause. but if you have better
things in mind, save it.
Gregg
