Well, I'd thought I'd throw in some extra bits about the Des Moines
Lollapalooza that the others missed. The main stage stuff was posted
competently already so I'll skip it. First of all, be sure to check
out the tent where some CD's are for sale. The had virtually EVERY cd
Soundgarden has ever put out (including singles). Also, they had the
limited edition BMF in the wood box. It was numbered 94 out of 200 or
something like that. I don't remember the price. This booth is also
where some of the bands are signing autographs. I got autographs from
Psychotica and Ruby.

If you aren't into Rancid, be sure to check out Ruby on the second stage.
They put on a great show, and to see Lesley Rankine ragging on all the
"Metal Boys" is hillarious.

When you ge there, be sure to pick up a copy of the Lollapalooza magazine.
It lists all the bands and the times that they start.

Eat before you get there if possible. I had to pay $6.00 for a
fucking taco. Even though it was big, the price was outragous.
$2.00 to $3.00 for a 12 ounce bottle of water!

In all, I must say that the vibe this year is considerably different.
The presence of Metallica/Rancid/Ramones has changed the audience
demographic into a more aggressive crowd. I frequently heard things like
"I can't wait to get to the pit to kick some peoples asses."
Oh well, I'll see Soundgarden when ever I can and I'll kep looking
forward to a headlining tour in the fall/winter!

I've really been doing alot of thinking about this kind of stuff, the
changes between early SG behavior and current SG behavior and I've
developed a theory. In earlier posts I've talked about how maybe now
that they can afford it the things they are doing are the REAL
Soundgarden. It follows, unfortunately, that if that is true then some
of the earlier stuff must have been an act to some extent. Not that I
hold that against them. Everyone in the business has to make SOME
concessions in order to get their foot in the door. So maybe the
shirtlessness WAS a deliberate marketing tool, whether Chris wants to
admit it or not. My theory is that Soundgarden, not wanting to be
taken advantage of by "the Business" decided to take advantage of IT.
In reading old articles I discovered that while they were signed to
SST A&M had fronted them money for demos. The demos A&M paid for ended
up as Ultramega OK, and A&M was pretty pissed. Sounds like playing
both ends against the middle to me.

I also think that as much as they talk about being their own people
that they have had to bend to other pressures, whether it be record
companies or whatever. Just look at some of the frustrated lyrics
Chris writes. We've talked about Drawing Flies, and on DOTU Boot Camp,
and there are lots of other songs that seem to talk about being, or at
least feeling, restricted artistically. These guys are really smart
and I think they've done a great job getting where they are, but I
doubt that they've been completely honest about some of their reasons
for doing and/or saying some things. I don't know. Somehow it seems
like there are some inconsistencies.

Even Soundgarden isn't perfect and none of this makes me like them any
less of course. I just hope some GLARING inconsistency doesn't turn up
some time in the future. So far I still find them to be the most
refreshing group of musicians in a pretty bogus business.
Kathie

PS: I'd love to hear what other people think about this stuff.

Subject: Re: In Luv w/Chris

Hi there all ye fellow Sommsters...
Haven't posted in a while, just reading and taking it all in, ya know.
I stood in line this Saturday for Lolla tickets...was 5th person in
line at a particular Tower Records and I can't f*#!ing believe that I
got lawn seats! If you know that colonnade is noose bleed territory,
then you know I'm further back than that. I am so pissed that this
years Lolla is at "sucky" Irvine Meadows! But I don't know what I would
have liked better..Irvine or Bakersfield..Yikes..talk about heat
stroke!

Anyway....I said no way! Screw these lawn tickets! I'm going to see my
beloved Soundgarden up close!!!! So I picked up the phone and dialed a
few local ticket "brokers" (scalpers with fancy names) and I got my
husband and I, 6th row orchestra tickets smack dab in the center!!!
Hallelujah!!!! (Chris Cornell here's looking at ya! errr, or your
chest! LOL (forgive me, Caryn) I have my fingers crossed on that one
Shroom!) And..I'm a pro at climbing over seats too>>> So Chris..you
better call the police! Hehehehehe. Anyway, I paid up the butt severely
for the tickets, although I told myself that I deserved it, because I
was one of those many *unfortunate fans* that missed out on the Showbox
show :( I'm still recupeorating from my depression on that
one.....just ask my hubby.

Jessica...join the club of many Chris Cornell admirers..he is quite the
man..Oh sorry Dena.....Matts a doll too! But overall and most
important, with all kidding aside....(not speaking for Shroom tho) We
all enjoy and respect *ALL* the guys for all the great music they give
us, and have given us, over the years. They *ALL* are quite the group
of talented and hard working musicians...and the most crucial reason
that we all are here...is the love of Soundgarden's music. Chris
Cornell can't take all the credit just for being HOT
looking....although Shroom might argue with me on that one! Huh Shroom?
Oh..by the way Shroom, you still going to send me a copy of that
Rockline show????
Jessica...email me about what show your going to go to, at Irvine, and
maybe we can meet up!? (with no help from Nothingman...)
Well. ....Sorry for the ass long post guys, but I just had to get the
fingers back in shape! :) You never know who might need the skillfull
touch of quick theraputic fingers... eeah Shroom...????? :)

alternative was still alternative everyone knew each other and it was a
small fun crowd. When Jane's broke everything changed. People
listened to the music but missed the message. The same thing with SG and
all the bands today. It used to be fun and people would pick you up
when you fell, not trample you when you fell. Now people are slammin and
crowd riding when the band isnt even playing. I know I wouldnt have as
much fun at a concert if I didnt come home sore but you have to look out
for each other.. Maybe thigs are just too big now.

My dear shroom, I agree with you totally.

chris is always complaining on how all these girls focus on his body, and how
they are always falling head over heels for him, and he has the nerve to say
that he doesn't know why they just don't focus on the music, rather than just
how cute he is. Well, how do you expect anyone to stop if you keep doing
that. If he didn't want to he didn't have to take his shirt off, but that's
just what he wanted to do, just being a show-off. 'Course I wouldn't put my

attention over his body, boy, keep your shirt on!

Knowing the fact that the band doesn't like to perform in thier vids, how
many people think Chris fucked up the lyrics in the begining of it? I mean
just looking at them, you know they were faking it, but MTV plays that one
more because thata's the kind of stuff they like to play. they like when
bands lip-sync. It's just a plain music video, when I think the old one had
a lot more to do with the song, actually painting a picture for you. Well,
what do you expect from MTV. They any bands like SG, and they hate any thing
new, yet they take in bands like the Dave Mathews Band. It's just sickening!

you know, as much as i think chris is extremely hot, i would never,
never, ever do this...

if it was a guy doing it to a girl, we would (hopefully) all be disturbed

and unlike shroom's "what would you do if you found chris lying

From: "Joseph E \"Gene\" Candelaria" <susnishun@inland.net>
Subject: Chris' 2 cents on Metallica...

Howdy all,
I found the following in the LA Tmes Online Calendar Section for Tuesday July 2. It's an article which discusses Lollapalooza and the
"alternative" -vs- "mainstream" debate:

"To me, the idea of Metallica headlining makes perfect sense," said
Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden, and one of the most
respected figures in alternative rock. For one thing, they are a great
band, but they also bring in a lot of new people (to Lollapalooza) and
you can turn on that audience to interesting new things they might
otherwise never hear . . . like the Cocteau Twins."

Moments later on stage, Cornell had fun with the Metallica controversy.

At the end of his bands set, he stared out at the crowd and spoke
sarcastically about how bummed everyone must be, having to look
forward to Metallica closing the show.

The crowd, most of which had been standing in the scorching sun for
more than seven hours, let out a huge roar--both, it seemed, for
Soundgarden's radiant set and for the pending arrival of Metallica...

why would I need an alias to post about Chris' sexy body? It's not as though

 Right Seth? ;) Heheheh...

Congrats on getting such great Lolla tickets, Christy!! Hopefully all
those crazy Metallica fans (ummm... except for the wonderful Caryn, of
course... she's not crazy... I think? Heheheh... J/K Love ya, Caryn!!)
won't rip out chairs and start a mosh pit on top of you. "Call the police!!"
Heheheh... just wait until Lolla gets to TX, babe. Somehow, someway... I'm
going to make my presence known to them. I'm not sure just HOW yet... but
I'll figure SOMETHING out. But yah, I've got to agree with you... the music
comes first (try not to pass out, people). I loved the music before the man.
Actually, for a brief while (a couple weeks), I thought that Jason Everman
was just a little bit cuter than Chris. Then (for about a month) I thought
that they might be brothers with different last names. OkOkOk... so shoot
me. I was only 15 years old in '89. <sigh> A girl is entitled to a FEW
mistakes, right?

Oh yah... one more thing. I FINALLY got that Snappy that I've been
wanting for ages. A Snappy makes jpg files from video sources. So if
there's any REALLY good SG footage that you people want pictures of... write
me and let me know, and if I have the video/interview/concert on tape, I'll
try to get a picture made of the certain scene. I've already sent a few pix
to Seth, and I'll be doing that all summer... so keep checking out the page
for new shots (which will probably be predominantly of Chris and his sexy
body... what a shocker, huh?). I've also got a bunch of MLB stuff, so if
you're interested in that, too... let me know.

Hello all,
Anyone out there who is going to or has gone to Lolla
this year, are you interested in writing a review for my page?
I've added a link to the page with the set lists and comments
to my page, but some more information on the other bands besides
SG would be nice, if possible. Good, bad, or indifferent, I don't
care, if you feel like contributing it, I'll put it up. [Mental

Also, (and I know it's a bit late for this information,
as I'm going to Columbus tommorow to see SG, et al, but thought I'd
check) does anyone know who the "special guest" that plays between
the Ramones and SG is for the July 5, Barrie Ontario date? The
official page still remains mum on the subject. (The Lolla.
publicity system runs like a well oiled machine with no moving
parts.) I know that the Violent Femmes will be at the Columbus
one tommorow, and the Tea Party will be at the Quebec date on
the 7th, but the 5th is still TBA. (On a side tangent, has anyone
ever seen TBA? I keep wanting to, but they always replace them with
some other act. And I can never find a copy of their release,

there is a HUGE difference between moshing and what goes on now, which is
people beating the shit out of each other because they think it is cool.

  Besides I would

chris wouldn't dare do that today because [see above]. even eddie vedder,
who used to venture into the crowd at every show as a point of principle,
wouldn't dare do it again.

being down front is not the exclusive right of stupid angry white males.
what is going on now has NOTHING to do with the music...
