Hey there!

I'm glad to know I'm not the only person in this world to have these
experiences with the new Soundgarden album.

I just can't wait to get my DOTU copy ( you are all so lucky!) to put my
headphones on and travel into outer space with the music.

Guess that's it for now, bye!

From: BTimLake@aol.com
Subject: lollapalooza 6/27-report

I had a shitty time.
It was a beautiful day. My best friend, my brother, his friend and I set out
at 11:30 for Longview Lake after a stop at the grocery store for supplies.
We listened to Alice in Chains on the way (I firmly believe that you should
not listen to the music of the concert band directly before or after the
concert, but should listen to related music or side projects. I'm not quite
sure why)
Anyway we got there and the whole setup is pretty cool. I'd never been to
lolla before, so I can't really compare it. There's a little carnival set up
(you have to pay for the rides), an airwalk tent with a halfpipe, tons of
merchandise and food tents, eMpTyV's choose or lose (tm) trailer, and three
stages.
The main stage is a big thing. Biggest constructed stage I've seen since Pink
Floyd (then again, I don't get to too many concerts). The second stage is a
half-size version. The third stage is on the back of a flatbed trailer type
thing.
The order in the program for mainstage was: Psychotica, Shaolin Monks,
Rancid, Screaming Trees, Ramones, special guests (the Cocteau Twins),
SOUNDGARDEN, and Metallica. (I may have missed someone there, but for those
artists, it's definitely the right order)
The monks were moved to the second stage for some reason, though.
We hung around the main stage for almost all of the day with breaks to get
water and check out the airwalk demonstrations.
Psychotica=kinda weird, but not bad.
Rancid=lots of energy. during this, there was the expected amount of energy,
lots of moshing. I also experience one of those '90s rites of passage for
which I was long overdue: I got kicked in the head by the muddied boot of
some crowdsurfer. But, I thought, "Hey it's Rancid; you play with fire, you
might get burned."
The Screaming Trees were very cool. Probably the most enjoyable act of the
show for me.
The Ramones were also cool, lots of energy, but I didn't know a lot of their
stuff.
Before and during the Cocteau Twins, everyone who had come for Soundgarden
and Metallica started jockeying for position. My friend Ryan and I got spots
just right of center about three people back. Getting them wasn't too hard.
Maintaining them was.
The Cocteau Twins didn't belong on this show. I thought they sounded
interesting, but you spend an entire day building up a crowd's energy, then
just before the climaxes, you give 'em dreamy music. I'm sure Shroom wants
some of whatever the organizers are smoking.
Anyway, after someone hit the lead singer (female) in the face with a glop of
mud, the band left the stage.
My friend and I were ashamed to be associated in any way with that crowd.
So then, some pushing starts. Now, I'm something of a pit rookie. I've been
in a few, but I was not expecting anything like this. In addition to the fact
that the ground was slippery mud, everyone was pushing.
Did I mention I had my little automatic camera? I was planning on taking
pictures.
Anyway Soundgarden comes on and My friend and I get squished. His sunglasses
break. I nearly lose my glasses and don't even realize the band is on stage
until about 10 seconds later.
I nearly punctured the guy in front of me with my fork. He was cool, though.
He asked if I could see okay.
Since I couldn't get my arms down due to the lack of space, I held my fork up
which the security guy eyed skeptically.
Okay, this is the part where I'm gonna bitch.
Little motherfuckers crowdsurfing pushing Metallica ass fans kicking just get
the fuck out. Why do people always have to mosh and crowdsurf at the fucking
concerts? Why can't they just move and enjoy the music. You would think they
were there for the music, but apparantly not.
I'm just so angry. I've been anticipating this concert for months. It's one
of the few things that's kept me going and it was ruined by fucks who just
don't care.
We moved out of the front and towards the back after three songs.
I hope I don't sound like I'm whining. Maybe I just wasn't prepared for it.
But it still makes me angry as hell.
I used to be all for a band having tons of fans and y'know the more the
merrier. But I can't help thinking, "What if DOTU had been a commercial flop?
What if all those bandwagoners hadn't been there? Wouldn't my concert have
been more enjoyable?
Anyway, I snapped a couple distant shots that probably won't come out and I
got a pretty accurate setlist from one of the guys out in the control tower
thing. I had to help him with some of the song titles, but here it is:
Waiting for The Sun
SWMGEC
Let Me Drown
Pretty Noose
BIMH
NTMF
Ty Cobb
FOBD
Rusty Cage
Spoonman
Black Hole Sun (huge cheer from crowd: "Hey, we recognize this!")
Outshined
Rhinosaur
BUTOW
No encore, though I also know they played Never Named, but I'm not sure
where.
Okay, I'm sorry this was a really long post. I hope it's somewhat useful to
people who are going to other lolla dates.
I'm still glad I went. I mean, I was 10 feet away from Chris Cornell at one
point.
If anyone wants more details (I didn't really talk about the band. maybe
tomorrow) just email me.
- - Ben
P.S. I never got a chance to yell for them to play Mind Riot.

I found something interesting in an old magazine article that really
illuminated the "haircut" situation for me:

Rolling Stone July 9, 1992
"When I met Chris", says Thayil, "my first impression was that he
was some guy who just got out of the navy or something. He had real
short hair and was dressed real slick..."

This kind of goes along with what I said in an earlier post. Maybe
Chris felt comfortable enough with their success to go back to a hair
cut he felt more comfortable with. Maybe, just maybe, the long hair
was not "the real Chris". Oh my God!

Unless you stake out the front row against the barrier 8 hrs
before SG take the stage, do not, I repeat, do not go down
front. If you plan on seeing bands on the 2nd stage or go
to the bathroom sometime that day, your going to have to
strong-arm your way back to no farther than the 2nd row, no
later than a band before SG come out. The reason I say 2nd
row and not 3rd or 4th is that you'll need to use the person
in the 1st row as an anchor or can stick your hands under
their arms and hold on to the barrier yourself. If you are
3 or more rows back you have NO leverage. You go where the
crowd shifts you. Do not resist the motion trying to hold
your position - you will snap your bones. Don't fall when
the wave hits, nobody will help you up. Now that you think
your almost grounded way up front, here's a caveat. Do not
duck when surfers come over your head. I once bent to let a
surfer pass over the barrier into securities arms and got
kicked in the head. My nose slammed down on the barrier, my
collar bone was bruised and I drifted in-and-out of
consciousness for 10 minutes. I won't be down front at
Lollapalooza. I'll hang out with friends, check out all
three stages, sun myself... and bring my binoculars. -Vikki

Sorry you had such a bad time at Lolla, Ben. I totally agree with you
about the drunken Metallica fans. Have I ever mentioned that I don't like
Metallica? ;) Not only does the music not agree with me... too many guys
who spend most of their time wearing cowboy hats and wishing they were
sitting on horses listen to them. Yee-fucking-haw. And I swear... if I
witness even ONE person holding their hands up in devil horns and screaming
"MeTALLiCA!!!!!!!!" before they actually hit the stage, I'm going to kill. I
don't like the big outside shows, anyway. I think the only cool thing about
them is that at least thirty million people offer to get you stoned... and
that's before you even get out of the parking lot and into the place.
Ummmm... the crowd surfing is usually pretty good, too. My apologies to
anyone who's head I've kicked... that's why I wear my Chucks... softer than
the old Doc's. Means less a chance of concussion. I'm so nice... ;) Since
I'm on the topic... anyone else going to the July 25th show in Ferris, TX?
 E-mail me, kiddies..........

AAUUUGGGHHHH!!! Why is everyone trying to age Chris so much?? (Damn
you Dena, you started this.) He's going to be 32 on July 20th. Weird... I've
been a fan of his since he was 25. Ummm... great. I'm feeling old again.

I paid $45 dollars for mine last year. For some reason I've been
blessed with finding great SG stuff owned by really stupid people. I got
SOMMS for $4 at a garage sale. Garage sales are great things people!!! You
can get some groovy stuff at 'em.

It's true... "Unattractive" hints at SG. Especially when Todd starts
screaming. That whole soundtrack is great...

Hmmm... my friend Droop asked me an interesting question the other day.
"How many fucking times have you listened to the new album so far?" I tried
to estimate, but I'll be damned if I can come up with a good enough guess.
Almost non-stop since it was released? It's strange... so many events in my
life have been framed with SG music. Heheheh... I have tons of home videos
of my friends and I, and in every one of 'em, SG is playing in the
background. You know what? I think I've probably heard BMF more times than
any of the guys in the band have. Ok... I'm babbling now.... sorry 'bout

first of all, you need to separate a few things. you need to separate
metallica fans from sg fans (and i say this as a metallica fan), and
people who go to concerts to enjoy the music and assholes who go to a
show just to fuck things up and prove how big their dick is.

does that seem harsh? i don't think so. bonnie had some fucking ASSHOLE
who couldn't get through front and center, couldn't get through chris,
couldn't get through me, so instead, he goes for a tiny 5" petite girl
who has JUST AS MUCH RIGHT TO BE DOWN FRONT AS ANYONE ELSE. if she can
take the pushing and the heat she's entitled to be there. if that
asshole was such a huge sg fan and wanted to be down front why the fuck
didn't he get there at 3pm like i did????? anyway, the idiot went after
her because she was a woman and because she was tiny.

todd wrote me and told me about a friend of his who was down front and
got a set list, and that his friend is not a big guy who was getting
bullied and pushed around by some huge asshole who wanted his space at
the barrier.

the mosh pit in 1996 is an ANACHRONISM. the problem is bored mtv
watching guys (and women) who think that it is "cool" and "rad" to
"mosh". those assholes wouldn't know a *real* mosh pit if they walked
straight through one.

a real mosh pit is about enjoying the music and not about using it as an
excuse to hit strangers and grope women you don't know. a real mosh pit
is a community, in a real mosh pit you pick up anyone who has fallen down.
i have been in pits for black flag and the dead kennedys and the clash
and the fucking beastie boys back when they were a hardcore band. they
were energetic and squishy and hot and you might get a few bruises, but
they were NOTHING like trying to be down front at concerts lately.
it is not about the music. and that has nothing to do with 'bandwagon
jumpers'. at least a bandwagon jumper is vaguely interested in music.

and i won't be going to lolla for sure after reading this. this is about
what i thought it would be like. i just really feel sorry for ben.

oh, i forgot to mention, there's a page set up about this moshing
bullshit, created after someone died because of moshing at a smashing
pumpkins show in ireland: http://www.muohio.edu/~carmance/moshing/

think she is right (aside from us serious lunatics [hi carolyn!! ;-)]

the gorge show was announced the day the showbox tickets went on sale.
Aaron posted a long diatrabe to the list about it i remember....

the tickets went on sale june 21. the gorge can sell out quickly
depending on the artist. lolla has not sold out yet, last year it didn't
sell out until day of show.

the gorge show is july 30, not august as previously stated.

go to the lolla page or call ticketmaster for more details.

Hey everybody!

First - I guess I should introduce myself(Marianne)....this is my first post
to the list. I've been on the list for about 6 months, but I usually just
read what everyone else has to say. I never knew there were so many people
as obsessed with SG as I am. Anyway I'm from Texas - not too far from
Shroom.

I had to get my 2 cents in about this aution thing - I just found SOMMS in a
local CD shop for $8.99!!!!! This was of course the best purchase I''ve ever
made. I've really only seriously been looking for it for about a year. I
really would hesitate to pay the kind of money these guys are talking about -
like other people have said before - it's just not that rare.

Anyway just wanted to say hey & give my opinion......

Caryn,
Thanks for the update. I don't always have time to read all of the
messages, so I appreciate your answer. I think I had gotten the date
from the SG site, so I'm surprised that it has changed. If SG is going
to be in WA on the 30th are they still going to be in San Jose on Aug. 4th.

I know you probably have better things to do than answer my questions, but
you seem to be the most helpful. The Bass ticket # only gives me the N.
California and Nevada listings. (Pretty limited)

Thanks for being so helpful. I promise to be more thorough in reading
the messages. And, if you ever plan on visiting Tahoe, I'll be more than
happy to let you in on all of the cool places to hang. That's what we
fellow SG lunatics are for.

Thanks again,
Sherry

I found this in an old Reflex mag. Thought you all might be

Penned by Cornell, "She's a Politician" is based on an incident
involving 'Garden guitar maniac Kim Thayil. While the band was on tour
with Danzig, Thayil met a woman in a bar. As Cornell recalls, "It went
from a discussion to a violent, bottle-throwing political argument."

Can't you just picture Kim in this situation!

i agree. a local record store recently had three copies for $80 each. i
was in same store just last night and they have one left, and it is
stickered $60.

i asked the guy at the counter if they entertainied offers on stuff in the
glass case. (i was going to offer them $30 for their copy.)

"sorry. our prices are non-negotiable."

"see ya!" and i walked out.

>Oh yea,In the May issue of goldmine I saw BMF/SOMMS being auctioned,
>starting Bid $40.00.the address of the auctioneer was from Seattle.

after living here (seattle) for a few months it is my impression that most
music stores here think their shit doesn't stink when it comes to prices for
local music. if you want collectable seattle music stuff then seattle is
the *last* place you should look, since they treat items like they are gold
or something.

christ one store over in bellevue had the first three pearl jam fan club
singles for $75 each. they are worth more like $40, $25, and $20 for the
'91, '92 and '93, respectively. and as far as i'm concerned the '95 single
is worth $5 (what you pay for it) since there are well over 100,000 copies
of it floating around, yet stores here get one and say it's "rare" and want
$50 for it. there are probably more '95 fan club singles out there than
there were of the 7" spin the black circle single that i see in stores all
the time for $5.

these stores do not get my money. i'd rather go to places that aren't out
to financially rape people.

i dont think this has been dicussed but can anyone besides me hear
someone( it sounds like Matt to me) say " its perfect" at the
begining of Switch Opens. he says it real quick before the intro. i
noticed it on a tape i made from the vynil and i can hear it on the
cd.

Ive also listened to Bootcamp alot and in my opinion this is about
the incident where Chris publicly trashed Micheal Jackson. the lyrics
seem to be in his point of view about having to be perfect and pure
when you're a celebrity and being politicaly correct. Like everyone
has to be a perfect stalwart clone ( i borrowed that from a Bad
Religion song) . I have a surround sound system and i tried to set it
diofferent ways so maybe just the background mumblings could be heard
but it didnt work because in all cases the guitar was with it. I also
did that with some other songs and it can make cool effects , like in
the song Superunknown the guitar( sounds like Chris's) is isolated
and thats all you can hear.
ayway i keep thinking i hear Micheal Jackson and 500 dollars being
uttered in that opening mysterious voice.

But in the SG article, the writer didn't seem to feel SG were like that. So

i will try to offer my theory here (which is, of course, just my
theory):

the 'hammer of the gods' label bestowed upon led zep in the 60's was a
compliment. the norse god thing, robert plant's blonde tresses,
comparison of their sound to that of the norse god thor, etc etc etc.

then that tell-all, in-the-edgewater-with-the-shark,
jimmy-with-miss-pamela-and-the-whips book came out, using the same
title. so henceforth, the association is that of the rockstar antics,
and not the former positive association...
