Soundgarden is one of my favorite bands, AIC and Zep rank just ahead.
One of my favorite soundgarden songs that gets no radio airplay is
"fourth of July". I've never had the chance to see Soundgarden live,
the closest they have been to Sacramento is U.C. Berkley. How come on
the last tour they werent using basketball areanas as venues, was it
a decision by the band to do smaller venues. They
could definitly get 10-12 thousand to show up. Does anyone know why.

Hey everyone, i've been gone for a bit and may be responsible for some
bounced mail. Sorry about that, I know it's annoying, but that's fixed now.
Anyway, I just downloaded the sound file of shroom. it was so cool. I sat
here just smiling for like ten minutes because of all that it meant to me.
Not only was it funny that shroom is infamous within the band (I love
matt saying, "Chris, this girl _really_ likes you"), but this is also
another indication of how the internet is changing our lives and making
the world a smaller place.

Of course, in the confusion of coming home from school, I missed all the
online and radio stuff.
I really missed reading the list, too. It was cool seeing that some list
members got to see the seattle show. I wish that I could have been there,
but you can't have everything.

Anyway, in less than 9 hours I'll be at lollapalooza (somms shirtless),
so I'm very excited and thought that I should write to the list. I don't
really know why, but I really needed to share my excitement with someone.

So, I guess after I recover from the festivities i'll post how it was.

Actually, I never thought of PJ as a bootlegger, and I would hardly put her
in the same category as ticket scalpers! She gave me a quite a few things
from Silver Management (she is also informed in advance of when/where SG will
be doing interviews) so I'm assuming that she's authorized to sell SG
merchandise...she has hats, T's, posters, photos, etc., and audio as well as
video tapes. If it hadn't been for PJ I never would have had the opportunity
to see all of the early SG interviews, and her compilations also made it
possible for me to see all of their videos, (I hadn't even seen BHS). I was
in the hospital for months, and my when my aunt brought in the VCR and SG
compilations (along with all the other things PJ had included "free of
charge"), it really meant a lot to me...we literally think of PJ as a life-
saver.

I'm the only one who does.

I also decided to sell my copy of BadMotoorFinger/SOMMS by way of
auction. So if you would like this, the bidding starts at $30.

Sorry for the confusion

I'm selling my extra copies of HIV Baby/Room 1000 years wide. I have
both the black and grape vinyl versions. This is the promo single that
Sub Pop sent out to single club members.

MB on grape = $20
MB on black = $15

The Molson 'incident'...last year Chris said he misses the
challenge of winning over an apathetic audience. SG built
their following one fan at a time by touring small clubs in
the U.S. and abroad for years. Wasn't the Molson concert an
ideal situation for them? They were paid deservedly for a
band of their quality and name and at the same time
challenged themselves by not playing to their fans. I
wonder if many of the 400 Molson attendees didn't actually
groan with disappointment when SG came onstage. Do we know
that the crowd was thrilled with their 'blind date'...or
repulsed? I'm sure the guys didn't care too much whether
people went screaming from the venue in disgust or if they
broke down with tears of joy, but I do think it may have
been an interesting experience. Rewarding both economically
     and artistically as performers. -Vikki

why does this seem like a ripoff to me? didn't we go through this a few
months ago???!

you are most certainly entitled to ask whatever price you like for the
record, but considering that you told me that you got your copy of SOMMS
for $15, to "start the bidding" at $30 seems a tad on the profiteering
side when you are amongst fans.

Considering that SOMMS goes from anywhere from $30 to $80, why can't you
just name your price and give it to the first person who writes to you,
or put the names in a hat and draw 'em. but this auction mentality is
ugly, imo. i was interested in the HIV Baby single but i'm not going to
enter into an *auction* for it. there are plenty of copies out there.

fyi, gang, this guy *just* joined the list after hearing andrea and i
talk about it on the ticket line two weeks ago. i suspect he joined just
to make a fast buck....

this may have changed, but these are the basic rules:

1) you can bring one plastic bottle of water, but it MUST be sealed.
2) you can bring a "bag lunch" -- eg, food in your backpack within reason
(not a commercial quantity ;-) ), but no coolers.

- --> both of these rules can depend on the venue and even the individual
security person who searches your bag! if you can't get it through one,
try another. ;-)

other stuff you might want to bring:
1) hat
2) sunscreen/lip balm
3) an old sheet or something else to sit on

don't bring/wear anything you really care about if you plan on going down
front. ;-)

gee, why do i think there's going to be a sudden increase in the sale of
disposable cameras this summer? ;-)

i would recommend the *waterproof* ones for lolla (or any outdoor daytime
festival where you're going to be in the pit). my photos of pearl jam in
sf were taken with one of those (http://www.nwlink.com/~clr/pj.html if
you're interested in results)

otherwise, for nighttime or indoor shows you need the ones with a flash.
shutter won't stay open long enough otherwise.

btw, disposables are only going to work for you if you're prepared to be
RIGHT down front. don't be one of those people flashing with an
instamatic (remember those?) from the back row...

<I thought the audience was rather mild. They certainly didn't know
the DOTU songs; I don't know them that well, but there was virtually no
reaction from the crowd when, say, Rhinosaur started.>

What?? To put it in CC's words himself, "Rhinosaur is Rockin!" And it
did. Forgive me, but I'm just not sure I can believe we were at the
same Soundgarden concert. IMO, it seemed like the crowd was very into
it. Then again, maybe it was because Caryn and I were singing at the
top of our lungs and screaming at the fact that, YES, they are playing
another song from DOTU!!! I screamed my recognition at every song I
knew (and that was all of them excluding the cover tunes).

And, I don't know, but when you feel the floor moving up and down
because the crowd is collectively hopping at the beginning of yet
another great song, seemingly due to the fact that they all knew what
it was because of the timing, it just leads me to believe that this guy
wasn't seeing or feeling the whole picture.

And that's okay. It *felt* like everyone else was screaming and
totally getting into it too. But really, I have no way of knowing what
was going on past my world of Soundgarden in front of me, Caryn to the
left, guy-who-crammed-in-next-to-me to the right and various assholes
trying to crawl over me (or whatever) behind me. I dunno, maybe just
the folks at the barricade are the only ones who felt the atmosphere
and actually knew the material (not including Andrea, Toni and Todd).
If that's the case, then I thank god again for my location.

Just $.02 on the selling-out/musical integrity discussion.

Something that seems to be more prevailent these days is bands disowning
earlier albums for one reason or another. SG has done it with LTL,
Nirvana did it with Nevermind, and other bands have made similar
comments. In both of those cases, the bands complained that they hated
the mixing, it wasn't the sound they wanted, etc. I find it hard to
understand why musicians would say these things about their work. It's
like anything else in life, you learn and grow as you mature, and
hopefully you do things better. I would think that at the time LTL or
Nevermind were finished, given the resources available to the bands,
their experience, etc., they were probably happy with what they'd
accomplished. Once they'd become more successful and experienced, and
could exercise more control, they made albums exactly the way they
wanted. I think it's great that SG was able to produce DOTU and get
exactly the sound they wanted; the results are obvious! It just seems
wrong to belittle earlier work, because it's not as refined as your
current effort. I know I'd be happy to make music half as good as LTL.

I'd have to disagree with you there Caryn. Auctions are "good" in my
opinion. I got the Louder Than Live CD Promo through an auction for
$40US. It usually sells for around $70. Besides, so what if John is
trying to make a profit... hell, this is a capitalist socitey! :) And
living in Canada I don't see too much rare SG stuff, its good to see
that John is giving people an opportunity to get rarities that we
can't get at our home turf. Just my own opinion...

I have a friend,Gary, who is the manager for the cd and tape dept at

4-5 weeks ago he received a pre-release info sheet. It described this box set.
2 cds ,one is an interview disc.In addition,is a metal SG badge,A booklet,
and will cost about $50.00.That's is all I know at the moment and I'll keep
posting updates as I get them.tomorrow the manager will call his source.
Gary pre-ordered 1 copy for me,SO I should be getting one when it is released.

very garagey sort of thing, but I'm not so sure. the production is
pretty good (done by the band themselves, but recorded by stuart
hallerman, I believe), it's not lo-fi at all. you can also hear most of
the instruments fairly well, so there are no problems there.

as for the music itself, I think it rocks. ben wrote quite a lot
of the stuff, and all of it is pretty cool. he sings on most of the
songs as well, which is great. matt didn't write any music for the
album, but wrote lyrics to the last track 'sad mcbain', which is possibly
the best song on the record. the first track is a cat steven's cover,
with added lyrics by ben (which he found legally difficult to arrange).
the rest of them are nice songs, made up of stuff written by john mcbain
(formerly of monstermagnet) and brian wood (andrew wood's brother).

my favourite songs are definitely down undershoe, sad mcbain,

Hi folks,

for me, UMOK is my least favourite of all SG stuff (albums and EPs) - I =

or just plain LOUD, then listen again! :-)

2. I agree with the Pearl Jam supporters, Caryn & co - their songs have =

But don't bag them on a mailing list that has nothing to do with them! =
(well, alright - they DON'T "have nothing to do with" Soundgarden - =

Although SG probably has a good hand in dictating tour stuff, it' usually
management that decides where they play--would it be cost effective to play
small

When did they have a chance to actually "release" songs? If I remember
correctly,
BMF was when they first starting receiving national att'n. And that was
after their 3rd single? (1)Rusty Cage (2)JCP (3)Outshined--plz correct me

anyway, BHS=not that radio friendly. . . when i first heard it i thought the
end dragged out too long, and it was kind of strange. I didn't think it
would be that big. My Wave got tossed in the crapper, and Spoonman is about

The only "radio Friendly" song they released from sU would be FoBD. And the

Nah....they haven't played live in 2 years. They probably figured they
could use the practice, and if they fucked up, who would care? (1)not a

Funny.. I got tix to this show weeks ago. I think the reason why they

his problem is that he's masquerading as a sg fan when all he is is
someone trying to take advantage of the list and the fact that some of us
are desparate for SOMMS and other material.

when we were on line, the *first* thing he asked me and andrea was if
people on this list were looking for SOMMS. not, is it a cool list, not,
what is it like, not, what do you talk about.

i don't have a problem with auctions per se -- i too have gotten some
great deals -- it's just that here we are suppoed to be among fans. just
like andrea, who could have sold her ticket last thursday for as much as
$150 (or more), gave it to bonnie for $20, face value. chris sat at home
thursday afternoon dialing like a maniac, and if we'd gotten more
tickets, we would have given them to any other list member at cost, or
would have stood outside the showbox that night and done the same thing.

last year i went to see pearl jam in milwaukee. i got the ticket (at
cost) from a fan on the mailing list who couldn't go. she had two
tickets, i took her other one, and sold it (at cost) to a 10 year old kid
who had NEVER seen pj before. there were scalpers out front selling
tickets for $50 or more.

if i go to a record store and i see somms or HIV baby for $60, i don't
argue with them (i might try to bargain them down, like chris did tonight
;-) ). it is their store, their right to set what price they think is
fair. if i see an ad in goldmine or on the newsgroup, listing prices or
calling an auction, no problem, that person is a dealer or collector or
store, or getting rid of stuff they don't care about any more. however,
i'd like to think that on this list we are a community of fans who
are not here to take advantage of each other. perhaps i'm just being naieve.

if any regular list member was doing it, i'd also have far less of a
problem (tho i would of course still argue with them ;-) ). i just feel
that this person came barging in here, as it were, with the point of
making maximum bucks and not contributing to the discussion in any way.
and the fact taht he's also on the AIC list doing the same thing kind of
backs up my point.

then again, this is all of course just my opinion. if it means waiting
to acquire the hiv baby single, so be it.

their fine musicmanship & honestly musically. Most don't even consider them
