Do many people out there have a bubble jet printer???

Canon makes t-shirt transfers. They say they only work with Canon
printers but thats bull-shit. I have a HP printer and they work fine
on it. Anyways... if you have a bubble jet printer you can make a
t-shirt transfer with Canon's special thingy's and then iron it on to
a plain white shirt. It may look kinda generic, but at least it would
be a way to recognize/find people. Or theres always the cliche: "I'll
be wearing a red plaid flannel shirt and really ugly green pants with
pink polka dots and a hat that says 'I Love Donuts'...." Whichever
works I guess...

I can relate to that. I'm sensitive, too and also shy (Oh, no! They
might be mean to me!!) so I think this will be a good experience for
me.

Wow, you escaped! I've never been to Lawton that I can remember, but
I know where it is. Hope to visit WA someday--it looks beautiful in
photos I've seen. Don't they have some really good bands there? One
in particular, but I can't think of their name right now--something
about noise and growing vegetables.

> > ...and also that it is perfectly acceptable to be a sg fan and *not* like

I sure do agree with that! In fact, I'd be really surprised if alot
of SG fans did like IS considering the difference in their music. The
one thing we can agree on is that we're SG fans. Beyond that,
well...it's a good thing we don't agree on everything or there
wouldn't be much to discuss. Come to think of it, I didn't like them
much the first time I listened to their music, and I can say the same
for SG, too. And I hated TOTD at first because it wasn't what I
expected. Then I went on to play the cassette until it wore out.
It's funny how the SG songs I liked the least initially (Drawing
Flies, JCP, Face Pollution come to mind), often become my favorites.
Obviously, one reason for this is because most of SG's music isn't
exactly the most accessible stuff you've ever listened to, or maybe
I'm just slow catching on. Well, enough of this inane babbling...

I wonder if any of you people who are ripping Soundgarden for their
"commercialism" have considered the fact that DOTU was self-produced?
Now, I don't know much about the recording industry, but doesn't that
mean that they made most of the decisions regarding content, etc.?
Perhaps the older albums, (which I love dearly, but I think DOTU is
better) which some of you think are superior to DOTU, may NOT have
been our guys being true to themselves and their music, but DOTU,
which they produced themselves, IS being true to themselves and their
music? Maybe the sound on DOTU is what they always wanted and couldn't
do because of other pressures. Maybe now that they can produce their
own stuff they can finally do what they always wanted to do. Its
possible that the albums you think are better are actually not what
Soundgarden themselves would consider their best efforts. In fact, I
think I remember reading that Chris in particular wasn't happy with
the situation surrounding Ultramega OK, or maybe it was Screaming Life
and FOPP, (does anyone else remember anything about this?) I should
look it up, I'm sure I have it somewhere.

Anyway, consider the fact that this album was self-produced. I don't
have anything to say about the Molson thing because I think too much
has been made of it, but I can't imagine SG "selling out" and I truly
don't think they have. Of course I also think DOTU is the best work
they've done, so maybe I just don't know music. All I know is I still
love Soundgarden and find each and every album unique and special.

Matt was the main person who talked.. He was being pretty sarcastic. It was
funny.. I don't remember seeing Ben but he may have been there.. I've
actually seen two different versions. In one there are all the outtakes and
Matt is talking at the end saying "Oh, you want me to act? You want to me
to be an Ac-tor?" In the other, they edited out the whole last minute or so
out outtakes..
I've also heard Spoonman playing over the closing credits of Bill Nye a
couple of times..
I don't know how he got them, but since it films in Seattle, he probably
just asked.. <shrug>

This was on a few years ago, during the first season, but the band did not
make an appearance. They showed Bill Nye in the studio (Bad Animals-that's
where the show's post-production is done) with Brendan O'Brien mixing
SuperUnknown. They discussed how a mixing board was like a big stereo, but
that you could turn up individual instruments, one at a time. They started
with the drums, then the bass, and by the time everything was in the mix,
"Kickstand" was playing. Check out their site:
http://nyelabs.kcts.org/nyeverse/shows/e112.html. This is the page for that
episode (I have it Bookmarked, ya know.) Also, if you look around, there is
a version of the "Bill Nye the Science Guy" theme song done by Mudhoney.

hrmmmm... i have to say that i really kinda disagree. i thought that his
post was actually very respectful, which surprised the fuck out of me
(tho it shouldn't have). most bands when they reach the level that sg
has really start to forget about their fans, or forget what it was like
to be a fan, and speak to us in words of one syllable. as to the 'i
commend you..' statement, i thought it was a nice, non-kiss ass,
non-patronizing way to say 'i think it's cool that there are 500 of you
who want to talk about my band EVERY DAY'.
when the smashing pumpkins were in seattle and they did their
'meet billy and ask him questions event' one fan asked, 'how does it feel
to be in a room with a bunch of people who are totally obsessed with
you'. billy responded by saying, "one, i would ask 'why', two, i would
say, 'don't you have anything better to do, three, i would say, 'thank you'."
i thought that was a particularly touching yet not patronizing answer...
and matt's mail kinda reminded me of that attitude...
i also was kinda proud on how the list *did not* change its
attitude since getting that mail from matt. there were one or two cute
comments, but there wasn't a barrage of people drastically changing their
behavior. christ, someone purportely from pearl jam's management showed
up on the newsgroup and was *waaaaay* patronizing and insulting and the
amount of people who kissed butt big time was just huge. *that* was
embarassing.
shroom, you've been too quiet lately! ;-) where ya been????

Yeah, it was a little bit patronizing.. I don't think it was intentional,
though (I hope not anyway). I guess it's kind of hard to sit there and read
about people totally idolizing you though.. <shrug> It doesn't matter all
that much to me whether or not it was patronizing though because I like
SG's music regardless of what the people in SG are like (not that I'm
making judgement on anyone's character, though).
Did anyone else notice how the volume of mail dropped after Matt's letter
or is it just my paranoid mind?

This recent talk of Soundgarden selling out sickens me. I really don't
think Soundgarden has done anything to warrant this questioning of them.
Sure, as fans, we're allowed to criticize them for anything, but I don't
see what they have done to make us even bring up this topic.

>songs like black hole sun and burden in my hand have come
>under fire here for being a very-much watered down version of soundgarden,

I personally don't like Black Hole Sun because I don't think it's a good
song. But some list members don't like it because some "fake" types have
latched on to it. Well, that isn't anybody's fault that the song has been
misused, in a sense. And it sure as hell isn't Soundgarden's fault.

Damn straight. No band stays the same from first album to last album. It's
as simple as that. You can name any band you want; their debut album
doesn't sound like their last or most recent album. Any band: Pearl Jam
(compare Ten and Vitalogy), Nirvana (Bleach and In Utero), Led Zeppelin (I
and In Through the Out Door; vast difference), Smashing Pumpkins (Gish and
MCIS) and the list infinitely goes on. For argument's sake, I named my
favorite bands. The same is with Soundgarden (Screaming Life/Fopp and
DOTU). Bands undeniably change musically over time. Period.

Many would say DOTU is the most commercial Soundgarden album. IMHO, it
isn't. Superunknown is. Incredible as the album is, it also contains the
most "radio-friendly" tunes. DOTU reminds me a lot of the good old days,
back around 1987 and 1988, the Screaming Life/Fopp/Ultramega OK era. For
example, you could substitute Applebite for 665/667 on UOK. And An Unkind
would also nicely fit on that album. Never Named and Never the Machine
Forever could be on SL/Fopp. Basically, the point is, after Superunknown, I
believe Soundgarden has reverted to its dirtier (and better) past.

Now, regarding selling out. I believe selling out means when a band changes
its attitude, appearance, and music, in order to become more popular. Has
Soungarden changed its attitude? No, they cared about the music then, and
they care about it now. Have they changed their appearance? No, well Chris
yes, but the rest haven't, and Kim has had that same bitchin' beard for god
knows how long. Have they changed their music? No, like I said before, DOTU
can be likened to the earlier stuff. Soundgarden has not done any of the
above. They have not sold out. End of story.

Hey, I just got a copy of AITS in the mail today. I examined the

"Congratulations! You are an iMusic winner! Enclosed is the Soundgarden

wouldn't it be great if someone on this list organized a tape tree so
that we all didn't have to patronize bootleggers?

Subject: my $0.02

Hey guys, wussup. I haven't been on the digest for a while. I've
been basically reading the digest and chilling. However, I read
some stuff that got me thinking. But before I start, I just want
to extend some major props to the boys in SG. They have earned
my respect continuously over the years, and it doesn't look like
things are gonna change. Now on to the goods:
To Jeremy: You are entirely correct. "Right Turn" is my
favorite song on Sap because of Chris. When his low voice comes
in, it totally bolsters Layne's high melody line. Add Mark's
third voice and you have some serious scrotom shrivelling music
going on. It's so cool, it kicked my boo-tay the first time I
heard it, and it hasn't failed in doing so every time since. I
must add that of the three singers, Chris gets the most props, if
only for his really wide range of singing. If you listen to the
end of the song, Chris just starts screaming "well, it's hard to
believe..."man, it is soooo intense.
To Caryn Rose & Chris Mansfield: I really appreciate
the fact that SOMEONE is sticking up for Eddie. To whoever wrote
that ranting tirade against PJ; you had some valid points, but it
was still wrong to dis PJ. Eddie and co. tried to do something
for the fans; ie., toppling Ticketmaster. Obviously, it was a
flaming failure, but that isn't the point. At least they tried.
Blaming the whole deal with the aborted tour on the band is just
wrong. As for that whole "PJ selects crappy venues and security
teams" thing; wrong. Eddie is a well documented supporter of
stopping moshing. They've fired security teams before (in
Australia) for being too rowdy with the kids, and Eddie's gone
off on morons who mosh to songs like Daughter and Black. PJ
couldn't really help their venues: how many places do you know
that do not have exclusive contracts with Ticketmaster? Not a
whole lot, are there? IMHO, PJ's not touring/releasing a new
album cuz they're simply not ready to just yet. Hopefully, that
will change. We all know why Kurt decided to blow himself away-
he felt that his music's purity was being diluted/commercialized.
He wrote In Utero to piss off the bandwagon jumpers, but it only
made him more famous. Finally, he couldn't take performing and
writing anymore. He felt he was just posing/acting it out for
the kids. Basically, he crossed the line where he wrote and
performed for everyone but himself. The realization of that and
the accomponying guilt caused him to exit stage left, as it were.
I think Eddie's in the same position--he just doesn't want to
fake it anymore. Until he regains his sense of musical purity,
I think PJ is gonna be out of commission. Perhaps that's why
Billy Corgan wrote Bullet w/Butterfly wings; "but can you fake
it for just one more show?"
On the flip side, SG have handled their fame very well--another
reason why they kick booty. All in all, they're one of the few
bands that consistently improves as they get older. Now how
many bands do that?

Subject: The future of the Unofficial Soundgarden Homepage
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

Our friend URB@NO has certainly outdone himself this time, diving
headfirst into VRML and creating SOMMSLAND, which I predict will be
the model for the future of the Unofficial SG Homepage as well as the
type of thing you'll see on the vast majority of the Web.

Due to the relative complexity of VRML (to HTML), it's going to be a
long time, maybe even a year or more, before 3D worlds written in VRML
become close to becoming standard, but it's never to early to start.

So in the spirit of looking ahead, I'm pleased to announce the opening
of URB@NO's creation at http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/vrml/ -- it's
still very much in the construction phase, but definitely worth a look.

You'll need VRML viewer software for this -- the best idea right now
is to use Netscape 3.x with Live3D.

Please check it out and send any suggestions you might have (and there
are already plenty of things in the works) to me or to URB@NO
(al703635@campus.ccm.itesm.mx).

I won a trip to this concert courtesy of imusic, and here's my take.
This is also my first post to this group. I'm woefully underknowledged
on Soundgarden info compared to the rest of you, but I am a big
fan, whatever that counts for (probably not much). It was probably
the best show I've ever been to. Soundgarden can simply do anything
they want to do right now, and that's speaking from a non-diehard
perspective. I'm a bit disappointed in the material from DOTU
compared with Superunknown, but I did like the "new" song
they played...

Darcy (vpatten@ocean.washington.edu) wrote:
" We got there just as the opening band was to go on only to find a line
" curving its way around the corner and well away from the doors. People
" were actually *in line* for a general admission show. Amazing!

Not amazing here in the Triangle. There were a couple of people
offering body organs to go along with me, but my girlfriend won :).

I agree that waiting in line (for a long time anyway) doesn't make much
sense, as it was easy to muscle your way to the front at the show
no matter when you arrived. Which I didn't do, as my GF is
small and I didn't want her to be crushed. We settled on a spot dead
- -center and about 10 people back and that turned out perfectly.

" I took
" about a half hour to make it to the door where we were metal detected (good
" thing I left my gun at home) and pat searched.

We got in line about 8:30 and it took about 20 mins for us. We came
in just about when Devilface started. I had a bag of trinkets
in my pocket that the dude wanted to check out but they were really
cool about all that.

" Devilhead opened (loosegroove band?). They were alright, but we weren't
" quite interested in packing onto the floor just yet,

I actually liked Devilhead quite a bit. The singer was quite a character.
The rest of the players looked like rejects from Ratt, but the music
was pretty good, especially the song where the Beck/Cobain wannabe
sang. They were giving out free Devilhead single CDs after the show,
and for some reason Erin & I each got one. I would buy their album
if only out of curiosity :).

" so we headed to the
" bar for a beer and a shot of cuervo. We drank those pretty quickly and
" decided it was time to jocky for position.

No alcohol for the Lanes this night, tho it probably would've made
the overly long Devilhead set (9 songs!) go more quickly.

" We settled in in the middle left section of the floor, and about five
" minutes later Soundgarden appeared on stage. They opened with a cover
" of a doors tune, that for the life of me I can't think of the name.

OK, ***THIS*** is what I'm extremely curious about.

After the show I was swearing that the opener was Searching With
My Good Eye Closed from BMF. But not sure, as I've only listened
to BMF about 5 times (got it a month ago).

BUT my GF swears the song was Waiting For The Sun by the Doors!

So what's the DEAL?

" The
" sound was so big--seemed to fill the room perfectly. It was nice to
" be in a place where my ears didn't have to settle for too much bass/too
" much treble.

The sound was perfect, but it probably wouldn't have been if it
hadn't been set up for Cornell. Which means mainly that Cornell
was never at the mercy of the low-fi setup. I got a little irked
at Shepherd's bass feedback a few times, but that's a small complaint.

" Squeezing through people unobtrusively takes a little doing, but if
" you don't struggle and just kind flow on through, it's not too hard.

You probably squeezed thru me then :). I don't care much for people
who try to barrel their way into the crowd and put a hand on you
and try to shove you out of the way. Luckily I'm big enough that
I can give these people a shove back and put them on their ass
on the floor :).

If you want to move up in a crowd, the only way to do it is to
be polite -- be willing to take some time to get up there and
for heaven's sake DON'T SHOVE! And for ultra-heaven's sake
DON'T SHOVE GIRLS!!! Unless you like getting kicked in the cojones...

" I was able to get about ten feet from the stage--and there was actually
" a little breathing room, so I hung for awhile, closed my eyes and
" felt the crowd--felt the music. I really do kinda understand 'the pit'
" mentality. It is incredible to flow with those around you. To feel their
" energy.

Pit stuff is cool. I moshed like a madman at a recent Rancid show.
Couldn't do it at the ShowBox, and didn't really want to -- Soundgarden
really isn't moshing music. And I had my GF to take care of.

The key for moshers is to not bug people that don't want to mosh.
Which sounds simple, but I suppose people get drunk and assume
- -everyone- wants to mosh. Which is when they get a kick in the cojones.

" Unfortunately a lot of times you end up feeling it a little
" too forcefully.

That's part of this kind of thing. How often do world-class artists
play clubs with <1000 capacity ? We knew this and stayed 10 rows
back. 'Twas a good decision.

" The security guys did a really good job of keeping
" things in line. Every time someone would try to crowd surf, they
" would pull them down immediately and shine a flash light in their face.
" One guy got kicked out really early on, and that probably did as much
" for crowd control as anything else.

Hee. We counted at least 11 people getting kicked out by security :),
and that doesn't include the people at the front. Everyone got
a good laugh at the two gays who couldn't get their joints lit
getting led out -- those were the first.

I'd never been to Seattle before, and I'm very impressed by the
way the security acted. They bounced a lot of people, but as far
as I could tell, they all -needed- to be bounced.

" I stayed that close just long enough to work up a good sweat and experience
" that part of the show.

What songs were going on at that time ?

" and it just made me really happy to
" see so many people totally enjoying themselves.

I thought the audience was rather mild. They certainly didn't
know the DOTU songs; I don't know them that well, but there was
virtually no reaction from the crowd when, say, Rhinosaur started.

" Soundgarden stuck almost entirely to songs off of Superunknown and
" the new album.

I'm interesting in knowing the playlist. Here's what I've got:

Searching With One Eye Closed / Waiting For The Sun (?)
Let Me Drown
Pretty Noose

(below not in order)
BMF: Outshined
SU: Fell On Black Days, Black Hole Sun (solo by CC), Spoonman, 4th Of
July. NO Mailman, My Wave, Superunknown, Day I Tried To Live,
Head Down, Tendrils. But I'm a SU junkie :).

" Chris did a solo of black hole sun that was just
" incredible.

I didn't care much for this one. CC seemed bored to me. I'd
much prefer an acoustic or synthesized or (something funky)
version myself. Maybe play Moby's version.

" He seems as powerful as the first time I saw them open for Janes
" Addiction--he just doesn't take his shirt off as much anymore.

CC ruled the house in every aspect. He was thrilled and fully
alive to be there, from the start to near the end. I noticed
that the set was biased toward songs that CC wrote, but as
a newbie I don't know what to make of that.

" Their new material sounds so much more powerful live than recorded.
" There's no mistaking it's not memorex.

Oh Lordy this is damn straight. A lot of DOTU sounds flat, or at
least makes you think "man I'd like to see Soundgarden really sink
their teeth into this".

And they did it at ShowBox. DOTU is full of great songs, but
they're not particularly recorded well, and again, Soundgarden
sounds flat on most of them. Not so live.

I'd obviously love to find a boot of the ShowBox show :).

" The peak was definitely the encore.

Blah, I disagree. A massively long dull instrumental for an encore?
No. I was hoping for My Wave / Mailman / Superunknown. My personal
highlights right now are Let Me Drown, Ty Cobb, Spoonman, and Fell On Black
Days. I thought the crowd got a little too wacky over Outshined.

" I think everyone went home happy.
"
" I did.

As did we. Would've loved to hear Mailman tho...
