on this day of celebration, I'd just like to get in first and
congratulate seth and everyone else who made the unofficial soundgarden
homepage one of the best sites on the net. the collection of information
and work contained on the page is a credit to us all. hopefully everyone
will continue to contribute so that the pope of soundgarden on the net can
keep on ignoring his classes in order to make our favourite page one of the
most comprehensive around. 100 000 hits and counting...

agreed. you've all done a tremendous job, and the fact that so many
people are able to work together on one project is heartening. don't
give up now people -- i certainly won't. for those of you who sent me
stuff while i was on vacation, i promise i'll get to it asap. the ol'
inbox is overflowing with contributions, and i'm working as fast as i
can to put them on the page. i'm only 11 days behind. :)

this summer is a time for all of us to work together to build a
comprehensive collection of reviews of lollapalooza. the idea is that
for each show, i will make available a form for you to submit your
reviews, and at the end of the summer, we'll have, in contrast to one
reporter who follows the band around and writes about it, a collection
of *many* fans' opinions about the event.

i'm sure jerm will want set lists for his tour database as well...

alas, not for me. the counter doesn't register hits from either my
personal and work computer -- just wouldn't be fair.

Subject: sg, pj and bad venues...

i was thinking tonight about someone who posted a diatriabe against pj a few
days ago, and their whole point focused on how pj selected a sucky venue in
their city to play in, and allowed a mosh pit, whereas the almighty
soundgarden NEVER pick a bad venue and of course there will NEVER be a mosh
pit there... and it suddenly dawned on me:

the armory. 1994.

sg for some reason only known to the band and the promoter decide to play a
venue in nyc that hasn't seen a concert since the rolling stones in 1966.
why they couldn't have played the paramount, a venue of the same size, but
with better sound & location, i don't know. i get to the venue... which has
NO acoustics... being completely lined with TILE (yes, just like a large
bathroom). it's one HUGE room, no acoustic baffling AT ALL... and even
worse... **NO** ventilation or airconditioning whatsoever.

and this is july. mid july in manhattan. do you have any idea how hot it
is in manhattan in july????

it took three songs for me to figure out what they were playing due to the
echo, and about 5 songs later i passed out from heatstroke. a great portion
of the audience was out in the lobby, or sitting along the edges of the
floor, men and women with their shirts off (hell, i would have sworn that
chris was wearing boxer shorts -- he came out with no shirt on), unable to
enjoy the show due to heat.

to make a long story short, my friends carried me out to the entrance, at
which point the guards said that if we went outside, we couldn't go back in.
they relented briefly for me to get some air and to have water poured over
my head, but none in my group were willing to go back and risk the heat
again. now, i know people who survived the shows just fine, but it was imo
UNCONSCIONABLE to perform in that venue. someone clearly didn't do their
homework. this is not the fault of the band, but is certainly the fault of
someone in management, and certainly the fault of the promoter.

i had heard at the time that it was the only venue in nyc that could truly
be general admission, which is why they played there. (the paramount has
seats along the back walls). it was my first time seeing soundgarden (and
btw, the ticket was only $18, but with ticketmaster charges, it cost me
*$24* in the end). they tried to do something different, they didn't
succeed, and the fans suffered in the end. that doesn't make them a sucky
band, or a horrible band, they just made a mistake. if they did it
CONSISTENTLY, that'd be one thing. unfortunately, it happened to be the one
show i got to see...

have i made my point?

thank you.

my recollection is a little hazy, but I think chris plays a
snippet of spoonman on acoustic guitar at some point in that movie.
there are probably some other little musical interludes in there too. I
also recall the rumour that there was an album recorded by chris and jeff
ament which was the citizen dick demo album (with titles taken from the
picutre on the inside sleeve of the singles soundtrack). anyone know
more details than I?

That rumor is somewhere on Seths page. I think its on the other resources
page. What happend was (i think) Jeff did the designs for the citizen dick
album cover and he made up all these song titles, and then as a joke Chris
made them into real songs. And two of them being Seasons and Spoonman. I
watched Singles tonight on TV and it sounded like all the Citizen Dick songs
were sung by Andrew Wood. But I'm not too sure since I've only heard about 2
MLB songs.

Hi! To answer your question, preety noose, yes, Chris' older brother,
Peter is in Inflatable Soule. He is the chief singer/songwriter for
the band, and actually, I think a couple of their sisters are in the
band too. You can hear the family resemblance in Peter's voice, and he
conveys the same type of emotional intensity in his music as does
Chris. The music is quite different from SGit leans toward folk rock
(at least to me), but they rock! Other people on the list are, I'm
sure, much more knowledgeable about IS than I am. I have their CD "So
Sad" and I've ordered the new EP, but haven't received it yet.

I can try to make you a copy, but my tape deck is pretty much fried and
I'm afraid it would be garbage. You can e-mail the band at
SOULEFC@aol.com or their mailing address is: Inflatable Soule, P.O.
Box 61132, Seattle, WA 98121. I ordered the new EP directly from the
band and the CD cost $9.00 (tapes of course would be cheaper). If this
doesn't work for you, let me know. I'll see what I can do. There are
some other Inflatable fans on the list, so maybe someone else can
help?!

Well, break's over. Gotta go back to work!

I agree with you blind dog. And may I add that music should be a fluid,
everchanging means of expression. We have discussed this before and no one

wants SG to be like AC\DC. The singer dies you get a new one that sounds
exactly like the dead one and go on making the exact same music. Kim,
Chris,
Ben and Matt are not the same people that wrote and played Ultramega or
even
Superunknown! We all change and hopefully grow as human beings. They also

mature and evolve as musicians! You don't have to like DOTU as much as
Badmotorfinger. But you have to give them credit for trying something
different. I think they write and record to #1 please themselves and than

hopefully please their fans. I just don't see them consciously trying to
make
*hot hits* toni BTW: maybe they did the Molson thang because the
company

yes, and do you understand *why* it looks that way? because music
journalists make it look that way by printing every tidbit about pearl jam
they can get their hands on. when ATN runs a story that pearl jam are *not*
releasing a new album this year... i'm sorry, but that is news? since when
is it major news that a band isn't releasing an album until the following
year? how many scores of worldwide-successful bands wait 3-5 years between
albums? and how many times do you see a major news story keeping tabs on
every aspect of a new record by them? yes, it happens. there are
exceptions to every rule. but go back and skim the number of pearl jam
headlines of ATN's back issues over the last 5 months or so. it bordered on
the ridiculuous considering the band wasn't doing anything except writing
and recording during that time.

can anyone here prove how long both soundgarden and pearl jam spent
recording, mixing, and doing artwork for their new albums? no?... i didn't
think so. even matt cameron can't answer both sides of that question.

I agree, Peter's voice is more contolled. However, I like Chris' more
unpredictable, wild-sounding vocals, that, at least to me, are more
suited to Soundgarden's music. Actually, I'm not sure how much
resemblance I'd hear if I didn't know they were brothers. Anyhow, they
both have great voices. Is the whole family musically talented? Well,

Well that will put a very large dent in their profits!!!! I always though we
should send Kim one of those hats you see on the Home Shopping network, you
know the one with two holders on each side and the long tubes that lead from
the hat down to mouth area.. That way Kim could keep his hands free to keep

Ultramega OK. I wouldn't have found them, but Brandi (she's on the list but
she just kind of lurks and never says anything) showed me where the SG
stuff was.
Here's a question, though... I saw 2 versions of the single for Fell On
Black Days. One was in a digipack and had 4 songs (2 of them from SOMMS,
the album version of FOBD, and a demo version of FOBD), the other was in a
normal case but had 4 different songs (other than the FOBD studio version).
Can anyone explain?
I also bought Singles..
I got Hater, too..
Oh yeah, Brandi and I went and saw Cable Guy too. The song that they're
playing in the car sounds like SG but it's not listed on the credits. I
just needed about 10 seconds more and I could have had it.. <sigh>
All in all, it was a pretty SG day..

Oh well, I have some listening to do...

Soundgarden Jam For JAMPAC

Hot show. Very hot show.

Last Thursday night, June 19, things really heated up as Soundgarden
performed a special benefit concert at the Showbox Theater in
Seattle. Fans were dripping with sweat in the packed venue, but not
just because the group was in top form. The air-conditioner was on the
blink, and when you get 1250 fans into the Showbox on a summer day
with no air-conditioning, well, things do get a bit sweaty. In any
case, the show raised money for three charitable organizations:
JAMPAC, the anti-censorship public interest group created by former
Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, the AIDS Research and Care Fund for
Pediatric AIDS and Share Wheel, an organization that provides the
homeless with storage lockers for their possessions. According to one
of our ace reporters who was on the scene, the group really rocked the
Soundgarden fans in attendance at the historic venue, where Duke
Ellington once played. They opened with the Doors' classic, "Waiting
for the Sun," and also slipped in a Captain Beefheart and the Magic
Band number. As for their own material, Soundgarden delivered a
powerful version of "Blow Up the Outside World," a ten minute or so
jam on "Boot Camp," and wrapped things up with an extended version of
"No Attention," all off their new album, Down on the Upside. A
highlight of the evening was a solo performance by Chris
Cornell--accompanying himself on electric guitar--of "Black Hole Sun."
Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard was there digging the scene. And speaking of
scenes, there was a big one outside the theater, where there were
numerous fans who couldn't get in, and scalpers hawking the scarce
tickets for over $100 each.

Of course, the concert was on June *20*, not June 19...

i'll offer a *differing* viewpoint here (big surprise, eh?) and state
that i personally do not like inflatable soule at all. it's not hate,
and they are perfectly competent and have a huge following, and peter's
voice is enjoyable, but they are about as far away from soundgarden in
feel, content and musical style as you can get...imho. ;-)

ok, there isn't MUCH SG content here, so buyer beware. On the new
compilation CD for the Surfrider Found., Helmet is playing a song called,
"army of me." Does anyone know if this is a new song, or are they
covering the Bjork (shutup seth :)) song, "army of me".... any info
mailed TO ME, would be apreciated....

SG content, Seth, also mark on the SNL page, that performance was the
first time SG had been on network television in prime time... i may be
wrong, but i believe i am correct.

Couldn't agree with you more Caryn, the majority of SG fans will not like I.S.
Don't think because you love SG you should like or will like I.S.. I would
suggest that if you are interested in I.S. - think about this first.. Do you
like the sounds of "Seal" or maybe "Collective Soul". I.S. has a slightly
more laid back sound, but I have been told they put on one great show, I would
kill to see them...

I also hear that Chris is a big supporter of his brothers band..

for those Chris Cornell buffs out there (i guess thats all of us), an
example of how powerful his voice is is the song "right turn" no the
'sap' EP from AiC... Even in mid-song, when Chris is at the bottom of the
mix, his voice still carries the song alot. Don't get me wrong, i think
layne is a good singer as well (sometimes) and even Mark Arm does an
excellent job on this song, i just think that Chris almost dominates this
song....

Not to be the semantics police, but technically, Saturday Night Live is not
on during "Prime Time" which ends at 11:pm. It is, as far as I know, the
first time SOUNDGARDEN has been on network TV.

I can totally sympathize with you here. I did the same thing, reading
the archived digests, subscribing and finally making my first post.
But before that first message to somms, I tested the waters by
emailing to people directly and ended up making friends with those people.

I've had a couple people rip apart some things I wrote. The first one
really hurt my feelings. I let it go after I never heard back from the
individual when I mailed them directly questioning if I had interpreted
their meaning and intention correctly. The second one I found kind of
funny, since I usually try not to say stuff that will offend. It got
some stuff flying around, but I did not participate. I'm a "sensitive
type" person and usually care what others think, but this "arena" has
toughened me up some. I still care what my friends think though.

<I've been a SG addict since LTL and so far, this addiction shows no
signs of letting up. Since I don't personally know anyone whose
enthusiasm for SG is as totally out of proportion as mine, the list
gives me my daily fix (besides listening to the music, of course).>

This is my reason for being a member too. It might be safe to say
that's why most of us are here. (No one to relate to, to get excited
with about the up and coming SG related stuff, and so on.) I've met
some fantastic people on the list, emailing them daily, etc. Some of
us met in person last week at the Showbox (Caryn, Chris, Andrea, Toni
and myself). The BEST show I've ever seen and the most fun I've had at
a concert/show! Being with the folks I was with was half of that fun.
It would NOT have been the same.

<(If this has already been discussed, forgive me.) For those of you who
are IS fans, the last song on So Sad is obviously about the Cornell
family, and the little boy he talks about has to be Chris. I think
it's interesting that Peter writes such personal lyrics, while Chris
seems to intentionally avoid any personal revelations. I know brothers
are not necessarily alike, but you can't help comparing. Has anyone
else noticed this? >

Definitely. A lot of the songs makes me think about the family. The
lyrics to so sad the song "man sits inside a boy/boy sits inside a
man", etc. seem similar to me, to the lyrics in never named "I look
like a man and feel like an ant" and "I'm just a baby who looks like a
boy." Right now I can't think of other ones, but there may be some. I
think Peter may be more outgoing, but is also a real sincere and caring
fellow. I don't know for sure, just a personal observation and opinion.
Maybe that's why he can write in a more obvious personal manner. I
really don't want to compare the two as people.

Saturday night I had the extreme pleasure of seeing IS play at the
Fenix (with Andrea again!) and, afterward, to meet Peter, Katy, Suzy
and the rest of the band. I told Peter (all of them) how I've been
trying to see them for so long and this was my first show and how great
I thought they were. He was very nice and interested. The sisters
were both very nice as well. I sat and had an extended conversation
with Suzy on several topics. I mentioned being at the Showbox and she
said, "I was there too. Wasn't it great?" Of course, I agreed, but I
didn't want to talk too much about SG, since it was "their" night.
[Funny side note: I did happen to say my husband doesn't like SG at
all. And Katy goes, "Oh yeah, Tim Cochran. I know Tim Cochran." He's
sort of an "infamous" type.]

I just thought it was really neat that they are that accessible and
really seem to care about their fans. I know they aren't huge (yet),
but they do have fans and the numbers are growing. I just don't see
that part of them changing a whole lot down the road. Who knows. I
thought it was cool of them to be that attentive and responsive. So
first thing at work Monday morning, I emailed them a thank you note.

Something I just noticed: the similarity of coloring on their album
covers. DOTU and so sad are both done with the black background
melting into that orange/yellow color, with rippling water and shadowy
effects. Even the band name (muted letters) and title (brighter color
to stand out) appear similar. Oooo. The Golden Boy EP is all in
gold/yellow with the band name in white letters on a black oblong.
SuperUnk is all black background with the orangey faces. Its a real
black/yellow/orange thing both bands have going on. Not z huge thing, I know.

<Also, I really enjoyed the concert reviews. I've never seen SG live.
As far as I know, they've never been to this God-forsaken state (can't
say I blame them), so I was pretty disappointed when they cancelled the
Okla. City Lolla. Well, at least I can live vicariously thru those
lucky enough to be there.>

I can appreciate your "pain" of living in OK. I lived in Lawton for
almost three years. What a change from WA. It really made me
appreciate home when I moved back. Lost of trees, green grass, bodies
of water, brown - not red - dirt. And REAL mountains. They had Mount
John and it was a hill that you drove to the top with a parking lot.
But yikes, the tarantulas, that was an eye-opener!

Hey, sorry this got so long. I got carried away!

Subject: Calm down People

Sommsters,
A few brief observations, I hardly think that the corporations are
extremely concerned with keeping anyone down. There whole purpose is to
make money, and keep as much of it for themselves as possible. None of
there intent involves keeping anyone down. If we lived in a work where the
ceo's of the world would have more money by giving the stuff away they
would do it. If we lived in a world where by making sure everyone had a
job and everything they wanted would make ceo's richer they would make
sure that happened. But the fact is the world doesn't work that way. If I
try to make myself richer I am not trying to keep anyone down. I am trying
to take care of myself the best way I know how. whether it's lions beating
each other to the kill, or me having a better commercial then the next guy
to sell my product it's the same thing. It may sound cruel and hell it is,
but thats the way the world works I don't care weather you are a Lion,
tiger or Kim Thayil. By sg getting paid to do a concert for 400 doesn't
make them commercial. You want a general definition of a commercial?
Something manufactured to sell a product. None of sg's music was
manufactured to sell a product. Thereby it's not commercial. I want all of
you to remember your favorite sg concert, from say ltl or ultramega, or
bmf days. A&M didn't pay for it, it was paid for by you and promoters who
pays the promoters corporations, remember that we you think to your
favorite pre bhs sg experience. It's been the same the whole time. What
makes sg non commercial is that it isn't made to sell. They go out of
there way to exploit there music. Lets see here 400 people saw a free
show. Sg got paid 250,000 to do it thats say after lights susans cut
taxes. Rhodies, etc etc. Thats mabye 30,000 apiece. It seems to be from
the reactions of the people that went they were fairly satisfied. If thats
exploitation I want to be exploited everyday.

We have his address/name e-mail (therefore ISP who must have details) I am
sure someone that lives nearby (does anyone?) could contact him. I mean I
want to know what is going on before I give up all hope. Someone in the US
near where ever nothingman lives call the phone company and get his number.
Someone find out where is holiday is taking place please :)

nothingman contacted me today to tell me that shirts are...not
done. it seems to somehow be my fault -- the red text doesn't show up
brightly enough over the fork image, so i have to lighten the fork or
brighten the text to increase the contrast. of course, it's a *bit*
late to be telling me this, and at this point i would have taken a
shirt with "somms@mit.edu" scrawled on it in magic marker rather than
wait any longer...

so i'm sorry everyone, i'll redo the image asap and make it available
to nothingman and hopefully you can all find it in your hearts to
forgive me.
