Zero Chance...mmhh? that could be cool, but, another ballad? I mean, it is a

i don't know if i'd say 'commercial', i just think that maybe some of
their priorities have changed. *shrug*

geez, i forgot about the woodstock thing! this makes the whole molson
thing look slightly weird... doesn't it?

i just keep going back to that interview... request maybe? where chris
talked so proudly about how they are all on a budget and how he's middle
class and comfortable with it (or maybe it was working class even)... i
was thinking, that's great. here's someone with money and fame who
hasn't let it take over their life.

i STILL think t his was a joke... or that it was just mentioning what the
guys were wearing at the time. (yes, they might just wear clothes from
the gap!) i can't believe that they'd participate in this seriously
after Susan Silver's tirade in "hype!" about how she drew the line at
letting her clients participate in 'grunge' fashion spreads. what gives??

i'm going to disagree and say that i think they have some talent, but i
view aerosmith like Rock [tm] -- it is unbelievably commercial, and i
hated them in the 70's for that very reason. and no, i wouldn't be
surprised if aerosmith sued, mostly because i'm sure they've trademarked
the name too. in this case, i just think it's a matter of lawyers not
understanding the internet and i'm not sure that the store is totally
innocent here. (i know this is going back on what i originally said but
i've heard some information since then that makes me think the store is
not quite the victim they make themselves out to be.)

i'd add to that the show tonight. i really, really, really think this is
a publicity stunt -- one i'm quite happy to participate in. yes,
obviously if it's a bar they can't let people under 21 in, but there is
no shortage of excellent all-ages venues in seattle (e.g., dv8 or the
moore theatre).

oh well. time will tell. i'm just happy i don't have to go to
lollapalooza...

Subject: selling out? wait a sec...

why all the recent talk of 'Soundgarden' becoming synonymous
with 'sellout'? This sudden thread actually kinda bothers me...
not everyone's opinion, just the fact that it just popped up all
at once...

it seems that only a few weeks ago, when the excellent "Down
on the Upside" album was released, I recall seeing many posts
saying some things to the effect of, "wow, this album is way less
'commercial' than Superunknown", or "our old raw Soundgarden
is back", or "this album will discourage many bandwagon jumpers..."

but then, Soundgarden decided to play a show sponsored by
Molson... it seems that no sooner did this event hit ATN's
front page, than the word "sellout" begain flying around like
a bat out of hell...

well... if this is the worst gesture of commercialism that the band
has comitted, than I say that all is pretty well in Soundgardenland.
Hardly comparable to Spinal Tap producing a TV commercial to
endorse IBM...

to my knowledge (please correct me if I'm wrong here, I might be),
Soundgarden did not set the asking price for playing the Molson
show... from what I understand, Molson approached them and said,
"private show. $250,000. you guys in?". Hell, any band would be
crazy NOT to accept that kind of offer... plus, it's not like they got
on the damn stage and started playing Bon Jovi and Def Leppard
covers... they played SOUNDGARDEN music, the same stuff they'd
been writing and playing their whole careers... in addition to this,
at the show's conclusion, Chris Cornell thanked the wrong beer
company for sponsoring the show... and as one list member
pointed out a few days ago, this is NOT a good way to attract
commercial endorsements...

I still believe that, although the mainstream has warmed up to them,
Soundgarden is still one of the least accessible bands (musically)
in the spotlight today...

my $0.02... comments welcome.

this is hardly a comparison! spinal tap are NOT a real rock band, they
are a PARODY, they have always been a parody... which is why it was so
ludicrous for ibm to use them... (about as ludicrous as ibm's banner at
internet world: "when you think internet, think ibm" ya right.)

no, they didn't set the price, but no one twisted their arm to take the
money. they were made an offer and accepted it. by your reasoning, they
should have done woodstock, about the same money and a hell of a lot more
exposure -- far more beneficial to their careers than one secret beer
concert was!

i don't care about the concert as much as i do using sg music in
commercials. sync rights? big deal! do they need that kind of money
that badly?

the discussion on this list had nothing to do with atn, but rather, the
fact that jerm posted the information from atn. at lot of people on this
list then followed up with some very intelligent discussion and
questions. we are allowed to question this band -- they don't owe us
anything except to be true to themselves -- we do not have to follow them
like sheep. just because they're rock stars doesn't make them perfect.

I owe it ENTIRELY to this list. To show you the coolness of this list

I met Caryn on the list and we talk a lot (well, mostly me I guess).
She met Andrea (former list member due to job change) on line for the
SG tickets last Friday. Andrea said she probably had people to take,
but they weren't dying to go. Caryn says, "I know someone." They
exchange of numbers, days go by, lots of speculation and a whole lot of
crap on my part dealing with the scalper creeps. I get a message today
from Caryn to call Andrea. I call Andrea and, ta da, we make the
arrangements to meet on line around 5:30. How cool is that? Totally,
unfuckingbelieveable, but it is. I'M GOING!!!

I will try to work with Caryn, and others if they want to, on the set
list, etc. I have a feeling Caryn will be MUCH more qualified to do
so. I'm not that great at those types of things.

Loving life a lot more right now,

> But still...arent some of you concerned over SG's increased commercialism?

I really don't see their increased commercialism. Most of the reviews
I've read of DOTU have been negative, so it hasn't been as well
received my the media as you would expect a very commercial venture to
be. I don't see the guys as being money-hungry, or fame-hungry either.
This is their job and now they can finally do it full-time, which
means they do it for money. For years they had to just play music
part-time and work other jobs too. It really hasn't been that long for
them since they were struggling. We need to be realistic. Some day
they will have to stop and then what. Will Chris just go back to being
a chef? They need to pretty much make what they'll need now when they
can. But that doesn't make them greedy. I don't expect them to live in
squalor just to "keep the faith".

> Did CC's admission of being an alcoholic in the latest Spin bother anyone?

Actually he called himself "a drunk". To me that isn't admitting being
an alcoholic (more like being in denial actually), but yes it did
bother me. It bothered me because it sounded like he was unhappy and
drowning their sorrows in alcohol/drugs never seems very healthy for
rock stars, or anyone for that matter. Chris strikes me as someone who
could be pretty morose and drinking seems to suit him, but I truly
hope he isn't as bad as he makes it sound.

I don't think they've compromised their sound at all. The fact that
they produced this record tells me they are playing exactly what they
want, how they want. I know most of you don't agree with this, but
DOTU is my favorite SG album. I would hope that would be the "natural
progression of a rock band": that the fans will love each new venture
even more than the others.

No, I don't see our guys bowing to the corporate machine, except
perhaps to moon it.

Actually this has happened every time an album comes out since
Badmotorfinger. I don't think it happened before LTL, but I didn't
discover them until then so I don't know. I have very little in the
way of magazine/newspaper coverage before 1991 when they started
promoting BMF. But right before and right after BMF there was ALOT of
coverage, both in magazines and on MTV. The same with SuperUnknown.
Thats why every time an album comes out I think "This is the one
that'll make them really big", but then you know what, eventually it
dies down and they virtually disappear again. At least thats how its
been in the past. Its almost like THEY decide to cool it or something.
I've always seen it kind of like cold feet. But I've been typing some
old articles for Seth and in one Kerrang (Dec. 7, 1991) it says:
"It kind of varies, the buzz," sighs Chris, unfazed..."Sometimes
there are moments when it seems like there's this sort of storm cloud
of Soundgarden hype ready to burst and rain down on everyone, and then
other times it seems like we're still lost, we're still in the
background and not really necessarily accessible enough to any large
amount of people to get excited about us".
(So maybe its just the fickle press)

And the intro to the article ends with "...1992 will surely be the
year that Chris Cornell and Co make it enormous..."

It didn't happen then, lets see if it happens now. I just want them to
keep making music and keep touring. My biggest fear is that they'll
get tired of having to play arenas and just stop touring. I can see
them doing a "Beatles" and stop touring, but keep recording. I would
really miss seeing them live.

Anyway, the hype surrounding the release of a SG album is nothing new.

Sommsters,
This supposed new direction that sg is going is a little disturbing.
However I really don't think that dotu was an attempt to get more fans,
nor the same with superunk, why? Because neither album has rehashed
versions of the last albums hit singles. 2 PN did initially get decent
airplay on mtv, but I haven't seen it in 2 weeks. It's not even on the top
ten singles charts. If a band is hyped enough it can get on the singles
charts, but sg isn't being hyped all that much. 3 I don't see sg's contest
on MTV the email was sent to members of the fan club. We have to realize
that the average bastard conformist american isn't scrutinizing sg like we
are so our perspective is a little off. I never heard Kurt Loder say
anything about Ben Leaving the band, if it was Pearl Jam something would
have been said. The snl thing, They like Jim Carey it gets A&M off they're
back for not being all over the place promoting the album. I play dotu all
the time at work, and none of the frat guys or sorrority girls (members of
the bastions of comformity btw) start singing PN. I play radio head High
and Dry and everyone who comes in sings along. Is radio head a part of the
Main Stream? No is Sg not really? They are however shrewd business people,
they own all they're songs, even gave one away to the sub pop single of
the month club after they had signed with A&M on the Blind Dogs soundtrack
it doesn't even say courtesy of A&M. So do you think that sg gets paid as
much as there other acts hell no. If they want to make money let em' I
can't stand all this crap about money being evil, and you have to be poor
to be a good artist. If you were in the same situation you would do it
too. As long as the music doesn't suffer and they are not on beach MTV
thats fine with me. IF you see them endorsing Nike, and gatorade and
appearing on every talk show on earth, and on friends worry. When the
release BHS the album, worry untill then please shut up. What the hell
kind of commercial band reinvents there sound every 2 years almost making
themselves unrecognizable to anyone but there true fans. Think about this
everyone who got ltl when it first came out considers themselves true
fans. All 500,000 of you if a 1/3 of you buy a sg album when it first
comes out. That will be enough 9 times out of ten to make the album number
one. If all 500,000 told one friend about sg and that friend became a true
fan and so one and so forth. They can be number one for weeks. Think of
this Nana Mouskouri is niether mainstream or commercial yet she either
is in the top ten or has a lot of the records for records sold. In other
words you can sell alot of records and have a lot of fans and make money
w/o selling out. It's about the music, who cares if they decide to appear
on all the shows, if the music doesn't suffer please shut up and stop
    whining.

We the fan do not really know if they need money badly or if they are rolling
in it.Consider this,A band, any bad on a major label only makes $1.00 for
every CD sold for $16.00.If they move 500,000 units, then after the Label
takes their cut
and money is subtracted for the cost of freebies to radio stations and promos,
plus other cuts that I can't remember,Divided 4 ways each member only gets
$20,000
Now that $16.00 cd times 500,000= $8,000,000,that is a lot of expenses.I
think a bigger
band may make about $3.00 per unit.It is for this reason that a band must
look to other
avenues of revenue.Like Playing shows, merchandizing and
publishing,i.e.mechanical royalties and sync royalties and performance
royalties.And,in each of these other
sources of income is someone who takes a cut i.e.with publishing
royalties,there is
a publishing company who may take 25% to 50% of your royalties depending on
what kind of
publishing deal you negotiate.I don't think the band has sold out or gone
commercial as in doing it just to make money.A band can't ignore the
business side of music. The day that happens to this band,I'll just know it
in my heart.I won't need some magazine or
VJ to tell me.

Of course they didnt copyright it, one cannot copyright a word, phrase or
idea....but you can trademark "Soundgarden"...and I betcha that's the basis
of the suit....

I think Soundgarden has every right to protect their trademark...awhile back
I disagreed with Caryn regarding whether Soundgarden could act against Seth
or this list for using the term "Soundgarden," (but she's been right about
everything snce : ) ) since Seth and the List are not trying to make money
of our activities here.. (ok, except maybe Nothingman...). The record store,
as a commercial endevour, obviously is...hence, trademark violation.
Soundgarden has every legal right to protect their name. Now, from a moral
standpoint, the band should be a bit shamed, since they lifted the name from
a piece of art in Seattle, but legally that guy is probably fucked because he
did not trademark the name of his work....

If SG have changed their shirt company, they'll probably go with Backstage
Pass (at least in Canada). I order all the rock shirts for the store I work
at, and SG have been with the Giant/Brockum/Artimonde distributors. I'll
let the list know as soon as I see any new SG shirts available. As for old
SG shirts, they're really easy for me to order (there are about 15 designs
to choose from in one of the catalogues I have) so that guy should be able
to order ones from SU at least.

I'm sure this has been said before, but couldn't it just be a case
of the magazine taking a photo of the band, asking what they are wearing
and then using that as a caption? I can't imagine the band trying on and
discarding various articles of clothing, prancing about in front of the
camera at the behest of some cheesy photographer. and even if it was a "we

actually, by talking to him and looking through his catalogues,

I would generally agree with that last comment. their sound is unique still
dispite the deluge of copycat bands riding the alternative wave. To my
knowledge the closest thing to a SG copycat band that I've heard has been
'Mental hippie blood,' a european band none the less. SG's unusual time
sigs do weed out the less talented bands for sure but I still wonder with
all the PJ and Nirvana copy cats out there.

Their smart ass attitude also doesn't encourage commercial attention for

I think that for the year 1990 Soundgarden did try to pretend to be
metalmen... yes. They toured with Danzig & Voivoid. They did what looked
like metal videos - appeared on Headbanger's Ball (and continued to do so
until Superunknown's release). I'd whole-heartedly agree that they had no
other place to go in the music scene back then. Metal was big & that was the
closest thing to what they did.

Still Soundgarden doesn't really fit into a nice comfortable category which
is why I really am proud of being a fan. They're rock... they're the closest
band to Led Zeppelin that we have right now musically. But as I listen to
LtL (which I did twice over the last 2 days or so) I can't help but get a
totally different feel for the sound. It's a Soundgarden-sound but not what
I feel on the other records. The lyrics don't stand up to the depth from
anything from the last 3 records & aren't as consuming as Ultramega OK &
'some' of the Screaming Life stuff either (I'll ignore Fopp - with it's mere
one original track.) I'd have to say that some lyrics are great (No Wrong No
Right, Ugly Truth) but all in all I think that the Stone Temple Pilots have
written even better lines. /c: Also the album pics... the band shot were
Cornell is basically saying: "Axl Rose & I both steal clothes from our
grandma's closet.", um... glam rock was a bad time.

I'm not really trying to prove anything or make anyone think my way is right
or that metal is bad or that Cornell stole silk blouses from Granny
Cornell... I'm just voicing an opinion. Metal was a good platform for
Soundgarden I believe. They caught alot of those aging early metalfiends
that got tired of the crap some of those 1-dimensional 'artists' were doing &
bought them into a realm of better music. (not my story, but I hear this
story often)

Even if the band came out & said 'we aren't metal' doesn't mean that at one
time they made what sounded like metal. They weren't metal in personality
(girls, drugs, hairspray make-up) but metal in sound...

Metal's dead (and we get these offsprung bands like White Zombie, Pantera &
Metallica <who needs a name change>), so is punk (except for the pre-existing
acts like Bad Relgion & the Ramones who continue to impress). They died &
lead to what Soundgarden's been doing all along: metal riffing with hardcore
intensity... even some 80's 'indie' intelligence & personality. Hm.. I sorta
like the sound of that.

this may sound like a very kiss-ass gesture, but I truly believe
that the band is so unique that it would too difficult for another band to
copy wholesale their sound, or to even play the same type of music. they
do too many things and create too many different sounds (ty cobb, mind
riot, jesus christ pose), and that would make it difficult for some other
buttrockers with dollar signs in their eyes to copy soundgarden music.

another possible reason is that you would have to find a pretty
darn good group of musicians (who must also have no artistic integrity)
who can both write fantastic songs and play their instruments with a
fairly high level of skill all round to even vaguely compete with kim,
matt, chris and ben. lastly, since chris pretty much is the focal point of
the band, you must have a lead vocalist who can do the things he does.
can you think of anyone? eddie vedder you may be able to recreate, but not
chris.

every last detail about "My night with Soundgarden" here on this very list. I
know some of you are dying to know the "boxers or briefs" question. Oh, it
would be grand I tell you. Oh, and before they left, I would ask them to sign
everything SG in my posession.

Now, if Chris came to my door, demanding sex. That's a different story. I
would promptly send him to someone who would appreciate it, like Shroom. (you

Someone also asked how much would you pay to see SG at the Showbox. Umm, good
question. I would probably pay about the same ammount as I did to see the

that looks like an S and a G and a L7 and God knows what else)
underneath it in gold, red and black, and on the back of the shirt like
a picture of Soundgarden in black (on a white shirt btw) I bought it
and it's a cool shirt but the back picture faded really quickly, I don't
know if just my shirt is cheesed or every Soundgarden shirt that's like
this does that, so watch out. I want a DOTU shirt dammit =) And people

Did any of you check out MTV last night? I saw a different vid for pretty
nosse and I was wondering if that was the European one that some of you were
talking about, or perhaps an all new vid? Either way, I like this one much
more than the previous one, even though this one nothing but performance
footage....the other video just never rubbed me the right way....Any
comments?

I saw them together in Houston, TX in 1992. They played at the Unicorn (you
can see posters for the show on Seth's page in the images section.) The
line up for three of the shows on that tour (all in Texas) was SOUNDGARDEN,
Pearl Jam, Monster Magnet, and Swervedriver. During the Monster Magnet set,
Matt Cameron was standing in front of the sound board, watching the show.
After gathering some courage, I walked over and started talking to him. We
started talking about KISS because they had just played a club show in the
area nights before, and he said that they had seen Peter Criss play a club a
few nights earlier as well. We discussed a KISS reunion and laughed it off
as impossible. What the hell did we know? Wow, that was quite a
digression. You didn't ask for all that, did you? I'll leave you to your
life now.

Most soundgarden shirts are licensed to Brockum. I think the quality of their
shirts is less than average. They are made out of thin cotton, and are
generally quite smaller than what the tag reads.
And Blue Grape Merchandising (mostly metal bands) makes their shirts in almost
the same fashion. I guess this is why I don't buy too many concert shirts.

the best shirts i have gotten are the Pearl Jam "window pain" shirt and 2
Helmet shirts, "alien picture" and the "red sun/girl with a gun" shirt.

Comments, yes I saw the new video and it's ahhhh (trying to think of a nice
words here) old hat, very psychedelic...... Okay, the shots of the band aren't
bad... It's nice to look at them - eye candy is eye candy... But they don't
even look like they are really playing, a few close up shots on Kim's hands
doing a little guitar playing isn't to God awful - but over all they look flat
and bored.. And we won't even go into the light show - flash backs to
hootenanny days.

I have always preferred the videos with just band shots to the so called
concept type video, but in this case - pulling together a spare parts video
just to put something out, is just cheap publicity.. Sorry Frank, but your
name on the first "PN" was high praise, it is professional, well put together.
But this second one, is just an infommercial.... All I could think was their
record company didn't like the ratings so far for DOTU and wanted to push it in
the faces of the MTV crowd...

Okay, I'm just going to be the silkscreener here..
If it faded quickly, then it's probably not cured properly. To prevent it
all you have to do is find a silkscreening company and get them to run it
through their dryer (NO, not like a dryer for drying clothes after you
washed them, this is a dryer at like 400-500 degrees fahrenheit). If they
won't do it, then you're basically screwed... :)
Sorry.

Erin.

(oh yeah, you can't get it cured after it's already faded or washed, it has
to be before it's worn or anything).

Hi.

Okay, for those of you (well, I did too) who missed the whole t-shirt thing
with Nothingman, I know a silkscreening company here (in Canada) that would
do the shirts. It's an established company so I can guarantee that they'll
be ready as soon as possible and I won't "take the money and run". The cost
would be approximately $10 plus shipping and handling (that's $10 Canadian
so about $7.25 American plus S & S). The price is for a basic t-shirt plus
the silkscreening. That's a quote for 20-30 shirts. It'll be less if more
people buy. It can be the same design as before or a different one. It
doesn't really matter. If you're interested, e-mail me privately. I'll even
tell you the name of the company if you want to check up on them...
Hey, if I was going to use it as a get-rich-quick scheme, I think I'd use
something a little more expensive than $10...

Erin.

It kind of depends on the brand of shirt they're using. Most of the shirts
that I've bought have been really good because they're using a higher
quality of shirt. My advice is to not buy white shirts though because for
some reason the white shirts usually are really poorly made.
Blue Grape Merchandising is owned by Backstage Pass which generally has
good quality shirts.
I guess it's just buyer beware...

I would like to contribute to the praise of Matt Cameron and his three
(or is it more?) arms. I believe that Matt is one of the most talented and
versatile drummers to ever get on the set. Not many people could do what Matt
does without being yelled at by the others. Those of you who have ever played
in a band with a speed-freak drummer know what I'm talking about- the guy who
changes time sigs. w/o really meaning to. What I like best about SG's sound is
that it isn't dominated by one or two people. Everyone contributes to the band
and it sounds great. Matt keeps the song going through Kim's crazy, supersonic,
ear-splitting guitar riffs, Chris adds another 1000 dBs with his voice, and Ben
does what Ben sees fit (isn't that the case with most bass players?)
Those of you who want to hear more great drumming should check out The
Aquarium Rescue Unit. The album they did with Col. Bruce Hampton is pretty
good, but the one they did after that (In a Perfect World) kicks ass. Prepare
to be amazed. That's all from this loyal and faithful SG fan.

By the way, the first time I heard "Pretty Noose" I could have sworn that Chris
said " Eat the 'shroom and kiss the snake." Did anyone else hear that or am I
just doing too many drugs?

Subject: Overfloating alone....
From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

Okay better late than never - right.. I have been playing DOTU (amazing) to
and from work and each time one of you talked about a song ending I would fast
forward/backward to that cut and see if I agreed or not. Well today I decided
"Overfloater" has the best ending for me.. Although I must agree with all
the others members on their choices - damn hard on this record not to find good
in every cut...

But "Overfloater" has really got my vote as being the best on this record..
It starts out slow, moody, almost like being in a trance.. Then it move
forward, building with each chores.. If you set your bass just right there are
parts that you get Chris' voice and Matt's drums (my respect for Matt has
double because of this song). Turn the volume up and the vibration flow
through the car and into your soul.. Now I have a big mother of a Jeep and
getting it to move to music is not an easy thing... The song builds and then
slow just a bit, enough to catch your breath, then starts climbing again...
Right up to the part "I'm on the wire over and higher.....I'm overfloating
now...I'm overfloating alone" - Chris has reached up high to catch just the
right edge of pain. And then the ending comes almost with a sigh, a release
and you feel the rhythm of the drums and bass floating out of your body...
There's life.......and then it's gone...

The subject for this song just has to be life, not drugs or alcohol.. It's the
life line on the hand of life itself.. You can put your headphones on, put the
CD player on repeat, turn out the lights and "Overfloater" will make the empty
heart hear the beat of other who have been there.. The feeling of being alone
and forgotten will be shared with anyone who has loved and lost. Painful
tears will not flow because "Nothing's gonna pinch this nerve of mine"..

Mr. Cornell, thank you so very much for this song....

Someone was disappointed that they could not enter the contest to win
tickets to see
Soundgarden at some club in Seattle. That person said the reason was because you
have to be 21+ to enter. That made me wonder why,so I made a speculation as to
why that may be.I never said anything about all age shows.
Abby stated the Showbox is an only a 21+ venue. So,I assume that is where
soundgarden is playing. At the venue in Detroit called St. Andrews, they use
to have all ages shows but drinking was limited to the balcony. To go
upstairs ,one was required to show I.D.Last time I saw a show there It was
done the way you described it.
And I have been to shows where it is only 21+ to get in.So,you have been to
15-20 shows
I have been to 200-300 shows. what is your point? Are you saying I am not
allowed an opinion,I was merely speculating as to why the contest was
limited to 21+ only to enter. My point is that there may be reason to believe
the show is limited to those 21+ because alcohol will be served. If someone
knows the reason why the contest is for those
21+ and that information was posted then there would be no point in speculating.

holy fucking shit caryn!!! what did you think?? i dont want to post the
songlist etc. cuz i bet you have already beaten me to it and i dont think
everyone wants to read it twice.......

my opinions: chris' voice WAS FUCKIN UNBELIEVABLE!! i was worried after
SNL but he sounded incredible. he even pulled off pretty noose without a
hitch.

i was really nice to see ben when he wasnt pissed off. whenever i saw them
outside of seattle he was telling the crowd to fuck off and "go to hell"
he looked like he was having fun last night. maybe he's just mellowing
out...but he still was doing all the crazy theatrics with his arms and
shit, just pounding the bass so hard it was hard to believe he was even
aware of what notes he was playing!!!

i couldnt see matt too well, his beautiful zildijian ride cymbal was
blocking my view of his face but i could see his arms and what he was
playing. he blew me away as well. they are in top form!!!!!!!!

you guys will like boot camp. they have an extended jam BEFORE the "song"
actually starts, i was expecting them to extend it where it left off on
the album but it ended the exact same way. rhinosaurs ending was cool,
basically they just played the riff from the song over and over but
increasing the octave with each repitition.

Down on the (Very) Upside
Soundgarden at the Showbox
6/20/96

It all seems like a dream now. I stood on the fire escape at the office
this morning, coffee in hand, looking at the direction of the Showbox. A
little more than 12 hours ago I was inside, front and center, pressed
against the crash barrier and hanging on for dear life, sweat running down
my entire body and singing along at the top of my lungs. Soundgarden stood
less than 6 feet away. I'll never see them that close again=85.

3pm, 6/20 : I log off my computer, transfer the essentials to my pockets,
and leave the office. The Showbox is about 3 blocks away. Surprisingly, I
got a lot of work done. ;-) I'm anxious, I don't know what the line will b=
e
already, and I'm consoling myself that there can't be more than 20 people
there already and that still means a good spot for me. Wrong. There was N=
O
ONE there=85 some stray alterna-youth wandering by, but no line. I politel=
y
ask the security guards where I should sit/stand if I wished to get on line
and he pointed me to a spot in front of the doors and to the side. I sit
down and wait, feeling like a total idiot. I'm sure those guys thought I
was just pitiful, which irks me slightly, but I don't care. I consider
going back to the office for an hour or so, but it's not like I'd accomplis=
h
anything, and if a line materialized in my absence I'd kick myself forever.
So I sit, and wait.

A vaguely familiar figure dashes across First Avenue and runs into the
venue. Could it be? Nah. Too short, I think, but I'm still kicking mysel=
f
for not paying close enough attention. In the meantime, two guys have
arrived in front of the Showbox with cardboard signs reading, "DROVE FROM
PHOENIX, WILL DO ANYTHING FOR SOUNDGARDEN TICKETS". They aren't have a lot
of luck, and of course the security/venue staff/band crew are mostly
laughing sarcastically at them. Don't they get it?! If it wasn't for us,
they would all be out of a job. I chat with them briefly and tell th em I
overhead the crew saying that soundcheck would be at 7pm and that the back
entrance to the Showbox is in the alley behind the building, if they wanted
to try to catch the band going in.

Two woo girls* show up and start trying to chat up security by telling them
they're from Minneapolis. "Really? You drove out here just for the show?"
"Well, no, we were here on vacation=85" They are really stupid, to the poi=
nt
that when the aforementioned CC lookalike walks out to grab a smoke, one of
them walks right up to him and goes, "Can I shake your hand?" He shakes he=
r
hand. I'm not close enough to catch the whole conversation, but a few
seconds later he takes off his sunglasses and says, "No, he's much taller."
*snort* just from the cheekbones alone I knew it wasn't Chris. =20

I amuse myself by watching the unbelievably inept crew try to set up
barricades. It's really not that difficult, guys! It's 4pm already, and
*still* no line. Kinda incredible, if you ask me. I munch on my Power Bar
and wait for Chris to arrive. Around 4:30, Toni shows up and we chat. In
the meantime, someone on a killer touring bike pulls up in front of the
Showbox and since we're talking I don't get a close enough look, but I coul=
d
have *sworn* it was Matt. Not like I would have bothered him anyway, but I
wish I'd paid closer attention. =20

A few minutes later the security gives me the lame excuse that I'm blocking
traffic to the clothes store next door. Well, where can I wait? He shrugs
and points over to the side, so we move to where the line has been for ever=
y
other show I've been to at the Showbox. This would later prove to be a
mistake. Chris showed up around 5, and a few minutes later Toni went to ge=
t
on the will-call line. Andrea and Bonnie showed up at the exact same time.
I go run over to Pike Place Market to hit the bathroom and grab some readin=
g
material..

A little after 6, Mr. Security Guard comes over to our line and goes,
"Everyone over here is will call, right?" Um, no, idiot, you told us to go
over here. There's already a healthy line of ticketholders on the other
side, and there is NO WAY in HELL I am getting at the end of it. I argue
with the guys watching that line =96 they shrug. I go up to Mr. Inept
Security Guard and go, you know I've been here since 3pm, you told us to go
over here, this is NOT fair. By some miracle he tells the other guards to
let us in the front. The people on the line grumble, and this is hardly
gathering us good will, but I do NOT care. Lots of people milling about
looking for tickets, lots of scalpers too. The line begins to wrap around
the block. Someone walks by with two dogs on a leash and none of us paid
attention until they walked back out =96 Bonnie leans over and pets the dog=
s.
We're whispering amongst ourselves as to whether or not they're Chris' when
the owner walks by =96 none other than Ms. Susan Silver. Looking much thin=
ner
than she did in "Hype!". Dogs were cute. =20

Finally, finally, around 8pm they let us in. First, ID check. Then, metal
detector. I've got the camera shoved down my jeans and I'm praying it
doesn't set off the metal detector. Home free! Then, a body search. She
looks at my biker wallet and says, "No chains". Fine, I say, ripping
everything out of it and throwing it aside. She goes, you won't get this
back. I'm like, um, do I have any other choice in the matter? Like I'm
going to go to the car and get on the end of the line??! We're still the
first ones in and I walk straight up the stairs, glance at the tshirts, and
open the doors to the showroom. If they aren't ready for us, they'll tell
us to leave. I walk straight for the front and the center. Andrea and Ton=
i
go for chairs, Bonnie decides to join us down front after some deliberation=
.
I make a quick run to the bathroom and then to buy shirts =96 Toni offers t=
o
hold them for us through the show.

Okay=85 enough preface. Chris and Bonnie and I are right in front, slightl=
y
off to Ben's side. By the end of the show we were RIGHT in front of Chris.
The stage is ready, someone comes on to announce them, the lights go off an=
d
I swear my heart just stopped. Beautiful blue light, Chris with his hair
standing on end, Kim, Matt hiding behidn the drums, Ben right in front. We

Next was "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" and I am just SOOOOOOO psyched=

"Pretty Noose" was wonderful and I had no doubts that Chris could hit those
notes to night and he did. It and "Never The Machine" were kind of a blur=
=85
until they went into "Ty Cobb". I think Chris took his guitar off for that
one =85 or maybe for "NTMF"=85 not sure. But he REALLY got into it, out on=
 the
edge of the stage, giving us all the finger, trying to get us to sing the
chorus along with him. Serious audience eye contact=85 I know I caught his
eye twice, don't expect me to tell you WHEN it was! (I know Ben saw me onc=
e
or twice too=85) "Fell On Black Days" was next and Chris was really into t=
his
one, closing his eyes and squeezing the words out. They fucked up towards
the end and Chris cracked up, smirking at Kim. It was the best moment so
far=85 I didn't recognize the next song at all, I mean, a total blank, it
sounded familiar and I saw later it was a last-minute handwritten addition
to the setlist. I was kinda grateful for a slow and unknown one right abou=
t
now so I could reposition myself and catch my breath. The crowd was okay,
except for ONE guy who thought he owned the entire place and even made some
comment to me later about not deserving to be down front if I didn't smile.
Excuse me, asshole, I WAS smiling, if you took your elbow out of my ear I'd
smile more, maybe=85

"4th of July" seemed to lose pace a little, but they picked it back up with
"Spoonman". Lots of smiles from Ben, the occasional interchange between
Chris and Kim. I'm trying to watch Matt play but it's hard, it's really
hard, I have to remind myself. "Black Hole Sun" was next, just Chris on
guitar =96 Matt broke one of his snares and he collapses on the floor behin=
d
the kit while his roadie (who is the CC lookalike from earlier today)
replaces it. Chris is clearly bored, it's not working, he doesn't like
doing it, it's my least favorite song too, and as soon as he got to the end
and saw that Matt was back in action he just tore of the guitar and they
careened into "Outshined", Chris slamming the mic stand to the floor and
stamping his feet, probably th e most intense moment of the evening and my
personal favorite. Huge singalong time in the crowd too.

I loved "Rhinosaur" live, same with "Never Named", aw, hell, what am I
saying, I loved all the new stuff live and would have KILLED to hear more!
"Blow Up The Outside World" was great too. Who am I kidding??? They ran
off stage but we knew they'd be back because we saw it on the set list
earlier=85 with "Boot Camp"!!! which started with this long extended
wicked-sounding jam session, I would KILL for a copy of this version, then
they slid into the song and if you love this song, you are in for a TREAT
live, I just wish I could have concentrated more and not been worried about
fighting assholes off from every direction. And finally, "No Attention", I
pull the camera out and start snapping away. I figured security would
ignore me by now and they did! More screams, more Ben antics, Matt=85 damn
that man is GOOD! Argh!! I could go a whole show just watching him! Song
ends, they wave goodbye, very heartfelt, and they're off.

There was some between songs patter, I have no idea when and where it
occurred, he mumbled something about his brother being there and also
something about the last time they played Seattle, at Memorial Stadium, and
how it made him feel like he was at a high school football game=85 Maybe
someone like Toni or Andrea who were further back can fill that stuff out.

The third-best moment in the evening occurred as they were striking the
equipment=85 I catch the drum roadie's eye and ask for a setlist. He shake=
s
his head. Damn, I think. Chris' guitar roadie comes out and gives a set
list to someone else, and throws a pick out into the crowd=85 then a
free-for-all ensues and I figure I'm not gonna get a damn thing and I'm
tired of fighting already. All of a sudden, the drum roadie leaps off the
drum riser with a stick in hand, across the stage, down into the security
pit and hands it *straight* to me!!!! All I can think is that he remembere=
d
me from earlier that day, and I was the only girl down front fighting for
something. Oh man. I think I thanked him but certainly not enough, I was
more worried about getting out of the mob with the stick intact. I walked
away with Bonnie =96 Chris was still at the barrier fighting for a setlist.
and through sheer willpower and the ability to outwait anyone, got one.
(Good thing too, because I never would have remembered all the songs in
order=85 of course 5 minutes later I go to Toni and Andrea, "Hey, did eithe=
r
of you get the setlist?" Doh!)

Went outside, smoked a cigarette, took a group SOMMS picture (sorry we
missed you, Todd!) and basked in the total high we were all in. Chris and =
I
decided to try to wait to see if the band would walk out =96 Matt's bike wa=
s
still parked out back =96 but it didn't take long for me to get very cold
(since I was totally drenched) and it was much later than we thought anyway=
.
Besides, I think everything that happened was quite enough already, thank
you=85 though I was joking with Chris that I'd go up to Matt and say, 'Hey,
Shroom says hi!" (Actually, I would have told him the list says hi, but
never mind.) Chris came up with his own hilarious idea for a list shirt,
but I'll let him post about that later=85.

Oh, a woo girl, for those of you who don't know, are those stupid bimbos in
bikini tops who get on top of their boyfriend's shoulders at concerts and
yell "Woo!".

if the set you see is HALF as good as the one we saw last night, trust
me, you will not walk away thinking that it sucks. they have a lot of
albums now, you can't expect them to be playing old material from years
ago that they might not have any interest in. bands grow and change, the
kind of material they enjoy playing grows and changes too.

btw, "JCP" was on the setlist but they crossed it out for some reason --
the only 'disappointment' i had. (and i say 'disappointment' in
quotation marks because i would be foolish to be disappointed in last
nights' show)...

just my $.02. if you love this band, give them the benefit of the doubt...

i just peeked on the korn mailing list and it seems theres a lil bit of
discussion on DOTU :) a couple of people were commenting on how much
the new album and then there was some less glorifying shit like "the new
soundgarden album blows dead goats" and someone else mentioned how they
worked at a used record store and the store bought back 9 copies of dotu
in one day.. oh well... it just kinda unnerved me =) is there anyone
besides the list and the beer companies that actually LIKE the album?
it's even getting shitty reviews everywhere. <sigh>

Thank you very much Caryn for your detailed and informative review. How I
wish I could have been there with you guys. I would have loved to have seen
SG do a set like that. I've never heard 4th of july live and SG doing
waiting for the sun...I love it when they pull out classic songs and
re-interpret them into a SG feel.

Thanks again,

Hi,

Does anyone remember those 2 outshined videos? I just got those compilation
videos from PJ Starr, and it has both of them on there. I never really saw
the first one. But when I was watching it, it looked exactly the same as the
MTV one but all it was missing was the sand and the guy in the giant hamster
wheel. So my question is, was the first one a European thing? Or did they
just think it was trash and did the whole thing over again?

From: COCHRAN_BONNIE/SBCTC@ctc.ctc.edu
Subject: SG @ the Showbox: The High Continues!! (quite rambling & lo

What an incredibly awesome night! I'll never be able to fully describe
how cool it was.

I met Caryn, her boyfriend Chris and Andrea on line at 5:30. Andrea
and I showed up the same time as I was telling Caryn, "It's me,
Bonnie." Too cool. Of course, Caryn was first in line to hold our
places. The security guys running the shit out outside did not have it
together. We were waiting in one line, for ticket holders, and the
other was supposed to be for will call. Well, it ended up half and
half so they switched lines, but at least they did let us take our
rightful places in front.

One highlight is Susan squished past us in line with the two
Pomeranians (I fucking forgot their names too!). She does not look
like any pictures I have seen of her, so at first wasn't really sure
who she was. I definitely knew the dogs though. She was inside for a
while and when she came out, they let the dogs pee on the building and
I kneeled down and petted one dog. She was talking to someone and when
they excused themselves to come back through I bent down and petted the
other one. Caryn's Chris said, "That is Susan." I TOUCHED THE DOGS
THAT CHRIS TOUCHES ALL THE TIME, AND PROBABLY SLEEPS WITH THEM! I was
doing if for Shroom and then I realized that it was my hand and got all
excited!! Whew!!

Okay, so then they let us in about 8:00 p.m. and I am trying to decide:
stand right up front and possibly die, or sit in a chair at a safe
distance. I rushed to the bathroom and then tell Andrea I'm gonna go
for the front for as long as I can. There's no way in hell I was gonna
pass up that chance to be that close and possibly make it the whole
show, no fucking way!!! So Chris, Caryn and I make our united front
right there man! Oh yeah, Toni (tonerkins) was there. TOO cool! We
hugged and were just hyped. I was shaking because I was really there,
inside waiting for them to come on and looking at the mic stand and
realizing I would be watching Chris sing so close, and the rest of the
guys. Adrenaline! Toni opted for a table, but ended up being on the
edge of the stairs that led to the table area. Just couldn't help herself!

The first band came on at 9:00 or so, Devilhead. Not too impressive,
but I would really have hated to be that band. Opening for Soundgarden
in the Showbox. First show in Seattle for almost two years. 800
people capacity. Oh well, I was polite and I actually thought a couple
songs were okay, maybe better if the lead singer didn't look like he
had an attitude, "Fuck it, they don't give a shit anyway, so why should
we try that hard." They did have another guy come on and sing and I
thought he was pretty good and that jazzed up their enthusiasm some.
I'd like to find out who he was.

They set up for SG. Then off go the lights and the guy comes out and
says something like, "Playing tonight in Seattle for the first time
since August 1994, Soundgarden!" ( i was at that last show too)
Massive surging.

They were so good. We were just what, 10 feet away? I'm *real* bad
with distance, so I don't really know, but it was SOO close, which I
hadn't done at a SG concert before. I held my own at that barricade
through their entire show and encore. Caryn went off on some guy
trying to weasel in around me and then he was hanging over my head and
using it as a rest. I punched his arm up in the air and the bouncer
told him to quit it. Caryn is so cool, she just got down on him!

The songs, the sound, the singing. Everything about last night was
just incredible. I tried to remember what they played. You may have
already gotten a post from Caryn on it. Because, after the show was
over we were still right up there and Caryn and Chris were trying to
get set lists and whatever they could. Caryn was asking one guy (looks
like CC) for the list or whatever, while he's messing with Matt's
drums, he picks up a drumstick and comes all the way over and hands it
*specifically* to Caryn. That was awesome. It's got the SG name on it
and is beat to shit.

Oh yeah, and while they're playing, one guy who shoved his way in next
to me is asking Ben if he can have a drink of his water. So Ben picks
it up and walks to edge of stage and hands it to him!! So, of course,
I gotta get me some just so I can say, "I drank out of Ben's water
bottle." Which I did!!! I *think* Caryn and Chris did too. I believe
the guy handed it back, but I can't be positive.

Like I say, the whole experience was too awesome for words. Totally
worth anything I went through. You should see my arms man. They are
SO bruised and everyone at work is just amazed (shocked?) at me. Okay,
so out of 50 people in my office, 6 know who they are, or have heard of
them. Just two of us are fans, me being more fanatic of the two. Ted
and me. Not many people who can really understand it. I went running
down to Ted's office earlier to tell him, of course about the show, and
that I had heard the Green Apple Quick Step and Inflatable Soule and
someone else are playing the Capitol Theater here in Olympia tonight.
IS are also playing tomorrow night at the Fenix in Pioneer Square.
Andrea is going and last night I said I would too, but now with them
playing tonight just three blocks from my office, I've got another
goddamn choice to make! (oops, I digress)

Shroom, you would have loved it. But you had five of us sommsters
thinking about you, so you were there in spirit! I reached out to get
as close as I could to Chris, god he's gorgeous! All in black and
looking excellent. He even pulled up his shirt a few times and Caryn
and I looked at each other, "Yeah!" We also had my husband take a
picture of us. I look totally moshed and was soaking wet! Won't be my
best photo, I know, but I couldn't have been much happier than that!!
I can't wait to see the pics Caryn took. If they turn out, they will
be really good ones, up close like that.

I'm sure you've heard from Caryn, she's awesome man. I really like her
and appreciate how she helped me through the extremely difficult days I
had from Friday to yesterday on my ticket search. Her and Andrea.
Yes, life can be oh so sweet!!

Some more cool shit about the SG crew, or *whoever*. I'm not real sure
who was responsible. Two guys had signs saying they had driven from
Phoenix for the show and needed tickets. They were there when I got
there and I gave them the numbers of one scalper, depending on how much
they were willing to spend. Told 'em good luck, and hoped they'd find
something. Saw them out front after the show, when Caryn, Andrea and I
were having our, "After show cigarette." They had someone ask them if
they really drove up from Phoenix, and they said yeah man, just
finished our finals and headed straight here. They both were given
FREE passes. Isn't that cool? It is still out there.

I hadn't eaten all day. That could explain while I felt like I might
pass out a couple times. I would NOT let myself be pulled off from the
front, no way in hell. The security guy who was in front of me the
whole night kept asking if I was okay and stuff. I'd either give him a
big grin (LOVING it) or the okay or thumbs up sign. He better have
been impressed! I'm short man, barely 5'2" and not skinny at 115, but
still. And I held my fucking own (yes, with Caryn's help) against the
surging, bashing crowd. God, when some songs started the whole floor
just jumped up and down. Yeah, and Chris actually threw his water on
us! It was cold and felt great and Chris threw it on me!! I tried to
make eye contact with all of them and smile and shit. Ben was right
there and Kim looked over a few times. And yes Chris too.

I know I got more to say. They had a couple fumble things, but THEY
WERE SO FUCKING GREAT! Ty Cobb Chris jumping around hitting his head a
flipping the crowd off, Rhinosaur, everything. Like I said, Caryn's
got the set list and will really be able to describe the music in more
detail (and the evening in less profane and excitable terms).

Okay, I got home at 3 a.m. this morning and was up at 5:30 a.m. I
haven't done a whole hell of a lot here at work, but I'm here and was
even a little early!

Thanks for letting me share my joy.

Bonnie
