UltraMegaUnknown had songs that were more riff based, and the songs were
not developed enough. The writers did not spent enough time to make the parts
stronger.
With Louder then Love, the band moved to a more cohesive writing style.
Kim especially, expanded his repetoire of technique.I look a this album as the
harmonics, feedback, percusive album. On many of the songs you can hear all
types of harmonics being used as ideas.I can think of the names of all the
tracks.
Some are Gun,Uncovered, and No Wrong ,No Right,Loud Love.

This denotes that the track was mixed by Mike Beinhorn @ Electric Lady in NY
as opposed to mixed by Brendan O'Brien @ Bad Animals as the reminder of the
album was. Also the * is by She Likes Surprises on the non-US / Canadian
release because of a similar reason. Check the last page of the linear notes

Sommites,
I have one small comment on Matt's Drumming Prowess. Just listen to say
hello to heaven. At first glance (in an audio sense) it sounds like a
really simple 4/4 arrangement, to the tune of snare on the 1, 2, (snare)
3, 4( Bass Pedal) Basically like the drummer is tapping out 4ths on the
High Hat, and on the 2 he hits the snare (I think thats what it's called,
I never took lessons just play by ear) and on the 4 he hits the bass
pedal. However if you listen really close you will find that Matt is
subtly changing the pattern within that aforementioned structure yes he is
indeed playing how I just said, but he is also doing several other things
with the extra appendages I know he has but he hides somewhere. Thereby
giving the song a very intricate structure that fits and almost hides in
the arrangement. I hope that sounded right, I never took drumming lessons,
I just listen very close and try to imitate what I am hearing. Btw can
anyone on the list play the drums to Cold Bitch?

After the New HOOTIE! video (or was it some cheap R&B thing..dunno) I just
saw a SECOND VERSION of "Pretty Noose". The credits say it was directed by
Frank Kozik. Is this a typo? Is this the European Version? Is this a NEW

Hofner (sp) bass. The same kind that Paul McCartney played. ;-) Maybe
that's where the Beatles sound comes from ;-)

several people who are big SG fans who name LtL as their favorite album!
Just to get on the record, I like LtL a lot. I think it's better than Ultra
because I know I skip many more songs on Ultra than I do on Louder.

I'd like to end this post with a question...In switch opens, the last
chorus' lyrics are incorrect on the lyric booklet. It's in the last chorus,
the third line. Can anyone figure out what Chris is saying?

I agree that a&m may have been trying to promote soundgarden as a
metal act in the early 90s, but I think it was more a case of the
recording company understanding that there are no 'soundgarden' categories
in either the record stores or the during the music award nights. we all
agree (hopefully) that soundgarden are something more than just plain ol'
rock and have a fairly singular sound, so what else could they do?
'alternative' music was yet to become the 'next big thing', and so trying
to market the band would have been a difficult task.

as for the rest of your post ray, it seems to me that you are
arguing that the band made a conscious decision to *become* a metal act,
primarily by recording louder than love <imagining chris sidling up to
kim: 'do you know any winger stuff, man?'>. do you really believe that?
that the band would actually write songs and create an image that fitted
neatly into the company's category? I think soundgarden have more
integrity (and sense) than that.

> All in all... Soundgarden booted all sense of a PRODUCER & did THEIR

lately? I

I agree (in some respects) that dotu is better for not having an
outside producer meddling around in the booth. but don't dump on terry
date for the sounds on louder than love (which was also co-produced by the
band themselves and, importantly, jack endino). it was the pairing of date
and soundgarden which produced the list-renowned badmotorfinger :) as for
date himself, I think he produces albums for white zombie and pantera, but
I'm not sure.

Subject: and I don't like what you've got me hanging from...

just a couple of minor things.

first off, for all the listers who feel that soundgarden have, at
some time in their career, sold-out musically (ie. showing their buttrock
butts to the music world at large): chris cornell on selling out - "music
driven by money deserves to fail". kim thayil on same - "obviously we're
not gonna come out with all the metal cliches that have been put on the
radio for the past eight years. if we were going to patronise the audience
that likes that stuff, we might as well be another bon jovi or
cinderella...we did this not for the usual rewards -- girls on our
shoulders. we just like writing songs and playing".

I think the last line of the missing burden lyrics is 'and all the
little pigs have gone', but that is just my ears and not an autoprompt.
too bad they didn't do overfloater on snl, so we could get the missing
verse to it also :)

still on overfloater - does anyone really think that chris is
singing 'wanna make it right' in the bridge of overfloater? I've listened
to it dozens of times, and I'm almost positive that he is singing 'won't
make it right'. I could be way off base though, because that would change
the entire tone of the song.

lastly, a journalist in a newspaper here in australia said in an
article on soundgarden that in the movie dead man walking, sean penn
modelled himself after chris' wolfboy/goatee look. has anyone else heard
this, because I'm wondering if she just made it up to fill space. sounds
kinda dumb to me.

Yes, fellow Sommsters, it's finally official. Lollapalooza will be making a
stop at the Gorge *ugh* on the 30th of July. The show starts at 2 in the
afternoon. Tickets go on sale Saturday at 9:30am and are $41.50 plus the all
too wonderful service charge.

I have several problems with this. (1) I absolutely HATE the Gorge. It's so
coorporate now, not to mention a pain in the ass. It takes about 4 hours to
get there, it's as hot as hell (maybe hotter), and it takes FOREVER to get
out of the parking lot and home again. A case in point, last year, I went to
Live there, and I didn't get home until 5 in the morning. (2) It's on a
Tuesday at 2:00pm. What were they thinking? Who in the fuck decided this? In
reality, those who have jobs will have to miss 2 days of work. That is unless
you go to work without sleeping. Not to mention that it starts just when the
tempurature should be rising into the 90's. I say that the W. Washington
concert goer should demand a larger venue that is suited to hold the large
capacity crowds that these type of festivals draw on the west side of the
mountains.

Sorry for going off there. Was that considered a worthwhile post? ;)

regards to EV beeing totally depressing and how he should get over it
etc...

The thing that I really dig about Vedder's lyrical style is the
fact that no matter how you're feeling, he seems always to have
written a song that encapsulates exactly what you are experiencing.
Whether you've cut loose from a violent relationship (Rearviewmirror), or
confronted with some brown nosing shitsucker (Satan's Bed) or just
feeling a little bittersweet about the one you love (Indifference). It
just seems that CC can't really do that for me. Also, although I respect
Cornell's singing ability _FAR_ more than Vedder's (even just for the
range alone) I believe Ed is way easier to listen to due to CC kinda
blowing yer skull out.

Either way, the two of them still kick ass. Is why "Hunger

Subject: In Soundgarden's defense......

OK, let's start with the easy part.

To Steve Koca: I believe the second version of the Pretty Noose video you
mentioned seeing on MTV comes from a short film shot by the band as an A&M
promo - " Kaiser Kellar's Cellar". I haven't seen it aired on MTV, but it
sounds like it's one and the same. The promo version has Chris in a white
t-shirt and black jacket, they're playing in what appears to be a television
studio, and it's introduced by a bald guy with a German accent? If it's the
one, I can't believe they're playing it on MTV!! I must admit I like this
version better (sorry Frank). There's a funny part - don't know if it's
intentional - where Chris screws up the lip-synching in the first verse.

As far as Louder Than Love goes........true it's not THAT great of an album,
but it's not really the band's fault. From 'New Metal Crown' -
<Unfortunately they (SG) hadn't reckoned with the staff who mixed the record.
Somewhere along the line, what might have been a perfectly good Soundgarden
metal album had had most of its musical quirks ironed out and flattened.
What emerged in its place was something far more hollow and lacking much of
its personality. As Chris Cornell angrily explained, "We've had problems on
the mixing where the guys underneath Terry (Date) were involved. The guys
who mixed Terry's records....they come in after everything's been recorded
and you've never met them before...they're coming in with their own
philosophy of doing things, as opposed to coming in with a philosophy that
you're mixing a band that's already mad a record." Maybe it really gave
Soundgarden a better shot at the brass ring. Maybe it was the right thing to
do for such an important step in their career. What was immediately obvious
was that this wasn't quite Soundgarden. The intelligence and humor were
still intact, but were hidden away under a dusty musical cloud that only
seemed to exaggerate their influences and smother the individuality. Maybe
someone thought that was what the public wanted. But it did the band no real
favor.> end

That explains a little. Also, my first real exposure to Soundgarden came
from this album. I went out and bought it after seeing an interview with
Soundgarden (Jason was in the band at the time) on a Hard 'n' Heavy video
tape I bought back in 1989. I bought the tape because it had an interview
with the Cult in it, who I was really into at the time. So I see this band
who I had never seen before. The first thing that struck me was what a
gorgeous creature Chris was (so shoot me). But then they showed them live
playing Hands all Over, and then.....and this is where I got hooked...Beyond
the Wheel. I fell in love with that song. And Chris' vocals on that song
were just AMAZING to me, to say the least. Another thing that drew me in was
their incredibly goofy sense of humor. I just knew that I would LOVE this
band. I didn't know quite how long it would take, though. After viewing
this, I promptly went out and bought Louder than Love and Louder than Live.
I have to admit I was a little disappointed. I mean, I liked it OK, but I
didn't LOVE it, know what I mean? I just added the CD to my collection, and
went on with my life with The Cult. Until Outshined (so shoot me again).
Which brings me back to Terry Date. Why on earth, after what happened on
LTL, was Terry Date brought back to do Badmotorfinger? This I never
understood. Now I like BMF... love BMF, but is it just me who believes the
mixing is piss-poor on this??? What happened to the drums??? It sounds like
Matt's playing on the energizer bunny's drum set! This could have been a
GREAT album - all right, it IS great - how about SPECTACULAR album, if only
it were mixed right. I know it can't just be me. The band has probably
heard it too - Chris alludes to it on Headbangers Ball (3/94) where he says
something to the effect that after they finish a record, that's it, they're
happy, they're finished, they put it aside, and they try not to think about
'if only this instrument was played a little louder....'. Hmmmm. Makes you
wonder.

OH - Can't believe I didn't start out with this. Got my new issue of US
Magazine (Courteney Cox on the cover) and it's got an excellent (well, for US
Mag) article on SG, and good pictures too!! Although Chris' hair is all
frizzy...what's with this blowing it out straight shit?! It looked like hell
on SNL too. Anyway, guess how old Susan is. I always knew she had to be
older than Chris. She's 37.

Someone asked what the best Soundgarden song was - they said Tighter and
Tighter. For me it would defintely have to be Let Me Drown. As I've said
before, the definitive Soundgarden song.

I really need to vent on this SG goes Commercial thing we've got going, but
this is long enough. Suffice to say (FOR NOW) that this IS a BUSINESS, these
people have to make a living. What matters......and what sets SG apart, is
they actually give a shit. They care about their fans, unlike SOME OTHER
bands, who won't even play live, which we won't mention by name at this time
for fear of pissing anyone off. But this is a whole new rant, that I'll save
for tomorrow. (Bet you can hardly wait!)

To UnKnMan: Look forward to reading your thesis on
neurotransmitters.....(yawn).

Time for bed.....and I hope it's a sweet ride.

Not being a drummer (thankfully ;)), I may not be in a position
to judge, but you should check out Raymond Herrera (sp?) from Fear
Factory. It isn't too often that I'll notice the drumming (I listen for
the vocals 1st as a rule) but the skinwork on Demanufacture was just WAY
FUCKING AMAZING (in my honest opinion). It is _very_ quick, a little
creative and absolutely flawless except I think he might be a teensy
weensy tiny bit out on a kick in track 3 "zero signal".

But if you don't like thrash at all, you won't like the album so

Subject: Commercial Sounds emitting from the Garden

I'm glad someone else brought this up. I had been thinking the same thing.
Several recents occurences lead me to think, that yes, SG have become
commercial.

1) The Molson's concert. They were offered $200,000 to do Woodstock, and
turned it down because of the commercial implications. That was unacceptable
but taking money from a beer company isn't?

2) The "fashion layout" in Spin? If find it rather incredible that someone
like Ben who hates the way the press has latched on to "alternative" music,
and someone like Kim, one of the most cynical, skeptical people I know of,
would accept money from clothing stores to wear their clothes. (Please
forgive the run on sentence)

3) The lawsuit. SG's management is suing to stop The Sound Garden, a record
store, from using "soundgarden" as their domain name. If the band had
copyrighted the name, I could see it. But they didn't. The record store
registered that domain name some time ago, as far as I know. That seems
like something one of those bands who are only concerned about how much
money they can make would do. For example, I wouldn't be surprised if
say, Aerosmith did that. They are a band without any talent, who are in
it for women and money. But to see SG doing something like that is
disappointing, to say the least.

Subject: haha..Burden's lyric

On the album it sounds like Chris is singing "..and all the little pigs have
gone.." but then when they were on SNL (and I was watching WITHOUT closed
captions) it sounded like he says "..and all the little pigs have God".
Now either way, it still doesn't make much sense, to me anyways. Who the
hell are the pigs? Where did they go? Why the hell do they have God? I
dunno. SG is so cool that way. They leave u wondering.."wtf is this?"

And about my other post, about how SG are perfect the way they are. I got
alot of mail asking me "Well does that mean when Hiro was with them they
sucked?"
No that's not what I meant. I don't know, IMO (and I emphasize the M), I
like the band better with Ben. I never really liked UMOK or LtL. But that
doesn't make them bad. And it doesn't mean Hiro sucks either. I like the
band as is. And if ben ever leaves, I will be so sad :(

so Greg (seems like you got some heavy tastes there dude) would have to
like mellowing out. Reach Down is kinda heavy and Pushin Forward Back is
the meanest, but nothing compares to Call Me A Dog which along with
Silent Lucidity has to be one of the best soft rock songs EVER written.
Listen also for All Night Thing. It's different. It's also one of the
only songs I know to ever be played all the way through on a movie

Subject: Hi Dave & Commerciality

The ol' fingers are getting kinda numb today!! Okelly dokelly.
1st and foremost: Hi Dave. Welcome to the list. Savage post. Loved
it.

2ndmost: What's with all the concern about commerciality? Who
gives a flying fuck? From what I've read around here, there isn't
anybody on the list that dislikes DOTU. So, if they want to promote a
beer, fine. Mind you, I've heard about North American beer (say no more.)
If they want to play some small gig for publicity (huh?) so be it. If
they decide not to play in Tibet or whatever the fuck, can you blame
'em? This thread as one reader noted sounds remarkably similar to what
the Metalliheads have been saying and *gasp* Guns 'N' Roses fans before
that... Now you SG nuts wouldn't want to be compared to those kinds of
ppl would you?

* Note I happen to like both bands so back off :)*

OK. So the mainstream accepted S'Unknown more than BMF. So the
tunes on DOTU are a little more listener friendly than in the past. They
also sound more complete (except for Boot Camp which I'll get back to.)

Also, does there need to be a reason for this progression? How
about this for an explanation... The guys were sitting around and Kim
could have said
"Hey guys, check out this groovy riff"
And Matt might have said
"Totally radical... It sounds way nice"
And Chris said
"Oh... Do you fellows mind if I sing along?"
"I wanna play too!!!" said Ben
"OK" said Matt and Kim. "Let's all play together"

AND HEY FUCKING PRESTO THEY DID THEIR JOBS AS FUCKING MUSICIANS AND WROTE
SOME FUCKING MUSIC!

Nothing more. Just some tracks that they liked the sound of and wanted
to share with the public, whether it be for fun, fame or fortune, they
released them because they liked them. And you all like them too so quit
whinging about how they are getting "commercial". What the fuck does
commercial mean anyway

* well they are getting commercial actually...a beer commercial*

BUT THATS BESIDE THE POINT!!!!!!!!!

*Adrian reaches for the valium*

This thread always turns up when something a little obscure becomes a
little accepted. Like I said, GNR and Metallica fans have been doing it
for ages. Nirvana fans did too until Cobain pulled his greatest ever
career move and gave his stinking fans something else to whinge about.
Just accept it.

Lets face it. The whole piss take of culture/music etc was
topped off with U2's ZOOTV. (Speaking of big stages can anybody validate
a rumour: Queensryche to tour Oz with the stage-from-hell-that-is-like-
bigger-than-U2-and-Pink-Floyd-and-a-wicked-light-show-and-it-makes-the-
perfect-coffee (you know...the usual)) where was I? Oh yeah. Ummm shit
I've forgotten...too many nights playing with secret herbs and spices...

Anyhow, commerciality is a bandwagon thang. Enya attained some
status down here fer chrissakes. So if that bothers everyone (SG, not
Enya) don't worry, the fame will pass and they can fade back into obscurity.
At least that way everyone could sound really musically oriented and
knowledgable and untrendy all that conforming through nonconformity
bullshit that seems so popular and dare I say it trendy, for the simple
reason that we can chat about something that nobody knows about/cares for.

Until then, enjoy the music. It's what it's there for.

Oh yeah...the Boot Camp thang... In a recent interview, when one
caller mentioned Boot Camp ending too early, CC said that they might do a
longer version live *way kool*. However, and I'm going to ask a favour
of Shroom here: Shroomykins, next time your in the tub with Chris & co
suggest that they release an extended remix kinda like the old 12"
version *NO NOT CHRIS'S 12" VERSION* as maybe a B-side or sumfink.

	It's something to lobby for...

Regarding the pigs. Here's my thought, although it's slightly abstract and
nominally strange, I will share it with you. When you were a child, did your
mother, or someone else play, "This little piggy" with your toes? Like, "This
little piggy went to the market..." and so on? Well, mine did. And I can
picture Karen doing the same with Chris. She just seems all nice and like the
kind of person that would do so. That's where I think the pigs come from,
because at the end, all the pigs are gone, as they've all run off on some
errand.

YES YES MArk of Cain are great, tightest band in the world with a great
rhythm section. Great guys too, very approachable so ausie fans talk to them.
I got my Ill at ease CD signed and they were chatting with the fans for
quite a while, lucky i was near the front. They discussed set lists,
associations with Rollins, old songs, why battlesick wasn't on Ill at

Too Zepplinish!! nearly every rock band in existence has sounded like:
Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, or blues at some point. Zepplin
and the Beatles did a lot of different things so it would be stupid to
try and avoid any resembelence at all. Does your friend also hate
Badmotorfinger because its too similar too Black Sabbath? IMHO Soundgarden
takes the best bits from those great bands and moulds them into their own
sound, that is Soundgarden. Its not a ripoff there are just similar
sounds or moods but you can't say Soundgarden are Zepplin clones.

how odd...i take caryn's view on this one definitely.. I LOVE
pjam music, they're just totally survival songs and saved me hundreds of
times, to me SG may be more depressing, i mean with pjam i mean you get
something like "It's MY Blood!" and "Saw things so much clearer".. w/ SG,
even though it may be portrayed more hard core and screaming music wise
and pjam just a bit more mellow and drawn out, SG have lyrics like "I'm
the dirt beneath your feet" and "My eyes were waking up, just to fall

Hell you get metal detectors, we just get a pat down by the local security
mob :) Tho I have offten wondered why the femal security guards get the
longest line up :) This only got introduced when Peal Jam played down here
funnily enough. Wonder what the security for SG will be like.

Subject: Different Pretty Noose Videos

There is a "European" Pretty Noose video that was put together from pieces
of a 30 minute long
EPK (European Press Kit) made back in May.The European A&M Marketing people
did not think that
the "US" video (the one I did) did a good enough job of "Showing" the
band, and that it would confuse people.
Or maybe they just didn't like it...(for all the hype,European marketing
people are pretty conservative)
Hence the "4 guys jumping around playing their instruments version" I
imagine that A&M wants to get something new on the air,and that the 2nd
video is late due to the touring schedule,so they are dragging this EPK
thing out to get some more use out of it.

hey this is a good question, let's see. First off I don't belive in
scalpers, one guy I e-mail for a ticket to a concert had mosh pit tickets
and wanted $100 (there where $50 tickets to start with) So I said no.
Basically there is no way I am paying through the roof, the tickets are
expensive enough as is, and I don't feel like lining some slime's pocket
with my hard earned cash. I figure if ppl dodn't buy off the scaplers, they
would lay out all this cash for tickets and then would not be able to sell
any and go broke so sucked in to them. On the other had, tickets at the same
price as paid for, I have no worries about, shows at least some ppl care if
they can't go they'll let a fan get the tickets and go.

Just to contradict myself, in realty I would probably pay about $10 more,
only for a certain number of bands...if I knew I had no other choice. SG
would happen to be one of the bands :) But the prices most scapplers
charge..you got to be joking...no way in hell. $120 for a pearl jam ticket
that cost $34 hahahahahah I hope no one bought that, cause I saw it.

I personally would pay ALOT of money to get into that show... especially
if it was in my area (so there wouldn't be any other expenses). If SG were
playing Trees (my FAVORITE club in the world. SG played there in '89) I
think I'd probably spend up to, say... $400 for a ticket. I'm not joking.
And if the ticket was RIGHT in front of me... I'd probably go as high as
$500. So much for a 28.8 modem and new top for my car. <sigh> Obsessions
are expensive things to have, sometimes. But Trees only holds up to 800
people, so how could I turn down a show there?

Oh... and as to this whole "selling out" thing... look on the bright
side people: If someone won the lottery (say, ME)... well, if enough money
was offered, then SG would more than likely be willing to put on a private
show... right? Yeppers, that's what I'm sayin'. GO SHROOM!!! WIN THE
LOTTERY!! It's interesting, isn't it? Chris Cornell CAN be bought.
Unfortunately, not for the purpose I'D like most. Such is life...

1. If SG showed up at your door, and whanted to stay for the night, what

them sooo much that they would want to leave?

2. If Chris showed up at your door, alone, and says that he doesn't love his

don't want to know my answer :)

i'd run to the store and empty out the beer reserves and invite them to
go through my rare video & record collection while i was gone. then we'd
stay up all night & talk about music.

sometimes i wonder if shit like this is *only* for the sake of provoking

Have you got 'Dopes To Infinity'? That's the only MM album that I've
got (I'm pretty sure that none of the guys of the newie are on
Hater), so I'm really not sure what influence MM have on Matt and
Ben. I think that Matt is wearing a Monster Magnet sweat shirt in the
Motorvision video as well, so Soundgarden do have links with them.
They have a few similarities musically as well I think, for some
reason I tend to think that Soundgarden fans should like MM.

He does like BMF but not as much as Superunknown (his favourite by a
mile), I think that he considers BMF too much of a 'heavy metal'
album and is also put off by the fact that BMF is basically the most
popular SG album. When he first heard Pretty Noose he said it was
cool, then when it went to the top 20 in the charts he suddenly hated
it. As I said he is a weird dude!

Subject: LTL And Other Albums

I'm surprised to hear some people picking on Louder Than Love. I
think that it is the most underrated Soundgarden album of all, and
some of the songs on it classify as Soundgarden classics. Personally
I think it is hard to slag off at a Soundgarden album because they
are all so great in their own right. This is the reason why I haven't
submitted an order in preference of my favourite albums from
Soundgarden. Ranking one above the other or one below the other is
just too hard, I'll regret certain decisions for the rest of my life!

As for Soundgarden turning commercial ... bah! People have been
suggesting the sell-out of Soundgarden since Superunknown so what is
new. They've always been succesful (look at the amount of Grammy's
they're been nominated for (and won)), and saying that Pretty Noose
is commercial is strange. If it wasn't released as a single it
wouldn't be considered as commercial, the same can be said for Black
Hole Sun IMHO. And criticising them for playing in large arenas is
wrong because if they are doing the right thing by their fans they
should give every opportunity for their fans to see them. If they
played at a pub in Melbourne I would probably not be able to go because the
demand would just be too huge. On the other hand, if they play at the
Tennis Centre or somewhere similar, I am given a larger opportunity
to see them. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how big a fan you are,
it is still hard to get tickets : just look at the AFL grand final
for Australian members, and Victorian in particular.

Anyway, thanks for reading if you've stayed on this far.
