yes, that's exactly my point. i don't want to compare him to a jazz
drummer but that is partly it... they stood out because they fit so well,
yet they were technically unbelievable -- just didn't show it off in the
john bonham/keith moon style.

on the other hand, yesterday i was thinking about how much i'd love to
see sg do "communication breakdown" by led zeppelin, mostly because of
seeing matt's drumwork (and getting to hear kim interpret that solo!!!).

i know this isn't sg related, but yet another drummer whose work has
recently impressed me greatly is jimmy chamberlain of the smashing
pumpkins. i wasn't a big fan, but saw them in february and his drumming
just blew me away. again, not huge displays of how many drums can i hit
at once, just tasteful, creative work that fits the songs and integrates
well with the rest of the arrangement.

If you want a true indication of just how amazing Matt's drumming
really is, listen to a Soundgarden album and then listen to the
Tone Dogs album. It's hard to believe one person is that flexible
that he can handle such different types of music with apparent ease.

Agreed, hats off to Matt...

yeah, I caught that right away!! Nice touch... :)
I was also wondering if they were gonna go see SG...
right after you see him in the scene wearing the Superunknown shirt,
he gets in his car and sits for a few seconds before pulling away...
I was trying to figure out what song he was listening to on the radio...
if it was SG, it sounded like No Attention...

if they had the guy wearing the shirt, they could have at LEAST put
SG on the soundtrack... :)

Ty Cobb has a good ending... in fact I can't think of a better ending for
that song...
the nice shout caps it off perfectly...

my fave ending is still the end of Rusty Cage... the vocals build for a
couple
seconds ("I'm gonna break my rusty cage...), then echo off (and run...)
in a few short seconds you're dropped right into Outshined...
nothing technically spectacular, just great vocal effects...

Subject: One Man's Poison is Another Man's Food

When reading the list, I find it useful to keep this in mind: One man's
poison is another man's food. There will rarely be a message sent to the
list which everyone agrees with and thinks is worthwhile. What appeals to
one person may not appeal to someone else. Therefore, none of us (except
for Seth) can dictate what should be posted to the list. Keeping this in
mind, characterizing someone's posts as "bandwith wasting crapola" or
"utter crap" is rude, and wrong. Before you say something like this,
ask yourself how you would feel were someone to say the same about a message
you had sent. I don't want to sound bossy, or shrewish, but I'm confused
about why this isn't clear yet. So many people have said basically the same
thing-that we each have the right to contribute what we want to the list,
provided it is SG related. If you don't like something, that is your
right. But before you post calling something "shit", "crap" or anything
in the same vein, think how you would feel to see the same comments in
reference to what you'd written.
I enjoy all of the posts to this list. I don't play guitar, so the ones
about tabulatures are like Greek to me. I'm not in lust with Chris, so posts
about his sexy body dont' speak to my heart. But I'm glad to see both kinds
of posts just the same. They give me a picture of what various people on
the list are like. And because we have so many different types of posts, not
just ones on music, it shows us to be a very diverse group of people. I
think that's good thing. Can you imagine how dull the list would be if
we only talked about music? What would we do without Shroom's posts? Or
Caryn's? Or Nothingman's? We would not be nearly as interesting as we are.

All right,Let me know what you think,This discussion about thumbs started
because
of something Kim Thayil said in the Guitar Player June96 article. He rest his
double jointed thumb perpendicular to the fret board, right at the bottom of
the neck, pointing toward the head stock.with his thumb planted like that,he
can go much higher up on the neck.
Ouch, that sounds like that would hurt.

I'd have to go for mailman and tighter and tighter. mailman is
exceptional, with chris screaming 'yes I'm riding you' until the mic
almost overloads, and matt's drums having almost as much crunch as kim's

band, who toured with soundgarden here early in 1994. the guys from
soundgarden liked them so much that they asked you am I to support them
on their upcoming tour of america. did anyone in the states see them?
they were great as a support act here. so if you want to hear some
well-written songs, a fairly good voice and some australian accents
between songs, visit your nearest lollapalooza 2nd stage :)

anyhow, they are now releasing a new cd called hourly daily,
which is supposed to be a bit of a departure from their first album. I am
going to have to buy it next monday (when I buy the new screaming trees
cd _dust_). it would be going to far to say that if you like soundgarden
you will like you am I (can you spell ghoul?), because the two are widely
different. but they are a great band, and if you see any of their records
you should check them out.

returning to soundgaren content: look closely at the my wave
video, and you will see matt wearing a black you am I tshirt (while
crafting a magnificent roll, I might add) in a shot just before the
beginning of kim's backwards guitar melody.

for me, matt cameron makes soundgarden's music what it is. I know
there will be a fair amount of people muttering 'but what about chris'
voice, or kim's vocals, or ben's wayward spitting?', but without matt,
soundgarden's music would be greatly different. if he and his three arms
were not behind the kit, I'm sure that the songs chris, ben and kim write
would be a lot less interesting, both in terms of rhythm and structure.

for example, kim couldn't keep never the machine for his solo
record, because he wouldn't have been able to find another drummer capable
of playing it (not that kim would have written the drum track for that
song, but can you imagine the warrant drummer deliberating over *that*
one?) another example: if you listen to _spanaway_ by seaweed, matt comes
on for just one song, and *entirely* changes the tone of the band; the
vocals sound better, the guitars sound more alive, and the song itself
outpaces any of the other rather standard stuff on the rest of the record.

anyway, I seem to have strayed from the topic. drummers who could
perhaps match it with the tone dog himself? a recent post named jimmy
chamberlain, and I would have to agree. his fills are sometimes just as
interesting as matt's, and I'm sure that if billy wrote rusty cage, jimmy
could play it. also very worthy of mention are will calhoun of the now
defunct living colour (a master of the skins) and sean kinney (kind of
under-rated, but can handle his own share of timechanges). so I would have
to say that while matt is a damn fine drummer, he isn't exclusive in his
field. it's more a case of his drumming making soundgarden and their music
a far more exclusive listen (for those of us with a greater attention span
than your regular hootie listener).

I've read in a couple of different interviews that he actually LIKES Nine

On that Kiss tour thaang: I heard that Alice in Chains was officially slated
to open the first four shows, and then assorted other bands (no one major)
would take over opening duty.

I'm am a major speed demon...hell I spend half my life in my car. Ty Cobb is
definitely gonna be the death of me. I always have to check the speedometer
when that one comes on, because the "demon" takes over. But a really GREAT
song to jam to is Face Pollution. It just always reminds of cruising down
I-95 in Miami, at about 80 mph, all the windows down, the sunroof open, and
just kickin it. Aaaaahh.

BTW, I know we've probably already gone over this. But the missing lyrics to
Burden in My Hand...does it go:

Follow me into the desert, as deperate as you are
The moon is glued to a picture of heaven and ***********

What's that last part?

And finally, sleeping with Soundgarden. This may sound corny, but I fell
asleep to Tighter and Tighter. Honestly! Picture, if you will (this is a
true story) ME - are you picturing me? - OK. It was when Soundgarden was on
Rockline the first time (right before DOTU came out). I had my calendar
marked for this 'event' since I found out about it. I would be home for it
at all costs. So that night, I have a tape in the tape deck, ready to go. I
think the show started at 10:30. In the meantime, a thunderstorm....not just
any thunderstorm, a SEVERE thunderstorm, rolls through the area and knocks
the power out.....promptly at 10:29. NATRA-FUCKINGLY! To say that I was
EXTREMELY PISSED is an understatement. Luckily, I find this piece of shit
tape recorder in the garage, and it even had batteries! Whoa!!! Now we're
dealing. So I have the tape recorder on the coffee table, all the windows
open (it was very, very hot), and candles lit up all around the room. I'm
laying on the couch, sweltering, but mellow, and oh so content. Towards the
end of Rockline, they played Tighter and Tighter. I guess I was little TOO
relaxed. Or shall we say, the SONG was too relaxing. And hypnotic. It was
also the first time I had ever
heard it. I passed out cold. Next thing I know, I look up and it's 4:00 AM.
 Still no power.

So there you have it. And remember, a day without sunshine is
like.........night!

Subject: assorted ramblings

best ending to a song: i love the ending to holy water. especially how it
picks up momentum and keeps getting faster and faster, then when you thing
it's about to get even faster it just stops. while were on the topic of
endings i noticed that two songs on dotu have similar endings to other
songs. imo the ending of no attention reminds me of the ending of blind by
korn. also i know a lot of ppl are gonna disagree on this one, but the
ending of boot camp kinda reminds me of the ending of hurt by nine inch
nails.boot camp: 'far away..far away from here..and ill be here for
good...for good' and then feedback till the end.
hurt: 'if i could start again a million miles away i would keep myself..i
would find a way...' then feedback till the end. what do you ppl think?

chris' sexy body and the like: i myself, while do not share their views on
the topic, do find some of the posts to be comic relief, esp. some of
shroom's sigs at the end of posts. lighten up ppl, im sure that the
non-guitar playing ppl in the list like reading 20 posts about kim's thumb
as much as the ppl bitching enjoy reading about chris's body (me i enjoy both).

as one of the ppl who doesn't post that often and just kinda sits back and
reads everybody's posts i find reading my mssgs everyday and finding ppl who
are as equally obssesive with tiny SG details kinda comforting. as well, i
find the list a great place to get my SG questions answered. i wish that
everybody would just respect everybody's opinions and keep the bitching to a
minimum. if youre having a shitty day and feel like you MUST flame someone
who disagrees, please do it off the list, the only messages in the list that
truly do annoy me are the
insults and flames.

applebite and end of dotu: whoever said that this is a great song to fall
asleep to is totally correct. it seems like everytime i listen to DOTU
whenever applebite comes on i kinda get sucked in and my brain stops
working, the vibe on songs like tighter & tighter, switch opens, and
overfloater keeps me like this until an unkind comes on and 'we see the
vipers of distance' wakes me up and then boot camp has the same applebite
effect. dont ask me where nvtmf and no attention go where im listening on
headphones go..i always seem to forget them too on the headphones.

more and I have to say... it is really bad. Now i wasn't expecting much from
Jason Everman's band, but it was worse than I thought.
And Ben was a roadie for Nirvana (as has been established) and he was going
to join them but it Mark Arm and all those influental people told them not
to get a new guitarist after Everman. It would have been really weird
anyway, because I wonder if they would have let him write any songs, and if
he did how would they sound (i can't really picture it). And it also said
that he was in a band with Chad Channing called Tick-Dolly-Row, and that one
time he incited the audience at a concert to do the "worm" (where everybody
gets on the floor and tries to roll around and knock other people down).

Jackhammer,

In response to your question as to whether or not drummers would rise to the
occasion to play more diversified rhythmical music, I'm not sure. the
reason I'm really not sure is because if you look at music as a whole, you
see an awful lot of jazz drummers who are able to handle the syncopation and
odd time signatures without raising a sweat. I was taught to play by
listening to the more formal timings of rock and it is difficult for me to
comprehend the varying time signatures of most jazz and many SG tunes. On
the whole, I feel that playing your standard rock tune is much easier and
from my experience I would say that most rock trained drummers could not
easily make the switch. I know that I can't, I'm generally too used to
listening for that regular pulsing down beat. It's also not as if I haven't
tried. I'm sure that if I practised endlessly I could master the time
shifts but I notice that a lot of times I start getting frustrated when
listening to Matt and I begin to lose my ability to concentrate on the flow
of the song. I have to agree with you on the ending of rusty cage, it is
amazing. Especially his use of the crash cymbals.

ON another note, I think that I would have to agree with Heather's opinion
on the differences of opinions that are going around on the list. A little
toleration and flexibility go a long way. Maybe you won't enjoy the posts
from one person or another but I find that even the people's posts whom I do
not enjoy as a whole, still contain gems from time to time. One thing that
I am sick of seeing is flaming. If you feel you have to do that, be mature
enough about it to keep it off the list and send it privately.

Subject: Sonics or Soundgarden? A choice I had to make. & Re:Are You Serious?

Dateline Friday, June 14th, 1996.

Okay, I go down to the Key Arena to see if I could scrounge up a ticket for
the Sonics game later on that evening. After haggling over a price with some
unscroupulous individual, I risked arrest and prosecution and purchased a
ticket that was marked up well over 750%. So, after some more errands, I
finally get home just in time to clean up, check my mail, and get my ass out
the door. Well, I found out that tickets for Soungarden were going on sale in
about 45 minutes, the exact amount of time it takes for me to get down town.
Now, do I risk missing part or most of the game to get the Soungarden
tickets, or just go to the game? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! A choice I wouldn't wish
on my worst enemy. After much turmoil, I ended up going to the game, and
didn't go for the SG tickets. :( After what I spent on them, I had to go,
I couldn't afford not to go. :( Flame me if you must, but be gentle.
  :::::holds head down in shame::::

Now, in regards to the ideal that posts not containing all or mostly musical
content are not worthwhile. I say, "No, that's where you are wrong." There is
nothing wrong with someone sharing their thoughts or comments about a common
interest. There are many different people on this planet and on this list,
and not all of them have the same viewpoints. Thank God! Life would be
mind-nummingly boring if that were the case. If what you want is hordes of
drones with no individuality, then find another planet, because the one we
live on isn't that way. And, this list is a healthy way of expressing ones
ideas, desires, and thoughts with others with similar intrests. What some
would consider "drivel", others consider their real feelings and emotion.
That's what makes us unique. We all have a common interest (SG, of course),
but many different ideas and viewpoints.

I do not think that Chris, Ben, Matt, or Kim would expect us to do otherwise.
They know that their music reaches many different people from many different
walks of life. And that music conveys different meanings to different people.
That's the difference of owning a piece of plastic, and owning a piece of
music. And two, from what I've seen, the "guys" are well adjusted enough to
deal with the various aspects of superstardom. They know that women (and some
men) will have fantasies about them. That's all a part of their life now. So
Shroom, I say, "Go on, be your bad self. LUST AWAY!" ;) They know full well
that Shroom has a right to convey her feelings much in the same way that they
publicly share theirs. I'm more than sure they would rather have someone post
to a mailing list than on their porch with a 30.06 demanding service. (Don't
get any ideas, Shroom) I personally enjoy reading the posts that concern
feelings rather than the time used in Rhinosaur for example. Once the time is
established, what else is there to say? So, I guess what it all boils down
to, is if you don't like a post, STOP READING, and delete it. Then it's gone,
and you no longer have to worry about it.

Hmmm... now let's try ONE more rational look at this subject. Say
Soundgarden did agree to do an interview exclusively for our list... yes, I'm

Subject: Re: best ending to a song

First off, I would liketo apologize to those of you who received a monstrosity
of a message when I tried to reply to one of the comments. I wanted to say
something about DOTU. I haven't heard the full CD yet, but from what I have
heard, I can definitely say that DOTU is a return to SG's Louder Than Love and
Ultramega OK style. The first time I heard "Pretty Noose" I was like "Wait a
minute! Is this an old song tha I haven't heard?" The sound of the DOTU is
definitely similar to their old albums. Interestingly enough, I heard SG being
interviewed on the radio show Modern Rock Live about the new album (by the way,
if you haven't listened to that radio show, do it. They have some pretty cool
guests sometimes). One of the questions callers kept asking was how did the
band compare this album with the older ones. The response was that they don't
compare albums. Once an album is finished, they consider it done and over with.
I found this answer kind of odd myself. I was thinking "Either these guys are
bullshitting us or this was an unconscious thing. But the similarity is too
close to be played off as mere coincidence." If any of you have heard DOTU but
haven't heard the pre-BMF albums (Screaming Life and FOPP EPs, Louder Than
Love, and Ultramega OK, and the SOMMS EP- correct me if I left out anything),
then you have a good tast of it. I don't think a SG fan can appreciate BMF,
Superunknown, and Down On The Upside without having heard the earlier albums.

By the way, here is a question for you fans out there that I have had with a
couple of people. Do you think that Badmotorfinger was the most improved album
SG has done? To me, there is no bigger difference in style than the one that
exists between Ultramega OK and BMF. Comments are welcome.

I was in Philadelphia this weekend, and WDRE was running two great contests.
The first was a trip to Seattle to see a SOUNDGARDEN club show before they
go on tour. The other was a "Correspondent's Package" where they send you
to every Lollapalooza date as a behind the scenes reporter. I didn't win
shit, but I sure tried. As a side note, the guest for the Jacksonville, FL
show (if it actually happens) is supposed to be Rage Against the Machine.
They've been cancelling 'palloza dates around the Southeast, so keep
checking to make sure there is a show before you head to one.

On the topic of endings to songs, does anyone else think that the ending to
"Pretty Noose" and "Beyond the Wheel" are very similar? I love both of the
song endings and recently thought about that. Speaking of "Beyond the Wheel", I
would like to name that song for "Best Solo." I may not be the most technical

I agree that Matt is one of the greatest drummers ever. His style is orgasmic
for some of us. But when you give Matt credit, you have to admit that a good
band with a good drummer can't exist without a comparable bass player. In my
opinion, Soundgarden has one of the best rhythm sections I have heard. They
definitely rank up there with Zeppelin in my book. Those of you who are
interested in listening to some good drumming, check out The Aquarium Rescue

Soundgarden Takes The Money & Runs

For what the
guys got paid
 by Molson,
 you can buy a
lot of brew.

This
past Saturday,
while the
Beastie Boys,
Smashing Pumpkins and others were playing for free to draw
attention to the plight of the Tibetan people, Soundgarden were
collecting a check for around $250,000 to play a club date for
Molson. The surprised the 400 or so fans in attendance (around
200 contest winners were flown in from across Canada by the
beer company; another 200 live in the Vancouver area)
witnessed the group's first performance since the release of
their excellent hit album, Down On The Upside. The group
played the Town Pump Cabaret in Vancouver. Twelve more of
these shows, each featuring what Molson calls "one of the
biggest bands in the world," will take place this summer.
Molson clearly wants the alternarock audience. Last year,
you'll recall, they flew 100s of fans to Tutoyaktuk for
performances by Hole, Metallica, Moist and Veruca Salt.
According to ace reporter Sorelle Saidman, who was one of the
few members of the media to attend the show, "the funniest
moment came at the end of the night, when Soundgarden singer
Chris Cornell inadvertently (I think) thanked Labatts, the rival
beer company." Way to go.

Speaking of the Soundgarden list, maybe a few of you members can
enlighten me. Here in Canada, Molson is running a contest. Winners get
a trip to a bar for a party with other winners then a band comes on.
The band is "unknown" until they hit the stage (at least this is the
idea) and then SUPRISE it's a big famous band!

Well, the first band to do this intimate suprise thing was Soundgarden on
June 15th.

Now the commercials are hyping the contest and the beer company while
Soundgarden's latest single is used as background music to the beer
commercial.

What I want to know is, how "secret" was this secret Soundgarden show?

Where was it? Any reports?

And how much was SG paid by the beer company for their appearance and the
use of both their name and their song in a beer commercial?

Just curious....

- ---------

i'd also like to know how much $$ they are getting... i guess sponsorship
is their business, but they talked so much in recent interviews about how
they don't need more money and they have quite enough money -- so why do
a sleazy sponsorship thing?

i mean... one thing to play the show, but quite another to hear your
music in a beer commercial. hearing 'search and destroy' as background
for a nike commercial made my stomach turn, but i can hardly begrudge
iggy pop the money. not to mention that the commercial is a hell of a
lot cooler than any beer commercial could possibly be.

other things that are annoying me: is anyone else getting bombarded from
the fan club with press releases about the contest? i had gotten
messages daily since friday.

also, why the hell do the showbox? why not play the moore theatre -- an
*excellent* venue, and where i really thought the show would be -- so you
can accomodate fans that are under 21? there isn't a bad seat in the
moore, there are *seats* for those who don't need to risk their lives in
the pit, and there's space down front for a managable-sized mosh pit --
the best of all worlds, i would say. i saw the pumpkins there in
february and it was just great.

just some questions...

FYI there is a blurb on the Vancouver show in Addicted to Noise today
(June 18th). It's at http://www.addict.com/html/hifi/MNOTW/ . It's not
terribly flattering, alluding to the fact that the concert was sponsored by
a beer company, and that other bands were donating their time to the
Tibetan cause. Does anyone know if the band was approached to
participate in the Tibetan Freedom Concert? And what do you think

By all means BMF was a big jump IMO (no more H left in me - but allot S)..
I
have never cared for UltraOK, don't even have it on CD. There is a quality
and
change to the sound that occurred between these two albums that's amazing..

You can see the progression from UltraOK into LTL, the band becomes
tighter,
Chris's voices becomes stronger and more controlled. Then with the step up
to
BMF (addition of Ben - thank you very much), things really start pulling
together..

I was hoping DOTU would have one or two really different songs on them. I
love
the fact that DOTU is very raw rock'n'roll and not as commercial (yes Dark
Man
I still think this) as Superunknown.. But I wouldn't have minded a throw
away
cut based on something really different from them.. I would love to hear
Chris do a real love song - yes, I enjoy a good love song, candle lit
dinners,
wild flowers, feather beds, and the taste of sweet wine taken from my
lover's
lips (got your attention on that one - right). How about Kim doing a good
Muddy
Waters type "Blues" number.

To me, there is a big change between all their albums. From the begining to
now, there is a different soundgarden on all of them. I'll take it from the
most recent, DOTU. Superunknown was dark and not very much "soundgarden
like" But DOTU sounds more like Soundgarden in the BMF days. LTL was their
debut to the world, and you can hear the change from that to BMF. There is
just some big change that they take, that you really can't explain.
