Some of the material on DOTU reminds me somewhat of SG's Louder stage. For
instance, the first time I heard Tighter and Tighter, my ears perked up
because I thought that the CD had suddenly switched to LTL. It sounds a lot
to me like some of the Hiro written music on that album, like I Awake or No
Wrong No Right. My favorite last song on a SG album has always been Full
On. Boot Camp reminds me of that song, especially the beginning, perhaps
because they're both brilliant songs. Anyone else notice any similar tunes?

a lot of the slow, softer, dirty songs off of DotU remind me of "ultramega
OK"... especially the wild, no direction solos and chris's perfectly timed
screeches...

If you look at it from the other point of view though, although there is
present the type of praise which you and quite possibly the members of SG
would find repulsive, you do as well, find a lot of the sincere and musical
appreciation of the band. You would need to look no further than the
current topics of b-sides, guitar technique, including the emotional and
techincal merits of Kim's work on DOTU, as well as a discussion of the
element of the 'love song' in SG's music. Where else would one be able to
go to get this far into the depth of the music of the band. How many
average fans of SG even are aware of the presense of the weatlh of b-sides
that exist. Would Joe Q. Listener on rockline know that SG has never
written an actual sloppy love song like so many other rockbands, especially
considering the fact that A&M originally tried to push SG with all the hair
metal trendy acts? I'm not the type to flame anyone so I hope that you can
just look at the list in more than one aspect. Besides, like it or not,
there is a lot of sincerity in Shroom's posts as well, and like it or not,
there is a sexual as well as a musical aspect to any musical act that ever
existed. I don't think that this would be a sincere list if that wasn't
expressed as well and you could be sure that every member in SG is aware of
that, love it or hate it.

I often sleep to SG, but maybe I can only do that because my stereo is too

Hey Listers!

some general comments:

Bickering Listers: (with PPP connections)

2 words, MAIL FILTERING. If you have some dough ($89.95), the best email
program (IMHO) is Eudora Pro 2.2 The filter system for email is very simple
and powerful. You can send specific users comments right to your trash
file! Or you can send those pesky unsubscribe emails into the crapper! I
haven't read some people comments (guess who) in months...It's been bliss
:-) Those of you with no cash...you can download a GREAT EMAIL PROGRAM -
Pegasus Mail. I don't remember the URL, but it's listed in Yahoo. It
contains the same filter capacities as Eudora. <sarcasm> Isn't censorship
great?!! </sarcasm>

Bickering Listers: (w/o a PPP connection)

If you cant FILTER these unwanted ideas via mechanical means...you'll need
lots of tolerance and a thick skin. Good Luck. I guess you could say that
the filter tool is similar to a drug that masks (todays) reality.
Interesting concept.

The Tabloid Culture that rose from the 80's is widely accepted in todays
society. I think it will always exist because cheap sensationalism is just
so damn appealing.

We'll have to learn to deal with it because it's not going to go away.....

Soundgarden Stuff:

Favorite B-sides: (in no order)

Beyond The Wheel (Live) - Not only is it a great version, but I was at the show!
Kyle Petty, Son of Richard - Great title, Great song.
I Don't Care About You - I don't...

On the topic of speeding (driving) to SG...When I head to my summer home
(LOL :-), I travel South on Rt. 62 (Bailey Ave) in Buffalo. I find that
Badmotorfinger is the absolute perfect album to listen to. The songs form a
soundtrack to the existing Buffalo scenery. "Rusty Cage" is perfect as I
race to get out of the high crime section of town. "Room a Thousand Years
Wide" starts just as I start driving by the burned out and deserted
warehouse district of South Buffalo...very Mad Max'ish. To make it a
perfect scenario, Buffalo would have to build some tunnels when I get to
"Jesus Christ Pose". I always thought of the opening wall of noise as the
beginning tunnel ride to hell. As sort of the 90's response to the Byrd's
above air anthem "Eight Miles High". The Byrd's drug induced flower power
ditty may have wanted to take you to heaven, but SG's JCP takes you to
hell...neat.

Best ending to any Soundgarden song for mine is that of Black Hole Sun...the
chorus reverts to the 6/4 section of the song, Kim's guitar doing whaling
bends, before one single bar of the familiar riff from the guitar solo, and
the final chords.

It's the final chords that do it for me...the original guitar sound (the
simple G5 chord) fading out to be replaced by the sound of discordant echoes
and feedback, the feeling that the song doesn't want to be resolved so
simply, capping off a wonderful song...

Okay, so I'm biased...it's one of my favourites!

I thought it looked to be a pretty good deal so I picked 'em up. Right now I'm listening to "Hi Fi Way" and

It's black w/ the Superunknown cover-image on the front. All you can see of

My number one solo would be Black Hole Sun, for it's addition to the feel of
the song...I feel it really clutters the song, adds to the intensity and
emotion - the solo seems to pass with a flurry, but to look at the
supporting guitar tab, you know that Kim is an amazing guitarist!

Following extensive audio review and evaluation of the latest release from
the band, once can clearly detect various and sundry references that evoke
ancient and/or biblical themes. Additionally, many of Mr. Thayil's solos
are reminiscent of pre-Georgian monastic choir sonatas documented from the
time of St. Columbine. Neither of these instances are unintentional, as
these musical and lyrical passages were foreshadowed in much of the group's
early compositions.

did you enjoy that?
(did you even understand it?)

you don't like the posts, don't read them. but **NO ONE** on this list has
the right to judge anyone's love of this band and this music.

i happened to be lucky enough on friday to have heard about the tickets and
to have been in a financial and professional position that allowed me to run
out of my office, grab $50 out of the cash machine and run to ticketmaster.
all that makes me is LUCKY. *not* a "better fan".

lucky i'm 21 and can get in the venue, lucky i live in seattle, lucky i have
a job that pays me enough that i didn't have to choose between the tickets
and milk for my kids, lucky that i have a position that allows me to say
'going now'. the guy on the other side of town who couldn't afford the $$
and couldn't leave his job without risking being fired -- he's not less of a
soundgarden fan than i am. i'm just really fucking lucky and i thanked the
goddess the whole way home and will probably keep thanking her until the
show is over.

my legs shook from the minute i got off the bus near ticketmaster and i
didn't breathe normally until i got on the line. i **cried** when i got
those tickets in my hand. quite literally shed tears in public. i didn't
cry because i'm going to be able to see chris cornell with his shirt off,
fer chrissakes. i cried because music is the one thing that keeps me alive
each day and i view soundgarden (and the other bands that make up my core
being) as one of the many blessings that i have. i challenge anyone here to
look me in the eye and tell me that i'm not a real fan, or i'm a superficial
fan, or that i don't love the band for the 'right reasons' (whatever the
fuck those may be -- i'd like to see your rule book, please?)

i'm not a better fan than anybody here, i'm not a lesser fan than anybody
here. we are all soundgarden fans. let us try to respect the ways that
each of us choose to express that and be thankful that we have a common
forum in which to do so. i got on line on friday behind a fellow somms-ter
and it was just amazing to be able to spend that agonizing waiting time
talking a mile a minute with someone i hadn't met or spoken to or even
exchanged email with until that moment -- our common bond being the band and
the mailing list.

so thank you to seth for providing the forum, and thanks to the many of you
who participate in this community in the true spirit of sharing the music.

when i first saw this one come through, my first thought was that the
problem with kim's guitar solos is that they are so much part of the song
that they almost do not stand out as solos. unless you are a musician who
is going to listen to the songs specifically for that, they don't stand out
as Big Rock Solos. which is the whole point, i think, no? ;->

I've always seemed to catch traffic just before the speed traps. However.
Just this Saturday night gone, I did manage to get a beat up Ford Laser
out to about 120 in a 60 (kmh) zone just by listening to Ty Cobb. I find
though, that the all time best speeding song must be the extended remix
of Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry.

But if you really want to scare your friends, get out onto a
tight twisty dirt road, throw in some Vivaldi and take a friend for a
spin. I like "Spring". There's just something about listening to a bit
of string symph whilst heading sideways towards a collection of trees at

Another neat trick is to get your parents to notice your
collection of Hayduke books then see you reading "The Terrorists

these kool questions like "are you feeling okay?" and "Where did we go
wrong?"

Hmmmm. Oh well. Got 2 exams this week so I should stop stalling and
actually get some study done. Be well.

Oh and just one more thing. (Not SG) What does Andy Wood sing

Hmmm... seems like SOMEONE forgot how to use their delete button. As I
recall, we had settled this issue a few months back. I guess not all of us
learn the first time around. Utter crap? So nice of you to say so... but
let's take a rational look at this for a moment. If 70% of the posts are CC
sexy body oriented, then would it be wrong to assume that a good majority of
the list actually ENJOYS those posts? Well, damn me straight to hell... I
believe that COULD actually be a possibility!! Teeny-bopper groupie
worship-the-musicians-not-appreciate-the-music type of talk? That's funny!
Actually, I get a big kick out of the whole "how dare you think about Chris'
nipples and not the guitar chords while he's running around shirtless!!"
attitude.
Carolyn, darlin'... I would have thought that everyone would have been
aware of this by now, but I'll say it again... all of us have different
reasons for being on this list. You enjoy discussing the music; I enjoy
discussing the music (a little), and other interesting stuff (such as CC's
sexy body). As to the whole music side, I get bored with everyone
overanalyzing the lyrics... and as I'm not musically gifted, I can't really
follow the technical aspects of the list. So there you go... two different
people... two different opinions... and two different types of posts. Keeps
things interesting for all involved, wouldn't you say?

>EXACTLY the kind of talk the guys from Soundgarden (so they've said

I'm sure I could dig out a few interviews in which Chris states that he
doesn't really care for people overanalyzing his lyrics, too. Now that
doesn't seem to be stopping anyone from doing it. So why should I (or anyone
else) stop discussing the sexual and other interesting aspects of
Soundgarden, just because the guys don't like it? We shouldn't. And I most
certainly won't stop. (Notice please, that the posts have not been overly
graphic.) Yes, I respect Chris' opinions... but unless the man (or his wife)
contacts ME personally and says "Shroom, quit talking about my sexy body!!",
then I'm going to keep on as I always have. Again... might I stress the
utter convenience of the DELETE button? Such a handy device...

Amen! And more power to all of us for not being afraid to say what we
feel. In fact, at this particular moment, I personally feel like saying,
"That new cover of Spin magazine is HOT!! Dare I say that it is
possibly THE greatest picture of the band ever taken? <sigh> Wet dream
material if I've ever seen it. And, (can you believe it?!?) Chris even has
his shirt on!! How grand!! Kudos to the photographer on doing such a groovy
job!!"
Oh my, I feel SO much better now...

>Starting to feel that there aren't many left on this list who appreciate
>the music for the music itself............

Hmmm... can you please explain what "appreciating the music for the
music" means? If I announced that I find the song Boot Camp intensely
erotic, would that constitute appreciation of the music? If that's what
you're seeking, then I'm sure I could accommodate you with a detailed
explanation of my feelings on it... practically note for note. Discussion of
the music... isn't that what 'everyone' wants? ;)
This is all quite silly, don't you think? Starting yet another flame

In response to Caryn's thoughts on Kim and Matt's solos, I can see her point
about Kim being that I do not play guitar. However, on the other hand, when
she mentioned that Matt should roll off a solo or two, I feel he often does,
his fills are so technically amazing. He has to be one of the best finesse
drummers in the rock field today. I've been playing the skins for about 5
years and I still shudder when I listen to SG after Ultramega. Matt is so
innovative, he always knows the right cymbal to use or substitute for an
ordinary snare hit. I've heard musicians in the past say that SG tends to
be simple but my response is always that they should listen to Matt. So I
guess that Kim's solos also stand out if you are familiar with the guitar,
the same way Matt's playing is an opus to me because I'm familiar with the
drums.
Some of my favorite songs from a drumming perspective:

Ugly truth
Rusty cage
Mind Riot (I'm positive he grows a third and fourth arm during the chorus)
JCP
TDITTL
Let me drown
Show Me (It's brilliant how he waits till the end of the fourth note to hit
his snare)
Spoonman
Pretty noose
Burden in my hand

to name a few.....Stephen

Sommsters,

I, like Shroom, have gotten slightly behind in my mail (I *am* going to write
you Kathie <g>). So, to all who are wondering where the hell I went, I'm here,
trying to catch up. Ok, Vasant wrote a very well done post about the
Soundgarden/Smashing Pumpkins issue. I had a similar experience with Pearl Jam,
don't get me wrong, I really like Pearl Jam, but I could never put my finger on
why I just didn't get totally into them. Until yesterday. My stupid boyfriend
got home from vacation on Saturday and I went over to his house to see him and
he had bought The Garden Grows, Fell On Black Days compass (?) pack w/ Girl U
Want and Motorcycle Loop on it, and Supermotorfinger--that limited edition box
set with redoen artwork and She Likes Surprises. Anyway, I was flipping out and
getting all excited a/b them and was wondering why he wasn't too-- these are
really cool things and he wasn't happy about them. I asked him what the hell was
wrong, and he's all, "Well, Soundgarden's ok, but Pearl Jam's my favorite band.
I got these just to have them." My mouth dropped. First, he knows how much I
love SG, and that I would have killed to have this kind of stuff. And he just
bought them for his collection. Secondly, he could have spent his money on PJ
stuff for himself and gotten the other stuff for someone who would die to have
it and I could have just paid him back. But noooo, he had to piss me off instead
by holding them just outside of my grip. Am I being stupid about this??? Doesn't
it piss you guys off when you see ppl who don't like the band half as much as
you get cool stuff for the sole purpose of showing it off? Anyway, the reason
(one of them) that I don't like PJ as much as dear ol' Chris, is that I feel Ed
always sings about victims and being defeated. I for one, don't *feel* like a
victim. I have bad days sure, but so does everyone else. When I have a bad day,
I would rather be cheered by songs like FOBD and BUTOW that correctly harbor
those feelings rather than wallowing is hopeless apathy with Indifference. Make
sense? PJ just depresses me too much, and Ed's games with the media are very
annoying. I'd really like to hear that new CD, instead of waiting for years
until he decides he's ready. Anyway, I'll shut up now, I've got things to do.
See you guys. And thanks for understanding.

Luv,
~Flutter Girl~

If you count the chatter over the beginning of Applebite, I think
there is about 13 minutes worth of commentary, versus the 8 or so

That's a good call - but I think his general playing is amazing. The way
Matt can cope with changes in time signatures boggles the mind - end of
Rusty Cage is an example. I now have the beat figured out, but there's no
way I would pick it from Matt's drumming, because he's able to take that
beat and syncopate/anticipate so well, it just boggles the mind...

I wonder how many drummers could do what Matt does? Do you think he's
exclusive in his field or do you think other drummers, if they were so
inclined to play such rhythmically difficult music, could rise to the
occassion? I wouldn't think there would be too many who would have the
natural skill, but what do you think?

>I've heard musicians in the past say that SG tends to

If that's the case, there's complexity in that simplicity, if you know what
I mean...Matt makes his general drumming interesting, let alone fills etc.

Hats off to Matt...
