From: tonerkin@usa.pipeline.com (Tonerkin)

On my way home from work tonight the guy on the radio announced a contest
to win a trip to Seattle to see a "pre-Lolla" show by Soundgarden in
Seattle June 20th. I don't know any other details. Just thought I'd pass
it along!!
And on the subject of old farts still being in bands. the Rolling
Stones are really old but the Steel Wheels tour saw them playing their
ancient asses off!!! It's all a state of mind kiddies! Ozzie just bite off

I finally got the new Spin and I really enjoyed the SG article. Its
great to know that after all this time and success that they are still
so down to earth. The thing that really impressed me is that Chris is
still so, shall we say, HUMBLE. I really liked how he talked about his
lack of formal education:
"I still regret dropping out, especially being a guy that writes
words for a living. I pretty much have a seventh-grade Catholic school
education; it would have been helpful if I had continued".

He could just say "what the fuck, I write terrific songs even though I
never finished school."

This is really a unique group of guys. Which must be why they attract
such a unique group of fans (At least those of us on this list, which
seems to be full of truly great people).
Thats all I had to say; I'll probably have more after I read the
digest, but the sun is out and I need to get out there too.

Subject: Re:Vasant

Vasant,

First off, I would like to thank you for sharing your in depth letter with
us on the list. It shows the character strength of the collective people
who make up the list when someone can write such an emotionally charged
essay such as yours.
I have gone through many stages in my life where I
have switched from one favorite band to another as well for varying
different reasons including style of music, vocals and even deepening
emotions and growing maturity in myself. Every band that I have considered
a favorite at one time or another though is still a very special part of my
memory and personality. Before finding SG, I was into death metal for many
years. I immersed myself in that music like I had none before in my life,
but after several years of listening to it, I began to feel restless and I
realized that the genre had nothing left to offer me. That is around the
time that SG stepped into my life and filled the musical void left in me by
changing feelings toward style. I feel that today, SG means more to me
personally than any other band I've ever considered at the zenith of my
musical tastes. On the other hand, I feel that my respect for SG's music
and philosophy was cultivated by all of the experiences and emotions that my
earlier musical stages molded into me.
From what I have heard of Smashing Pumpkins, I think that they are an
important and talented band (I don't own any of their albums, but I have
heard them many times). Billy Corgan has a songwriting style that can be
called very individual. He obviously follows his own calling when he writes
a song unlike so many musicians who only build on the marketability of
others. He certainly has a talent, like one Kurt Cobain, for writing a
catchy central riff to build a song around. However, I feel he leaves a lot
to be desired in the vocal department and I feel that SP would be greatly
improved if they obtained a vocalist with more ability, letting Corgan
concentrate more on his other strengths. About comparing them to SG, I
would say that SG is a more mature band having been together for longer and
more diverse in style. SG is the product of four musical talents whereas SP
is largely built on Corgan's bible. In addition, as I mentioned before, I
don't think I have to devote much time to comparing the vocal capabilities
of the two bands. Overall, I think that both are definitely worth listening
to and taking the time as well, to think about what messages they are trying
to portray in their music and lyrics.
Again, let me thank you as well as the other members of the list, for
sharing their feelings and thoughts with me and everyone else on the list.

Actually, Ty Cobb always gives me the urge to take my Cougar out of
mothballs and wind it up to about 130 (m.p.h.) on Interstate 95. Uh,
nobody on this list is a State Trooper, are they?

Come to think of it, Big Dumb Sex has the same effect on me. Well, o.k.,
I admit it. Any song where you can yell "FUCK!" at the top of your lungs
would probably have the same effect on me...

At what time of the day do you find it possible to do 130 mph on I95 (the road
from hell)??? Every time I'm on this road (going south), I sit in bumper to
bumper traffic. But I see it as a time and a way to enlighten the musical
needs of the people around me. I put SG on, turn the volume up and hope no one
guns me down - and believe me on I95 that is no joke.... But it does this old
heart good to see people get that ugly look on their faces when I pull up
beside them with and Big Dumb Sex is playing... Just got to remember not to
make eye contact.. :-)

The song that makes me want to push hard of the gas petal is "Rusty Cage".
What more could you ask for than Chris screaming at you to break out of your
cage and run and do it at break neck speed.

How about the solo for Mailman? Just the way it starts with the weird
harmonics and the pick slide, that's always been a high spot on Superunknown
for me. Also Black Hole Sun has a pretty decent couple of solos. No others
spring to mind at the moment, except maybe the Rhinosaur solo, even though it
doesn't quite fit with the rest of the song it's still a damn fine solo, IMHO.
It seems to me that most of the really good solos are on the later albums. I'm

Am yet to get a speeding ticket for it (thankfully) But half the time I am

Just a note about IRC, what I usally do when logged on, I bring up my IRC
client join #somms and #soundgarden and just let it sit the whole time I am
logged on to the net getting mail or whatever. If a few ppl did this I am
sure we would eventually run into each other :) Plus it's always helpfull to
have a free net account. How about the ppl working places with direct
connections? When getting to work, load up IRC and join #somms. So ppl start
to appear on channel.

BTW #somms as far as I know is ment to be the offical somms list irc
channel. While #soundgarden was ment to be set up by Imusic.

THIS IS NOT FAIR!!!!

All these stories about people speeding to Soundgarden...and I tell you
sinners to REPENT!!! Heaven will strike upon thee with great vengeance when
you are found to be speeding!

No, just kidding, it's me with sour grapes. I was caught speeding mid
May...which means I have to behave myself until October, when I get my full
open license, because it just takes one more infringement on the road (for
ANYTHING!) and I'm back to getting my learners... YUK!!

%#$%#%!! 40km/h zones... they should be banned!! I mean, what's wrong with
doing 60km/h in a 40km/h zone?!? Rotten radar traps... And to make matters
worse, it wasn't to Soundgarden! It was to Faith No More... ah well...

But I can relate. Any reasonably fast song of Soundgarden, particularly
Rusty Cage, Spoonman, Never the Machine Forever and Jesus Christ Pose give
me that extra throttle action...but even worse, I start driving like a
hatchback driver on steroids, which is not good when you're driving a decent
sized sedan...

Heh heh - Brisbane-ites in Australia watchout for a yellow Falcon... :>

"All of a sudden, there's pictures of me with my shirt off in all these
metal pin-up magazines," says Chris. "That shit gets on your nerves
really quick. One photographer told me, 'It's alright, I know how to
photograph naked bodies. I do pictures for Penthouse and Playboy"

"The 50th time a photographer told me to take my shirt off, it was
like, 'I'll wear lots of shirts from now on',"Chris continues. "I was
kind of bummed out because the focus had nothing to do with the music.
It was just the fact that I had long hair......"

".....and nice tits!" hoots Kim Thayil

THAT is such a difficult question!! Problem is that Kim's guitar solos are
so cohesive and deceptively simple ie. they sound great, but I have the
complete guitar tablature to Superunknown, Badmotorfinger and Louder than
Love, and I know that I, as a still quite amateur guitar player, am a long
way from tackling any of them!

My number one solo would be Black Hole Sun, for it's addition to the feel of
the song...I feel it really clutters the song, adds to the intensity and
emotion - the solo seems to pass with a flurry, but to look at the
supporting guitar tab, you know that Kim is an amazing guitarist!

Subject: RE:Mayor's love song...

After the mayor asked me to explicate the lyrics to Somewhere, I took out my
copy of BMF and looked at the lyrics sheet and said, 'dang, this is thought
provoking but difficult to explain.' I feel that the song is about the
confusing feelings, thoughts, and actions that love causes. One of the keys
to my theory is at the end of the first stanza where Ben writes And I die to
die/And I cry to cry/But I know why. He seems sure about all of the things
in the list but he's not sure why he was in love, or why something caused
the feeling to be lost. Another line that displays confusion is in the
second chorus where he writes 'Things that should/live in all the keeps.'
Everything is out of order in the world that he's writing about, and his
grief is evident in the line 'Only we're no longer/allowed to be.' This
happens to be my favorite line of the song as well and I love the way that
Chris sings it. Through my experiences with the abyss known as love, there
seems to be nothing else in this world, with the exception of large firearms
that can quite set your world in disarray like it.

Is this man insane or just plain stupid? I lasted one whole night listening
through all my SG CD's in one sitting. If I thought it dragged on, why would
they be my favorite band. To me, I think that guy has something against
Soundgarden, and I don't think it's right for him to put his opinions so
strongly down without being an editorial. If everyone thought the same way
he did, there would be no list, there would be no fans, there might not even
be a soundgarden!

I think that is a great idea. After all, Ben(and Matt) drives the band.
Without them, Soundgarden would not have any real driving force. yea, we
all love Chris(not that way gals(the other way)) and we know that he's got
the best voice ever, but what about the rest of the band(the rest of my sons)

Ben. the youngest member of the band, age wise and music wise. he has
brought so much to this band, and I think he should be recognized for it.
The base is one of the easiest instrument, but he does it sooo well, and he
is one of the loudest base players(besides Flea), but awesome!

Matt. second youngest age wise, and one of the original members(after Chris
was the drummer). (just incase your are reading this Matt, if you ever get
your wrist in a sling, or somethin' else that prevents you from drummin'(god
forbid), I know a guy who is the best drummer in NJ, he would gladly fill in)
He was probably born with drumsticks in his hand. He has dome so much in so
much time, that hey, bands want to use him too.

That's all i have to say about that!

Subject: My feelings(like they count)

Ok, I'm going to make this as brief as I can(that may be near
impossible).
Soundgarden to me is an escape from everything. I can't stand anyone, I
just listen to blow up the outside world, and I feel better. I'm feeling
down and depressed, I listen to Fell on Black Days. It seems Like there is
some kind of connection to the band, and that I relate to them soooo much.
It's like they know exactly what I'm feeling, and they write a song to help
my mood. I think most deticated fans(like me)Have that connection.

Now some of the old fans get mad when a new one comes along that
says such a thing. I guess they could be talking about me. I'm one of the
newest, freshest fans, but yet I'm sooo devoted. the first song I heard by
them is Black Hole Sun. I'm too young to remember them in the old days, and
no radio station I listened to in NY played them until BHS. Once I heard
that song, It filled me. It was like they knew what I felt like. I bought
Superunknown 3 days after that, and I saw that they had more than just that
one. I thought that they were a new band, but I didn't know any better. I
bought most of the stuff the ever recorded, just missing a couple, like
SOMMS, but I still feel close to them. Not to mention actually getting close
to them! I love those guys to the bottom of my heart, and would love 'um
even after they brake up(if they ever do(god forbid)), I would probably go to
their funeral, but I just am so devoted, and connected to them like I bet
most of you are.

When I found this faithful group, I felt somewhat weird. I
guess eathier that I didn't feel as devoted, or just 'cause there was more
people just like me. It's an obsession we have. That obsession is to be
together and gossip about what we love the most. Music and Soundgarden.

I leave my 4 sons to be worshiped by your every hand!

Big chills. Just the sound of his voice, and the dankness of the guitar. Ohh,
it just came on my tape. More chills.

#Sub Pop Rock City - Simply because of the idea of using a phone conversation
#in a song with Chris pretending to be Poneman & Pavitt (all though no one
#believes that). Also I vote this as the best ending to a song. "bye..."
#- -cymbal crash- (c:

Definitely one of my favs. I love the part where Kim just seems to go nuts
on his guitar. I also really like the little phone conversation.

#Birth Ritual (demo version) - It simply kills the version on Singles & yes,
#that's saying an awful lot.

I also must include Birth Ritual, but I have not heard the demo.

Other Favorites:

Homicidal Suicidal - This one jussst makes me crank the stereo, and sing along.
I don't know what it is exactly, but i love it.

Kyle Petty ... - Gotta love this song.

Hmm, thats all I can thing of right now.

YEEEEEEEHAAAAA!!!

i thought my luck had run out when i got that game 7 sonics ticket for 12
bucks less than face value.......

on a seattle station today they just announced a surprise performance of
the one and only SG at a "small" club here in town (seattle, obviously)
and that tickets were going on sale at 4. i started calling at 3:45 and
after many "we're sorry all circuits are busy" i finally got through and
was put on hold for 20 minutes or so. i got my maxmimum allowance of 2
tickets and am seeing them for the first time in a small venue.

when i was freshman at the university of north carolina, they came to the
infamous (in those parts) cats cradle TWICE to promote louder than love
and i missed them both times. the next chance i had was at lollapalooza,
obviously a diffrent scene. now my dream has come true, i finally get my
chance again to see them in a club.

hopefully other seattle area people on the list got tickets as well. let
me know!!!!!

For me, i have to be really tired to fall asleep to music. Jimi Hendrix's

night, but i was
drifiting in and out. I would be hazily drifting along and my mind would go

asleep, dreaming waking, it was really strange. I had to turn it off on
Zero Chance because i had school the next day and it was already late. It
was really kinda trippy tho.
