This just has to be my fav soundgarden song at present.

The end lyrics just say it all - 'I feel I'm going, fell I'm slowing
down.....'

Anyone else think the same?

I am a huge garden fan and whoever thinks they drag on doesnt realize they
are priveleged to listen to such a great band for that much longer. I also
think Chris is the greatest lyricist that has ever lived--no exagerrating.
His songs have so much meaning--i think. What do you think of "an unkind,"
track 15 from down... written by ben? That is such a sweet song, same with
"zero chance"--sounds like old garden. Keep emailin' me--I love to talk

Subject: sg thru headphones & other first times

well, i've been listening to superunkown all week through headphones at work
and it's become a fucking religious experience. i always listened to it in
my car or while doing dishes (i don't know why, it was my favorite doing
dishes music) and i don't know, it's also been a while too, maybe the sound
has had some time to grow on me... i dunno... have you ever left an album
and then come back to it and suddenly there are dimensions you've never seen
before? it's always been the sign of an incredible talent to me...

i also just remembered the first time i heard "girl u want"... i flew to
milwaukee last july at the last minute to see pearl jam... i thought it was
going to be their last show for some reason (the full story is on my web
page if you are so interested ;-) ) anyway, the only way to get me there was
to fly me on a red-eye charter into chicago and then i rented a car and
drove to milwaukee... i got in around 5am and was on the road immediately,
and as the sun was coming up the first thing i heard on *gak* Q101 was, you
guessed it, "girl u want"! i knew it was devo immediately having been a big
fan back then, and then i knew it was sg immediately as soon as i heard
chris! i swear i almost crashed the damn rental car.... which of course led
to my quest for a copy of SOMMS that cost less than $80.

i' ve been wondering about the spin fashion spread... and i wonder if it
wasn't just what the guys were wearing at the time? i just can't see them
dressing up, and this is because of something susan silver specifically
mentioned in "hype!". they were showing how "grunge" became a fashion trend
and how vogue et al were doing fashion layouts showing "grunge fashion", and
susan said (i'm paraphrasing here) how pissed off she got at these magazines
who called her up presuming that she would allow her clients to participate
in such a farce. she wouldn't do it then, i can't see her doing it now.

dena, you said the other night that you read that "hype!" got distribution
- -- do you remember where you read this??

anyway, off to sleep

Subject: Thumbs & the like

Morning folks!,

I just thought I'd take a break to give y'all my opinion on the thumbs of a
guitar player.... Well, err.. Someone mentioned having to use the thumb to
stabilize your guitar while you're playing it, and for the most part I'd
have to agree. But sometimes, when I'm playing a riff which requires a huge
span (e.g. a riff which contains hammer-ons from the 1st to the 6th fret) I
have this tendency to use my thumbs.

If you can imagine the guitar neck lying flat, and your hand just hovering
over it (little pinky above 1st, thumb above 6th fret) then you're nearly
there :) But I STILL don't really see the point of having double jointed
thumbs ! Well, apart from the G chord thing....

KIM THAYIL, If you're out there, PLEASE enlighten us :)

One last question.... Has anyone else worked out BUTOW yet?, 'cos if not
I'll post it tommorrow sometime.

Much Respect,

I saw him play on Sunday and he did the exact same thing, but there were no
stairs for him to be helped down. They actually helped him walk off the stage
and it was just a level floor, quite funny. But i don't think that soundgarden
will reach that point ever. They will probably stop while they're still good
and not drag on like all those older bands who have lost a lot of fans because
you can practically see them aging on stage.

Absolutely.. :) It's the type of song that makes your spine shiver. The
arpeggios over "I'm gone" do that all the time. Plus it has one of the best
guitar solos on the album, IMHO. Who thinks it's about Susan? Cause they must

during and after this show. i don't care if you *have* seen SG live; you
have not been kicked in the head by rock'n'roll until you've experienced a

months ago and that show is now tied for first on my top 5 concerts attended

Wow! More and more great thread ideas:

In response to Limo Wreck's idea of the best B-sides....I would HAVE to go
with Birth Ritual(unquestionably SG's best song) and Like Suicide(acoustic).
Hands down. No argument.(ok, I could also sneak in Homicidal/Suicidal AND
Show Me)........If anyone EVER has the chance to pick up Fresh Deadly
Rarities, GET IT!! It's probably one of the very best additions to any CD
collection.

Now going to Mayor's idea of the 'unbridled love song',,, the answer just
reeks of Somewhere(shows Ben in his finest writing style) and like someone
else had posted, Call Me A Dog(It just seems like one of those songs that you
would sing to your girlfriend if you fucked up the relationship or somethin'!)

My thoughts,

Subject: Mayor's Love Song Thoughts

Thank Christ Soundgarden doesn't do "Hootie/Richard Marx/Deborah Gibson
Love Songs". Too many bands out there will write a song, then the stupid
ass singer will fill it with shitty lines like "Pour some sugar on me" or
"Baby, you give good love" or some shit like "everything I do . . . I do
it for you".

That's 48% why soundgarden is so good. Who want's to hear songs about
the same fucking thing all day long (ie Love). GOD I HATE LOVE SONGS!!!
It's so cliche and lacks imagination.

"Nowhere but You" and "Fluttergirl" were both the closest to love songs I
agree. But they both are more "regret" songs then "unabashed love" songs.

Whoever thought "somewhere" was a love song . . . explicate the lyrics .
. . I've always thought the same but it's really more general than that I
think.

why the hell is Susan Silver married to Chris and not you???
( of course, I'm sure the picture is wishful thinking, OR IS IT??)

Anyway, da big news here in Oz is that the local music press has
confirmed that SG will be here by the end of the year. YEEEE - HAAAA!!!!!
One of Melbourne's music papers has an interview with CC as well as a
full colour front page pic o' the boyz. If I get the time I might
transcribe it... see what happens.

Oh yeah, those sommsters from OZ and abroad who want me to copy
the DOTU promo video - I haven't forgotten you, but I've been busy
organising an interstate tour for one of the bands I manage.
I'll try to get something happening in the next couple o' weeks.

Did anyone in Oz or elsewhere buy the Rusty Cage single pack
years ago with the 3 - clip Soundgarden video for Aus.$9.95?
Was this Australian only or what??

I know I'm slow, but I just checked out the somms t-shirt on
Seth's page. Way cool!! If I could just get some cash together....

Currently 3:25 am in cold ol' Collingwood, Victoria, Australia,
and about 2 degrees C.

her hubby also did the artwork for "Fell on Black Days" single) and she

I stumbled across a groovy find today... A Super Electro Homepage!

Who or what the hell is Super Electro you ask? Why, its "Wellwater
Conspiracy"'s record label...

Who or what the hell is Wellwater Conspiracy you ask? Its a Matt
Cameron/Ben Shepherd/John Paul McBain side project (Hater minus two
members)

Anyways, there is a bit of Wellwater/Hater info there as well as an
order form for the "Trowerchord" 7" (only 1000 made). I recommend
that anyone should get this if they can, Matt Cameron sings on the
track "Green Undertow". Ben sings on "Trowerchord".

The page said that Hater and Wellwater Conspiracy should both be
releasing 7"s on Super Electro this year. As well, it said that
Wellwater Conspiracy will be releasing a CD on Third Gear records.

she was probably there, but might not have been able to be seated as the
same row as the band. ;-( there's always a HUGE seating shortage at these
awards shows, and they put the artists down front for maximum camera
exposure, and there are always more artists than there are seats. she might
have been sitting in front or behind, or they might just have asked for the
4 band seats and susan was sitting with other family members further back in
the artist guest seats.

another possibility is that as the manager of two internationally successful
rock bands, she might have been BUSY WORKING! i know someone who works down
near the silver mgmt offices and she talks about seeing susan there early
sunday mornings. it's a huge, tough job and she's incredibly professional.

the other thing i have heard (and again, i'm not a close friend of the
family, so this is of course hearsay) is that they have a very independent
marriage in which both of them have lots of space... the grammys are NOT a
lot of fun to go to in some ways, especially for someone like susan who is
her own person -- to be there as "the wife of" can't be a lot of fun for
her. has nothing to do with pride/love/etc. it's a lot of sitting around
and waiting... you're there for HOURS... i know i sound like eddie vedder

My favorite b-sides are:

Toy Box - This is better than just about anything they've ever done. I just
don't think it's too Soundgarden. When Chris yells "please take me back to
this little girl's hand"... chills I tell you.. CHILLS!

Fresh Deadly Roses - Like Toy Box... it's not very reminiscent of early
Soundgarden but another amazing heart jerking, emotionally record.

Can You See Me - I just really love this song. Soundgarden doing Hendrix &
adlibbing silly lyrics. Ya gotta love it (c:

Sub Pop Rock City - Simply because of the idea of using a phone conversation
in a song with Chris pretending to be Poneman & Pavitt (all though no one
believes that). Also I vote this as the best ending to a song. "bye..."
- -cymbal crash- (c:

Show Me - Ben wrote it. What more needs to be said? (by the way, I'll vote
for Shroom 96 as long as Ben's her running mate.. imagine the stories the:
 "hell ya I inhaled... ")

Birth Ritual (demo version) - It simply kills the version on Singles & yes,
that's saying an awful lot.

Cold Bitch - I dated her. (c:

OK.... I could go on forever (all though I'd eventually run out of songs &
neglect to find the reason why I still never skip Motorcycle Loop) but I'll
end this with a resounding thud.

A resounding thud.

SP25, which is the catalog number for sub-pop-200. there is a link to
a page for that release which has, among other things, the clip for

From: vman@ctdnet.acns.nwu.edu (Vasant Ramamurthy)
Subject: A dilemma resolved

I've been thinking for a while, who really is my most favorite band? I've
always had this dilemma as to whether it's Smashing Pumpkins or
Soundgarden. The first CD I ever bought was by Soundgarden. On the other
hand, Siamese Dream is, to me, *the* standard for a completely perfect
album, from first to last track. Soundgarden comes very close, but there
are always 1 or 2 tracks I skip on each album. I'm not sure anyone can
really convince me that SG's music is better than SP's music, and vice
versa. I'll never be able to resolve that question. I was thinking about
this question again this week. I finally resolved it after seeing and
hearing a few stuff. I saw the video for "Pretty Noose" lots more times,
and suddenly I became attracted to the song. Before, I thought, "It's just
a single that I'll like for a while, then get sick of it because of radio
overkill." But no, the video is so addictive and *so* fucking cool. It's so
awesome seeing the video: Kim playing pool, Ben smoking, Chris sitting at
the end of the bed, Matt riding the motorcycle. God, they're so calm and
cool. It seems like they don't give a fuck what anyone says bad about them.
They just act themselves and make incredible music. They don't give in to
the whole rock scene and act like people they're not, or sell out. They're
all very handsome and good looking. Yes, I'm a guy and yes, I'm straight,
but so what if I say that? Kim, especially, he has to be the greatest
person. He's so cool, he's got that cool-ass beard and all, he's funny, he
doesn't do stupid shit, he doesn't care what anyone says, he just goes out
and plays guitar like no one else can. What does SP do? Billy shaves his
head and looks so weird They all dress so weird in their videos. Why can't
Smashing Pumpkins be normal about something? Why is every fucking song
about sadness and dreariness? I thought, "Smashing Pumpkins has such good
music. Why can't they put out a decent video? Billy is so confusing. What's
he so upset about and why is everything dark and sad? (Watch the video for
"Zero") Why are they dressed up so weird in the "Tonight Tonight" video?"
It's almost as though I'm sick of SP's attitude towards everything. Why
can't they be happy and funny like Soundgarden? I was listening to the
Modern Rock Live interview, and my God, the boys are so damn funny and
carefree. Who are these fucking journalists saying that Chris' lyrics are
bleak and pessimistic? If you really follow Soundgarden, you can see how
much fun they're having, and by listening to their humor in interviews, and
everything. They get to make music for a living. I would kill for a job
like that. I don't understand it, people have this cultish obsession
following SP. I'm on the SP mailing list, and you should see what real
obsession is, God it's 10 times worse than Shroom's, if you thought she was
bad. I mean, people have posted stuff about their friends committing
suicide over SP's music, and there's even a separate mailing list to post
thoughts and discussion of SP's lyrics. Imagine how depressing that list
must be. SUICIDE! God, it's only music. There's more important things than
music, such as family and friends. Some people base their lives on Billy
and what he says and does, and that's just wrong. I know music is important
to lots of people, including me, and it certainly holds special meaning,
but some people go way beyond the limit. Shroom (sorry, I can't stop
talking about her :-) has a good grip on her love for Chris, and that's
admirable. I don't think she'd commit suicide over Chris or follow him
blindly like a puppet, as people do for Billy. So, I finally decided that
Soundgarden is definitely my favorite band. Don't get me wrong, I don't
hate Smashing Pumpkins. I love Smashing Pumpkins, and always will, but when
I think about the attitudes and the whole attitude toward them, I realize
the greatness of Soundgarden. I mean, just look at this list. We have Seth
(thanks man!) who puts in a countless number of hours on the list and the
web page. The web page is the best on the net, and even the band likes it.
We have list members so devoted to the list, and to contributing stuff for
the web page. We all have our heads on straight, and have our love for
Soundgarden under control, as it should be. Did I resolve my dilemma
properly? Is my reasoning correct? Someone please talk to me by e-mail.
Thanks for listening,

Vasant

1. A local radio station is holding a contest with a prize of seeing
Lolla (and SG) in San Francisco on July 28. I guess that means Laramie,

2. An ad in a local (NE Ohio) freebie rag sez that the Violent Femmes
will be the Special Guest for the July 3 Columbus date (the one I'm going

even Waylon there, it'll be nice to see them again (IMHO.) What I'm
