Yep, this is a good time for those of you who have considered using
the myriad of AOL disks that you get as blanks to actually install the
software and chat with the band using those free trial hours. The new
versions of AOL work with both modems and over TCP/IP connections --
the help file that comes with the software includes instructions for
using TCP.

I just heard that Soundgarden is scheduled to be on Rockline,
Gainesville's Rock 104 radio program, this Monday night in which
callers can call up and talk to the band members. I'm not sure if the rest
of you guys outside of the Northcentral Florida area will be able to hear the
broadcast or not, but i thought i'd let you know. If anybody has a specific
question that they would like me to try to call up and ask for you, please let
me know. I'll do what I can. Of course, if I get too many responses, I
will have to select 1 or 2 and try to get them answered. I make no
promises, but I'll try.

After u install aol, you'll get the sign on screen. Just click on Set up,
then Edit Settings, and there will be a box that says um...crap i forget but
I think it's Carrier. Click on it and it will say stuff like aolnet,
sprinet, ect. Just set it to tcp/ip. Then save it and ur ready 2 go. Oh yeah
set your modem speed to whatever .i'm not sure if it matters, but do it just
in case.

anyways I was thinking...since SG is gonna be on twice in a row, maybe it's
gonna be like Matt and Chris on one day and Kim and Ben on the other day. Or
whatever. And I wonder how temporary those accts for SG will be. Like if we
sent them email, would they have time to read it? Probably not. Knowing how
screwed up aol is, we would probably get TOSed for sending them so much mail.

Subject: An overview

Thought I would take this opportunity to share my views on
Soundgarden with the list people.
I don't think anyone will argue Soundgarden's incredible diversity.
It's like every soundgarden song is unique, and creates its own
genre...zero chance is like mellow jazz, 'Mind Riot' is its own form of
rock, and my personal favorite SG tune, 'Let Me Drown' comes across as a
ball cracking yet smooth metal'edged song.
I know that this branch of my opinion differs from quite a lot of
the list members when I say this, but only the last three CD's are
possessed of this diversity. The early albums are good, but the band has
just grown so much musically sice then. They are good, but sort of
predictable.
This is nothing but my personal opinion; everyone is entitled to one.

okay, i've been through this already, and i'm sorry if it sounds like a lecture:

what most of you need to understand is that in the 70's, kiss was THE shit.
every teenage boy wanted to be in kiss. every teenage boy owned every kiss
record.

kiss *were* cool, and wrote some GREAT rock songs! "Deuce", "Detroit Rock
City", "Rock and Roll All Night" -- i'm sorry, you have to have cotton in
your ears to think that they suck. they were NOT about superficial stuff
- --besides which, they were the FIRST rock band to go out on the road with
the full show -- stage set, lighting, pyro, makeup, costumes. NO ONE had
done that before kiss.

HOWEVER, once we'd moved on a bit and gotten into the 80's, kiss quickly
became an anachronism, and yes, then the music did suck.

Ben of course hates kiss because he is a true punk rocker at heart. All of
us punk rockers hated kiss. ;-)

i say all of this because most of you here simply weren't old enough to
remember kiss in "real time". there's no way you can understand what they
were about because you couldn't see them in context. the music scene has
changed a lot over the years.

i think they don't want to open for kiss for the same reason pearl jam
aren't going to do it -- because the cheapest tickets for this tour are
*$50*, with the best tickets going for $200 -- some seats onstage are going
for $500! it's a total, blatant commercial ripoff and is really not what sg
are about.

i have travelled around the country with people i have met on the net (on
the pearl jam list), gone to shows, gotten tickets for and from, gone out

in my house last summer, traded tapes, sent money to... amongst other
things. the whole reason i joined that mailing list, and now this one, and
others, was to connect with other fans. the information is cool, but i love
being able to exchange email with someone else who... oh never mind. (hi
shroom!)

HOWEVER -- having said all this, i would caution the grrrls on this list to
BE CAREFUL. if you're meeting someone for the first time, do it with a
group and preferably in a public place. you may think you know someone
really well from email... but you may not. talk to them on the phone
first. don't give out your home address if you live by yourself... and all
the normal common sense city survival things.

Personally, I wouldn't want to see SG opening for kiss because it is not
their scene, style, or musical genre, but as I have been reading about this
kiss/soundgarden discussion, one thing keeps popping into my mind. The GNR
92 tour on which Soundgarden opened in whose aftermath I endured listening
to countless Guns and Retarded fans saying how SG was just a wall of noise
with an obnoxious singer and a freaky looking guitarist.
Too this day I still don't understand why SG did the tour. They have little
in common with GnR stylewise (and might I add talentwise) and at that time,
most GnR fans didn't understand SG because they just didn't fit neatly into
that 'metal' category. To say the least, I think that this was a learning
experience for SG and after being dubbed frowngarden by the morons roadieing
for GnR, I think it's quite obvious what kind of time they were having on
the road. Keeping this in mind, I think that there's more of a chance of
having a snowstorm in NY today than there is of SG opening for kiss.

That's my 2 pence.

While I'm not sure what effect double-jointedness may or may not have with Kim,

Could everyone who wanted a video of the sg snl performance and the 120

week at the ye old print shop the last few weeks, and I have only been
emailing on small breaks from work or right before I go to bed and I can't
remember if I have replied to everyone or not. I did manage to clean up
the snl tape but the 120 minute one is still a bit fuzzy, I made a tape of
the AIC unplugged so(audio and video) they both came out great so if
anyone wants a copy of that let me now. Since no tapes have arrived at my
house yet I just assumed that I forgot to get back to everyone. Of course
when I check the mail on my way out to go shopping I will probably find
400 tapes in my mailbox, at any rate better safe than sorry. Hmm... thats
all for now, btw the only thing that could have made that AIC unpluged
better is if Chris had came out and sung Right Turn with Layne and the
    boys.

Excerpt from GUITAR WORLD July 96 feature/interview by Alan de Perna
GW-Early on,Soundgarden toured with overtly metal acts like Skid row
and GnR.What was that like?
Thayil-it was kind of fun

GW-Did you get along with those guys?
Thayil-yeah,I still occasionally see Duff or Slash when I'm in L.A. or
when they're are up here in Seattle."The rest of paragraph deleted for brevity"

Thayil-The reason why we toured with those bands at that point in time was that
there were no bands bigger then us doing what we were doing. If we were going
to take the opportunity to go on a bigger tour,it looked like the only rock
bands out there who were doing well and whom we had any degree of respect
for were GnR and Skid Row.There weren't any Nirvana s or Pearl Jams or
anything. At that point,we were the biggest sort of alternative hard rock
band coming out.Prior to that,we had toured with had toured with bands that
were more suited to us,like Faith No More,Voivoid,Corrosion of Conformity and
Bullet La Volta. But we reach a point where we were able to tour with bigger
bands ,so
we chose to go with GnR.
For a long time, we were very interested in touring with
Metallica,even back then.That's why we're taking this year's Lollapalooza
tour-Not because we were interested .in doing Lollapalooza again, but because
we were interested in touring with Metallica

I often use my left hand thumb to fret a chord.there is a fm7sus4 chord at
the first
position where the A and maybe the D string is muffled.I can't finger this with
the index finger and still muff.the A and D.so I use the Thumb to fret the F
at the
first fret. Also useful for the open G major chord.I picked this technique up
from
watching Jimi Hendrix play Purple Haze,on video.A good guitar player uses
what ever
he can to get the job done.

The movie title is inspired by the line from "Outshined." I don't know who
exactly thought of it, but someone is Hollywood is a SG fan. The movie
should be coming out this year. Courtney Love has a big part in it. I think
she plays a waitress.

I'm sittin here doing a paper for school, listening to DotU through
headphones and I hear a guitar riff under the pre-chorus of
"overfloater", particuraly (sp) in the right channel... and i just
think it sounds really cool.

So far, it seems that the best way to listen to this album is through
head phones... kinda weird, but very cool...

"and another thing"... after lots and lots of listens, it seems that
you people who have the vinyl are lucky. I believe that this is a CD
that would sound better coming through a record player needle.... just
my thoughts.

At the end of the movie, the credits begin, and I think there might be a
different song playing, which ends, and then Blind Dogs begins. The
whole song isn't played though.

Subject: Down under tour?

OK all you Australian types. I was talking to my gf (as I tend
to do) a couple of days ago and she brought forward a little rumour/piece
of gos that if true would be WAY FUCKING KOOL! Basically she heard down
the pipeline that Soundgarden and Pearl Jam might be doing a double headed
tour down here in the next year or so. It does seem a little far
fetched, I know but if anybody could validate this for me, it would lay
my mind to rest. *Looks around to see if he is about to get branded a
heritic* SG is my 3rd fav band behind PJ and the second spot which I keep
vacant in case I've forgotten anyone, so hell...I'll have 5 front row
tickets thanx. The other kool thang about such a gig would be that they
could maybe do a Temple of the Dog set in the middle. *sigh* If only...

Also... one of the faithful posted something about not understanding the
bad reviews for DOTU. Let's face it. Half of the reviewers don't give
the material a real listen. They throw it on once or maybe twice and
spend their listening time wondering how they will phrase the review. SG
also has this amazing talent (IMHO) for writing material that might not
sound too great 1st time around (with notable exceptions: Rusty Cage,
Fell on Black Days, Black Hole Sun) due to its "non commerciality". So if
some reviewer who would much rather be listening to Garth Brooks, CBD or
some other equally woeful performer gets to hear one rendition of something as
deep as DOTU he's gonna write it up as trash. Shit happens.

With regards to SG making a joke at PJ's expense with Boot Camp...
Idon't think so. I think that Chris et al would be above something like
that. Besides, Release & Indifference are excellent tunes w/ great feel
and all that stuff that musicians get into :) If SG was taking the piss
out of PJ then they would also (justifiably IMHO) be laughing at Nirvana
for Something in the Way. I just reckon that they wanted to finish off
the album with some kool ethereal tune but just forgot to make it go for
long enough :)

Anyhows, I got an urge to chow down on some big macs &so4th so happy
listening and tell me about that rumour if you could.

Err... How do you play G chord? Having a flexible thumb can be very
useful for that one, and countless others played in similar manner.

I recall reading about Hendrix that he brought his right thumb around
over the top of the fretboard and played bass notes at the same time as
he was playing chords. I don't think you'd need double-joints to do
that, just long fingers.

I don't think that "Blind Dogs" was played in the course of the movie. I
only heard it in the closing credits. What a great song. I wish SG had
put this song on Superunknown or DOTU because I really don't feel like
purchasing the Basketball Diaries soundtrack album.

I'm still trying to figure out how this converstion about playing guitar

Or someone should just tell them to put a link to the REAL Soundgarden

see how pathetic they are.
