A couple of people have said that SG will be touring on the second leg of the
Kiss tour this summer. I had heard that they weren't going to do it, because
Ben *hates* Kiss. On this, I have to agree with Ben. Kiss seems to be more
about superficial stuff (elaborate costumes and makeup, fireworks on
stage, etc.) than music. People come to concerts to hear music. If your
music is original and well done, it can stand alone. But if your music is
ordinary, average, or even bad, you need a lot of trickery to distract
the audience and keep them from realizing just *how* bad your music really
is.

I will be at lolla on June 27 at longview lake in K.C. MO. Possibly with

Does anyone know what the next single for DOTU will be. I think if
Soundgarden going to go with a slower song, they will go with Burden
in my hand. On the otherhand if they go with something that is on
the heavier side I think they should go with Never the machine
forever or Rhinosaur. Just my opinion.

Actually, You don't in any way use your thumbs to play the guitar (unless
you count picking and strumming) so double jointed thumbs shouldnt affect
his playing in any way.

Ayotte makes drums. Kinda cool, if you go to Ayotte's web site,
http://www.ayottedrums.com/ and go to "Artists who recently purchased
Ayotte products", Matt is first on the list! And it's quite a list.

If this has already been answered, sorry to clog up your mail. By the way,
Kiss used to do a similar thing on all their releases by announcing that
they only used the best: Gibson, Pearl, Etc... It's an easy way for bands
to get stuff for free. After Badmotorfinger came out, some of you may
remember seeing a lot of Peavey ads with SOUNDGARDEN in them. I'm glad
they've switched, but what do you care? Buh-Bye.

Hey there, smartypants, we did know that the new CD, Down on the Upside,
is already out, but we just have not had the chance to update our

Subject: One last sin before im dead

ive been listening to DOTU for more than 2 weeks now and finally decided to
post something about it.
i got into soundgarden with Louder than Love and this album is a lot
different. it has very few of the things that first got me into their music.
theres nothing in it like ugly truth, power trip, hands all over, gun or
slaves & bulldozers, room a thousand years wide from BMF. i miss that stuff.

so this is how it is for me: 1.Badmotorfinger 2.Louder than love
3.Superunknown and Down on the Upside 4.UltramegaOK 5.Screaming Life/Fopp
however, i do think DOTU is a great album, it definitely is among my ten
favourite albums of all time.

Now specifically about DOTU:

+ I love pretty noose, the more i listen to it the more i like it (and it is
getting overplayed on radio around here).

+ Dusty is one my favourites, IMO probably the best of ben's compositions
(including Hater).

+ Ty Cobb is great, the mandolin kicks ass and the hard headed fuck you all
part gives the song the strength i first thought it was lacking of. but
however, i think this song is very far from the heavy and strong "get on the
snake", "face pollution" and even "kickstand".

+ Blow up the Outside World is too Beatlesque for my taste but i seem to
like it more everytime i listen to it.

+ I dont like Never Named at all. Its one of my least favourite soundgarden
songs. i dont like the music, i dont like the lyrics and the vocal melody
annoys me, especially the "im just a baby who looks like a boy" part.

+ Tighter and Tighter is my favourite, great song, it starts a great run on
the album followed by No Attention (it rocks), Switch Opens (magnificently
different), Overfloater (i wanna make it right), An Unkind (this song rocks,
its got kind of a soft feel to it yet its fast and strong) and Boot Camp
(couldnt have ended the album better).

in Overfloater, after the "i wanna make it right" part comes something in
3/4 (am i right here?) and then it comes again. everytime i hear the song,
and being used to soundgarden using odd timing, after the first 3/4 riff i
always expect something like half of it like in 3/8 or maybe 5/8 but the 3/4
part is repeated. i always hum along the part i expect and not what actually
comes. but maybe im not making any sense here since i dont know much about
this 3/4 and x/y stuff.

yeah i noticed that too. also today during a show with nicolas cage on mtv
promoting 'the rock' kennedy said "i used to be obssesed with the drummer of
this band, matt cameron..but not anymore" or something close to that. then
they played Pretty Noose

something that needs to be kept in mind: not every used CD you see in a
store was bought by someone who just didn't like it and then sold it to
recoup some of their investment. many of them were stolen by (mostly
teenage) idiots who refer to themselves as "punk rock" and then sold back to
the same store as used. most of the time the people doing the returning are
not the same people doing the stealing.

a friend of mine manages a record store with an alarm system and he has real
problems getting his employees to pay attention when these people are
around. then same clueless employees don't check the list of stolen items
before buying back the CDs.

why do they do it? in rolla, missouri who knows. probably because it makes
them feel cool and smart. in larger cities it's done mostly to support a
drug habit i believe.

anyway, sorry for the non-SG content but if you see DOTU or any other SG
album in the used rack just remember that it might not be there for the
reasons you think...

something we need to keep in mind: not every CD you see in a used rack was
put there by someone who bought it, didn't like it, and wanted to recoup

here... there's no personality at all. there's no reason in hell for
anyone to ever go to this site. what does he have that you don't?
what do you have that he doesn't? a ton.

i wouldn't be offended... i just can't believe that this dude would be so
arrogant as to post the url here and think that we'd all be impressed.

Subject: feelin minnesota

a book called 'feeling minnesota' caught my eye...as it would all
soundgarden fans...anyways there was a picture of keanu on the cover so i
took a closer look and it turns out there is a movie by this title based
on the book...courtney love is listed as starring in it too..why is it i
have never heard of either the book or the movie? and also, is there a
soundgarden inspiration?

i had heard about this movie too... anyone know the answer here?

The very first time I listened to the CD I did it with headphones and
had the same experience throughout the whole thing. It was one of the
most pleasant experiences I've ever had listening to an album.

I'm a bit surprised at the lousy reviews this album has received. I
know we have to take them with a grain of salt, but that's not the
point. I really think this is a great album, so why is it being panned
so? I think it's important that we all somehow let SG know how much we
like it, whether its through the fan club (I don't know if they
actually see any of the letters and email that goes there) or through
the online and live radio stuff. I feel like we're back in the
Soundgarden Twilight Zone - we love it but the rest of the world hates
it. Truthfully I thought it would be better received.

I had a thought about Boot Camp:
Maybe SG, or just Chris, is poking fun at Pearl Jam, and their habit
of puting long, ethereal songs at the end of their CD's. Boot Camp
certainly has some of the feal of Release and Indifference. But
Boot Camp, as a lot of people have pointed out, seems to quit just as
it gets good, while the PJ songs go on and on, 'til you're tired of
them. It like Chris is saying "This is how it's done, boys". Eh, just
a theory.

I have to agree with Kathie. It seems most of the people I have had
contact with have been great. OK, so I didn't get every tape I was
promised. But overall, most sommsters have been cool. My audio/tape
collection has grown. My poster collection took a GIANT leap forward this
week. And my Soundgarden knowledge is way past Somms 101. Hell, I slept
on a fellow listers couch and I've lived to talk about it!!! If it makes
you feel uncomfortable than don't trust your Mother. But from someone who
has meet two list members already and hope to meet more someday. It has

OH MY GOD... I just listened to the cd with headphones. And when tighter and
tighter came on, and when Chris starts singing, "SLeep tight for me..." heh,
I got drowsy. I think there's some kind of subliminal message in that song.
Cuz I really wanted to fall asleep. Now that song's a lullabye for me.

I checked out the "new" site, and, like Seth mentioned, it is almost
entirely duplicate material. I might have seen a few pictures I have not
seen, although I haven't seen all of the ones on Seth's. (It would take
DAYS at 14.4!) It's not a bad-looking site, but only worth exploring if
you are completely new to Soundgarden. Seth's site could be slightly
overwhelming. :)
I guess the shitty thing about the internet is that people can do
something like this - steal a bunch of material and create a "new" site.
There aren't even any credits on the site in question. At least Seth
acknowledges contributors. I would hate to think that stuff I
contributed to Seth's (our) site was being ripped off and pawned as "new"
or someone else's.
That's what I gotta say. Anyone else?

Hey, what's up Seth, it's Russ (icons)

I got word down here in Atlanta that Soundgarden will be playing a
show here on July 24 (I think that's the date. It is definitely late
in July). It surprises me, because every band is avoiding Atlanta
like the plague, supposedly due to the Olympics this summer :-( ).
They'll be playing a very small arena, it's somewhere in Underground
(if you're not familiar with Atlanta, Underground Atlanta is sort of a
collection of shops, bars, and small showrooms built partly in what
used to be an underground section of Atlanta). Tickets go on sale
Saturday 8 at 10am, and will probably sellout in a few minutes due to
the small size of the arena they will be playing. I've called
Ticketmaster and they confirmed the ticket sale date and priced them
at $25.

See ya later

Russ

anyone. Then again when you're born to a woman as lowly as my mother you'd
understand life as me. It's not that I don't respect anyone here (all though
some folks I don't respect -ahem-). I just cannot & will not trust anyone on
the list unless said person does something to want my trust. I'm not here
for the joy & comradery; I'm here to obtain info on Soundgarden & their
music. Oh, & if anyone wants to trade anything with me, sorry I stopped
doing that. I'll hole-up in my world now, read my mail & not bother y'all

I had something Soundgarden-related to say but I'm too afraid to let anyone

Hey,you got me wrong.I should have put a disclaimer next to that statement.
I wasn't endorsing Mesa/Boogie Amps.I put that in only because the magazine
ad for Mesa boogie amps was advertized as "the best amp in the etc....,the
phrase was stuck in my head as I was typing up a response to somebody's
question about what this stuff was in the album linear notes.

One of my best friends owns a Mesa Boogie combo,It's a terrific rig,
I do not own one my self,I get by with a 60 watt Peavey combo, which I've owned
since 1986,I'm sorry to say I got this amp before I had ever heard of
Soundgarden.
And I say this because I would have been very grateful if I had known about
them back then. The music that kept me sane durning those spandex metal days
was my old
Jimi Hendrixs albums,Stevie Ray Vaughn,and,Cliff Burton's Metallica,Blue Cheer,
Stooges,Rush,and others
Soldano and marshall was not mentioned by because they were not included
in the DOTU linear notes. But,personally,I'll take one of each, give me a Marshall
JCM800.Yeah,some british crunch.i can hear the cops pounding at the door, come
to make me turn it down.Too much money though.

From Kim thayil's feature interview by James Rotondi:GUITAR PLAYER
MAGAZINE,JULY 96

JR-What amps were you using in the studio?
Kim- I used a lot of different amps.I used MESA Dual Rectifiers for leads,
but for rhythms we used a new line of Mesa 50-watt Mavericks,an old Fender
super,a Fender Princeton,Fender Twin Reverbs and Vibro-Kings,and an old Orange
head. There were a couple of pre amp boxes we used for direct stuff,an
Intelitronics
LA-2 and a Summit

the only endorsing of products I've seen soundgarden do are the ads for the
Dunlop
Crybaby Wah pedal.I do believe that when Kim is talking to interviewer about
equipment,he doesn't mention brand names because he got some kind of deal with
a manufacturer. He cares about what kind of tone he is going for and he isn't
going to sacrifice he tone for a few dollars. And,he is not some effects maniac.
who has to channel his guitar through digital computer equipment guitar signal
processors and wall to wall effects.
I'm smart enough to not buy gear by brand x just because my favorite
band is using brand x this year.I've tried playing through Mesa and Fender
amps.Both,have
certain qualities I am interested in but when I make my decision to upgrade
my amp.
It will not be due to the fact that soundgarden DOTU linear notes said buy
this stuff.
One of the first amps I ever owned was a Fender Twin
Reverb.6x10,100watt.fantastic
amp,I wish I still had it.Hey,if Kim wants to endorse products, more power to
him.

Gonzo-who's not happy with his 9 year old morley wah/volume pedal and has
been thinking of trying out a dunlop wah for the past 2 years .
