First, an apology: the Lollapalooza Friend-Finder that's on the
private mailing list page is horribly out-of-date. It doesn't reflect
any changes to the tour schedule that were made since the very first
batch of tentative dates. I jumped the gun when I set that up. Anyway,
is it worth it to update it? I would just have to delete the people
who signed up for dates that are no longer happening. If you think
it's of any real use, I'll fix it tomorrow. Let me know.

Second, more shameless begging: it's summer, I have no classes, and
that means I have plenty of time to devote to the SG page. I want the
site to be 50% larger by the time school starts again in the fall. I
don't know how realistic that is, but we can do it if people help out.
I've currently interested in finding pictures of those ultracool A&M
promo items (a wriggling hand for "Hands All Over," the finger in a
jar for Badmotorfinger, the "Jesus Christ Pose" candles with matching
Badmotorfinger lighters, the Lollapalooza 1992 survival kits, the
Superunknown backpacks, etc.). If you've got any of this stuff, and
could take some pictures of it and send them to me, that would be
excellent. Aside from that, I'm looking for the usual: anything that's
not already on the page. Anything.

For those who are interested in some cool (old, with Jason Everman)
pictures of the band, I added the photos from the "Hands All Over" 10"
to the page the other day (among other things), and the scans came out
surprisingly well. Two of them have slits in them -- this is because
they slide together when the cover folds up.

I've been bored all day today and been up and down the net looking for
interesting SG related stuff to post to the list. Anyways for all you AOL
junkies, Soundgarden are doing 2 online appearences in a row! Yes yes, they
are doing one on June 9th and June 10th. Ok here's the skinny for June 9th's:
Go to keyword: MRL
It's gonna start at 9:30pm EST. And the June 10th appearence Shroom already
gave us details for. I figure they are basically gonna talk about the same
shit on both dates. But this would be a cool chance for us to bug them,
twice in one week! Can't you see Chris now, "Oh shit, it's that Shroom chick
again!" ;-) j/k.

Stella, you are a Goddess!! Thank you thank you, a million times, thank
you!! I would have totally missed this interview, 'cuz technically Sunday is
still part of the weekend!! I checked it out as soon as I got your letter!!
It's interesting... both Rockline and Modern Rock Live are going to have
interviews with SG on consecutive days. THAT doesn't happen very often.

A sad hello to my fellow listers,

Well, here it is June 6, and frankly I think this is my last day on the
list. If I can get all my work done today I'm not coming in tomorrow,
so email after today will be pretty darned hit or miss. UNFORTUNATELY!

I joined in late November, not quite knowing what to expect, but right
from day one, Sethmeister was welcoming, cool, friendly and helpful.
Seth, my man, I can never thank you enough for doing the web page for
our zine! And also thanks to any listers who have given us a try.
We're forging ahead, sort of stuck between coasts right now, but
looking to a future that includes Seattle and more tutaledge from Jeff
Gilbert. Anyway, I found I could always at least get a smile off the
list, if not some cool debates and chances to offer my own 2 cents.
Thanks to all who ever took the time to read my posts. If I ever
stepped on anyone's toes, I apologize, but in a community this size I
think we all run that risk, don't we? Some people understand, some
don't, some don't even attempt, but that's life.

What I'll always hold dear is that I made some really, REALLY cool
friends on this list! Or b/c of the list, and they all say they're
gonna miss me and the instant connection via email. Dear friends, SO
WILL I!!!! But if anyone on the list ever wants to reach me, here's my
P.O. Box--it should be good until at least October, maybe even longer,
depending:

I don't know what else to say except I'm gonna miss you all, when you
argue and flame--hey, we're a family! I'm also going to try like heck
to get a GOOD computer at home this summer so maybe I'll be back before
I'm really expecting to! (Hopehope) Until then, mi ricordero di lei

Hi, I'm newbie Ned and I just want to say that DOTU has made me a worse
driver (I was bad enough after the the other albums!), especially Ty Cobb
and An Unkind. Not to encourage speeding on our highways, but I highly
recommend popping those tunes in the stereo when driving home from 8
long hours of work.

Ladies and gentlemen, I had a moment of enlightment yesterday(well, and
some days ago but now it's all recollected).
I was enlightened with the meanings of 2 songs: Superunknown and Rhinosaur.

Superunknown: It's about the Internet or TV...take a read at those lyrics
with that on mind. =-)

Rhinosaur: Anybody Megadeth's album called "Countdown to extintion??"
Same theme different story. I think it's about the extintion of the
rhinocerous(however you spell that). And the words depict man talking to
the animals...

Comments? Anyone? Don't reply to be 'cause I'll be long gone to home so.

I hope so too. But I think Chris is a pretty moody guy, as he himself
admits, so it would figure that his lyrics would be moody too. I just
think they are probably more personal than he lets on in interviews,
whether they are from actual experience or just feelings he has.

Subject: DOTU and Lollapalooza

Hello Everyone,
This is my first post since joining the list over a month ago. First
of all, I have to say that I bought both the vinyl and the digipack
version of the CD of DOTU, and they're great. DOTU may possibly be their
best album to date (I do own all of their albums). By the way, for those
of you who are keeping track, the only version of the CD I have seen down
here in Florida is the digipack. My favs on the album include Blow Up The
Outside World, Zero Chance, and Dusty.
I wonder how anyone could not like this album, but while I was at a
local used CD store yesterday, I saw 2 used copies for sale. What are
these people thinking? I can't see how a Soundgarden fan wouldn't like
this album.
One quick question for anybody who might know. I heard on the radio
that Lollapalooza is coming to Jacksonville on July 21st, but
ticketmaster online has yet to list that date, and the official
Lollapalooza page has that date as unconfirmed. Does anybody know what's
the deal with this? If so, please email me or post an response. Thanks
                                        Jason

Two days ago I had the chance to listen to DOTU (I'll have to wait

in the US since it's a bit cheaper there).
Anyway, while I was listening to DOTU I was a little bit tired so I
just closed my eyes for a while. When BUTOW came on I started to have this
very weird experience... I don't know I just felt I was going somewhere far
away from the record store I was... totally cool. Has anyone else had some

wait was really worth it!

Got my copy of SPIN mag. last night.. Again great pictures of SG,
love the front cover and the one of Chris on page 41- i.e., "Leader of
the Pack" - damn the SG men are beautiful. They make the most
incredible emotional music and they have this look that just says
"We're here, if you don't like it tough shit". There is a 1989
picture of Chris that you should have for the Web page Seth.. Caption
on it is "Jailbait", he could be doing a Calvin Kline Ad..

I will now read the article, I have savoring the pictures... Sorry
I'm a visual person, frustrated artist, I love pictures (mostly B/W)
that show close up the soul of a person. The picture on pp 41, is
done in mutated colors and as you look at it you want to know what
Chris is thinking, where his mind is going. You just get sucked in by
the imagery of it....

Maybe it's just because I too want to get "far away from here"! i wish it

Applebite is probably the perfect song to put you in a trance, just don't

Blow Up The Outside World is just perfect when you wish that everything but

I know that the Ramones have been threatening to call it quits for awhile, so

Okay, I did listen to DOTU on the headphones for the first time and
did notice a few things that I did not before. Such as in Ty Cobb, in the
lyric booklet it says:
I got the glass, I got the steel
I got the love to hate
but listening to it in the phones it sounds like Chris is saying I got
everything instead of I got the love to hate.
I also noticed that no attention seems like it's in a rush. It just
sems that it should be a slower song or something. I don't know, maybe I'm
paying too much attention to the songs details instead of just listening and
enjoying the great SG songs.
At the beginning of Boot Camp there is definately a voice saying
some stuff. I have no idea what it is saying though, the only word I could
make out was school.
So far my favorite song off the album is overfloater, my least
favorite is applebite. I just don't understand applebite, can someone tell
me why they like it? It just seems like it is the second coming of 665->667
or something, except less satanic. Also, what the hell are the Mesa Boogie,
Ayotte, Zildjian, Vic Firth, Remo and Ernie Ball? It says a line to buy
this stuff at the bottom of the very last page in the booklet. But I
wouldn't buy them, because then I'd being trendy, right Shroom? Okay,
that's all I have to say for now.

While I agree that we need to be careful I think you miss out on alot
in life if you become so fearful of others that you become afraid to
take any risks. Sometimes things work out great, other times you get
screwed, but you always learn and grow. When I first started playing
on the internet, and I mean within probably a week, I had my password
stolen simply out of my own stupidity (it had nothing to do with
trust, more with inexperience) so I have gotten much more careful
about the internet in general. This list, however, is an anomaly in my
opinion, at least as far as the people I have had the pleasure of
communicating with personally. It is weird that you would trust
someone you don't know, and maybe those of us who do are foolish, but
the reality is I do trust the people on the list. I generally operate
on intuition, and so far it just feels right.

Subject: conventional wisdom...

hey all...prepare to dwell in my dementia... :)

is anyone here familiar with newsweek magazine??? well, they have
this segment in there called "conventional wisdom" where they pick an
issue and give "ups" or "downs" to different aspects or people
involved with this issue...y'know, like the issue is "decision '96"
and each candidate would get an "up" or "down" based on the
direction that his "stock" is going in the whole shebang...

well...(sg content, here i come...)

after uncountable listens to dotu, i've decided to share my
"conventional wisdom" about each track on the record...meaning, which
songs are consistently growing on me with each listen, which ones are
losing some of their appeal, etc...here goes...

"BIG, HARD, WICKED RISING UPS"

- - ty cobb: it took a while for this to really have an impact, but WOW.
sure, it's a simple little tune, but i haven't heard this much
dead-on aggressive power since the ramones. and that
chorus...hard-hitting (and headed) and sinfully hummable, all at
  once.

- - burden in my hand: sure, it's probably the catchiest, most
accessible song on the album. that doesn't keep it from being one
of my instant all-time fave sg tunes. SERIOUSLY. check ben's bass on
the first few bars of the chorus for evidence of this man's
  emergence as a PLAYER.

- - tighter and tighter: what can you say? tight slides on the
instrumentation and some of the finest vocal hooks
ever written with "sleep tight for me" and "hope it's a sweet ride"

- - overfloater: infectious. from a whisper to gorgeous harmonies to a
gut-wrenching screamable chorus. all layered over a low-down, almost
motown groove. what more could you ask for?

- - boot camp: god, what a song. fun with the phaser. and how 'bout that
teaser of an ending??? just when you're about ready to get angry
that such an emotionally powerful song is so short, you realize that
the emotion has increased tenfold BECAUSE OF the abrupt ending and
the instant feeling of isolation. cc is a true genius.

"UP"

- - never the machine forever: thayil breaks out. an exercise in
rhythmic variation but almost TOO much so...a difficult song to listen
to but one that i'm POSITIVE will have lasting appeal, for me
  anyway...

- - zero chance: beautiful song. a tear-jerker. if there were a little
more variation in dynamics and possibly a little less reliance on
cc's vocals (let's face it...without chris' pipes this song would be
slightly above average at best) it would be top tier.

- - applebite: i don't know what it is about this song, but it just
gives me shivers. no, there's not much too it, but it just has a
spooky mood to it (fantastic processing on cc's vocals just tops it
  off...it wouldn't sound right with intelligible lyrics. :) )

"EVENS"

- - pretty noose: maybe because i've heard it more than the rest. a
great "sloppy-sounding" song, and one that was obviously recorded
with that goal in mind. again, a good (not superb) song that doesn't
particularly showcase the band's talents but that will surely have
  lasting appeal.

- - dusty: hater is in tha house. kind of funky, but i just don't
particularly get into this one. definitely different and a stretch for
the full-band sg arrangement, though, and that's nice to see. (i can
see this one growing on me more in the future...just like the ENTIRE
  hater album)

- - blow up the outside world: i liked this one a lot at first, but it
kind of leveled off after that. definitely a solid track and
probably a good bet for a single release after "burden," but a bit
  too predictable for my tastes.

- - no attention: i didn't like this one at all at first, but it's kind
of grown on me. a bit pretentious on the lyrics, mr. cornell, but
i'll forgive you... :) i like the "slow-down" at the end.

- - an unkind: kind of a spastic song, but not a bad track. a powerful
chorus makes up for so-so verses on this one.

"DOWNS"

- - never named: i know, a lot of listers will gasp at this one...but
i'm sorry. yeah, it's a fun little punky song, but i just can't
get into it. it's kind of a "what you see is what you get" song and
i just don't get anything new out of it with each listen.

- - rhinosaur: not a bad song, mind you, but similar in nature to "never
named"...simple and easy to listen to, but almost to a fault. and it
might help if i could picture anyone but ozzy osborne singing over
that main riff... (paranoid, anyone???) :) and let's not forget
kim's first lead break straight off "monsters of metal"...

- - switch opens: i'll have to agree with the lister who said (quite a
while ago) that this is just too "un-soundgarden" of a song. too
light and wispy for me to get into, and not much variation in power
  and dynamics.

above all, a damn fine record. i can honestly see all of the "even"
and above tracks sticking in my head for the rest of my life...the
"downs" i don't think i'll ever really get into.

i'll stick with my assessment that this is sg's second-best effort
behind badmotorfinger...better than ltl and superunk, imho.

oh well, i've wasted too much space. bye.

I agree with Mr. Champagne. Pink Floyd definitely comes to mind when I
hear Boot Camp. When people started talking about Sting I had to go
back and listen with him in mind but Pink Floyd it is.

First off, lemme just say this.

You talk about Metallica on a Metallica mailing list. You talk about SG on
SOMMS.

That said, does anybody know whether, on "Half", Ben is singing in his real
voice or falsetto? I don't think it's his real voice, because I've heard
his speaking voice, and it's pretty low. Why the hell did he sing so high
for that song? Oh well, I guess bassists in SG have a history of bad
singing, e.g "Circle of Power" :-)

Worth my time? On the contrary, I am truly offended by the new site.
You have ripped off everything that I and many other Soundgarden fans
have worked for TWO YEARS to compile. You have not ONE THING that you
came up with on your own. There is NO REASON to have more Soundgarden
sites. All it does is duplicate effort unnecessarily and create more
confusion for Soundgarden fans when looking for Net resources. I had
hoped that people would realize we're all working together on the
Unofficial SG page and that they wouldn't create new sites for no
reason.

If you're just duplicating what we've already done, what's the point?
I've gone through a ton of negotiation with other people to ensure
that none of us work on the same things, that we all work together to
create one comprehensive site. Look at Yahoo: do you want the
Soundgarden category to wind up looking like the Nirvana category?

I'm sorry if you thought my opinion would be different, and I'm sorry
if I've offended anyone with this message, but think about what you're
doing. I consider Soundgarden fans to be an intelligent breed, a group
that understands that the only way to accomplish a goal is to work
together on it. This "new" Soundgarden site goes completely against
that.

Offended,

Right!! Avoid trend at all costs!! Trend is evil. Trend will be the

Subject: That new SG site
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

Just want to clarify what really pisses me off about the new site:
it's not the fact that there's another site -- it's the fact that it
provides nothing new, and aside from providing nothing new, every
single image -- *every* one -- on this "new" site was taken from the
unofficial and official SG pages. Back when the official page was
first created, sure it was kind of a shock to see a new Soundgarden
site all of a sudden, but at least they use all of their own material
-- they don't rip off stuff we've done, and all of their images are
entirely unique.

But with this new site, and a few others I've seen, people claim to
have created a brand new Soundgarden site when in reality they've
borrowed a shitload of images from us and added some shadows to them.
That's not "creating," that's stealing.

Between all the people that have contributed to the unofficial
Soundgarden project, there are easily more than a thousand hours of
work put into it, and it's not fair to all the people that put in that
work to portray our efforts as their own. Perhaps I feel a bit more
attached to the SG page than most, and that's why I'm so easily
offended by stuff like this. Believe me when I tell you I've devoted
more time to it than I've devoted to anything else I've ever done
(we're talking hundreds upon hundreds of hours here), and for some
reason, I'm determined to work on it until I can do no more. I know
that I don't want my work being ripped off.

Whatever, fuck it, enough outpouring.
