Subject: new Soundgarden

I am new to the group, but have been listening to Soundgarden since
'90. I have been listening to DOTU several times a day since it came
out and is to me their best album yet. The album puts you on a
rollercoaster ride filled with emotion and energy. The whole album
comes off with a great vibe and I love it. In my opinion, what makes
Soundgarden one of the best bands out there is that they continually
get better. Each album improves with new diversity and new ground
musically. I always thought it kind of sucked when a bands first few
albums are considered there best. It means the band has already
peaked and that it. With Soundgarden, there peak seems to be far
away.

Subject: Pretty Noose video review

This is a review of the Pretty Noose video from Entertainment Weekly.

It had to happen. Alterna-rock finally has a sexist video to call
its own. While the PC-pumped grunge revolution vowed to forever
banish frat house drooling from its clips, director Frank Kozik
brings it back in full leer. He sets part of this clip in a porn
palace, focusing on a writhing stripper sporting devil horns, no less.
If Kozick sold the band on irony, they got rooked. He could've
hawked this junk to Whitesnake. GRADE: C

Kind of a crappy review. What does he know, this is the same guy who
gave the new Cure video a B.

My personal grade: B+

Mushrooms? Did someone say mushrooms? ;) Puh-leeze... what kind of

described my last 5 boyfriends.

I wonder if this stuff ever gets back to Chris? I wonder if he'd get a
kick out of it? I wonder what kind of drugs this guy is on, 'cuz I want
some, and Nothingman probably will, too.

Ok... on to the other stuff...

I heard the exact same thing. Metallica (who I couldn't care less
about) has DICtated most of the Lolla locations. What kind of sorry bastards
are they, anyway? And what the hell is up with that new video? Did they
start taking make-up lessons from Dave Navarro, or what? Idiots. And
there's one guy in it (don't ask me names, I'm NOTNOTNOT a Metallica fan) who
looks like he's trying to be a Chris Cornell/Dave Navarro mix. Can't say I
really blame him, though.

In the article that was in the Chicago Sun-Times, this was mentioned:

>Cornell, who writes the majority of the band's lyrics, has admitted that
>sometimes his songs are nothing more than just arbitrary words that sound
>good together. But that hasn't stopped fans and critics from analyzing the
>band's music, which is often bleak and chilling.

Nothing more than arbitrary words that sound good together? When did
Chris 'admit' that?!? I'm sorry, but this 'news' (if it's true) has come as
a disappointment to me. Somehow it seems to belittle all the emotion I feel
has been put into the lyrics. Can someone please tell me which songs are
just words thrown together? I'd like to know if I'm over-analyzing this
stuff. Or perhaps the paranoia is back? Hmmm...

And that article in a Florida paper...

>and put them in the middle of a media frenzy where even such
>trivialities as singer Chris Cornell's hair
>length were popular topics of discussion.

Excuse me?!? Since when has Chris' hair become trivial?!? ;)

Superunknown was a poppier album than any other SG tuneage out there!!!
Yah, ok... flame me for this!! I DON'T CARE!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Hey ya,

Everyone in Aust. watch the footy? Well all of QLD and NSW I guess. Anyway
anyone catch the half-time break? As it came back into the footy, the nice
sounds of pretty noose came streaming out of the TV :) COOL :) Was rather
suprised, that it got picked up so quick on TV. I think someone in TV land
is a SG freak, cause how many shows use the music. I think we had this
descusion earlier (Sports tonight uses them heaps) sounded good watching
the slowmo of the big hits. Oh well that's all for today, cause QLD lost and
well the ref needs some help :)

Well, everything seems to have died down over the last few days so
I guess it's safe to write again. I took the advice given to me and the
last few days I've been perusing the sg net pages and I have to admit
that I've learnt all sorts new about sg. I never actually realised I knew
so little about sg, and had never considered myself to be a 'new' fan of
the band, which I obviously am, basically because up until now I'd never
really had the chance to interact with other sg fans. There is of course
nothing wrong with being a new fan, the point has been made that it
doesn't matter when you get into sg, just being into them is what's
important.
I was amused by the reaction to my flaming though, to be honest it
didn't bother me at all and I won't be demanding some sort of an apology.
With hindsight I know it wasn't the greatest contribution to the mailing
list, ( I can't believe I called Applebite Snakebite, I guess it was some
sort of Freudian slip ) but the flaming was still unjustified. Anyway
thanks for all the useful replies to ' What's Missing', I'll be trying to
get my hands on the early sg stuff from now on.

I tend to agree with you on your reasons for liking the electric version over
the acoustic version. I too, love the solo part where ALL the band members
are going off on their own.....I don't, however, like the electric version
over the acoustic version mainly because I appreciate the naturalness(sp?) of
the ring of the 12-string guitars. Also, after listening to Seasons, it's
nice to hear Chris do a song without any electically enhanced effects....
One more thing.....I HOPE they perform Like Suicide(acoustic) in concert one
of these days.....I've NEVER heard of the band doing a completely acoustic
song before.

My thoughts.

Some things about the band are almost as unbelievable as the museum.
First, Yamamoto is finishing his M.S. in Physical Chemistry at Western
Washington University in Bellingham. And in Roth's spare time, he has
been writing songs with his mentor Jim Carroll - their use is as yet
unknown. Finally, and most astonishing, are Pickerel's unbelievable
outlets. For example, the fact that as a kid he played drums at church
("My church rocked," he emphasizes). Or that this plainly-dressed guy
collects wacky outfits ("We're gonna invent our own style, man," Roth
kiddingly drawls). Or that he owns a record store, Rodeo Records, in
Ellensburg, Washington, that he keeps running even while he's on the
road.

I was flicking through the latest Australian edition of Who Weekly as I
usually do, back to front. First thing that struck me was the Hitlist
section, where listed is the top TV Programs, Films, Books and Albums for
Australia. And sure enough, there at number one for the week ending June 2,
Down on the Upside reached Number One in Australia with a bullet..."Great!"
I thought. "Australians are finally getting some decent taste in music
(despite George Michael's latest effort (Older) being at number two...blerk!!)"

So then I head to the reviews section (Picks & Pans - SONG), and I'll show
you what I was so disappointed to read:

- ------------------------------------------------------------

(Australian) Who Weekly, June 10 1996.

* Down on the Upside

Soundgarden

Apart from being Seattle residents, Soundgarden's membership in the grunge
club was always a strange one. They pre-dated the movement by years, and
they've always dwelled on the more metallic side of town, anyway. Now that
no-one wants to be associated with the g-word, Soundgarden are scrabbling
around all over the place.

Down on the Upside is basically a weaker twin brother to 1994's sprawling
Superunknown. There are brooding riff-fests to the left and lurching howlers
to the right, with Chris Cornell yowling such lines as "eat the fruit and
kiss the snake goodnight" and "standing with my enemies hung on my horns".
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this sound like regular metal?
Meanwhile there's the one where they sound just like Pearl Jam ("Zero
Chance") and another ("Blow Up the Outside World") that shamelessly repeats
the psychedelics of their own previous hit,"Black Hole Sun".

Fortunately, there is some respite, and it comes in the unlikely forms of
"Ty Cobb" and "Never Named", speedy blur of songs where Soundgarden are more
like a nervy garage band than pompous metalheads. This 'Garden needs some
weeding.

Grade: C+

- -------------------------------------------------------------

Ouch, that smarted! A weaker twin brother to Superunknown? Copying Pearl
Jam? Copying themselves? A grade of C+?!?!? That means Who reckons the album
is as poor as Leslie Nielson's latest film, Spy Hard!!!!

Ah well, people have different tastes, I s'pose...

Subject: SG fans Vs. the world

Hey All-

First off, I know there's some albums that are strictly for
only die hard fans of a certain group. Good example of
this may be "Some old Bullshit" from the Beastie Boys.
Some albums like these are so mediocre(sp?) that only
die hard fans should only take interest.

Other albums seem to be gems waiting to be discovered with
repeat listenings. Its looking like 'Down on the Upside' is
one of these. Why is it only SOundgarden fans can only seriously
dig this album? Why is it only Soundgarden fans can appreciate
the depthness of 'Down on the Upside'? I refuse to believe that
we're a bunch of mindless capitalistic lemmings that will swarm
to buy anything a band puts out(granted some do exist in the
Soundgarden relm :) ).

I'm just waiting for the year in review issues for all of these
magazines to come out. By that time, 'Down on the Upside' will
sink in further to their consciousness. Right now, the album is
still too new for me. I need to have it in my tape deck constantly
for a couple of weeks. Soundgarden is in their right relm though.
Maybe this album will be only appreciated by the fan base, if that's
the truth, I say let the truth speak for itself :)

The pits will be alive this summer, and you can bet when material
from 'Down on the Upside' and 'Louder Than Love' starts playing,
SOundgarden fans needn't worry that any false pink boys will
be in the pits, they will only be occupied by the true fan base!

what material from dotu does everyone think will translate well
to a live situation? soundgarden sometimes surprise me by playing songs
that I wouldn't have thought would go down well (mind riot, for instance.
but don't fear, I've changed my view on that) and then don't play songs
that I thought would be great (limo wreck and fourth of july). I imagine
that pretty noose and blow up the outside world will get many airings,
but as for the other 14 songs, who would know? possibly rhinosaur? maybe
overfloater or never the machine (tough one to play live)? what do you
all think? what would you like to hear?

friend and I were contemplating making a sign that said mind riot to hold
up at lollapalooza in the hopes that the band would play it. On the other
hand, I was thinking I could try to get to the front and yell it to the
band. Which approach, if either, do you guys think would work best?

Also, I had this weird dream last night. I think shroom's getting to me,
because I dreamt that Eddie Vedder was my roommate (not that shroom
necessarily likes eddie vedder, but she does seem to dream about band
members a lot). I was trying to be cool to eddie and not bug him about
how I liked his music. But I do remember asking him if he knew the
soundgarden guys and if they were cool.
Ah well, it was just a dream, but it was neat knowing someone famous that
I admire, even if only for a night.

WHAT THE FUCK? Fuckin Entertainment Weekly...they know dick. I'm sure
they'd prefer it if they just put vid clips of Hootie under the music instead
of doing something INTERESTING like the PN vid is. I admit that I wasn't
impressed by it at first, but everytime you see it, it gets better. And
when were there naked women? Did I miss this part? DAMN! I ALWAYS MISS THE
GOOD PARTS!
Seriously, though, comparing to a Whitesnake video is harsh. Showing a
devil girl
for a couple times(symbolizing a PN, I think) and having Tawney Kittan
stripping and doing splits on the hood of a car the whole damn video are two
radically different things.
That's all. I hate Entertainment Weekly anyway. Everytime I read their
music columns, I get pissed.

Not really. Black hole Sun had that psychedlic feel, yes, but "BUtOW" Has this

here on the mailing list, some of us are worried about two things that seem
to conflict with each other:

1)People jumping on the bandwagon upon hearing the new album
2)Reviewers and colleagues trashing the new album

Well, what do we want here? It seems some of us have to find that middle
ground,
where you can say, "Yeah, I hope the new SG album is well received, but
hopefully the people who buy it will fully appreciate it."
As compared to Superunknown, I think there will be more people who buy this
album
as their first or second SG album and love it to death. Maybe that's what
they were (indirectly) trying to do by making the album more experimental
and noisier.

Subject: Review of "Pretty Noose" Video

Here's a really shitty interview of the video for "Pretty Noose", from this
week's Entertainment Weekly, June 7, 1996

"It had to happen. Alterna-rock finally has a sexist video to call its own.
While the PC-pumped grunge revolution vowed to forever banish frat house
drooling from its clips, director Frank Kozik brings it back in full leer.
He sets part of this clip in a porn palace, focusing on a writhing stripper
sporting devil horns, no less. If Kozick [sic] sold the band on irony, they
got rooked. He could've hawked this junk to Whitesnake."

Grade: C

First, they should learn to fucking spell Mr. Kozik's name properly. Also,
to compare Soundgarden to Whitesnake is just, well, I'm so pissed I can't
even say "FUCK!" enough times!

In the same column, the same reviewer reviewed "Mother Mother" by Tracy
Bonham. He gave that an A!! Give me a fucking break; that whole video is
just her on a fucking TV set. I could probably make a better video by
myself. God, these reviewers really piss me off.

BTW, if there's any Metallica fans out there, in the same magazine, the
review of the new CD "Load" has this to say:

"The latest Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins albums are more bristling and
savage than 'Load'."

Pissed and trying to pay no attention,

Vasant

yeah, then we can give them a subtle hint about it in the AOL interview and see
if there are any lurkers on here <hey :)>
Lets see if Chris mentions it. :)
and just like the beattles, the new Chris is a look-alike... and Soundgarden
could start giving hints about Chris being dead in their music too :)

I imagine this is their best attempt at panning dotu. I myself
would have been very suspicious of any article related to soundgarden
contained within the trashy pages of who weekly (a tabloid with colour
photos). chris cornell howling? I'm sure that which ever genius it was
who decided to write that prefers the more classy sounds of michael
bolton and other such hair/cabaret acts. if he/she had read further than
track 2 in the liner, they would have realised that there are actually
more (and better/not out of context) lyrics on the album.

and this reviewer needs his/her head examined. zero chance sounds
like pearl jam? I'd like to see jack irons try and drum with the same
subtlety (eleven toes equals boring drumming). and comparing blow up to
bhs is laughable at best. bhs was probably the only single the reviewer
bought, and along with his/her pearl jam albums, the comparison was
obvious. does who weekly have an email address jackhammer?

onto more pleasant matters (but not sg related), you would be
doing yourself a favour if you go out and buy 1. _dust_, the new
screaming trees album; and 2. the alice in chains _unplugged_ cd. I've
heard great things about both albums (admittedly, from the respective
homepages), but sweet oblivion by the trees was fantastic, and the
unplugged performance by aic is supposed to be one of the best ever
(sweet relief after that (imho) last dodgy effort).

Thanks to the people who wrote to me to tell me what somms were.. I feel
really stupid because I actually read about them but didn't make the
connection between the abbreviation and the word.. The old brain is
sometimes a little slow.
Anyway, now that I'm enlightened: I have two of the songs off of somms
(well, at least one place on the internet said they were songs off of
somms) that I got on the Jesus Christ Pose (songs: Jesus Christ Pose, Stray
Cat Blues, Into the Void (sealth), and Somewhere) single.. I paid $2 for
it. If anyone who's on this mailing list lives near Edmonton, Alberta,
Canada, I'd suggest going to Sonix (on Whyte Ave). They have lots of (used)
rare stuff for pretty cheap..
Also, I was wondering.. Are Ultramega OK and the Flower EP worth the money?
They're pretty expensive.
