Imagine this... a candle, inside of a glass, I am lay down on my bed, I have
my candle in my hand, the fan's air makes the flame dance, while you're hear
LOOSLEY OR TIGHTLY, EVERYTHING FITS... I'm watching the flame, now is
turning color blue...GROW AND DECAY, GROW AND DECAY...it extinguished
now...IT'S ONLY FOREVER.

I don't need any kind of drugs to bring peace to my mind,God SOUNDGARDEN is

I think if they think PN is "ugly and confusing" that they're going to
have a hard time getting into Soundgarden as a whole. PN is nothing
compared to Beyond the Wheel or Slaves and Bulldozers to just name two
classics. SG are notorious for ambiguous lyrics and more
unconventional imagery and tunings.
My suggestion is, don't try to force people to like something they
obviously don't have a taste for. I know its hard when you're
enthusiastic about something other people just don't seem to
understand. I struggled with that for years before I found this list.
Believe me, you can't convert some people. And don't ever make excuses
for Soundgarden. Everyone doesn't have to like them - they don't
compromise why should you. Why would you want people to think SG is
"radio friendly" anyway? My favorite songs are almost always the least
radio friendly and I would sure miss that if SG were to sell out.
Just my thoughts - I'm feeling a little bitchy tonight.

Yeah, I saw them in 90 when they toured with Danzig and several thrash
metal bands. They really didn't seem to fit in and the crowd, at least
where I saw them, didn't appreciate them (lots of people with dyed
black hair and black makeup). I thought SG kicked ass, though. It was
the first time I saw them live and I was willing to suffer through
anything. We didn't stay for Danzig, though.

I don't know if I agree that Pretty Noose is the "cleanest" song SG has
ever done, but I do agree that it probably was the best song to debut on
the radio. Granted, it's not as radio friendly as BUTOW, but PN contains
many of the elements that uniquely identify Soundgarden. I mean, you've
got Kim's unusual guitar tunings, the odd breaks, and Chris sings with
more than enough rage to disturb the masses. Yeah, PN may be somewhat
contrived, but A&M probably wouldn't be thrilled if SG wrote a song that
only appealed to the members of SOMMS and their closest friends. (No
offense Seth, 500 members is kick-ass for a mailing list. But A&M is
probably looking for numbers more like 500,000+) Oh well, my $0.02...

Hey all,

Does anyone else notice the continuity of certain types of songs, especially
on the last three albums..?.Face Pollution, Kickstand, Ty Cobb...etc, etc...
The only problem I have with the new one is that I don't see a song as
hard-hitting as Slaves and Bulldozers or Limo Wreck. Sure, BUTOW and Tighter
and Tighter are pretty strong, but Chris ain't doing his usual screaming! Are
we gonna see any more Slaves and Bull. type songs or Limo W.'s anymore?

As for the Great moments in SG...(Great thread idea!)

1. Let Me Drown....that muffled guitar part when he sings,"heal my wound
                    without a trace...."
2. Slaves and Bulldozers.....Chris hitting the high note in the second "Bleed
your heart out" chorus...gives me goosebumps every time!
3. Chris' low muttering intro to Like Suicide
4. Limo Wreck....very last line that Chris screams out
5. TDITTL.....the emotional "should have stayed in bed!" part....powerful.
6. The catchy riffs to Fresh Tendrils and Rhinosaur---Go MATT!
7. Somewhere....THE ultimate love song.
8. Live version of SWMGEC....solo Chris on "stop your trying to bruise my
                    mind"
9. Riff to "Dusty"
10. Ty Cobb "hard-headed..FUCK YOU ALL!"

That's all!(that I can remember)

I was noticing a similarity between superunknown and DOTU yesterday. At
the end of Head Down, there's that little sort of drum melee. To me, it
always meant the advent of the spacey guitar of Black Hole Sun (which I
maintain is a fantastic song). Likewise, on DOTU, there's sort of a
similar little drum thing that ends No Attention leading perfectly into
the similar Switch Opens. My friend Ryan thinks this is a subconcious
act on the band's part. I'm still not sure. Even if it is a formula
they've discovered, I think it works brilliantly. Life's all about
anticipation and they induce it masterfully.

Well, let's see. If there are 500 people now, and we average about 40

generate 40,000 posts per day. I don't think I would want to compile

Credit where credit is due: I didn't write the wordsearch applet (I

Almost right Clown.. I have been immersed in painting my apartment,
selling the house in PA and work, work, work. But on an up note - I have
been wearing out my DOTU tape on the drives between Washington and PA. I'm
at the point now that when I wake in the morning "PN" or "Overfloater" is
running through my head.

I have one question... When I started reading my mail (over 300 now), I
kept seeing talk about jewel case/digipaks - people keep asking about the
value, number and such - but I see no answers. Seth, Steven help...
Someone said the digipak was 60,000 only - hell most of them must be in PA
(Pennsylvania to you good people out side of the USA). Ever store I walked
into had dozens of them. And I haven't see a jewel case yet...

I have a digipak which is fine, I tend to do major damage to jewel cases.
Besides the digipak are like small album covers - since DOTU is so "70est"
it should be in a cardboard cover (love vinyl).

Jamie

BTW: The Tragically Hip's new CD "Trouble at the Henhouse" is also out on
digipak.

No, Kathie, I agree with you that DOTU is a far better record than
SuperUnknown. SU was (and still is) a great record, but "IMHO" it was very
commercial record.

DOTU is music for the sole purpose of music. I don't feel SG wants to
please anyone but themselves on this record. There are so many influences
from bands that influences SG, that it just seems they wanted to do the
stuff they liked. It's certainly the music I like and did like. Rhinosaur
takes me back to a day long gone. Zero Chance, Tighter & Tighter and
Dusty are pure rock'n'roll.

But I must say "Overfloater" has become my number one pick on this record.
I love it's mood, I love the control in Chris's voice and I love the way it
builds. From the first slow, deep, and soulful "I wanna make it right", to
the last "I'm overfloating alone" the band takes you on a ride you just
don't want to come off of..

> If this makes sense to anyone let me know. Also, does anyone have any
> idea what Overfloater is about? I love the song, but don't have a clue
> what he's trying to say.
> Kathie

We agree again Kathie, as I said before "overfloater" is my favorite on
this record. What's it about is right, I feel most people would say drugs
"Feel medicine heal the lines of age", "I'm here and now I'm gone", or
"Hold the potion up". But he could be talking about hiding from life
"Close the door and pull the shades" or "Remember to forget and then rename
your shame".

What ever he is talking about you know it's not good and he is on this
journey alone. I just know I love the sound of Chris's voice on this cut -
he has control and uses it correctly...

I loved your post and I agree with you 100%. Thats why I get pissed
when we get into flame wars because people can't just let other people
say what they want. Its one thing to disagree with somebody, but its
entirely different to discount their feeling as being stupid or wrong.
Of course the person on the receiving end needs to be less sensitive
too I guess. I've developed a thick skin over the few months I've been

I think it took alot of thought and guts to post your feelings. I

A couple of months back, I was walking through Tower Records and found a BMF
and Superunknown packaged together in some "special" release. Has anyone
else seen this? Was it some sort of limited release? Seeing as I already
had both albums and there didn't seem to be anything else of unique value, I
didn't drop the $50+ for it. Maybe I should go back and try to find it...

Subject: PUCK of the RW III and SG Posters

I've been swamped at work so I haven't read the digest in a while, yet
now that I have I am a bit surprise at how many people thought PUCK was
"cool". Everyone I know , who watched the show, thought he was an
asshole. I
thought he was a filthy, inconsiderate, arrogant, manipulative individual
myself. Just because he was into the 'alternative' scene and he dug cool
music didn't make him a bit more appealing. An at the end of the show
when they kicked him out and he kept calling leaving angry messages I
just thought he was sad. Just because one speaks his mind, doesn't stop
him from being an asshole.

Now for the my latest SG adventure...the Virgin Megastore near my place
was giving away a Free promotional poster with the new DOTU cd. So
naturally I had to have one. The only problem was I already had the cd
and vinyl. "Not a problem," I said to myself. The newest Pantera (Great
Southern Trendkill) was out so I decided to buy another copy of DOTU, get
the poster, and return the cd for Pantera. Yet, out of sheer kindness
and greed, in the following days I ended up buying 3 more copies of DOTU.
I gave 2 posters away to friends and I have 1 poster on my wall and the
other rolled up for collection purposes. I always thought you had to
have a diverse taste in music in order to be a hardcore SG fan and now I
have proof...from my week of SG gluttony I acquired not only 4 SG posters, but
also:

Pantera : The Great Southern Trendkill
Elvis Costello: All This Useless Beauty
Victor Jara: COMP. (a chilean singer/songwriter martyred in the 70's)
Barry White: The best of...

Oh, yes I did!!

I love music, and life ain't that bad either!!!!

I went to the mall tonight with my friend Juustin to walk around and
look at Soundgarden paraphenalia:) Well, I foudn a new shirt.. I know
its new cause it said 1996 on it.. It had the Ultramega OK logo thinge
on it (the thing that looks like an S and a G and an L7 and God knows
what else) in red and it said "Soundgarden" across that like it does on
the Pretty Noose single, only it was one word instead of two, all in red
and gold on the front breast of a white shirt. And the back had
the silhouettes of the band in black. I'm really pining for this
shirt.. along with the new RATM one, cause it's nifty and it says "Fear
is your only god" on the back.. But anyway, I also lookde for DOTU in
the jewel case. I went to Record Town, Sam Goody and Tape World, and
each store had about twenty or thirty copies of DOTU out in digipak. I
have concluded that that limited edition thing is bullshit, unless
someone fucked up and sent all the digipaks to Guilderland NY:) Which I
doubt:) Maybe I should mail the fan clube again eh? Sounds like a
fairly smart thing to do. Oh yeah and speaking of Sam Goody I walked in
and heard a familiar song and was very pleased to recognise it as
"Tighter & Tighter" :) We stayed there for the rest of the album, and
it was at Sam Goody that I saw the new Soundgarden shirt so if you
really want one (I want this shirt dammit) you might be able to find it
there.

ALTERNATIVE GARDEN GROWS

Fierce-Sounding Quartet Keeps Rock Stardom in Perspective

By Jae-Ha Kim

Ask Kim Thayil why his band, Soundgarden, rarely smiles in photos or in
videos, and he'll answer, "We're not perky boys."
That's the understatement of the year.
Anyone who has ever heard the group's songs will never mistake the four-man
band from Seattle for the wispy lads in Take That.
Soundgarden's thick, dense music helped create Seattle's "grunge" scene.
Though they preceded Nirvana and Pearl Jam onto that scene, the musicians
watched as their colleagues earned fame and fortune, patiently waiting for
their time to come.
That time came in 1991-seven years after Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto
(who quit in 1990) formed Soundgarden. "Badmotorfinger" went platinum that
year. In 1994, "Superunknown" sold 5 million copies and, for its encore,
won a couple of Grammys.
On Soundgarden's latest CD "Down on the Upside," which hits stores Tuesday,
fans will hear a stunning collection of songs that comes as close as you'll
get to capturing the group's hard-rocking live shows without actually
having to step into an arena. (See related story for CD review.)
And arenas are where Soundgarden play now. They're one of the featured
headliners on this year's Lollapalooza tour, making them the only act to
have been featured twice on the alternative music fest since its 1991
inception-first in 1992 and again this summer.
They're also one of the reasons why Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell
(formerly of Jane's Addiction and currently in Porno for Pyros)
disassociated himself from the festival. Farrell said that having bands
like them and headliner Metallica on the bill took away from the
alternative spirit upon which the fest was founded.
"I think it's silly for affluent American white guys to worry about this
contrived polarity between metal and alternative music," Thayil said,
phoning from his Seattle home.
"I think both these forms share more of the same spirit in terms of its
demographics than, say, reggae or jazz or classical or various Euro techno
music."
Thayil and Soundgarden have learned about the dangers of labeling music the
hard way. Once stuck in musical purgatory-where their record company
preferred to promote them under the more popular "heavy metal" tag, as
opposed to the relatively new category of "alternative"-they were at times
shunned by metal and alternative fnas, who deemed them either sellouts or
uncool.
But they persevered. Eventually, their videos worked their way onto MTV,
though not in heavy rotation. They were most often played on MTV's metal
show "Headbangers Ball" and, ironically enough, its alternative show "120
Minutes."
"When we started out, there wasn't a successful alternative market," Thayil
said. "The record companies perceived all the money being in heavy metal,
so they called us metal, and we cringed at the term back then. We really
identified ourselves more with the underground or college scene that was
going on then."
Genre notwithstanding, the musicians have come into their own as artists
and as superstars.
Unlike Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, who never seemed
to enjoy that status, Thayil, singer-guitarist Chris Cornell, drummer Matt
Cameron and bassist Ben Shepherd appear to be comfortable with fame.
Though their multi-platinum sales have made them wealthy men (they own
rights to publishing and merchandising), the musicians keep themselves on
an $1,100 per month allowance.
Obviously, they don't have to worry about making ends meet anymore, but
Thayil said they were used to living on so little for so long that they
don't find extravagant lifestyles a necessity or particularly desirable.
Thayil's intelligence and wry wit belie his quirky, long-haired looks
("I've had long hair since I was 10," he swore. "I always got it cut around
school picture time, though.") While his band is definitely the Seattle
kind, Thayil is quick to point out that he grew up in suburban Park Forest,
where he attended Rich East High School.
"I was on the debate team there my sophomore year," said the articulate
musician. "It was me and another long-haired kid. We weren't any good, but
we were funny. We had some weird debates."
Thayil spent 1 & 1/2 years studying liberal arts at the University of
Illinois at Chicago before transferring to the University of Washington,
where he earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy.
"I took a lot of biology and chemistry my freshman year and sort of weaved
into literature, philosophy, and psychology," he said, taking long drags on
his cigarette that were audible over the phone lines. "I really liked the
whole process of psychology, but I realized how weak it was as a major."
Asked what Thayil the former psych student would make of a song like
"Pretty Noose," the first single from their new CD, he laughed.
"I guess songs could work as pop psychology," he said. "Sure, I can see it
as being a surrogate Oprah."
Cornell, who writes the majority of the band's lyrics, has admitted that
sometimes his songs are nothing more than just arbitrary words that sound
good together. But that hasn't stopped fans and critics from analyzing the
band's music, which is often bleak and chilling.
One of their best songs from the new album, the Stooges-esque "Ty Cobb,"
will never make it on American radio because of the "f" word being an
integral part of the song.
"The funny thing about it is we met the German representative for our
record company, and he is dead set on having 'Ty Cobb' be the second or
third single in Germany," Thayil said. "I said, 'In spite of the lyrical
content?' And he said, 'What the hell! I really don't understand why it's
1996 and people worry about lyrical content, especially in a country like
the U.S. It's like the days when people were so bugged out about [the
supposedly suggestive] lyrics to 'Louie Louie.' It seems so archaic."
Taking another long drag on his cigarette, Thayil pondered a more pleasant
subject.
"Hey, do you like baseball?" he asked. "I can name the lineup for the '69 Cubs."
And he did.

REVIEW

UPSIDE FAVORS LIVE SIDE OF BAND

Soundgarden, "Down on the Upside" (A&M) *** out of ****

All it took Soundgarden to capture the recorded sound it had always wanted
was to nix the producer. Guitarist Kim Thayil and singer Chris Cornell have
stated that if their past efforts had any faults, it was that they sounded
too clean. While their latest effort,"Down on the Upside"-in stores
Tuesday-isn't exactly full of superfluous noise, it's the closest the band
has come to capturing its vibrant live spirit. (Adam Kasper is credited
with co-producing the album, but Thayil said he worked more as an adviser
than a hands-on producer.)
A group that found mainstream fame via the power ballads "Black Hole Sun"
and "Fell on Black Days," Soundgarden's latest effort doesn't have as
obvious a hit on it. The closest is the first single "Pretty Noose," which
beautifully showcases Cornell's controlled wails. The 16-song, 66 minute CD
is an ambitious effort where the songs have a cohesive groove to them,
right down to the bleak outlook all the musicians seem to share. Though
Cornell is the primary lyricist, all four members contributed tracks.
Soundgarden's genius isn't in its intricate guitar work or even in
Cornell's tortured tenor, but rather in its ability to mesh somber lyrics
with music that is surprisingly uplifting and catchy, while also being raw
and dirty. "Ty Cobb" goes from a gentle mandolin intro into a playfully
obscene chorus. And "Rhinosaur" sounds like it could serve as this year's
Lollapalooza theme. It seems to take stabs at rock stars and the throngs
that idolize them: "I play, I'm sick and tame/Drawing the hordes I wait/And
show the lame the meaning of harm."

I like it when band's do little intros to songs, much like the
ones before switch opens and head down (is it a coincidence that these
two are written by ben?). it makes the song sound a bit more *there*,
like on the _songs from the superunk_ cd where the tune-up before fobd is
left on the cd. to me, that stuff sounds cool, and shows that the band is
not afraid to change things up a bit. I wouldn't want to hear the band
do it on every song, but it's cool now and again.

Nope, it's nothing special. I think it's called the Supermotorfinger
boxed set. I think it was a way of ppl to buy Super and Motor, if they
didn't already own them. Bit more cash to A&M in otherwords. it's not a
bad deal if you didn't already own the records, tho $50 is a bit steep.
Was going for $34 or something down here at one stage. I think they have
basically sold out now, so that may be why it is expensive, trying to
pass it off as a limited edition thing. Doesn't have anything new except
for the carboard box.

Hey Glenn, you and I seem to have "connected" in some of the reasons we =
like some Soundgarden songs.

Rusty Cage is my favourite song (amongst many many others, but I will =

like it for the same reason Glenn said here:
4) the intro of "Rusty Cage", and the slow, off the wall break in the =

the song;

Oh boy, it's good to be back!! Ah, I love Soundgarden!! :-)

Also, I love as Glenn does:
      3) the riff in "Gun", which moves from a slow, vaguely interesting =
pattern to an=20
infectiously fast cresendo;

And I like at the end how it goes back to being slow like at the start.

5) the slow break in "Slaves & Bulldozers", just after the solo, when =

sings in his amazing lower register;

That IS my all-time favourite part of any Soundgarden song - I know CC =
has great upper vocal range, but I still prefer to hear his lower range =
- - only wish he'd do it more often!

and the nutty tones of "Drawing Flies";

Glenn knows I love that one! :-)

12) "Limo Wreck" and "4th of July", arguably two of the strongest songs =
the band has ever composed;

Agreed.

17) "Blow Up the Outside World", as the listener is shoved headfirst, =
grinning=20
all the way, into the chorus;

Definitely - an amazingly brilliant song, like so many of the others on =
DOTU.

I would add to Glenn's list:
"Uncovered", the quirky deep vocals and great guitar choppiness (palm =
muting, right guys??);
"Pretty Noose", at the very end when CC drops to a lower key to sing the =
last two lines - as I wrote above I wish he'd sing in a low range more =
often;
"Dusty", firstly the brief drum opening, secondly the cool soft vocals, =
and thirdly the wonderful way the drums mix in with the acoustic guitar =
strumming during each verse;
"Ty Cobb", the sweet opening light guitar melody followed by full-on =
hard rock - thrashy and fast and powerul and GREAT!!;
"Burden In My Hand", the vocals (again) - how does CC manage to sing =
high and yet still so powerful? - this song is my favourite from DOTU. =
I LOVE that it opens slowly, and then Matt does that great drum roll, =
and it turns into a full-blown simply wonderful song - and what =
fantastic lyrics this one has;
"Never Named", the way the song starts immediately - no mucking around - =
and I especially love the sections that follow each chorus (the first =
one is about 1min 30secs after the start), and it's so cool that the =
song ends the way it began - abruptly with no messing around.

Well.. thanks for reading that. :)> =20

Same goes for me!

Cheers all,
Carolyn the Murky Foal
