I noticed today that my copy also has the tiny print which reads" For
Promo use only. Not for sale ...blah blah blah..." My discs do say "disc

mentioned a while back that he/she had a copy that was a radio station

I had originally responded to Ray's post and agreed with him that his
copy of BMF/SOMMS was a hybrid, but I take it back. After reading
Geoff's response, I looked at mine and SOMMS does indeed have "For
Promotional Use Only - Not For Sale" printed in it. I bought it new,
so I imagine all copies must be like this...

Subject: hype!

hi everyone,

tonight i saw the seattle premiere (and the first *public* screening) of the
documentary called "hype!"... some of you may have read about it, it got
some press when it debuted at the sundance film festival cuz eddie showed up
for the screening and played at the party with the fastbacks. anyway --
they showed it tonight as part of the seattle international film festival
and i have to say that it was *GREAT*! finally, a movie about seattle that
talked about the scene as it really is and all the great great bands that
are here that most people never hear about -- the fastbacks, the young fresh
fellows, seven year bitch, gashuffer, tad, screaming trees, etc.

of course, the 'bigger' bands are mentioned (and the point of this post of
course) -- kim and matt are interviewed quite frequently during the film,
and there's some live footage from the 94 tour (not from seattle, however).
kim and matt mostly talk about fame, and the price of fame, and getting big,
and what it means, and how most of the bands just got together to play music
because it was fun, and suddenly, they became "big".

susan silver is also interviewed several times, articulate as usual, talking
about how her office at one point refused to answer questions like "what is
the grunge scene REALLY like?", and how the only thing that really disgusted
her in the whole media hype was the "grunge goes vogue" fashion spreads.
(i'd have to agree)

the sg live footage shows a gorgeous chris, sweaty and bathed in blue light
(that' was for you, shroomy). number was 'searching with my good eye
closed'... *excellent* sound and for once the sound at a rock movie was
actually LOUD enough! it was really one of the most intense parts of the film.

jack endino was interviewed, talking about working with the band, recording
"nothing to say" and how HEAVY they were and how he just couldn't believe
how intense they sounded

also, charles peterson (the sub pop photog) was interviewed a few times,
showed some gorgeous early pix i hadn't seen of the band.

finally, they also had *film footage* from the self-pollution radio
broadcast, nice to see the inside of pj's studio, showed snippets of sg
walking around, along with pj and krist novoselic... some very poignant,
well-spoken interview footage of eddie as well...

the bad news is, they have no distribution deal domestically, as the
'seattle scene' is considered 'old news'... which is too bad, because it has
a wider, larger message as well. the good news is, there *will* be a
soundtrack on sub pop... what will be on it exactly is still up in the area
and contingent on what kind of distribution they (finally) get.

if this movie plays in your area -- larger cities with rep houses, keep your
eyes peeled! -- it is an absolute must-see for any sg fan for any local
people, they are showing it again june 6 at midnight, but it may be sold out
already -- we got on line *45* minutes before it started (and this is after
buying tickets the second day they went on sale, about two weeks in
advance!) and the line was already huge. this is the reason that i can't
tell you if anyone interesting was there, because the best seats left by the
time we got in were in the front row -- i forgot my glasses, so i couldn't
sit further back...

the last thing i'll mention is the absolute RUSH i got when they went into
the sg footage -- i suddenly remembered how i felt seeing them for the first
time two years ago. *sigh* which means i'll be at the gorge...

'night

OK, this is it. I've been quiet about this, but now I've got to speak
out. Limo Wreck, you're exactly right. I can't stand all these people
that are like "I was watching MTV for 8 hours straight and then I saw
Soundgarden! Oh No! Are they becoming mainstream?" If you fucks are so
against being mainstream, then why do watch MTV at all? The only time I
watch MTV is to take aadvantage of them (ie when the bands I like come
out with a new album and suddenly become "cool") If you see a Fugees
video and think Fugees suck, why watch it and say "this video sucks" why
not change the damn channel.
I will undoubtedly be flamed till my dying day for this post. Oh, well.
(Some of this was a personal attack at some of you members of the list,
some of it was just bitching about what too many people I know do.)
Thanks.

I also think the 'newbie' welcome was extremely rude I am from
Britain and was fortunate enough to be from an area with several good
record shops and in the BMF era managed to buy just about everything that
in my eyes was worth having I am one of the British people to have somms
or the singles club 7" but my point is most British people are no where
near as lucky. When I visit a town I have not been to before I often check
out the local record stores and to call the SG situation bleak is an
understatement I am sure some of you can appreciate this but some of you
are lucky too and probably completely missed this. In answer to the
Motorvision question it is worth having but you should be able to get it
for less than 10 quid I have seen it in HMV sales for 7.99 so hold out if
you can and it is significantly more than a tenner. Assuming the
Bangor in your email address is the one in North Wales the SG situation
is dire the nearest place to find SG stuff is Manchester or Dublin!

i don't have any of my six-strings in front of me at the moment, but i
do believe that could be something like thayil's little intro to one of
the breaks in "my wave." i think it's about 2/3 into the song, right before
ben goes beserk on a descending bass progression...i think i remember playing
that in standard tuning on the b string with a bend similar to
that...

like this... (normally i don't work with TAB, but i'll make an
exception... :) )

(b string) ---2-4b-4---2-2-2-4b-4---

...could be wrong, like i said i'm just guessing (like always :) )

Cornell's sexy body. I wish I had a CD JUST of Chris' vocal tracks. That

Don't get me wrong... I do love the music. But my favorite intrument in the
band is Chris' voice. So maybe someday (after I win the lottery, of course)
I can buy copies of the dats of Chris' vocals. Would that be possible?
Sorry, I'm music industry ignorant. So shoot me. I think Burden is one of
the best songs on the album, 'cuz his vocals just shine through. Am I

i'll be the first to agree here...(even though it's not hip to agree
with jc since he beat up a "newbie..." :) oh well, i can see both
sides of that issue and i'll deal with that some other time)

anyway, i was telling my girlfriend the same thing a few days ago.
superunknown is regarded in many circles as one of the finest rock
masterpieces of all time. i would definitely agree that it is a great
album, but like jeremy said, there are definitely skippable tracks on
it. oddly enough, i find myself doing the exact same thing...starting
with "black days" and playing through until "spoonman," which i skip.
after that, i play up to and skip "kickstand," then to "half," also
skipped, and finish out the record.

i don't always do this, mind you, because i have always been a firm
believer in the fact that truly great albums are put together with a
sense of continuity in mind...each song is placed in a certain
position for a certain reason. the album that pops in my mind here is
"dirt" by aic. that album (one of my all-time faves, btw) was
considered to be a "drug record," documenting the trials, tribulations
and successes of a user. (the band even stated this in numerous
interviews) the original version of the album came out with songs in a
particular order, but later versions were changed because it
apparently was not the order that aic wanted. (i think "down in a
whole" was moved, and maybe one other song)

anyway, i also agree that dotu is a virtually unskippable album. i
think "no attention" is the only track that i've found myself saying
"eh...that's ok." the rest are masterpieces. (strangely enough, i
understand that "no attention" was going to be on badmotorfinger...see
following paragraph to see why i consider this strange...)

as for other sg albums, i think badmotorfinger is still the king of
unskippability (coming soon to a dictionary near you :) ). there
isn't a track on that album that i can skip without later bursting
into tears of guilt and rushing back to skip back to it.

well, i'm getting weird, so i'm getting this mother gone... :)

Subject: rankings...week 1

well, i've been listening to dotu for a full week now, so it's time
for the inevitable comparison to other sg masterworks...here's my
assessment...

GROTE'S SG RANKINGS, STARDATE 1 WEEK A.D. (<A>fter <D>own on the upside) :)

1. Badmotorfinger
2. Down on the Upside
3. Superunknown
4. Louder than Love
5. Ultramega OK
6. Screaming Life/Fopp

3 & 4 are virtually interchangable...i had a lot of trouble making a
decision there, but my utter hatred for ties forced me to bite the
bullet and choose.

i'm basing my rankings on the overall quality of the album and how all
of the songs complement each other as well as how good each tune is
individually. i honestly can't skip tracks on badmotor and dotu (not
yet on this one, anyway), while i can pick out ones i can do without
on the others. NOT MANY, mind you, but it is possible.

keep in mind that being number six on a sg list still means that you
are well ahead of any competitor from virtually all other bands on the
face of the planet. (although sugar and morphine could definitely bump
their way in there) :)

comments??? (as if i have to ask) :)

Where has this obsession over "bandwagon" jumpers come from?
Does it matter that someone got into sg relatively recently? Is there a
certain cut-off point where a fan is classed as a "newbie bandwagon
hopper". Where does it come? What's the criteria for being a "proper"
fan? Must you have all the albums? Was there a certain date which
you must have been a fan of sg by?

It's really quite sad that you can think of yourselves as being so
superior for the mere fact that you discovered sg earlier than someone
else. I myself didn't start listening to sg until about 1993. AND, shock
horror, I don't have ultramega ok!!!!!! Should I be publicly struck down
as a non-believer?

Why don't you all show a little tolerance. This sort of musical
snobbery is hardly productive or interesting. This list was set up to
discuss sg and their music, not to flame people out of some sense of
superiority. Shouldn't you be happy that more people will get into sg as
a result of their new album?

"eat the fruit
and kiss the snake goodnight"

okay, my question is, who is he talking to/about?
if we accept that this is a reference to the garden of eden, then we have
a few choices. i'm going to assume that it's not adam, since the song is
clearly about a woman.
so, i wonder, is chris referring to eve... which kind of makes sense, i
mean, christian theology for years tried to blame eve for the downfall of
mankind as we know it...
or is he talking about Lilith?
Lilith was adam's first wife, myth says she was even created *before*
adam, and that she refused to obey the Guy Upstairs (which is why he got
rid of her and created eve).
I'd like to think that that's who chris is referring to. though I think
he'd like lilith a hell of a lot more than eve -- she's my personal
patron goddess (lilith i mean) -- and much more fun, but also much more
likely to fit the description of the woman referred to in 'PN'.

am i the only looney to have thought about this?

Seeing the various reactions to the "flame the newbie" post, I can't

Hi there. I've been reading all these reviews and everything and I'm
sorta getting a bit jacked of all the negative things said about
DOTU. I'm also tired of people comparing Soundgarden's songs to other
bands like Zep, Sabbath, Floyd and even Pearl Jam. I mean, in the album
Soundgarden sounds like Soundgarden, and whilst there are some parts
that sound a bit similar to other bands (Rhino, Dusty, BUTOW), big deal?
I think that poor old Kim has had enough of defending the band about
sounding Zepplinish. As for that tosser Dave who rubbished DOTU, what
a dickhead! Cornell's lyrics are as good as ever and Zero Chance,
BUTOW and Overfloater are ever so skilful. And giving crap to
Ultramega and LTL are hits way below the belt. I'm trying to avoid
magazine reviews etc. now as they keep influxing negative vibes about the
album which really aren't warranted. It is one of the most diverse
and brilliant albums I have heard. I think that everyone should just
stay off the reviews and get out of the album what we want, screw
what other people think! Soundgarden rule!

Has anybody got a grasp on what Burden In My Hand is about? It is
such a great song because I'm getting different ideas about it with
every listen. At times I think that he has killed his girlfriend 'I
shot my love today would you cry for me', or is wanting to 'And kill
everything you love', he feels helpless that he is obsessed with a
girl and feels helpless that he wont have a chance with her 'Cause
fear is strong and love's for everyone who isn't me', and other times
sounds optimisic,'Oh no there she goes, Out in the sunshine the sun
is mine'. I don't know if I am being a bit literal or what but it
would be interesting to hear a few people's view about it. The song
is just so cool (as they all are come to mention it). Bootcamp
deserves so much discussion, it is such a thought provoking song and
is depressing in the style only Chris can do. At the end of the song
I think it sounds like that he is so sad that he can't continue the
song, and if he did the song would lose it's whole effect. The ending
gives you almost a feeling of loss and it actually hurts to listen
to. End of my analysis anyhow.

Hando, where's this video? Where abouts in Melbourne is it and are
there any left, can you copy it blah blah blah etc. Please write so I
might be able to get my fix. Also has anyone seen SOMMS in Australia?
Can you get it? Where? Etc. Thanks dudes. Oh well, I'll be off now, I
hope I didn't waste anyone's time with my thoughts.

Adios!,

i'd have to agree here. it is possible that list old-timers get tired
of hearing the same questions from "newbies," but i think that it's
important that everyone help each other out. if someone new asks for
recommendations on which sg album to buy next, either answer the
question seriously or keep quiet. if you give an honest answer, and
the person goes out and buys something on your recommendation, there's
a good chance he or she will come back and bring a new, unique
perspective on the music to the list. there's no point in telling
"newbies" to get lost, because this list is not intended to be an
exclusive, if-you-didn't-see-sg-live-in-1986-you-don't-belong-here
club.

and chris, the list has 500+ members now. :)

yep, the scans are great. jean didn't want to part with the hunger
strike 7" though. :) by the way, if anyone has cool sg stuff that you
don't see on the unofficial web page and you could scan it and send me

Subject: who else will get mad at me?

OK peoplez (well.. not all of you), Yeah.. I've come under fire of
late for attackin a "newbie". I will try to explain myself a little
w/o being too vague. When eMpTyV started playing "black hole sun".. it
was cool. Soundgarden was getting some recognition... but then, it
became the frat-boy-"Mr. Cool"-"that song is sooo cool" song of the
year due to eMpTyV spitting it out every hour (and radio too).

It pissed me off because they became known for playing that song. The
song lost depth and meaning as far as I am concerned. Soundgarden has
too much damn talent to be known for one song (especially that one).
With all the over play that "black hole sun" received, Soundgarden was
still not givin credit as a GREAT band with other GREAT albums, even
though they did win a Grammy, Soundgarden thought it was a fluke. Do
you know how many times people have told me that they want to get
their first album.. "yeah, it's called 'badmotorfinger' i think...".
That's what pisses me off. Even the corporate music industry ignores
them for the most part (thank God).

When I saw Soundgarden on the last tour, it was in Charlotte. That had
to be the lamest crowd ever. I think the only song they recognized was
"black hole sun".. but what could i do, all i had was my balcony seat
while i watched people walk around on the floor, in and out... DURING
THE CONCERT!!

I guess that's what I'm trying to say.... By Soundgarden getting so
famous, it saturated the music a little.

This is all i'm going to say for now... if you have a question, email
me privately.. and for God's sake, stop posting the messages to this
list about the newbie gettin flamed by "someone".. here I am, send the
complaints to ME.

Course, we all know this will happen when they release "burden in my
hand" Maybe they won't even do a video. Or it will be so awesome, that
the eMpTyV drones won't like it.

maybe i should start my own hate-mail-mailing list :)

Heh. I was just imagining something similar - the lyrics to No Attention
really suit a child. Think of a young kid covering their ears and
shaking their head back and forth, shrieking "I can't hear you I can't
hear you I'LL PAY NO ATTENTION NO ATTENTION NO ATTENTION..." Yes, Mr
Cornell will be responsible for a new burst of temper tantrums across
the world. Let's sue him.

On the subject of lyrics, are there more religious references in these
songs than on previous albums? Anyone want to do a word count?! Off the
top of my head there is the temptation of Eden and the attached Fall in
at least 3 songs alone: Dirty Noose and Applebite... and Ben's An
Unkind. The way Chris employs this imagery to illuminate other things
rather than the pieces being *about* the Bible tales is great, though I
personally would like him to explore some other mythologies.

Imagine him as some warped nineteenth century side-burned preacher - "we
are entering a time of the black days, the evil false warmth of Satan's
black hole sun is pouring down upon us, watch for the vipers and poison
snakes of the dark one and the liars who pose as Our Lord Jesus Christ...."

speaking of kim, I have a friend who gave me a really bad review
of dotu (not you seth, and not you gil). he said the reason he didn't
like the record was because kim didn't write very much of the music. I
didn't want to agree at first, but I was reading through most of the liner
notes for their previous albums last night while staving off some
ridiculous assignment, and its true; kim had very little to do with the
creative process (outside the studio, at any rate) during dotu's
formation. he could have been trying to focus only on what he was
personally going to play on each track or something, I suppose.

would the record have been better if kim had written more? I'm
guessing that it would be. we know that he can write *great* music (new
damage, hands all over, flower, incessant mace, etc), so where are all his
songs? is he saving something for a solo album? I'm beginning to think
that dotu doesn't really stand up to their last two albums, and it might
be because kim seems to have clammed up. the two most innovative songs on
the record (imho) are applebite (I know its not by kim) and ntmf, and I
think the album deserved more of kim's input.

while I'm on this ramble, I also find this album pretty different
to superunk, bmf and ltl in that most of the songs are written in some
kind of autonomous fashion; ie. someone writes the music, and then someone
writes the lyrics. on earlier albums, you would have songs that were
written by most or all of the *band*, jesus christ pose and limo wreck
being excellent examples. but on dotu everything seems to be...unilateral
or something, not a band process. you could argue that they just don't
credit it all on the dotu liner, but they used to on all their other
records, so why stop now? I think that the greatest of the band's
strengths is their total *bandness* (or maybe their tonal-emotion), where
they all write songs and they all play their asses off. most importantly,
they do it *together*. dotu seems to me to be removed from that a little.

just something I was thinking about :)

yeah, I would think all copies of somms would be like that.
this may be a horrible analogy, but here you can buy a bag of potato
chips that has ten small and separate bags inside. on each of these is a
warning: 'not for resale'. so badmotorfinger/somms is like a big
ten-pack of chips :) I believe the producers do this so that the store
can't sell them as seperate items, thus making huge profits on something
that was supposed to be sold as a package. if you split up bmf/somms,
you would have two cds to sell, or at least one cd and an ep.

actually, on the .au files I just sent to seth, that very exchange takes

be very serious about something he says off the cuff.

As far as My Wave, nothing screams freedom more than that guitar solo
near the end. It's way to covered by the rythm part. My friend Ryan and I
used to argue which was better: TDITTL or My Wave. I tried to convince
him that My Wave was better because it's about individuality that
succeeds, whereas TDITTL is about failure. I have come to learn to love
both songs and now enjoy TDITTL even more than MW, if only for its
greater aural attractiveness. The video also aided my appreciation for
the song. On the other hand, the MW video isn't too good in my opinion
(sorry Henry), except for the parts with the kids on the bikes.

Yes it is because Chris said that, that makes me think EVE and the apple =

Ok first thing I can't believe how low people are putting Superunknown.
It' s a great album and the only song i skip is Half (It is still longer
then most albums so i excuse that), and even that is changing.
Second I can't believe how high Ultramega OK is, Chris can't sing yet,
wail loudly yes, sing no (check out how much better Beyond the Wheel is
live now then on record).
I think that Soundgarden has progressively got better as performers and
writers with each album hence.

1	Superunkown	It has so many of my Fav Soundgarden songs that
			it has to be first
2	DOTUS Still growing on me may be higher in a month or so

3	Badmotorfinger This is what metal should sound like. AND METAL
			IS GOOD!!
4	LTL Chris' singing anoys me sometimes in this one
			big improvement in quality
5	SL/FOPP More fun then Ultramega

6	Ultramega OK	Have this on tape but i don't want to get the CD
because it is not worth it.

only thing that's prompting me to do this is that I've been

what I consider Soundgarden "classics"...

- - Overfloater
- - Burden In My Hand
- - Tighter and Tighter
- - Like Suicide

- - Slaves and Bulldozers
- - Outshined
- - Hands All Over
- - Loud Love

Hey All-
Ok, this is my selection, MIND YOU! that this is always
subject to change, it just depends on my mood...

1-Louder Than Love-I picked it up in 1989, it made me burn
every damn White Lion, WInger, Crue album I had. As a whole,
it still rings out loud and powerful. Its a masterpiece,
probably the best heavy metal album I have ever heard.

2-Superunknown-DOTU is gaining quickly. But songs like 'Like
Suicide' and 'Mailman' get deep, deep inside my head.
Sure I don't act on em, but its such a strong album lyrically.
And 'Fresh Tendrils' has a great guitar riff not to mention
lyrics like "Give me little bits of more than I can take"

3-DOTU-Its rising quickly. 'Ty Cobb' is becoming the 'Head
Like a Hole' of my life's soundtrack. Just the sound of 'Switch
Opens' made my chest feel heavy. Applebite will also be
an underrated gem.

4-Badmotor-Sorry, I was a bit let down after LTL changed my
life. It grew on to me though. 'Mind Riot' and 'Searching
with my good eye' are still kick ass songs.

Well, that's it, feel free to flambe or respond in kind.

Well, they still are, ya know, Kim _is_ the guitarist. He's Asian-Indian.
Yeah, there's confusion about the proper terms for oriental/asian/indian,

What's up with these digipaks? Are they any more valuable or special than

How much should I pay for the Flower EP? Is it worth getting, just for "Toy

Yeah, Chris Nickson falls into the trap of becoming what he thinks he
writes about. "New Metal Crown" was obviously a chance to cash in quickly
on a hot band. He wrote up an extended faq, had a nice package made and
chuckled all the way to the bank. Too bad his work wallows in mediocrity.

It struck me tonight that the song Zero Chance may be about Andy Wood.
It was the verse:"I'm thinking of your highness and crying long upon
