i actually just emailed the fucker who runs this site today to thank
him for taking credit for stuff he borrowed from our unofficial page.
if you take a look, you'll see what i mean. he even copied the lyrics

are jeremy and i the only ones who sit around and seek out soundgarden

It is evident to me that Dave here is having an emotional breakdown himself
and he can't accept reality. I have one suggestion for Dave, "Pull your head
out of your ass, get a grip, find professional help, and banish yourself to
oldies music, 'cause everybody's always happy in oldies music." Well, maybe 4
suggestions there. "After years of making mediocre records that were at once
tinny AND muddy, Soundgarden (on 1994's Superunknown and the just-released
Down on the
Upside) finally jelled as a unit in the studio." What in the hell is this boy
talking about? Mediocre? Soundgarden has always been one step ahead of the
pack. I think it is clear that Little Dave here has been lagging behind in
mediocracy himself, and wouldn't know what good music is if it bit him on his
tight ass. Even SG's earliest work is far from tiny. But how could you say
that Badmotorfinger is tiny? TINY? FAR FROM IT! Maybe we should just all send
Davie a little note telling him where he can shove his article and offer
suggestions for a more suitable line of work. Up his ass and migratory worker
come to my mind. I think I should stop now, I'm getting really pissed and am
having homicidal tendencies.

Trying to stay sane,

P.S. I agree, stupid people should not breed. I say we castrate Dave and send
the band his tiny and muddy jewels after we stomp all over them!!!

From: "Matthew Lawrence" <mattlaw@cogs.susx.ac.uk>

Since everyone else has had a say on this, I think it's time for mine..

Quite frankly I'm sick to death of reviewers who have a problem with
Soundgarden being miserable.. The first review I ever read had
something in it about "Earth to Hard Rock music: There's more to life
than being loud and serious" that really fucked me off. Typical for a
british magazine, they seem to want every band to be chirpy and happy
all the time like fucking Blur.. He's obviously got a problem with
Chris' lyrics that stops him seeing how truly great they are, even if
they can be depressing. Take Boot Camp (again) depressing lyrics, but
absolutely beautiful at the same time "Like babies on display or
angels in a cage". And where did he get that thing about fame? I'm
guessing he found it implicit in Never Named, which is another song
with really excellent lyrics.. Maybe this guy could do with reading
the lyric sheet again and trying to see past his first impressions..
Another thing.. Where the fuck does Dusty fit in with his opinions?
The SG song with the most positive lyrics and he writes the album off
as too negative.. Well DUH! As for tinny, I could maybe take his point
for Screaming Life/FOPP and possibly even Ultramega, but certainly not
ANY of the others.. WHat does tinniness say about a band? Does it say
they lack talent or lack money? *scratch chin* hmmm... Tricky.

There are a lot of points he made which were pretty fair, but it
wasn't fair to criticise the lyrics just because they weren't in a
style the reviewer appreciated, when it comes down to it, the lyrics
are well written and well delivered and that is what counts, at least
it does to me. Take Pulp for example, they write good lyrics but I
don't personally like them. If I was going to review a Pulp album I
would feel it as my duty to say that the lyrics were good and try to
remain objective towards them. Maybe that's why I'm a philosophy
student instead of a journalist, but it seems to make sense to me..

of songs mentioned that I've never even heard of, some of which have even

the release of Black Hole Sun a couple of years ago and so far my
collection consists of:

   Louder than Love
Bad Motor Finger (is that one word??)
   Superunknown
   DOTU (best yet, probably)
   BHS single
Fell on Black Days single feat Kyle Petty
Fell on Black Days single feat Girl U Want
   Basketball Diaries album (Blind Dogs)
Pretty Noose single feat snakebite etc

Hey Ho,

well, here goes my first entry to the digest. To begin, TOP O' THE MORNIN'
TO YOU ALL!!

After having ` Pretty Noose ' ringing in my head for the last week,
I found an offer at a Melbourne record store this morning I couldn't
refuse - A free Soundgarden Video with the purchase of DOTU.

Upon further inspection, I found that the video was in fact a promo -
only, plain labelled video compilation from Polygram Australia of
SD's recent videos. It contains videos of:

Pretty Noose ( the "concept" version )
( you folks in the US seen this video yet?...Surely!!)
                Black Hole Sun
                My Wave
                Spoonman
                Jesus Christ Pose
                Pretty Noose ( the " performance " version -
just the guys miming the song )

The videos in this order are all repeated three times on the tape. So, has
anyone anywhere seen this video or is it just Australia only??
Still, I feel it's good value.

The video to Pretty Noose is quite good, nothing mind - bendingly brilliant.
What's with Chris's hedgehog hair??!!

Without saying what's already been said, I'm giving DOTU my thumbs up.
I'm currently listening to it in full for the first time as I type this,
so I won't get into an in - depth analysis of each song yet. Favourites
so far are Pretty Noose ( understatedly awesome!! ), Dusty and Never the
Machine forever.

This week Australia's supposed " youth radio network " Triple J is featuring
DOTU.

Anyway groovemeisters, have a good one!!

this guy just sees the surface.
How depressing can a song about a fictional animal be ("Rhinosaur")? It
talks about the animals predatorial habits...i found it interesting. "Boot

the Outside World" is kind of a pissy song? This guy probably cheered Kurt

Alright, since this song (Pretty Noose) is about "an attractively packaged
bad idea", this most likely is a reference to the Garden of Eden. The snake
made it seem like eating the fruit was a great idea when he conned Eve into
eating it. However, the consequences of eating the fruit were bad.
Therefore it was "an attractively packaged bad idea"

Hey List!

a couple rec. co. weasel questions and a comment:

1. Has anyone seen the issue of Billboard that would have figures for vinyl
sales of DoTU. Did they chart? I know PJam charted with one of their vinyl
totals.

2. If the vinyl numbers have been released...when will the sales for the CD
and tapes be released? IF SG debuts at #1 (very likely), will the official
web page (or official mailing list) have some sort of "Thank You" to the
fans? Let's see how classy they are ;-) (lurkers...get to work! :-)

3. Can anyone else from Australia verify the Polygram video promo? Is
there really 18 videos? (3 of each?)

comment:

It has come to my attention that the 'alleged' radio only promo that I
immediately labeled as a bootleg may actually be a real release. It also
may already be bootlegged! So be careful when you spend your dough. Make
sure you see the A&M seal of approval. I'll post any updates on the
validity of this item in the discog's.

Hey All..
Yes! Yes! Yes! Friggin eh...

For 3 weeks, I have to live with my mom while an apartment
opens up, nontheless, it sucks rocks. Especially when I have
DOTU in the palm of my hand. Its screaming "Play me LOUD"
So...I finally have the chance, right now!

Family is gone to a family reunion in some backward town in
Iowa. Place to myself(I had to work today, couldn't go, bummers)
Now, I have a brew in my hand and totally blaring DOTU, it rocks
so hard!

I love it just because I know this CD will grow on me with
repeat listens. I raved to a co-worker about it, he picked it
up and totally dug it. He had no idea why so many critics said it
was just a 'good' album. Some bands are great doing what they
do best, straightforeward rock. No one got on the Replacements
ass for doing straightforeward pop, don't see the difference with
these boys.

Well, gotta get a rum and coke and keep the buzzz going.
Laters
Peace
!

he doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. He's probably one of

handle but yes they are other african american members of the list. It's
kind of interesting that I have always found that sg fans are the most
diverse in terms of ethnicity and musical tastes. That why I like sg
concerts the pacific northwest is just a tad on the racist side, and sg
concerts always have a diverse group of people at them. Just as well since
I have a diverse heritage, Nigerian, English, Scottish, over 3/4 nigerian
though. Anyway I have go watch baseball now, btw it's really a big deal
that Eddie Vedder went to rodmans bday party. (Not that I'm a vedder fan)
but Randy Johnson got to hang out in the studio for the recording of
superunk. (Lucky Fuck) Also Kim Thayil has been spotted at Mariners games
sitting with Jay Buhners wife, it was funny how the announcer spotted her
and not him. If it was vedder or courtney love they would have her in the

I see Boot Camp as kind of a follow-up to the feeling of being stifled
creatively in Drawing Flies, except now the subject is talking about
how he has to "behave" in public:
I must obey the rules, I must be tame and cool

It reminds me of the feeling the band must have when they are being
interviewed. "In clusters of the mice" could be the public, "The smoke
is in our eyes" could be about the way other artists' views of
themselves get clouded by their popularity, as in getting too full of
themselves. Soundgarden, thank God, has never done that, but it must
be tempting at times.
  "Like babies on display
Like angels in a cage" I think carries on the interview or "public
display" image.
I can't figure out either whether he really wants out or if he would
just prefer the situation to change so it doesn't feel so suffocating.

I also like what you said, Matt, about how the ending carries over the
restraint the whole song is about. Thats pretty brilliant songwriting
if you ask me.

I had a similar thought, Deb. I wondered how people who jumped on
after SuperUnknown would like it (no offense to those on the list of

Hmm, I would somewhat agree with that. When you catch biblical and
literary references in songs and other literature, they ususally aren't
about that thing. Rather, the Garden of Eden reference is used to
highlight, or point to what Chris is singing about. It takes an event
that is recognized as being common knowledge and uses it to illustrate
the idea. The apple was a pretty noose. The song talks about a new term
and uses a famous example to explain itself. I think I may have said the
same thing ten different ways there, so I hope one of them made sense.

From: Ben Timberlake <btimlake@nwu.edu>

I haven't seen a new issue of Rolling Stone or Billboard yet with the
album positions. But, for what it's worth, at Blockbuster Music, DOTU is
#4 on the wall of "Top Twenty." I don't know on what they base their
information, but it's only $11.98 if someone hasn't bought it yet. And if
you haven't yet bought it, FOR GOD'S SAKE WHY NOT?? You should sell your
relatives to get this album. Okay, maybe not, but at least sell yourself
and sell everything you love (quick! reference to what song?).

I dunno... personally, "Rhinosaur" is one of my favorites on the album... I
really
like the lyrics, plus the riff is really catchy (anyone else think that it
kinda sounds
like "Smokestack Lightning"?)...
As for the solo, Kim turns out a real wah-wah fest after the time change...
sounds
really raw and it's fun to listen to... there's another solo towards the end
of the song which sounds better...
Definately NOT the worst on the record.

with the liner notes?

>> ANyone agree that the album cover looks a bit like the superunknown cover?
>> Maybe its from the same photo shoot.

yep... not that that's a bad thing... I think the cover is cool,
though I like Superunknown's artwork way more that DOTU's...

>> I think this album has more solos then before, but that is great because
>> Kim (i assume he plays most of the solos) is playing great, I'm suprised

I nothiced this too, and I think it's great! The solos in "Tighter
and Tighter" and "Never The Machine Forever" sound awesome... Even
though Ben wrote the lyrics for one song, and the music for about
three, Chris still wrote the lyrics for thirteen of the songs... not
to cut on the rest of the band, but my favorite songs always seem to
end up being the ones Chris has written, though I think NTMF is one of
the album's best...

>> One more thing Blow up the Outside World is the best. What is the next
>> single? Any B-sides that are not album songs.

I don't know if I have a favorite song on the album yet... but BUtOW
is definately great... I'm curious to hear the songs that didn't make
the album (if they exist... the early track list had some songs called
"Christi", "Bleed Together", "Karaoke"...) wonder what became of
them...?

Subject: Finally a good review!

I was lurking around MTV on AOL. They had a review of DotU. It was a good
review to say the least. But it mostly compared them to the Beatles. Anyways
I copied it for all you non-aolers out there. So read on...
- --------------------
"SOUNDGARDEN - Down On The Upside (A&M)

With their last record, "SUPERUNKNOWN," Soundgarden pretty much cemented
their rightful place at the center of rock and metal's '90s fusion. They made
the move from Seattle "grunge" to mainstream heavy rotation (did anyone not
have "Black Hole Sun" looping through their brain in the summer of '94?)
without losing their recognizable brawny, dynamic sound. In an era of music
laced with self-loathing and fears/accusations of "selling out," Soundgarden
is refreshingly unafraid to play arena-size rock (they'll remind other
Lollapalloozers how it's done this summer). The band's new album, "DOWN ON
THE UPSIDE," their fifth, isn't a radical departure or milestone, but rather
a journey farther into the familiar Soundgarden territory; with its
masterful, epic feel, the album is also a throwback to the hard-rock heyday
of '70s bands like Led Zeppelin and, yes, Pink Floyd.

The first song, "Pretty Noose," is already flooding radio airwaves, and with
good reason. It's a study in the band's signature heaviosity and staircase
chord progressions. Unlike some of his self-effacing peers, Chris Cornell
sees no need to bury his vocals deep in the mix, so his strained voice adds
edge. The basic formula may seem simple, but the result is actually quite
sophisticated. It'll be hard for anyone to resist indulging in a little
head-banging to this tune and to the one that follows, "Rhinosaur," which is
fully informed by Led Zep with a good dose of Aerosmith's coarseness. It's
Kim Thayil's bombastic lead guitar riffs and Matt Cameron's piledriving
drumming that count the most on this record; the lyrics are simple sketches
of different emotions, as in the punkish hootenanny of "Ty Cobb," with a
refrain that can't be printed here, or, on "Pretty Noose," "Let your motor
race/Pick it up/And get this mother gone."

One of the most intriguing aspects about this band is that they sound eerily
like the Beatles at their darkest--but thirty years later, with the addition
of crunching metal chords. Don't forget that Soundgarden recorded a hoarse,
heavy cover of "Come Together"; check "Tighter & Tighter" on this record for
echoes of that song's moody, buzzing bass and guitar. The reverb, melodic
ferocity and chanted underwater ending of "Blow Up the Outside World" is
another similar visitation. Take it as a mark of Soundgarden's musical depth
and complexity, and also of their aspirations; you can count on this band not
to self-destruct. As Cornell sings in "Blow Up the Outside World," "No matter
how hard I fall nothing can break me at all."
