Well I'm 21 a Metallica fan, male, and as horny as the normal guy i guess
(I don't grope girls in the moshpit though, not intentionaly anyway).
I could see Metallica playing the Australian festivals, Alternative Nation
probably, cause of the time frame. You Americans complaining when you can see
Metallica and Soundgarden together, plus more. I stay overnight to see
local bands (Naiad, usually at Wollongong for Australians), okay the
ticket is between $0-8 but you still have it good.

Subject: My $0.02 on DOTU

I got my copy of DOTU on Tuesday (I don't have a record player anymore,
so aside from the collector angle, the vinly would have done me no good),
and I think it's time to throw in my two cents on the album.

First off, I think it's an excellent album. I agree that BUTOW will
probably be the next BHS (it's already in heavy rotation on one of the
radio stations in Baltimore), but don't knock it for that. It's a great
piece of work.

Anyway, early favs from the new album are Dusty, Ty Cobb, Never the
Machine..., and (yes) Rhinosaur. Oh yeah, BUTOW too. But... maybe I
bought into the early rumors too much, especially the one where they said
the album would be less polished than Superunknown. Far from it, DOTU is
probably the most refined, most melodic, and definitely most eloquent
album they've put out. The album keeps leaving me with the feeling that
"It's not BMF". I mean, the new album just doesn't have that "in your
face" intensity that some of the earlier work had. Ty Cobb comes close,
but a good listen to the progression of Slaves and Bulldozers, JCP, and
Face Pollution can leave me foaming at the mouth. I guess I really had
my hope set on that kind of an album...

Don't get me wrong, I do like the album a lot. It's been in my CD player
all week. If a guy "only" hits 45 home runs this season, you don't
criticize him just because he hit 55 last year. KNow what I mean?

Greg

p.s. Almost forgot... anybody else think Zero Chance sounds like a TOTD
piece? Not just the way Chris sings, even the guitar has shades
of Mike McCready. Maybe it's just me...

Subject: Boot Camp Revisited

It's been interesting to read the responses to my original message
about Boot Camp. For such a short song, it really sparked a lot of
emotion/dicsussion. My personal interpretation about the meaning of
the song is that the Boot Camp represents life. Things are very
regulated, you have to 'obey the rules', 'stay on the ground', etc.
When Chris refers to 'something good, far away', I feel he means
heaven. Someone suggested that the Boot Camp represented heaven, but
I think that heaven is what he is looking towards.

In general, I think that this song is the antithesis of The Day I
Tried to Live. In an interview, Chris indicated that TDITTL was about
not being introverted, and forcing himself to go out and live life,
etc., making it a very optimistic song. Boot Camp seems to take the
opposite view. The world is a negative, controlling place, and the
only hope for freedom is 'far away from here.' I might be really
reaching, but this might be relating to Kurt's suicide. The song
contrasts the controlling society with the desire for freedom, and
ends abruptly, like a life cut short...

On a lighter note, with regards to the discussion on Rhinosaur, at
first I liked the song, especially the drumline, but was kind of
neutral on the solo. I thought it was a bit too raunchy, but
definitely showed Kim's style. After listening a few times, it
started to grow on me. In response to all the critics, I'd say listen
to Your Saviour on TOTD, which album everyone almost universally
praises. I definitely see a resemblance between the solos. I also
think that the drum riff on Rhinosaur is fantastic; it's deceptively
simple. There's actually quite a lot going on, especially on the
snare. Lyrically, I think Chris does an excellent job, as usual. The
imagery he creates is great.

Subject: I hear the wagon coming........
From: tonerkin@usa.pipeline.com (Tonerkin)

I've got a feeling we are going to be having some company soon!!
This morning in the grocery store I picked up the dreaded People
magazine to see if they reviewed DOTU. And yes, they did. I won't
type the whole thing here but just a quote or two. Frist senentence:
"Imagine the Beatles in plaid flannel and nose rings, and you get some
sense of what this latest, and finest , Soundgarden disc sounds like."
"Thunderous guitar crunches and lead singer Chris Cornell's soaring
vocals get your heart pounding, but there is always an irresistble
melodic hook that makes the volume enticing rather than distancing."
"Likewise, the lyrics are more personal and compelling than in the
past "
There are two other references to the Beatles in the short review.
If that won't load a few up on the wagon I'll be suprised. Hell,
might even get a few "ancient ones" like myself. If the next issue
has a story on Chris and Susan, "rock couple of the year"complete with
pix of them and their poms, I may throw up!!! Seth, now is the time
to start with your money making scheme. 10 bucks to join the list!!
$.02 to post each time!!! Oh course a grandfather clause will be in
effect for the oldtimers. Toni BTW the picture with the review is
down right people friendly!! Chris is smiling (appears to be a smile
same with Kim) and I do believe that is sort of a smile on Ben well
it's not a scowl let's put it that way!

Sommites,
Wasn't kyle petty son of Richard supposed to be on this album? Also where
are Kristin and Karoke? Anyway methinks another somms is in the works.
Anyway I am really starting to love this album, It has been moved into
that category of great sg albums, although I think that for the time being
I like superunknown better when an album has 3 of your favorite songs bar
none on it it's hard to pick it's successor. However now that I have
fallen in love with overfloater it's right up there with bmf and superunk.
Anyway I have to disagree with Blind Dog(another great song) that this
album will be more successful then superunk, dusty for example has inho
two distinct parts that fit together extremely well. But I think the teeny
boppers will lose interest because of it. It's just so dark and beautiful
I just don't see legions of teeny boppers bobbing there heads to it. I
haven't seen PN in heavy MTV rotation yet, so I just don't see it. I can
see the album debutinh high and then dropping off but not alot of singles
success. Look at the rage album it debuted at #1 and now it's no longer on
the album chart. Basically all the loyal fans bought when it came out, and
that was it. The same thing will probably happen with dotu, as for the
whole lawsuit thing, theres probably in all likelyhood (sp?) more too it
then meets the eye. If sg was really being petty, it would have been all
over the news by now. I wouldn't be suprised if A&M or there management
was involved. They have so much control over there music you have to
expect things like this. I mean they gave a single to the sup pop single
of the month club when ben joined I am sure A&M loved that but since they
own complete rights to all there songs what could they do. In any rate I
    wouldn't worry about it.

- ------------------------------------------------------
Soundgarden: Down on the Upside
Great sound, lousy lyrics.
By: Dave Ferman

After years of making mediocre records that were at once tinny AND
muddy, Soundgarden (on 1994's Superunknown and the just-released Down on the
Upside) finally jelled as a unit in the studio. The result is that now they
have a sound (Chris Cornell's powerful bellow atop buzzing, crisply crashing
guitars and a rumbling bass-and-drums bottom) that is unique, instantly
identifiable and reminiscent of the sort of earthy, no-frills,
psychelelic-tinged metal of early Led Zeppelin.
And working in tandem with this sound are the lyrics, which are most
often by Cornell and always have a pessimistic, angry, confrontational tone.
It's within the combination of this sound and viewpoint that the band
becomes what thousands of disaffected but cynical kids want: Nihilism that
comes across at the arena level. And in doing so, Soundgarden just may have
finally transformed itself intot the perfect '90s hard-rock band.
Musically, the 16-track, 65-minute Down is a near-total triumph: The
artfully layered guitars and hard but lean crunch of songs such as Ty Cobb
(perhaps the first punk song with mandolins), Rhinosaur and the
six-minute-plus Tighter & Tighter (with obvious nods to Zeppelin songs such
as Out on the Tiles, Dazed and Confused and Tangerine) have an easy command
of a wide range of dynamics extremely rare in modern hard rock.
But then, of course, there's the message behind it all, and that's
where Down stumbles. Badly. Cornell wrote they lyrics to all but one of the
songs here and, as on past CD's, his shortcomings are quickly evident: He's
both vague and grouchy.
Again and again, these songs boil down to a guy who professes to hate
not only stardom but life in general: Pretty Noose, Zero Chance, Blow up the
Outside World, Never Named and many others display a one-note unfriendliness
and disgust with the world in general that, over more than an hour, grows
extremely tiresome. And when he's not raging that he'd like to either cut
himself off from or, literally, blow-up the outside world, he's asking (as on
Never Named and Burden in my Hand) for our pity.
As a result, despite a number of very good songs (among them Noose,
Tighter and Dusty) Down can't help but feel long-winded. Soundgarden is a
great-sounding band, no question, but at their core they too often offer just
a gray, static weariness of spirit.

Rating: Two and a half stars on a scale of five.
- -------------------------------------------------------
Chris... asking for our pity? HA!!! This guy obviously doesn't know
what in the hell he's talking about!! Chris... grouchy and vague? Well,
ok... maybe a little. But I think truthful and ambiguous are better words to
define him. Chris literally wanting to blow up the world? What kind of
drugs is this guy on? Nihilism at an arena level?? Someone hand me my gun.
 Comments anyone?

My friends suck. They are hopelessly stuck on that alternative
bandwagon. I conned them into listening to the SG premiere on the
radio, and they replied with "Soundgarden sucks, why don't they play
Black Hole Sun?" Hahaha. Maybe your right, DOTU will primarily appeal
to the real fans of SG. Most likely "Pretty Noose" will get the "Black
Hole Sun" effect w/ the radio play and all....

DOTU looks a litle bit like the Superunknown cover becuase they both
used that effect where the area beneath their feet is a "reflection
pool" of what is ontop. But I think the whole artwork of DOTU kicks
serious ass....I like the color choice on the cover....

Hi Y'all!
My name is Keidra!
I'm new to this list, but not really. I've been reading it for months on my
friends E-mail account, but I have subscribed coz I havent had much to say.
Now that DOTU is out however........
MY GOD IS THIS A GREAT ALBUM! There has been so much dissapointing music
out lately, but this album lives up to and exceeds all of my expectations.
SG seems to get better with age,it's almost scary how great they are...
The standout track for me(right now)
Zero Chance:I agree with whoever on the list said it was very Temple of The
Dog sounding. It's so chilling,yet understated..Every time I hear it I
nearly pass out from emotion.
Right now, this album alone has convinced me to go to Lolla. I dont care if
it will cost me and arm and a leg. I don't care if they only play an hour
set. I dont care that Metallica's new song is so bad it makes me physically
ill. Soundgarden deserves my cash, and my lifelong devotion:-)

Just had to get my two cents in...

enlightening side-note:
I need to comment on this. I work at a record store & a surprisingly large
amount of African-Americans have bought the new record in the last new days.
It's really cool to see this... I live in a very diverse (and very racist
sadly) area & I'm happy to see all types of people can relate to
Soundgarden's music. I was talking to some East Asian customers and they
loved the fact that Soundgarden was once working with a Asian bassist (Hiro
of course) & that's one of the reasons that turned them onto the band. (This
goes for Smashing Pumpkins with James Iha.)

obscure personal history:
Actually to be honest if it weren't for a very close friend of mine from
Junior High School, Corey (who happened to be black) I probably would never
have gotten into Soundgarden back when I did. He forced a Hendrix record on
me & asked me if I liked it... I of course did. He then told me to keep eyes
on Seattle-area for bands like Soundgarden, Green River & the Melvins.
 -insert well-known Seattle-music history here- I guess I should say I'm
Native American/Anglo(predominately)/African... which doesn't explain my hair

I got a copy of Bmf/SOMMS. Cool, huh? Anyway. It's definately all pieces
of a real SOMMS (Motorvision group photo, Bmf has DISK 1 on it, SOMMS is in
it, the 'letter', etc) but I have a authenticity question which could be best
answered by those with the PROMO copy of the disks. My SOMMS (disk 2) has
'For Promotional Use Only - Not For Sale' printed on it but the disc's jewel
case doesn't nor does Disk 1. Knowing a little about promo records I notice
that the UPC code doesn't have a hole in it & with the fact that neither the
packaging or the first disk have 'promo' in anyway on them I've decided I've
got a hybrid copy of Bmf/SOMMS. Not that this bothers, but I just want to
know if this is true or not. Anyone care to enlighten me? Also Geoff (sorry
I mis-placed you personal address) please add me to the list... and don't
forget to denote that I have a promo release. Thank you.

I also got my Pretty Noose 45 (it's spelled VINYL people.. sorry, but that
REALLY bothers me) & I'm grand number 4626. Yippie.... 4626. Anyway. I got
it for free (c: Well, I traded a RAtM import disc (Bullet in the Head) that
I got for free a few years back for it. OK... too much information, pardon
that.

I'd be happy to keep count of all existing copies on the list of the number
PN red 45, so those that have copies (I know a few do at least) please e-mail
me with 'Pretty Noose 45' or something to that effect in the subject title.
 Please include the number too.

okay, my question is, who is he talking to/about?
if we accept that this is a reference to the garden of eden, then we have
a few choices. i'm going to assume that it's not adam, since the song is
clearly about a woman.
so, i wonder, is chris referring to eve... which kind of makes sense, i
mean, christian theology for years tried to blame eve for the downfall of
mankind as we know it...
or is he talking about Lilith?
Lilith was adam's first wife, myth says she was even created *before*
adam, and that she refused to obey the Guy Upstairs (which is why he got
rid of her and created eve).
I'd like to think that that's who chris is referring to. though I think
he'd like lilith a hell of a lot more than eve -- she's my personal
patron goddess (lilith i mean) -- and much more fun, but also much more
likely to fit the description of the woman referred to in 'PN'.

am i the only looney to have thought about this?

i was at the university district street fair last sunday, just walking

we were looking through the stuff (which was pretty neat without the SG
connection) and i wondered if maybe chris didn't pick up his necklace at
some seattle street fair years ago? ;-) it would make sense, wouldn't it?

anyway, one of my co-workers also saw this vendor, and she got his

A few more people have emailed, mentioning they now own somms, so it's
time for an update. There are now 47 copies of somms accounted for by
somms-list members and 10 other copies known to be owned by others.
If anybody else has a copy, email me preferably with the word
SOMMS in the subject. I'll only count genuine copies, and assume they are
on CD unless you tell me. (there are some on vinyl I believe)
A name followed by (+1) indicates that that person also know people who

Does anyone have a copy of DOTU that ISN'T digipak? I coulda sworn that
I read somewhere that DOTU digipak is limited edition but I walked into
Record Town tonight and found like ten copies of DOTU digipak and I
haven't seen any other kind of DOTU anywhere. I think this is the real

packaging. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Also, has anyone else been utterly embarrassed when driving your

Subject: Comments on DOTU; Digipaks

Here's some of my assorted comments on DOTU:

Rhinosaur-Part of the chord sounds sorta like "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath.

Zero Chance-Reminded me of 2 other songs, "Ten Years Gone" by Led Zeppelin,
and "Soma" by Smashing Pumpkins.

Dusty-The opening drums sorta sound like "D'yer M'aker" by Zeppelin

Ty Cobb-Possibly the best song on the album; great to play at full volume
when you're pissed off at someone!

Blow Up the Outside World-Reminded me of "Four Walled World" by Temple of
the Dog

Never Named-Shades of "Kingdom of Come"

Applebite-Shades of "No Wrong, No Right"

No Attention-Second best song on the album; I loved it when I first heard
it on Self Pollution

Overfloater-Totally Pink Floyd-like, or even "No Quarter" by Led Zeppelin

An Unkind-Reminded me a little of "Nazi Driver"

Boot Camp-Again, like Floyd

I realize there's tons of Zeppelinesque riffs and overtones in this album.
But, it's pretty clear, Zeppelin kicked ass, and so does SG. However, this
album is one small step below Superunknown. That's still saying a lot,
considering how awesome Superunknown is.

BTW, what exactly is a digipak?

Vasant

Subject: An amazing week of Soundgarden!

This past week has been was the most amazing week of Soundgarden for
me! Last Monday during the world premiere I was taping from a
Baltimore radio station, 98 Rock, that was slightly out of my range.
Half through the show, I checked the tape and their was static. Shit.
Half an hour after the premiere ended around midnight, another station
saves my life and play Down On The Upside ALL THE WAY THROUGH!. I
immediately threw in the other tape just when Pretty Noose started and
listened to the album well into the early morning hours. On Friday, I
found a used copy of the SOMMS CD at a used CD store and the songs
rock, especially Into The Void! That same day I finally heard and got
a copy of Soundgarden's awesome version of COME TOGETHER. This is
probably the best song the guys have ever recorded. Saturday, of
course, taped the Saturday Night Live performance. Chris voice was
kind of screwed up during Pretty Noose, but Burden In My Hand was
excellent. And wrapped this amazing week up on Sunday at Midnight on
120 minutes, I taped the entire interview with Chris and Kim!! -

That new song "Tighter and Tighter" from the new record is incredible!
The beginning chord progression is kind of similar to SG's version of
Come Together, but it then kicks into a blues-type groove, kind of
like "Holy Water." All I can say is that I love this song and its
probably the best one on the album.
