Actually, that's about the going rate for festival type things.. Reading
tickets cost 60 quid, which is something like $100 or more (I think). My maxim
for festival going is to see which bands are on the bill who you would go and
see anyway, and work out what it would cost you to see them individually. Last
year with Soundgarden, Pumpkins and Foo fighters it was well worth going (to
reading). If you are only going to Lolla to see SG, then it might not be worth
it unless you really don't want to miss the festival experience. Especially
considering they are planning another US tour afterwards.

I have to agree. Maybe you some of you remember my ranting last week
about the $5.25 service charge per ticket. Lolla has definitely gone
from an "alternative" attraction to main-stream commercial enterprise.
It sucks, but what can you do? It's the in thing now, and everybody's
got to get their nickel out of it...

Want a bargain? How about the HFStival for those in the
Baltimore-Washington area. Eighteen bands for eighteen dollars. Anyway,
the point being (if there really is a point) that good deals are still
out there. You just have to look a little harder.

Now, at what price Soundgarden? That's tough... I've never seen them
live, and Lolla is also featuring Metallica (who absolutely MADE
Woodstock, IMHO), so it's a little easier for me to justify forking over
$43 for the ticket this time. Now, had I caught SG at Lolla '92 or on
tour in '94, I probably wouldn't waste the money and the day of leave
from work. The ticket industry has become such a scam, but we keep
buying 'em, so they'll keep selling 'em. Anyway, Soundgarden is one of
the "Five Bands I Must See Before I Die", so they get my $43... this
time. If the Gods of Lolla want me to come back next year though,
they'll have to lower the price. SG is the last band on my "Five Bands"
list. And not just anyone gets on there... (Maybe next year we can
start the "Boycott Lollapalooza Web Page")

Hmmm.. There's a lot of good music on the album that Ben didn't write. True,
he had a lot more influence over this one than previous ones, but I think "the
real innovator" is too strong a title. Not that I'm saying that Ben's songs
weren't excellent, miond you.

I think the reason you think the bassists were innovative is because they
wrote music that wasn't the same as Chris' the main writers have always been
Chris and the band bassist, so it's no surprise that the bassist's songs
always sound different. Chris and Kim have a fairly similar writing style
which makes Ben's songs stand out even more. I agree, Ben has written some
really good songs (see above) but so has Chris.
>

The beauty of Soundgarden lies in the fact that they all contribute to the
music, Chris' songs are among the best I've ever heard, but I believe that
without the contributions from the other members of the band, they wouldn't be
even half as good, and they certainly wouldn't be Soundgarden songs at the end
of the day. The same is true of Ben. I think that Ben is underrated by a lot
of people, though.

Personally, I think Ben is the best member of the band. When he play's he
like he's off in a different world...but always tying the rest of the
band together. He plays harmonies that if you heard them by themselves,
you'd think they sucked. But in the songs, they sound incredible. His
songs are unique, i've never heard someone write a song like him.
P.S. I also have a lot of respect for him being a bass player myself.
Thanks.

As a bass player (thank you Mr. Champagne) I can honestly say that as
far as playing ability goes, Hiro and Ben were the same. I can play
lots of Soundgarden songs, and a lot of em are pretty easy on bass =)
There are also ultramega hard songs to play on bass, like Somewhere and
Spoonman (it really tires out my fretting hand), and Ben is a great bass
player.. he's like an Unsung Hero in the world of Les Claypools and
Fleas.. Hiro was a great bass player too.. as for songwriting ability
Hiro and Ben are both amazing but I prefer Ben's songs.. I like the
newer Soundgarden better than the older Soundgarden.... But that's just
the world according to Erin.

I agree with Caryn on this one. I have a choice of two Lolla's. The one
out in western Il.
or Indianapolis. After long and hard consideration I have opted not to go.
It's not the money issue. I would work overtime or sell my dog to get the
cash if necessary. It's a couple of things. One is general admission.
This seems like a ridiculous way to do it. Sort of defeats the purpose of a
festival. How are you suppose to "enjoy" all the other stages and things
that are offered. There are several bands on the second stage I was
interested in seeing. If you are lucky enough to get a good spot for
seeing SG your butt is going to have to stay put the entire day. Also the
general admission always sets up a dangerous situation when the gates are
open. By the looks of some of the fans I see walking around in Metallica
tees I fear they will run people over in a heartbeat to get up front. So I
will not pay big bucks to see SG for a shortened version of their set. I
will suffer through the summer hearing all of you gush about the show. And
than hopefully if and when Soundgarden comes to Chicago I will be there!

CAUTION: REVIEW (DELETE NOW IF YOU ARE SICK OF REVIEWS)

After about a week of listening:

Before You think I hate the album, I give it 4.25 on scale of 5.

Boot Camp - pink floyd (I can't wait for Alt NRG II when they do this
with Roger Waters, heh heh)
Zero Chance - pearl jam (but even PJ doesn't have this magic anymore)
Ty Cobb - b-side as song 5 (Rock-a-billy?)
Blow Up TOW - Beatles (Another Lennon Demo behind this?)
Applebite - pink floyd again . . . ever heard "Heartbeat, Pigmeat"?
Never the Machine - Ultramega OK (why Greg G. inspiration? hmmmmmm...)
Tighter and Tighter - Holy Water II
No Attention - Kickstand II
Switch Opens - R.E.M. (complete with Micheal Stipe fast vocals "Switch is
on, Switch is on, Switch is on . . ." and the marchy feel of early R.E.M.)

Fav Song: Applebite (seth, if you still talk to Matt, tell him its by far
the most innovative on the album ;) )

Least Fav: Rhinosaur (seth, if you still talk to Matt, tell him it's by far
the least innovative on the album >:( )

Pretty Noose doesn't seem to fit in. I have no arguement to support this
statement. It's just a feeling, like the force. Soundgarden should
produce for other bands . . . they did great. They tried for less polished
sound than SuperUnknown? Shit, this is smooth and soft like silk.

Thats my criticizm. Critics suck. I really do like the album, I just
needed to get this all of my chest. This and that this album is so . . .
soft (that isn't bad). You know something: Take BadMoterFinger,
SuperUnknown, and Down On the Upside. They don't build on each other
(with a couple of exceptions). They just are like different branches of
a tree. Let it Grow. Go, Wolfboy, Go.

Geez, what up Caryn? You've been pissed for a couple days now...

If you are going to Lolla just to see SG, then maybe it isn't worth it
for you. But you aren't paying ~$50 to get SG tix, you are paying to see
over a dozen bands, that seems like a good deal to me. Food? You are
going to have to eat, whether you go to Lolla or not. Expect you to
buy t-shirts? Maybe you expect to buy a t-shirt, I don't know about anyone
else. Three hour drive? Some of us have to drive 6 hours, one-way.
Really, just relax. If you don't want the hassle, just wait 'til the
fall, and hope that SG decides to tour some more.

Vikki, here is the review from the NY Times...my boyfriend took the other
newspapers with him today, but I'll try and post those reviews/interviews as
soon as I can.
NY TIMES MAY 19th
Recordings View/CONSORTING WITH THE SNAKE

Since its inception, rock music has had the snake as its escort. The snake is
slimy, sinuous and lowly. It can be the agent of a fall from grace, an
all-purpose phallic symbol, a cheater and back stabber or the losing
combination in a roll of the dice. Whatever form it takes, the snake is
always very masculine and very wicked. And it is all over "Down on the
Upside," the latest album from SG, the leaders of grunge's hard rock school.
The album is not the first recording on which SG has walked with the
snake--"Get on the Snake" is one of the centerpieces of 1989's "Louder Than
Love." Nor does "DOTU" represent the best use to which SG has put the snake;
the honor goes to the line about the snake being in the singer CC's eyes in
"Black Holde Sun," the hit from last year's No. 1 album "Superunknown." But
never before has SG relied on snake imagery more that it does on "DOTU," the
band's rawer, looser follow up to "Superunknown." "Eat the fruit, and kiss
the snake good night," Mr. Cornell sings in his high pitched voice in the
album's first song, "Pretty Noose." In "Tighter and Tighter," he softly
moans, "Fell too far to start again/A sudden snake found my shape and tells
the world." And in "Unkind," the bassist Ben Shepherd pitches in, "We see the
vipers of distance/Crawl into our lives every day/Breeding our Edens of
hatred." Even when there is no mention of the snake, it is still present. He
lurks in titles like "Applebite" and in the references to primal sin and
falls from Paradise in other songs. In its songs, SG does not represent the
snake but rather is possessed by it and is led into sin by it. Thus the
victimizers are the victims, able to sin without repenting and to escape
responsibility for their actions. In this way the band can harness grunge's
self-absorbtion to heavy metal's destructive energy and come up with a song
like "Blow Up the Outside World." SG's guitarist, Kim Thayil, is the master
of the serpentine, playing Jimmy Page to Mr. Cornell's Robert Plant. Or, on
"DOTU's" weaker tracks--about a third of the 16 song album--he plays Eddie
Van Halen to Mr. Cornell's Sammy Hagar. He slowly wraps his guitar lines
around Mr. Cornell's voice in "Tighter and Tighter," increasing in intensity
until he overwhelms the singer. The snake isn't the only animal invoked on
"DOTU."
There are some mice, a dog, an ant and one fictional rhinsaur. Generally,
IDENTIFYING WITH ANIMALS IN SONG LYRICS IS A SIGN OF LOW SELF- ESTEEM, and SG
is no exception. For all the virility and macho power that rock singers have
tried to wring from the snake, SG remains more interested in the fact that it
is the only animal curse to spend its days slithering on the ground. As Mr.
Cornell sings in "Rhinosaur," "Only healthy in the dirt." (end)

okay.. $35-40 is a good price for a 'festival', you're seeing a lot of

my problem is the extra $10 service charge to buy it over the net... it's

don't understand why soundgarden had to do lolla. the original concept
of lolla has been perverted and twisted... the point of lolla was many
different kinds of music and people. right now, it's gonna be buttrock
central.

the band has spoken quite emphatically how they did not enjoy the gnr
experience for that reason. and yet, they choose yet again to wade into
the thick of that culture? don't get me wrong, i love metallica, i know
they are more intelligent than your average butt-rock band.
unfortunately, not many of their FANS are like that... and yes that is a
gross generalization, there are exceptions to every rule, but the point
is that it's going to be one mass male bonding ritual and i as a grrl am
not going to feel comfortable there....

i dunno. i'm rambling... i know... i just think that we need to talk
about this as opposed to just blindly buying our tickets like sheep.

2) management

this is actually a subject I am qualified to speak about... I was in the
music business for 10 years, left it last year... i'm not going to debate
my credentials, so let's not start that, okay? my point is: there are
many different styles of band management. some bands take a total "you
decide" approach and put their total faith and trust in their manager to
decide everything for them... other bands manage by committee (e.g., they
discuss all decisions and their manager implements them)... others a
combination of the two... there are about a zillion different models, and
every band is different... however, my point is that I sincerely doubt that
soundgarden are not involved in the day-to-day management of their
activities. these are not stupid guys who don't know any better or
don't care... like how kim asked to include the BMF and Ultramega logos
at the end of the PN video... i dunno. i think they would be very much
aware of a lawsuit being filed on their behalf.

again, i think. this is all opinion on my part... and i don't want to
paint them as bad guys, but i don't think you can blame it all on susan
silver and say that they have nothing to do with this decision.

and for those of you who think i'm over reacting, well, i wanna see how
you feel when seth is forced to take his web site down... when we're all
forced to remove all mention of the word 'soundgarden' from our web pages
because it's become a registered trademark. (don't laugh, they could do
it!) not all of us have such good connections with susan silver,ya
know? (nor do we necessarily want them)

*sigh* i'm remembering now why i left the music business in the first
place...

One thing that is mildly annoying though is when people repeat the

Onto the new album....
I got hold of it yesterday (Monday 20th) so it's had time to sink in. I
can definitely see some Beatles influence, especially in Blow up the

Ty cobb is pretty funky too. I didn't post yesterday as a assumed that

When I nipped into HMV Glasgow this afternoon, I decided to check out
the vinyl section and here's what I found -

3 copies of DOTU - How limited are these??????? Anyone got figures?

1 Limited Edition Coloured Vinyl Superunknown - has anyone got any
idea about this one? HOW limited exactly is it? And what colour is
it? It is a European release - it has 'She Likes Surprises' on it.
It's 12.99 (about $19 USA) If anyone is interested I can pick it up
and post it to them if they send me money. I'll have to know now
though, as I'm going home at the beginning of next month.

Subject: Web fun: commenting on DOTU
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

School ended for this year at noon today, so I started making some
changes to the unofficial SG site, with its newly registered domain
name, silvermanagement.com (it's a JOKE, people), including adding a
place where you can submit comments about DOTU and everyone will be
able to see them. It would be cool if those of you who want to do
reviews or just make a few comments or whatever filled it out. It's
linked from the DOTU page, and as you'll read there, it will parse
whatever you type as HTML, so if you want to include line breaks or
paragraph marks or whatever, feel free. Just don't add your own
horizontal rules, because the script will automatically put one above
your comments to separate it from everyone else's.

As per the suggestion of Blight Dog, Inc., this comment form will soon
be available for all of SG's releases as part of the attempt to get
more input from people around the world.

And if you have lyric quotes that you like, please suggest them to me
and I'll add them to the list of quotes that gets randomized for the
main page.

I listened to Burden... and yes,in the beginning of the first chord progression
the first two chords do sound reminiscent of Gallows poles.I only hear the
A minor to A major chord change from that tune and then maybe the g major
to D major. It's been a long time since I tried playing that one.I had to listen
really hard to pick it out of the song Burden. It's not derivative sounding.
There is a pretty good article in the new Guitar player magazine. The one
with Kim Thayil, holding one of his many Guild s-100 guitars,on the front cover.
Kim provides some info. regarding some of the instrumentation that was used on
Burden in my hand.As well as others songs.

Oh boy, have you got it bad. Soundgarden will not be coming within 16
hours of my house this summer. They were supposed to play in Minnesota,
but it looks like that date will not happen. Now I'm considering driving

Sommites,
I have a feeling that this could be the best sg album ever. Why you ask?
Because the first listen through I dodn't like it. The second one through
thought it was alright. Heard dusty for the 4th time and now I am like
superwhat? Anyway the sg songs I liked the most are the ones I was
initially ambivelent to. Limo Wreck, btw, Fresh Tendrills, 4th of july.
Anyway if anyone cares Entertainment Weekly gave the album a good review.
A B+ however the only problems they had with it was it was to long, and
none of the songs are easily accessible. I agree I really love dusty,
tighter and tighter, blow up the outside world, and track 3 can't remember
right now. I agree wholeheartedly that Ben really helped the band, w/o the
guy the just a really good band but not a incredible one. I have to
disagree with the comment that no new ground is broken on the album. You
don't hear it the first time but by the 4th time you realize who
unsymetrical the songs are. Dusty really has 2 distinct parts, that at
first listen shouldn't be together, but somehow they make it work. Dusty
what a beautiful song, doesn't really sound like them. Sounds like Chris
singing with a new hater influenced band. Thease guys are the only band I
know off that influences them selves. I think this album dispite having
led zep and beattles traces. Breaks new ground because you have to first
realize that sg, the beattles and led zep share alot of infleunces so
theres going to be some similarities. However they went farther then
either band imho went with those influences. I have been listning to alot
of howling wolf lately and I can hear it in Limo Wreck. It's there believe
me. Hmm... the band sounded bad on snl, when they played pretty noose.
However realize the peformance was late and ben said something to chris
afterwards. So there was obviously a problem. Burden in my hand sounded
good though, I like it better than the album one. Remember kids music
reviewers suck. I HATED supeunk the first time I heard it. 3 weeks later
it was permanantly in cd player. It took a good 4 months to digest that
album though. This one could take 6 months to a year. If thats not
breaking new ground I don't know what is.

Geez, I'm just happy that SG is touring - at all! We had this big
discussion over on the Alice In Chains mailing list about how Layne
doesn't want to tour, blah, blah. I mean, Soundgarden doesn't owe
us anything - they could charge $1,000 a ticket to see the concert.
Sure, we could bitch about it, but it comes down to the fact that
SG has the right to choose the venue they want to play in. In the
end, you have to make a decision: do I like SG enough to put up
with all the other shit ($$$, travel time, groping fans) to see
them anyway?

don't even have the oppurtunity. I just saw the SNL performance, and now

here in '94, I am not counting on them making a return visit. There is
no way to hear a band but live. I want to go seriously nuts to Ty Cobb

619-944-3596

I have already tallked to them about phone orders, and they said" have anyone
who is interested give them a call." talk to Curtis or Jenn.( they are an
Indie store in N. san Diego County)

here's the really great part of the whole thing.. the album ONLY cost me
19.78 plus tax.
I think that is pretty good considering I bought the black ( limited version
MY ASS) for 10 bucks or so!!!

the clear version also says " limited edition" but now I am very leary of
that! how limited is it?? I do know that this was " made in ENGALND " so
maybe I will be more " limited" than it is here! who knows!!?

I just know that I am in SOUNGARDEN HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!

I think I have covered the whole clear subject pretty well.if you still have
any questions please feel free to email( but I will using a diffrent name..

1.an unkind ( reminds me of OLD SOUNDGARDEN!! )
2.ty cobb

U0>Hey shroom,
U0> Ignore everyone who moans at you about your drooling comments
U0>over Chris. I personally find it rather amusing.

Me too. I love laughing, especially when I don't feel like doing it.

U0>One thing that is mildly annoying though is when people repeat the
U0>entire message that they're replying to. It does tend to clog up my
U0>mailbox a bit. :-)

But if people don't quote, then sometimes it's hard for others who've
been beaten by the big bad THC monster to remember what the hell you're
talking about. I find it handy, except when a whole message is quoted
for no apparent reason.

-Hey Chris, can I touch your thingy?

Subject: Blown Away by DOTU

I didn't expect to be saying this, but I'm absolutely blown away. I
finally got the chance to sit with the headphones and my shiny new CD
and I am amazed. No offense to you younger listers, but this is what
REAL music used to sound like, BEFORE butt-rock. God it was like a
flashback to the days I'd sit with my headphones, high on purple
microdot and just bliss out. And this was just my first listen.
Definitely a headphone album, and you don't even need the drugs to
feel the high. After one listen, I especially like Dusty, Never
Named, Tighter & Tighter, and Overfloater. And I still like Pretty
Noose, but I'm sure I'll be sick of it by the time it's played to
death. IMHO this is some of the best work SG has done, and I've been
following them for about 7 years. There is so much going on here
musically and of course the lyrics are intriguing, as always. I'm not
a musician, but I think this totally kicks ass. I haven't heard new
music this powerful in almost 20 years, and I am in heaven, no matter
what anyone else thinks (if its negative that is). I could just gush
on and on, but I think I'll just go to bed now. What a great trip.
