Hey everyone-

My take on Chris's hair; he's been hanging out with Jim Rose too much. While
Jim is very cool, he's a bad hair influence. Anyway, the band sounded
GREAT!!! I can't wait to see them again live.

Salutations,

well... i sat there... it gets on 1/2 hr later here because of "almost
live"... and when 12:30 rolled around and there was no musical guest... and
it got later and later... i realized that they were probably AGAIN only
going to let the band do ONE SONG... it almost wasn't worth flying to NY
for, now WAS it. do they not realize that the reason that 90 percent of us
are watchign that show any more is because of the musical guests?!

and i'm sorry, but they sounded *horrible* -- **NOT** their fault, but once
again, SNL does not know how to do sound for a rock band. after 25 years,
you would think they would figure it out, but in all the time i've been
watching SNL (andf that's from the *first season*) no one, no one, not the
rolling stones, and no, not SG, do they manage to make it sound reasonable.
poor chris sounded like he couldn't hear himself.

and also.. his hair was too bushy... it looks better spikey... but he looked
REALLY good in those band photo things they run at the beginning of the
show... matt, on the other hand, looked cute cute cute too!

anyway. flame away, but remember what i said: they sounded bad not
because of them, but because the mix sucked.

Damn, that sucked!! I felt that the snl performance was about as crappy as
i had ever seen SG...... 50 percent was the sound, the mixing was horrible
as usual for the show. Matt sounded like he was in another room, another
planet even. chris was just plain awful on pretty noose. to see him
straining like that made SG seem so weak, he is what holds them together.
BUT, that song is about impossible to sing anyway, i was wondering all
week how they were going to pull it off live.

just another great band in the long list of great bands to come off
sounding like shit on SNL!!

hope things get straight for lollapalooza....
by the way, has anyone heard chris sing since the tour was canceled last
year????

Subject: My take on DOTU
From: Ben Timberlake <btimlake@nwu.edu>

Just delete this if you don't feel like reading another fan's semi-review
of the album.

I have been guilty of playing this album over and _over_ again. It's
just too f*cking good to take out. Don't hurt me, but I hear some
definite zeppelin/beatles/rush/floyd in there. So much to the point that
I had to dig up a copy of "Over The Hills and Far Away" after listening
to that beautiful little sequence on "Zero Chance." I would have to say
that the songs to which Ben wrote the music are my favorites at this
time. "Switch Opens" and "Zero Chance" especially. Then again, I really
like "Rhinosaur," "Blow Up The Outside World," "Burden In My Hand," and
"Boot Camp." I don't know what I'm trying to say here because the entire
album rules. It's definitely a step beyond Superunknown. The band has
definitely taken the best of their previous albums, rolled it into a
ball, tossed in some experimentation, growth, and sheer power and turned
out a fireball that will become a staple of basic rock diet. If this
does not take the music world by its throat, I've lost faith in humanity.
The album took a couple days to grow on me, as with all SG albums, but
I've been playing it so much recently that I had to set a 24 hour period
during which I wasn't allowed to listen to it for fear of growing tired
of it. Granted, I was asleep for about 20 of those hours, but I am
thoroughly cured of any such fear. "Boot Camp"'s ending finally makes
sense to me and almost leaves me in tears _after_ the song is over.
"Boot Camp" is the only place I really hear any Pink Floyd, though maybe
a tiny bit on "Applebite." I can't really define the Rush aspect, but it
may be in the preponderance of first-person lyrics. I more appreciate
Rush's music than enjoy it, but none of that is evident on DOTU. The
Beatles influence kicks in on BUTOW, especially with the intentionally
vague lyrics: "Someone tried to tell me something."
I know everyone's probably sick of reading everyone else's review of the
album, but I'm trying to work up my ideas for an actual review i'm
supposed to write for the daily northwestern.

Anyway, I'm looking for 2 (max 3: because of quality issues) of you to

that later.)

If you're interested send me a note and I'll send you the 2! pages of
instructions this guy sent me. I'd prefer to deal with people I've dealt
with before. I know one of you works close to an international banking
center. :-)

BtW: I saw a boot video with Hiro last night. The '88 LA show. Too
funny!. I've never seen Hiro *perform* before. It was interesting. He's a
groove bassist. He doesnt bash around like Ben does. (will Ben do that
anymore?) It also was funny as hell to see him sing? :-) "Circle of Power".
He was mimicking chris's early *schtick* pretty well :-) Also on the tape
was SG's performance at GnR's Pay Per View show. It was sorta frightning to
hear "Hands All Over" with the camera panning out to show the full stage set
up...complete with the _Use Your Illusion_ album covers as side stage
banners.  <::shiver::>

OP>Oh man, it was great to see Soundgarden again, even if it had to be on
OP>SNL (I'm sorry, Jim Carrey turns my stomach).

I like Jim Carrey, but I wouldn't have watched it if Soundgarden
wouldn't have been on. I was disappointed that no one from Soundgarden
appeared in any of the sketches. Sometimes the guest band is in some
sketches. Oh well. I did like the Joe Pesi show where Mr. Carrey did
the Jimmy Stewart and the other guy did Jim Carrey. That was humor!

OP>I don't know if Chris didn't warm up before
OP>Pretty Noose or what, but it sounded a bit strained at first.

I thought he sounded pretty bad throughout the whole song. But he did
have his moments. Burden in My Hand was MUCH better.

OP> What is it about SG that makes us all feel so close to them? Maybe
OP>its because they seem like such regular guys (and from what Frank
OP>Kozik says they really are down to earth). Whatever it is, I actually
OP>feel nervouse for them when they perform, and proud of them
OP>afterwards. Is that weird, or do other people feel that way too? Its
OP>like I'm watching friends or family or something.

Yeah. I'm kinda like that. I have my visions of how my heroes are in
person, but I'm sure they are totally different than I would think, but
it seems that somehow I know them. It also seems that I know some
people on this list...while I was watching SNL, I though, "I'll bet I
know some of the people there." because some people from this list
were suppose to go. But I've never really met anyone from this list.
I hope that changes soon.

OP> I really loved Frank Kozik's comments. I hope we hear from him
OP>often.

Maybe he'll join the list. ;) Maybe he'll put a good word in and get
Soundgarden to join. Maybe Ms. Silver already joined to keep up with
what Shroom's doing to Chris' naked body.

Well, I watched them last night. Chris seemed like he was real nervous at
first or something because it took him awhile to get into "Pretty Noose". Did
you notice how strained his voice was when he was singing "I caught the moon
today..."? It sounded pretty harsh. But as the song went on, I started
recognizing the vocal melody a lot more. Kim was great on guitar! The guitar
sounded exactly the same as the recording, if you ask me. By the time they
got to "Burden in my Hand" they seemed more relaxed. That song was performed
really well. Oh yeah, and Matt was singing on "Pretty Noose"!!! I liked that
part at the end when the cast and Soundgarden were standing around, and Matt
and Ben like high-fived, it looked pretty...rehearsed, or something. I wonder
if the producer made them do that...Well, who cares? Matt looked great!! =]

alittle on "Pretty Noose" but over all...they kicked ass. Matt was

Ben was into it in "Burden In My Hand" I also caught at the very
end...Matt and Kim do a high five....and Jim Carrey and Kim hug one

I just might have converted another person to Soundgarden. A friend's
parents went away for the weekend, and a bunch of us were hanging out
there. He brought his stereo downstairs and cranked it. One problem.
All he had was a bunch of dance crap. I was sitting there, and finally I
went home to get some CD's. I know you can't just flood these people
with good music, because they will not bite. You have to be subtle, and
use some strategy. So I tried to think of one SG song he would HAVE to
like. Big Dumb Sex! What 12-24 North American Male could not like this
song? I played it loud for him, and he loved it! He was singing right
along with the chorus. Anybody else have stories about converts? I have
influenced MANY people in the way of Soundgarden.
Speaking of Big Dumb Sex, did you know that they released an "Instore
Clean" version of Louder than Love, which did not include BDS?

the first one was friday night, iw as at some big stadium type thing, more
like a basketball court, the 4 guys from sg were down on the court, i was
waaay high up in the stands, and i guess they were doing a meet and greet
kind of thing, and for some reason i wasn't going to go... but i did anyway.

and they were really cute and nice and i chatted with them for a while ...
chris and matt especially... and i remember showing them my tattoo (it's
nothing sg related, and it's not in any kind of interesting place, i guess
it was just a lame attempt on my part to make convo)...

if you think that was lame and/or weird, last night i had a dream that eddie

tonight, and they will be on the page as soon as I can possibly get
them there.

Subject: Hey...

I missed you, list :) I had the best damn weekend of my life... I went
to Virginia... I don't think they like Soundgarden very much there, I
went to Busch Gardens on Saturday and didn't see one person in a
Soundgarden shirt.. maybe I was looking in all the wrong places? Maybe
I was too preoccupied with staring at the back of Mr. Champagne's head
:) Anyway, I brought my TV with me for the sole purpose of watching
Soundgarden on SNL on the way back home on the bus... and it pissed me
off that I had to wait so damn long to see 'em too cause I was exhausted
and wanted to go to sleep.. course, you can't sleep on a bus, just
doesn't work :) I bet no one thought Pretty Noose was as bad as I
thought it was, and none of it can be placed on Soundgarden or SNL's
sound crew... I was watching it on this tiny B&W tv, and the station was
fading out so I couldn't really get a picture and the TV speaker didn't
really allow for definition so I could just hear the notes and that was
about it. I couldn't hear Chris straining his voice, any of that.. But
I came across a strong signal when Burden In My Hand came on, and I
thought they sounded great, and it looked pretty cool too :) I couldn't
tell if the sound was shitty anyway because I was watching it on a TV
with a completely shitty speaker. Hopefully my mom remembered to tape
it :) And they're going to be on 120 minutes tonight...! If it weren't
for this list, I wouldn't have known that :) Thank you thank you thank
you :) My bus passed within a half hour of New York City last night,
that's the second closest I've ever been to Soundgarden :) I mean, they
WERE in New York last night right?? For Saturday Night LIVE? Or maybe
it's really Saturday Night Taped and they're lying? I've never fully
understood how that works. Oh well. :)

I've listened to the record a couple of times now, and it seems
like the anger is not the same as it used to be. I know that is a
horribly constructed sentence, but the way the band (chris especially)
conveys their anger or intenseness on dotu is really different to how
they play slaves and bulldozers or the way chris screams on limo wreck. I
guess it just isn't (to me) as in-your-face on dotu. of course, ty cobb
and no attention are upfront, but they don't seem the same as mailman or
new damage, where you can feel trapped in their anger at the world.

maybe it is because the music isn't quite as hypnotic or
something, but more melodic. even the lyrics from blow up the outside
world don't seem as angry as they could be when you hear chris singing
them, but more melancholy (maybe the killer hook is blinding me?).

just to add a smaller rant to what has become a somms diatribe
against pea-brained music journalists, I was reading in kerrang (which I
originally thought was an ok music publication) their review of the
pretty noose single. most of it was ho-hum, but my jaw hit the floor when
the guy says that soundgarden take four minutes to do what the
*wildhearts* do as an intro. the wildhearts?? can any british listers
fill me in? I have seen the band on the front cover of kerrang from time
to time, but I didn't realise that kerrang was so intent on building them
up. I'll eat my hat if the wildhearts can play pn as an intro to one of
their (most probably) shithouse songs.

Subject: a nice night was had by all...

had a good night last night, because the independant record store
here in brisbane (skinnys) had a midnight opening to release the new
album. I went bowling before so as to stay awake, and only bowled two
games of about 120 each (quit laughing perlman). the store actually
opened at ten to midnight, since it was a little cold and the store
manager is not a mean person :)

they had both the digipak and normal edition of the album, so it
was time to make a choice. I picked the normal one, on account of it
looking more sturdy and, to my eye, better. littlejoe, of course, went
for teh limited edition, with no condsideration to my arguments. btw,
where were you lee? didn't you see me in my kickstand uniform? and what
of you jackhammer? were you there?

anyway, we got a free poster with the cd, which is a really cool
photo of the band sitting at a table. unfortunately it is all folded up,
probably by some dumb record rep who doesn't know better. joe and I
entered the contest to win a replica kim-guitar (guild something or
other), all their albums, both videos and a shirt. hopefully one of us
four brisbane sommsters will win. upstairs they had a chef cooking
sausages and hamburgers, and he looked a tad lonely, so we cheered him up
by eating a couple of burgers. all in all, it was a cool night :)

btw, I don't like the artwork on dotu as much as I like
superunknown, but it should grow on me. what do you all think?

Sounds like the Club Lingerie video, which I just got today.
Pretty amazing to see the change in Chris from this show
to last night's SNL (even before the hairstylist turned

And Chris singing that little bit of Working Man, well,

Subject: SNL performance/120 Minutes

Ok. What I have to say isn't going to be anything you guys have not heard
before. Chris's voice was strained and painful sounding on SNL during
Pretty Noose. Period. Don't put the blame on anyone else. Chris also looked
like he was in a lot of pain while singing. He sounded like Bob Dylan or
something. But I must say that the rest of the band during Pretty Noose did
a bang up job. What really impressed me was Burden in My Hand. Great job
Chris, Kim, Matt and Ben. Very nice. It was so smooth and natural. I just
got done watching 120 Minutes. It was very entertaining. Also Matt Pinfield
interviewed them for a long time so it was really a good night. Pinfield is
a weird dude man. What was with that S&M statement he made to them? Plus,
Chris and Kim were at times pretty funny. For example Matt Pinfield said that
they were really good friends with Metallica. Kim then blurted out that it
was not like they were fishing buddies or anything. Just the way he said that
made me laugh out loud. You gotta see it. Later on Chris talks about video
imagery and he makes this great "fork" comment which I laughed at.
The one bad thing about the interview was that Matt and Ben weren't a part
of it. They deserved to be there. I was really looking forward to seeing
what those guys had to say. Anyway, Chris and Kim pretty muched talked about
everything : Lollapalooza (they talk a LOT about this), Mettalica, their CD
Plus "Alive in the Superunknown", Frank Kozik, music videos, the Internet,
touring, and their fans. It is pretty much what any Soundgarden fan could
have asked for. Can't wait to hear all of your comments.
