well, i have been listening to the 10 tracks played on the seattle radio

SEATTLE AREA READERS: the new issue of the Rocket has a review of the

blasphemous NME and lukewarm Spin and RS reviews. This guy gets the point.

I finally saw Pretty Noose on MTV. PN made #16 on the top
20 MTV video countdown this week. Idalis(the VJ) went on and on about
how Mariah Carey's latest fell nine spots, blah, blah, blah. Then
she said "And now, on the UPSIDE of things..." I was sure that it was
some weakly clever allusion to the album title, but the next words out
of her mouth were "George Michael." After I recovered from my killing
frenzy, I decided to keep MTV on, just in case. And then, there it
was - #16! I love this song. Esp. the part where Chris sings
"Common Ruse" - I don't know, it just gets me.

Regarding:The logos on Pretty Noose Video,Nudie Bars, and unbridled hatred
of music reviewers...

There was a lot of discussion pertaining to the appearance of the logos at
the end of the PN vid, here's the deal. You can thank Kim Thayil.it was at
his request that they where included. He felt it would be a nice,
personal way to give true fans a sense of continuity from the older
albums. The guys in SG do really care about their history and an on-going
sense of connection with where they came from and are going. For a band of
their current magnitude, this is a pretty cool thing.Synchronistically, the
round shape of the BMF logo fit in perfectly with the "round" and "eye"
motifs, and provided a real nice little twinge at the end.
It was meant as a personal touch by the band for older fans. This leads me
into the current brouhaha about the negative review in NME.You gotta
remember, music critics are the lowest form of life on earth.Their impact is
so out of proportion to reality..I mean, how the hell can some geek at
NME,who is probably inordinately proud of his pathetic 300 word a week
"career" have any claim as to talent or credibility against such a
solid, long term consistently great creative effort of 4 people like
Soundgarden. This twit exists solely to toot his own horn, and was probably
jerking off to pictures of Gary Numan when SG was writing and exploring
their first songs.Music criticism is totally invalid, and any efforts at it
should be left solely to the only people that matter to the process-the
musicians themselves, and those who the music was meant for-you.This same
guy probably has a hard-on a yard long for the current round of dreck being
pushed on us as genius(Lets say...Oasis).Being lucky(or unlucky) enough to
have been in the unusual position of having dealt with both groups of
people professionally and in person,I will tell you that the worst
Soundgarden effort,in terms of real
thought,perception,meaning,intent,message,history,whatever you would
consider "real" far surpasses anything that dribbles forth from the current
wonder-hit cretins in Oasis,or whoever looks "really cool" right now.I have
been in the Alternative and Mainstream music business for 15 years now,all
the way from working the door at punk dives to making a huge budget video
with a platinum-selling band, and believe me,shit like Oasis will come and
go,while real bands like SG are here forever.Plus, for all their braggadacio
about being tough 'rockers',those Oasis guys are weeds, but personally,I
wouldn't want to go at it with Ben.My advice about this NME loser, ignore
him and within 6 moths both he and his sheep-fondling Brit-pop 'pals' will
crawl back under the rock they came from.

PS.The "nudie bar' in the PN video is the bar at the OK hotel in Seattle,I
just installed a little stage...

I just got my vinyl copy of DOTU. No big deal since everyone

Is anyone like me and are keeping the vinyl sealed? I know you
could say I'm anal and "not a real fan", but I've heard the album once
already and I am teasing myself with the tuesday CD realease. So why
not keep it sealed? I'm planning on keeping it framed next to my colored
Flower vinyl (also still sealed, I have the CD).

Yesterday, I got a good laugh. I heard BadMoterScooter on the

they would have used it as inspiration for the Badmoterfinger title . . .
but what do I know, I'm just a fan.

     CMJ New Music Monthly
Review of Down On The Upside by Megan Frampton

As soon as Superunknown was released, long-time Soundgarden
fans could finally be proud of their band, knowing that the
kings of the rock groove could also write an excellent song,
as epitomized by the breakthrough hit "Black Hole Sun." And
the idea holds on Down On The Upside: When the band
accomplishes both groove and melody, as on "Zero Chance" or
the rocking "Rhinosaur," there's nothing better.
"Rhinosaur"'s groove is massive, with the stairstep guitar
riffs and abrupt changes in rhythm that guitarist Kim Thayil
adores. Chris Cornell's voice is in good form as well; he's
been shrieking less and less since the band's debut EP, and
concentrating lately on his lower register, opening up the
breadth rather than the height of his vocal cords. So as
Soundgarden continues to tantalize with its growing
songwriting talent, there are, as usual, a few groove-only
moments that go nowhere ("Applebite", "Never The Machine
Forever" and "Never Named"). Thankfully, the musicianship
is, also as usual, so superb as to go almost unnoticed; Matt
Cameron's drumming is perfect, always powerful but never
heavy-handed. Thayil's guitar is also more understated than
usual, and judging by the number of good songs that bassist
Ben Shepherd co-wrote with Cornell, the latest addition to
the band is proving to be as essential as the three original
members. Down On The Upside is neither an attempt to cash
in on the band's past success, nor a return to older, less
melodic efforts; rather, it's a satisfying continuation of
the band's slow maturity without any fuss or hoopla. File
Under: Classic rock, the way it oughtta be. Recommended if
you like: Temple Of The Dog, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin

I found an article in the Thursday Chicago Sun-Times sports section (I
should say my husband found it, since I don't read the sports) about
Dennis Rodman's birthday party and guess who sang happy birthday to
this overrated ego-maniac - none other than Eddie Vedder! Now mind
you, they aren't friends or anything, Dennis Rodman just likes Pearl
Jam.
Here's my Soundgarden content: If Chris Cornell, or any of the other
members of SG for that matter, ever show up to sing Happy Birthday to
some overinflated sports figure I swear I will stop listening to them.
Christ, this is the kind of thing people desperate for publicity do,
or who are afraid they're losing it. Unless they were personal friends
with someone (and its pretty unlikely they'd be personal friends with
overexposed, no class sports figures) I seriously doubt that
Soundgarden would do this kind of birthday gig.
I'll probably get flamed by you sports fans out there, but this just
cracked me up. I'll shut up now.

Howdy-

I have been to the OK Hotel, in fact, I've seen Hater there, but you see,
they made it to look like a nudie bar. That was the point, for with all
intent and purposes, they were at a nudie bar. That's all of the point that I
was trying to make. Not the location itself, but the genre of bars that they
were at. As a general rule, there are no women dancing nude(or as close to
it as the censors at MTV and the FCC will allow) around on stage at the OK
Hotel as in the video. I just wanted to clear things up from my perspective.

well not exactly, it was more of a french expression that can't and
shouldn't be translated), there was a nice big picture of Soundgarden in
it. Needless to say I cut out the article! It was about how the original
version of Pretty Noose had to be censored 'cause of the dead girl in it.
There was also a mention of Frank Kozik getting feedback and stuff from the

Another thing, I went to Sam the Record Man, they didn't have any of
the singles, but they had a special promo copy of the CD and they set me so

story was told to me by my friend) Mark ( gator) had a gotten into a fight
with his girlfriend and he was pretty upset! I guess the girlfriends best
friend came over to talk to gator and try to act as a mediator between the
two.It didnt work! Gator ended up raping the best friend and in the process
killed her.. so HE FREAKED OUT and put her in his surf board bag and took her
to the desert to bury her...which he did. bury her in the desert
I guess a couple of weeks went by and he finally could'nt take it anymore and
told a priest what he had done. soon after that he was arrested.

that line in the song is too creepy for me...." I left her in the sand, just
like a burden in my hand'

I wonder,(but do seriously doubt it!) if Chris (CORNELL **SHROOM** HAHA)was
writting about this when he wrote the song..apparently he was a skater
himself.

any comments?

Subject: SG on 120 minutes!!

while on the 120 minutes home page at mtv's website i found this info:

"This Sunday, Matt Pinfield hosts 120 Minutes on May 19th, with
special guests Soundgarden."

I hope this clears up some confusion. If you guys already know this, sorry.
I just thought i'd let you know.
