Speaking of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, they're among the bands whose music is
run through a collection of vintage synthesizers on a new album called "The
Moog Cookbook", concocted by Roger Manning, formerly of Jellyfish, now with
Imperial Drag, and his partner, Brian Kehew. The keyboards employed are such
old analog faves as Moogs, Arps, Hammonds, and Farfisas, and the tunes
transformed include Pearl Jam's "Even-Flow," Green Day's "Basket Case," REM's
"The One I Love", and this one, Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun." We're hoping
to have the "Moog Cookbook" masterminds playing live on "The Week In Rock"
this weekend, so do tune in.

Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Pete Droge, and Presidents Of The United States Of
America are among the people donating money to Idaho's Nez Perce Indians, to
help them buy back tribal artifacts from the Ohio Historical Society, by June
1st. The tribe has already raised some 500,000 of the 608,000 dollars needed
to buy back a collection of 150-year-old hide shirts, dresses, saddles,
moccasins, and other items the tribe had sold to a missionary back in the
1840s, for 57 dollars and 90 cents, now the minimum amount the tribe is
asking patrons to donate. The collection was eventually donated to Ohio's
Oberlin college, which in turn donated it to the Ohio Historical Society,
which has loaned it out to the Nez Perce tribe for the past 15 years. Two
years ago, however, the society asked for the collection back, and the tribe
began negotiating to buy it. The society set its June 1st deadline last
December. In addition to donations, a number of local bands are planning to
play a benefit concert for the Nez Perce cause on May 25th, at Pioneer Park
in Lewiston. For more information about the Nez Perce Indians, you can call

I flaked out of my ride (bicycle) home tonight,
thanks to heavy winds and rain, and instead drove
(after bribing my wife to come and get me) by a few
local music stores. Between the two Tower stores we
went to, I counted 17 copies of the vinyl DotU.
Two other independent stores were cd-only, but
one yielded up the PN red-box single. The last
stop, an independent new/used vinyl/cd place,
had 7 vinyl DotU's on display w/ more (claimed)
in the back.

I also spied 2 of the Limited BMF wooden box
releases at one Tower. The same Tower had a couple
of these a while back (I bought and returned one
so that I could report on its contents to our
discography keeper) and, while my memory is not that
great, one of the two looked very familiar. It was
shrinkwrapped with the label stating that it was limited
to 1000 copies worldwide loose inside the shrinkwrap.
I wonder if they never sold these and just dragged them
out again because DotU was about to be released.
$80 for BMF (no SOMMS, no extra anything) in a fancy
package seems *only mildly*:) excessive.

Does anyone know when and if Soundgarden are coming over to Britain
for a few gigs? The thing is that Chris Cornell was quoted as
saying that they wouldn't be coming over bearing in mind the Brits
obsession with oasis etc, and would wait and see how well DOTU would
do.

Well, I think having Pretty Noose at No. 13 in the main charts is a
pretty good indication that not everyone has forgotten them over
here.

By the way, last year I designed a Soungarden Cover for an art design
project and I labelled it "Garden of Sounds" (not to sound too
bigheaded, but I got an A for it). It shows a guitar
fretboard amongst flowers and plants an' stuff. Well, the point is
that I was going to get it printed out onto a tee-shirt as a one off,
only I think it would be a good idea to print a few and sell them to
fellow SOMMS users. That might be a bit difficult to do but it
would be pretty cool. We'll see!

By the way, just as a point of discussion, if you had to pick 20
soundgarden tunes to put on a Greatest Hits albumn, what would they
be?

all annoyed at the album review but this is just the old we did not
really pick an appropriate reviewer he seemed to think they represented
the worse of heavy metal and grunge which he did not seem to like anyway.
however there was an article on sg in the same issue which seemed
to be favourable and in nme tradition articles are written by appropriate
jouranalists this has happened extremely often i have seen articles
basically saying brilliant album from x and in the reviews x's new album
scores 1 or 2 and is slated.
melody maker had a review in which it was highly recommended but
the reviewer did seem to be an sg fan who was slightly mourning what they

To the Black hole Sons,
Forget about being Down on the Upside: I'm already there. Well,
I'm actually Down Under. That is, I'm Australian. Anyway, just thought
I'd intro myself to ya'all and send a write up I've got on comment from
the Boys on their latest album.

Chris Cornell describes the musical growth of Soundgarden thus:
"I think it's down to a process of metamorphisis of four different
writers continually putting the music in the pot. Everybody changes a little
bit, you know, as do their influences at the time, and it mutates the band
 pretty heavily." (Chris Cornell)
"Year by year and record by record, we have gone through this
process of trying to dial into what we want to hear ourselves sound like
at that moment." (Chris Cornell)

Specifically, and in relation to the sound's of 'Down on the Upside':
"The roughness wasn't a point of making a dirtier, more street
version of what we usually do. It's about getting more accurate with
recording." (Chris Cornell)
"This time we kept it from moving into 'over-dub' central. We did
everthing short of making it live." (Kim Thayil)
Appelbite-"Some piano and there's some little bits of trinkets
and whatnot of percussion and things that we've probably never used
before. We did a lot of varied trips with amplification and a lot with
vocals. I don't think there's many, maybe two or three songs, where the
vocals aren't being sang straight into a normal microphone, the normal
way. We did a lot of strange stuff that way that we've never done
before." (Kim)
"I sometimes percieve the record as having a dual nature. It
keeps listeners on their toes and lets them know they're not getting the
same album over and over." (Kim)

Well, enjoy!

This is relevant to the list, really it is. :) Anyway, just thought
that you might like to know Burden In My Hand is now getting airplay - I
always like to know if the radio stations are playing Soundgarden. I
heard it last night, I guess they played it for the first time on
Tuesday. Also Z-Rock is giving away copies of DOTU - if you hear a song
from it and are the 25th caller (i think this goes on yesterday and
today) you win a copy of DOTU on cd. I'd call but it'd take them longer
to send it to me than it would if I waited til Tuesday and bought it
then. Besides, the place I was going to buy it from needs my business -
I have to go there, they sold me DOTU vinyl four days early, I owe them
at least that much. :)

That seems to be one of the biggest problems with the NME, they continuously
slate bands which the reviewers don't like.. They criticised Soundgarden at
Reading for being American and for not being Britpop, basically. The NME only
caters for one set of opinions, they are highly unlikely to ever hire anyone
who would give a fair review of anything that's not Britpop.. Have you ever
read some of the reviews they do for Britpop bands, deifying the fuck out of
them, trying to turn them inot legends... Needless to say, I have long since
given up reading the NME.. I recommend everyone on this list to do the same.

In fairness although I ignore the reviews as often they are not worth the
paper they are printed on. I find the articles extremely good partly
because they usually get somebody with some interest in the band

From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 <bcheyney@cs.strath.ac.uk>

At last I've heard some of the new stuff! I was at the listening
party in Glasgow last night, where they played the whole album, and I
was not disappointed! I think I'm the last member of this list to
state that claim, and the last to hear the album. Oh, well. I'm
going to go down to see if anywhere in Glasgow has the vinyl, which I
doubt, from reports of it's scarcity.

By the way, Seth - those clear vinyl editions are to be sold in
independant stores ONLY, as far as I know. This was mentioned last
night. I think. I did drink a lot so it may have come from
elsewhere...

There was competitions, and for the first time in my life I won
something! The first prize was a gold disk for DOTU (which of course,
isn't available yet), which I duly missed out on as I expected. The
draw for second prize came up and it was my number - 130. Holy shit!
I won a copy of the single (which I already have of course), a promo
package with the poster from the single, postcards, a bio etc, a
fucking cool T-shirt, black with Soungarden and Down On The Upside
written in yellow print on the front and back, and the biggy -

a Chris Cornell autographed dollar bill!!!!!!!!!!!!

which is a bit pointless for me as I live in Scotland and can't even
spend it! Sheesh, at least I could use a pound note ;-)

I have to pick it up next week, I think I'll have it framed ;-) fuck
know's what to do with it, I'm not big on autographs - it's only
someones name, it doesn't really hold much mystery to me. But it's
cool to have I suppose. I think I'd prefer to be there when he signs
it!

$5.25 per ticket so they can take your order over the Internet. Pardon
my french people, but that's a fucking crock! I can't believe I just
paid $21 for a process that required no human intervention...

Anyway, that being said, this was a hell of a lot easier than camping out

TicketMaster does suck...I should be at Charlestown to cover GVSB (if
they're still on at that point), but I'll definitley head for the main stage in
time for the best act of all.

On another note, did any of you who have the PN cd single notice the
error in the PN lyrics? It says something like:

Eat the fruit
And kiss the fruit
And kiss the snake goodnight

Kinda strange, eh?

People, lighten the fuck up! :-)

This is so funny! The man without question doesn't know what he's talking
about. He's just trying to sell papers.

>DOWN ON THE UPSIDE
>by Johnny Cigarettes

nice name :-) wanker! :-)

>When their children ask what they did in the grunge cred wars of the early
'90s,

um, it wasn't grunge...it was indie cred wars. Credibility is everything to
the indie rock movement. Look how fast Green Day were labeled sell outs
(whether they deserved it or not). Jesus Christ, look what happened to
Jello Biafra! The indie community labeled him! a sellout! For the
uninformed; Jello Biafra was the former leader of the Dead Kennedy's.
(Corporate Deathburger!) Some indie kids also beat him into a coma because
they thought he was a sell out! There is a huge difference! The indie rock
group (sonic youth and their minions) pretty much hate the grunge brigade
because they got all the pub and the dough. Which is sorta strange because
"N" being an indie pop group where labeled grunge.

>Soundgarden will claim that they were conscientious objectors.

nope, they were not shallow enough to get involved.

>In truth though, they spent those years with their heads ducked behind
Pearl Jam,

If you recall, before their was a Pearl Jam, there was a Soundgarden. And
even before there was a Pearl Jam their was a collaboration by the name of
Temple of the Dog.

> Stone Temple Pilots

Oh! Take that back! Stone Tempah Peirogis. NEVER!

doesn't Stone Tempah Peirogis sound like some food stand at the state fair?
Like it should be set up right next to the crack stand.

>Arse In Chains

neat! I like the spelling.

> and several hundred Tools, Wools, Pools, Plods and Podgegrinders,

never heard of them.

I think what mr. cigarettes is trying to say is SG was never a singles band.
The other groups were. That did change with superunknown. As those of you
with 6 :-) different version of FoBD can attest.

>dodging the kind of flak from 'corporate roc'-spitting purists that fatally
stigmatised so many.

But shitty bands like Stone Tempah Peirogis, Bush and Silverchair deserve
it! Being corporate creations with no intention of making good music. They
were *only* in it only for the money....In silverchair's case, not their
own, but there parents and record company.

>Piece of piss,

hey j...here's one for your page. Would this piece be a solid? Is there a
piss pie? someone from the UK, help me out.

>since they'd been around a couple of years longer
>than the rest, had the stamp of approval by formerly being on Sub Pop,
>and didn't sell too many records to be fashionable.

wasn't....the N word on Sub Pop? How many copies did ...N.... oh well,
whatever, nevermind.

>And yet, Soundgarden were probably never truly grunge.

nope. The only true (music and style) grunge band was mudhoney, tad and
maybe the fluid. Soundgarden's only crime was being from Seattle. And
liking those great goth bands of the early/mid 80's.

>They tried, and are still trying, damn hard to be grunge;

grunge is dead. The media created it...labeled it the new god...then
discarded it like today's trash. A movie such as HYPE! can't even get a
distribution deal! The media is saying the seattle scene is old and boring
and not worthy of their commercial exploitation! Jesus Christ, it's only
been 4.5 years since the N word released that album.

>to endorse its style, attitudes and hip currency,

um, since they were around when this 'hip'ness was being created...don't you
think they'd be allowed to show what they added to it?

>while lacking the character,

you shouldnt say this if you cant back it up.

>visceral impact and

see above.

>emotional depth

SG's music is very emotional. I would compare it to 'soul' music.

>that originally marked out the genre. Oh yes.

they are one of the originators. Bad argument.

>See, if the central characteristics of the grunge attitude were
>schizophrenic self-loathing, angst-laden self-pity and bored nihilism,

nope...it was lyrics that spoke to a generation. It was guitars cranked up
to 11. It was...our fucking movement god damn it! It wasn't a fucking baby
boomer creation! It was a musical rebellion to the fluff being handed to us
by radio and MTV (which continues). It basically said the fucking world
wasn't a shiney happy movement. We were fucking sick of being happy. Of
being told to only look at the bright side while the world around us was
crumbling. A rather large segment of the US population was feeling this
way. Hey 5,000,000 Nirvana fans cant be wrong.

>then Soundgarden, on the evidence of 'Down On The Upside' at least,
>are fake grunge,

They were never grunge to begin with. At least musically.

>played by a competent, but unremarkable heavy rock band.

oh my god! a prop!

"unremarkable"? Hey you shouldnt say that. They are starting to sound like
the beatles. Which is what the entire brit-pop movement is based on (can
you say oasis and blur).

>Throughout this record the mood of dark, demon-wrestling introspection
continually rings hollow.

This is the writers style. Would you say the same about Edgar Allen Poe?
Was he selling out because he wrote morbid, dark stories?

>From the abstract torture imagery of the opening single, "Pretty Noose",

hehe...he must of seen the US video :-)

Kozik is a God! :-)

to the fifth-form sulk sentiments of 'Blow Up The Outside World' ("Nothing
>seems to kill me, no matter how hard I try" - try a shotgun, you dick),

witty. really....I'm surprised he didn't mention which side of his head he
wants blown off.

>it's all adolescent fantasies of angst,

I'll almost agree to this.

> where in fact they
>don't know the meaning of the word.

you have to be 'dead' to really know, right?

>They're essentially bread-and-butter rockers,

but prove some kind of '4 Real' point in a
>genre where you are only as great an artist if you're a 'f---ed up' artist,

> Vedder-esque deep-voiced whine just leaves you cold,

who came first, Vedder or Cornell? Or better yet, Daltry or Plant. Both
very different singers.

>betraying little real emotion behind
>the classy Marlboro metal croak.

marlboro metal croak...nice, I like that one.

>Meanwhile there's the 65 minutes of intense, often turgid rock stodge to
plough through.

The emotion in CC's voice carries this album..some of the music is 70's rock
by numbers. Some of it is brilliant.

>It's all superficially well-crafted, a polished-mud sound decorated
>with such questionable affections as a mandolin (on a thrash
>metal track?, are you sure, sir?), Zep-esque folk tinges, and even a Moog
at one point.

the mandolin(banjo?) works well. The rest of his statement...Is almost
truthful. Though superficial isn't a word I'd use.

>When Soundgarden get experimental on us, they can be fleetingly engaging,
>as on the Baby Bird (!) style lo-fi of 'Applebite',

baby bird? Is this a UK group or expression?

>and the Stipean surrealism of 'Switch Opens'.

nope...that would be lennon surrealism. If only you knew this album was a
little brit pop..you might of enjoyed it more.

>And they can touch your heart when they sing from theirs, as on the atmospheric
>'Tighter and Tighter',

YES! It's a *LOVE* song... Oh yeah, it does remind me of Blind Dogs
crossed with Slaves and Bulldozers.

>or the sharply poetic, anti-love song 'Burden In My Hand'.

this is a great description of this song.

Elsewise, though, the tunes are workmanlike
>and unmemorable,

disappointed there's no black hole sun, eh?

>the sentiments shallow,

nope...I disagree. You've just described Bush and STP very well though.

and after 65 long minutes the overall feeling is like having waded through
an ocean of
>porridge. With no sugar.

yeah, there's no def leppard sugar coated pop gloss on this album.

>This may well sell by the boatload across the globe, of course,

and dare I say in the UK too...

but for most sharp British kiddies with a heavy heart, a sensitive
>soul and half a bullshit detector in their heads,

the brit poppers!!! Hey Lennon is dead! Find a new style to assimilate
into the next big thing.

>Soundgarden will say nothing to you about your life. Or theirs, come to
that. (3)

and after reading your review...you say nothing of any value either...did
you help sell magazines? That's all that matters.

Hey sommsters...

Well I am also a proud owner of DOTU on vinly.I bought it last night at Spin
records( in Carlsbad) they only had one copy left! but I did call around to
other stores and the only other record store that said that they had it was
Lou's( in luecadia). They told me that they had "plenty left". I guess there
is'nt many FANS in San Diego as I thought there were.pity! I have'nt listened
to it though> I don't have a turntable.I'll just have to wait until the
21st..( good things come to those who wait. Is'nt that how that stupid
saying goes?)I don't want to wait!I want it now!

I just thought I would throw this out to everyone.........

Does anyone have ULTRA MEGA OK on vinly?
if you do you might know what I am talking about if you don't well it's justa
trivia bit!

etched into the vinly in small letters very close to the label is a saying on
both sides. It reads:
A religous man might think were evil (side 1)
A rational man might think were religous ( side 2)

WOO HOO! I FINALLY SAW IT!!! It was right after my last final today
(one more on Monday...AAAAHHHHH!!!). I was determined that I wasn't
gonna leave the TV until I saw it. And then it came on. I was kinda
disappointed, though. But it's still a great video. I just didn't
like the way the whole beginning had the "ghost" images of whatever was
going on over top of the stuff. But then it got better at the end. It
was kinda funny that the Soundgarden video is censored, because I saw
the new George Micheal video before it, and it had half naked ladies,
and guys kissing and it was all gross. But anyway, I'm relieved now
that I saw it, and all in all, I hope I see it a few more
times...tomorrow.

In fact the morning after the vinyl was released I was going to work at the
