Howdy,

Just a note on the Billy Corgan issue. I was talking to a friend of
mine who did the interview with SG on KISW, and he added that the
impression he had was that Corgan was asking some fatherly advice of
Kim Thayil. And Kim basicly told him to fuck off. Causing the ever so
sensitive Corgan to run off crying into the waiting arms of his
therapist. Chris was bitching about the fact that he dosen't have
tickets to the Sonics playoff games. He said he was boycotting them
because of the pay-per-view.

That would be cool, I agree. Just where would a devoted fan meet? I
might suggest the birthplace of the coolest band on earth, Seattle.
First, it would be really cheap for me. Second, every true fan should
make the pilgrimage. That's just the way it is.

Hey, did anyone else realize that at the begining of the PN video, the
guys are at a nudie bar? I just thought I'd share this with the group.

Yeah, the carboard things, and they all seem to be of different widths too,
so some of them don't even fit in the cd-rack :) but they are still cool.
And the slimline cd cases that singles come in, they are just damn
annoying!! make em the same size so I can fit them in and at least read the
edge of them! :)

I'm a huge fan, been since '89, but spinning the vinyl yesterday was the
first I've heard of DOTU. Haven't seen the PN video and only heard a
snippet of the song on the radio last week.
Anyway, I was very impressed. I am a fanatic fan, but for some
strange reason it always takes a while for new SG stuff to really sink
in. Weird, I know, but maybe I'm just afraid to be let down. BUt, from

Subject: the satellite show, expensive hobbies, a change
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

I did listen to the satellite broadcast the other night, and
Soundgarden were funny as usual. The questions they were asked were
intoned as if being read from cue cards, though, so the dialogue
between the band and the audience was not very lively. For those of
you who were there in the studio, I have to agree with Vikki and
Caryn: stop making cute little references to it and tell us
everything. I taped it, so I will hopefully be able to transcribe it
for all to read next week, unless someone else is already doing this,
in which case please let me know.

I realized today just how much money I shell out for Soundgarden
music. The only non-music stuff I've ever bought are the 2 shirts I
have. Are there other bands that release so many different versions of
their singles around the world? It seems like every two days I'm
dropping down another $25 for something that I don't really need but
feel compelled to own anyway, just for collection's sake. All 3
"Pretty Noose" singles came in the mail today; the only thing I
haven't heard is the interview with Eleven, but just to be thorough I
bought both CDs and the colored 7" (I'm number 2807 of 5000). When I
think about it, do I really need 6 different versions of the "Fell On
Black Days" single? Is it necessary to go buy DOTU on vinyl when I
have it on CD? Of course it isn't, but I'll do it anyway.

Does anyone have any theories on the sudden flurry of band photos on
Soundgarden's material? The DOTU cover is the first to obviously
depict all four members, and the CD itself has a plain group shot
printed on it. The "Pretty Noose" singles are the same; all 3 versions
and the radio promo have the band shot on the front. I guess I kind of
miss the stuff that didn't so clearly have the band on it, like the
covers to Superunknown and any of its singles, because they always
featured cool graphics...

Along these lines, does anyone have any guesses as to the actual
identities of the four silhouttes on the DOTU cover? Let me clear
that up; we all know which four people they are, but what order are
they in? My guess is left to right: Kim, Ben, Chris, Matt.

This is, of course, open to debate.

I'd be willing to bet that it's Kim, Chris, Ben, and Matt, from left
to right. (I did bet someone, and I think it's high time he paid up)
When you look at the "Pretty Noose" single, Chris and Ben are standing
similar to the way that figures 2 and 3 are standing on DOTU. In
fact, it even looks like they could be wearing almost the same
clothing for both pictures.

My take on it was Kim, Chris, Ben, Matt.. Although I'm not so sure about which

Was the broadcast only 1 hour long or was it longer and if so,how much longer was it?I
was under the impression that the broadcast would playing all the songs off the new
album.the radiostation that delivered
the satellite broadcast was only one hour long including commercials.
I taped the show so I guess I recorded 45 to 50 minutes not including
commercials.I have not actually counted the number of songs I taped
but I guess it was about 6-9 songs.
Q94.9 stated that the broadcast would begin at 10 pm but it did'nt
begin until about 10:15pm.The station had just begun playing Smashing pumpkins
song Zero.about 30 seconds into it the Broadcast began.

Ok, I agree with you now. You can also compare to the photo on the
right hand inside cover, where ID's are easier to determine. You can
see Chris is wearing the long coat that matches with the 2nd figure on
the front cover.

my hat and shoes always match, is it luck?
i received an email on April 27 from a friend in Bogota, Colombia (i was in
college over there from 1993 to 1995). he said he had seen the new
soundgarden cd in a store (hes a soundgarden fan too, but he thought the cd
had already been released and emailed me thinking i already had it); but he
didnt have money so he didnt buy it. first thing i thought: this is
impossible, he must have seen the pretty noose single, so i emailed him with
the complete description of the single cover and the DOTU cover. he was in
the middle of finals so i didnt receive a response until today. he did see
the DOTU cd! he described the cover and said it was in a cardboard box
(digipak?????). he was surprised the release date was may 21. so this
colombian store got the digipak extremely early... and this guy didnt even
buy it (i wish i still lived there). he told me he would go and get it right
away so he must have it right now unless they already sold every copy they
had, which wouldnt be strange. how the hell does a south american record
store get a DOTU digipak and start selling it nearly a month before the
release date??? and why is it a store in bogota, colombia (where i lived
several months ago) and not in lima, peru (where i now live)?. someone?

ps. i finally saw the PN video last weekend on mtv latino (it premiered on
sunday). my second favourite soundgarden video. (black hole sun is first,
although i never really liked the song that much).

Subject: details, as requested!

Hey no problem, I'd love to tell you guys about the broadcast!

So, we got to the studio at about 5, and we went into this room full of
couches and bar stools. We listened to DoTU approx. 1.5 times. It's real
good, as I suppose you already know. There were about 40 people there, I'd
say. There was food and beer and soft drinks, all for free. Everyone was
drinking a lot of beer, except me because I'm not legally old enough, and
that is enough to stop me.
Then at about 6:50 we went into this room with a wooden floor that was
covered with pillows. There were also about 4 folding chairs in the back.
Behind every pillow was four headsets. So we hung out there for awhile and
the producer told us not to take pictures, etc.. Then my friend was like,
"It's Matt." And I look and Matt is 5 feet away from me. He came in through
this door in the back. At the front of this room was a booth with 2 sliding
glass doors. There was a table and 5 chairs in there. And a lava lamp was on
the table. There were lava lamps all over the studio. So, Matt goes into the
little booth. When he got to the front of the room he was like, "Hey". Then
the rest of the band did the same. We listened to the broadcast on the
headsets. During commercials the band would talk to each other, until about
halfway through, Ben and Matt opened the doors. Then they'd stick their heads
out and talk to us a bit. If you hear this chair squeaking on the broadcast,
it was Matt's. In case anyone wants to know, Matt Pinfield was at the head of
the table, Chris and Matt were on the left side (OUR left), and Ben and Kim
were on the right. Matt and Ben were sitting right next to the door, and
Chris and Kim were closer to Matt P..
After we sat through the Australian broadcast we had a meet and greet
session. We were allowed to get one object autographed, one picture taken
with the band (if you brought a camera) and then basically you were supposed
to leave. However, Matt offered to sign two things for me, and that was
pretty cool. We were talking about drumming and playing guitar for awhile,
and then the producer got mad at me and made me leave because other people
wanted to talk to the band.
I didn't actually talk to Chris. He kind of nodded at me, but that's about
it. Ben like mumbled "Hey", and Kim was joking around with me a bit. Of
course Matt was really nice. I'm sure if I had tried to talk with Chris he
would have been polite. He seems like it. When I was at Susan Silver's office
on Valentine's Day, he sent in this huge vase completely full of roses, so I
get the idea he's a pretty nice guy.
I guess some of you want to know what everyone was wearing. I didn't really
see Chris...sorry. When I get my film developed I'll tell you. I know he was
wearing a baseball cap. Matt was wearing khakis, a red plaid flannel
(buttoned, kind of giving off a farmer effect), and his denim jacket that's
kind of too small. Ben was wearing jeans and a denim jacket that wasn't too
small, and Kim was wearing a long sleeve t-shirt that said NOFX all down the
sleeves, and on the front. It was black with white writing.
How's that for detail? If anyone wants more just let me know!!!

Hello all,
I am just new on the net and Soundgarden was the first thing that I
looked up! I've never been around here before so I'll introduce myself
by saying that I'm Greg, I'm 16, from Ballarat in Australia and a
majorly big Soundgarden fan! I'm eagerly awaiting the 20th of May when
Down On The Upside is released down here. I've heard Pretty Noose and
Dusty and I reckon that if they are an indication of whats to come
then it should be an awesome album. Other bands I'm into are
Metallica, Alice In Chains, Sepultura, Monster Magnet, White Zombie
and more. My brother Brett who is 14 is also into Soundgarden so say
hi to him if you want, and one of my good buds named Robert is also a
Soundgarden man, who is into stuff like Black Sabbath, Cathedral and
Alice In Chains (he doesn't have e-mail so leave messages if you want
to.)

Okay I'll say goodbye now and look forward to hearing from
Soundgarden legends from all over the place!

From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

I know there are a bunch of you on the list from the Boston/Cambridge
area, so I figured this might be of interest to someone. I traveled
around in search of SG goodies today, and this is what I found:

Newbury Comics (The Garage, Harvard Square)
- -------------------------------------------
5 copies of "Pretty Noose" version 1 (CD5 box with poster). $10.
5 copies of "Pretty Noose" version 2 (CD5). $10.
They have no more copies of the DOTU vinyl but claim to have more on
the way.

Second Coming Records (Mass. Ave.)
- ----------------------------------
1 "Pretty Noose" radio promo CD5. $3.
1 "Spoonman" 12" on clear vinyl. Sealed. $7.
1 "Flower" EP on black vinyl. Sealed. $7.
1 BMF/SOMMS (this is the wrong BMF disc; it should say "DISK 1"). $25.
1 Superuninterview promo CD. $30.
A ton of Superunknown singles (some jewel boxes, some Digipaks).
More CD boots than anyone could ever want.

Mystery Train (Mass. Ave.)
- --------------------------
1 Seattle 1990 CD boot. $24.

In Your Ear (Mt. Auburn St.)
- ----------------------------
1 Truly "Heart and Lungs" CD EP. Sealed. $3.

Looney Tunes (Mass. Ave.) has nothing, and neither does Newbury Comics
in the MIT Student Center (though that's where I picked up DOTU on
vinyl earlier).

Hope this was useful to someone.

Personally, I think it's Kim, Chris, Ben, Matt. The third person could be
only Matt, because no one else in the band has quite such skinny legs. At

But Seth, the cover really doesn't show the band in full face... Its
just shadows and even we can't agree on which is which (Chris or
Matt). I love the vinyl, I love "RECORDS". Do you know I haven't
even played it yet!!! I have just open it and looked at it, drinking
in the colors, the images, the words (in large print thank God - I
hate trying to read the lyrics on a jewel box). No little CD will
ever take the place of a record and its jacket.

But back to the pictures - the picture on the inside taken by Ben is
wonderful - - it has so much going on. Look at it, where is the hall
way leading, why the number "7" on the TV screen. The colors are they
sunset or sunrise? The little squares with the tape(?) what does this
mean??

On the front cover the bottom half of the picture - the same trees
from "Superunknown" now burning with success, passion, what??? The
top of the picture more fire or those fireworks displays that look
like a waterfall!!! The back cover - an empty billboard from an old
theater - memories of past days when the band was just beginning and
playing in small out of the way bar!!!. Come on this jacket is filled
with so much graphics and images it will take a life time to come up
with all the idea that it produces in one's mind.

I feel that "Applebite" is the song that the cover art comes from.
The song has an eerier feel to it - like the cover it hides in the
shadows - "No one can save - The pure or the brave - No one can save
them at all - Grown and decay"

The little squares each represent a page of the liner notes for the
CD, though in the CD they're all in color, and every two-page spread
is one photo comprised of two "squares." The lyrics are printed on top
of these graphics. There are a total of 13 pages with the tape graphic
on them in the CD liner (6 2-page spreads and 1 page by itself), so 3
of the squares in the vinyl are duplicates.

You'll see that the liner notes are much different than they were in
Superunknown, where each page had a different background. Now every
page has the same theme. It does look very professionally done, very
slick...

Subject: I Got It (but still haven't seen PN vid)

I'm so excited! I called two record stores in town about the vinyl
last night. Disc Jockey didn't get any but said Wherehouse did.
Called them and they got 10 for $12.99. I asked if they hold stuff for
people and she said yes (really?). Guess no one around here really
cares. (That's why I need the list!) Goodie for me though. I went in
today and, of course, she didn't put it under the counter but at 12:00
p.m. today they had only sold three. I bought two (one for a friend
and one for me) and wasn't sure if I should get a second one for
myself. I guess with no one else buying them, I have time to go back
and get it if I want to.

Also, I taped (on a crappy boom box) a separate show that KISW (Seattle
99.9) put on the same day AND time as the satellite broadcast (which I
didn't get on tape because my partner flaked -- can anyone help me out
and copy it for me?). They played:

Cover Tunes:

1. Don't Care About You - Fear
2. Girl U Want - Devo
3. Can You See Me - Jimi Hendrix
4. Come Together - The Beatles
5. I Can't Give You Anything (i think) - The Ramones

European B-Sides/Rarities:

1. Fresh Deadly Roses
2. Cold Bitch
3. She's A Politician
4. Exit Stonehenge
5. A Re-mix of Spoonman (without the spoons)
6. Heretic
7. Blind Dogs
8. Sub Pop Rock City

DOTU:

1. Pretty Noose
2. Rhinosaur
3. Dusty
4. Blow Up the Outside World
5. Burden in My Hand
6. Applebite
7. Never the Machine Forever
8. Tighter and Tighter
9. No Attention
10. Boot Camp

And comments and stuff from the guys in between the songs and
commercials. They are so funny! Seth asked me to type up their
comments, which I will do. It may take a while, because I'm swamped
at work (oh yeah, than why I am posting to the list when I have so much
to do? I have my priorities, dammit!), but it will get done.

That's why I would like the national one, because I heard pieces of it
running back and forth trying to tape one and listen to the other. I
caught Chris saying, "do what you fucking want," which was just
priceless. And of course, the happy little comment, "my dancing
partner threw up." I thought it was Chris, but read it was someone else.

Okay, one more thing for now. Anyone else have trouble getting a
response from PJ Starr on requesting Sg compilation videos? I haven't
heard back and it's been a few days. I guess I'll just have to make
repeated requests. Probably all the referrals from the list, eh?

If anyone responds to anything I said, please e-mail me directly. Thanks.

Hey no problem. Besides, I probably owed everyone on this list a detailed
description of the event! Hope everyone is satisfied! If anyone wants more
info, just let me know! Oh and you asked earlier about the environment of the
studio. Like that one studio audience member said, it was stuffy. Really hot.
There was a fan in there but the producer wouldn't let us turn it on because
it was too loud! We put it on during songs and commercial breaks--basically
just whenever we all had the headsets off. Well, that's it for now!

I, for one, will not miss you and your comments Fleur. If there is (was)
any inarticulate, vapid, worthless member of this list, it was you.

Sommites,
Can someone please pick up a copy of dotu on vinyl for me? Just email me
and we can make the arrangements. My local record store said they were
going to get the album on vinyl but there was some kind of delay. I can't
believe this is happening. Cd now gave me some crap about there could be a
wait because it's limited edition. I have to get this album. Anyway on a
more introspective note, in regards to the dumbass rolling stone reviewer.
Remember this, these are the same guys who called superunk a Led Zepplin
tribute album. Let me drown mabye but 4th of july? Thease are also the
same bastards that think that alannis morrisette is an actual musician. So
lets not get all bent out of shape over that one. Number two mabye sg
didn't break new ground on the new album, but lets us all not forget that
totd didn't break any new ground either but it's one of the greatest
albums of all time. Number two ultramega ok wasn't all that innovative
either but it still gave us btw. Louder than love was an excellent hard
rock album not as eclectic as experimental as superunk but still a great
record. Bmf imho with the exceptions of jcp and slabd wasn't anywhere near
as innovative as superunk but I think and I also think that alot of you
would agree it was still one of the greatest albums ever. My point here is
sg doesn't have to reinvent rock music as we know to make an incredible
album. Just the fact that Ben alot of songs shows the band moving in a new
direction, those of us that have heard hater and show me know that besides
songs like half and head down ben just likes to rock. Irregardless it's
not neccessary to redifine music for sg to make a new album. But remember
this 95%+ people on the list have said they didn't really lik or think
much of the album first off. I hated btw, fresh tendrills, fourth of july,
jcp, limo wreck etc etc when I first heard them. Months went by before I
put back in the player and dropped a load at our boys musical geinus. The
album hasn't been out for a week yet. Don't fret over this whole new
ground thing. Besides everyone who has heard it so far likes it and I know
you guys aren't bhs singing hootie loving teeny boppers. So I can't wait
    to hear it.

as you may have already gathered lee, the australian interview
was different to the american (and canadian) interview. because costa
does the 3 hours of power (metal show) out of brisbane, it was brisbane
people that got to ask teh questions to the band. two of them were from
skinnys, and the rest were from other music stores around brisbane. I
think it was done just before the 'real' one in america was aired.

Well kiddies, as my good friend, the ever so demented Geek Girl, has
already announced, SOUNDGARDEN is going to be doing one of those infuriating
online interviews with Rockline on June 10!! Which means you people have to
dig out the good old AOL disks again!! Unless you can access the interview
over the 'net. But if you can't, then I guess I'll be seeing y'all here!!
 Ain't life just grand!!!

CH>a lot of people have heard DOTU now, so fess up, what's yer favorite new
CH>song? Mine is probably either Never The Machine Forever

I love this song. It's so...so...interesting. Kim must have the best
rhythm ever. And so must Chris, Matt, and Ben, for playing it with
him. Every time Matt goes, "Rat-tat-tat" or something like that, the
beat turns around. It's great. I played a song like that in high
school marching band, but the woodwinds fucked it up, because they have
no rhythm at all.

CH> Zero Chance is really good too...

Yes. I like this song, too. I also love Ty Cobb (I finally got my dad
outta the record player room to hear it), and the guitar solo in Ty
Cobb kicks ass, too. I just love the mandolin and mandola (is that
it?) in that song. It reminds me of the banjo in the Dukes of Hazzard
theme song (by the ever so great Waylon Jennings). Pretty Noose is
growing on me so much. And so is Dusty. That song is just filled with
soul. In fact, Chris puts a lot of soul into the vocals on this
record. But there doesn't seem to be as much emotion, but I'm sure
I'll eat those words soon, after I listen to it a lot more. I still
miss Chris' wails, which there don't seem to be a lot of. He sings
high a lot, but he doesn't punch those shots of vocals right in your
face like he used to (I'll probably eat that soon, too). Well, anyway,
I love the album. It still depends on what mood I'm in, if I have to
pic a favorite album or song, though.

I JUST SAW OZZY TUESDAY NIGHT IN CHARLOTTE.. FRONT ROW!!!!

Sepultura opened with a kick ass set. They were tight as hell... Type O
played second, they were weird.... OZZY WAS AWESOME!!!!

he does more than write great songs, he is a humorist and showman, this
show is a must see.. After the first song, some girl tossed a bra on
stage, he picked it up and said, "what are you laughing at, i collect
these fucking things." It was just an awesome show!

songs included:
paranoid
goodbye to romance
perry mason
bark at the moon
mr. crowley
i just want you
children of the grave
iron man
sabbath bloody sabbath
crazy train
no more tears
i don't want to change the world
mama, i'm coming home
war pigs
i don't know
suicide solution

well... either thats all, or i'm missing just a few songs.. but anyway,
it was just totally awesome :)

Subject: An Unkind and other DOTU ramblings

I just noticed how fucking awesome this song is... the chorus sent
shivers up my spine just now... much like what 4th of July does to me.
This is my favorite song at the moment... If you've heard Wellwater
Conspiracy thing you know its obviuos that Chris is trying to sing
like Ben in this one...

A few things I'd like to say:

1. IMHO Bootcamp is reminicent of "Full On (reprise)" in the way that
the guitar starts out playing bluesy stuff with the band and drums
kicking in at one point. It also has a definite Pink Floyd feel/sound
to it...

2. Tighter & Tighter reminds me of Blind Dogs, anyone else think this?

3. I also found that alot of the songs sound like they could be on a
Hater album (the Ben Shepherd tunes particularly)

4. This album is fucking awesome... after about 3 listens I totally
got into the groove of it... much like how Superunknown was the first
few times... There aren't any songs that dissapoint me. I am
definitely gonna get it on CD next Tuesday.
