The other day, while thinking about the Soundgarden songs that describe
me, I thought about Let Me Drown, and the meaning just hit me like
hell. I've been wondering about the song forever, and finally, after
two years, and almost another album, I realized. Now what did I
realize you might ask yourself. Well, I think it's about suicide.
Like he's holding a gun to his head, or standing on a building,
thinking about killing himself, but kinda talking to himself, like the
good side and the bad side. Not really a good and bad, but one side
hurt the other, and now the one side wants to die because he feels so
degraded, or something, by the other side, so the one side tells the
other how he feels. And he talks about how pathetic he is. He says,
"Stretch the bones over my skin, stretch the skin over my head, I'm
going to the holy land." Hey, I don't wanna live, so just let me close
my eyes and die, so I can go to a better place. Like he's frustrated
with everything around him. Well, anyway, I had it all figured out a
couple nights ago, but didn't have time to type it, and now I can't
remember the words I was thinking. I hate that. Maybe someone gets
what I'm saying (in my ever so pathetic way). I think someone already
said something about suicide and this song, but it finally dawned on my
hard-headed ass. Fuck you all ;) (now I have to hear Ty Cobb).

sommsters: no, i still haven't found somms, but i did happen to stumble
upon the PN 7" with Jerry Garcia's Finger on the b-side. (boy, that
sounds weird) anyway, glad to have found it, all by accident! i was
looking at the wall where they keep all the new vinyl singles and rare
crap, thinking to myself "you know, i shoulda bought that Flower colored
vinyl here when they had it last year" when all of the sudden my eyes
happen upon the PN single! so five bucks later, i own copy #2500 of 5000.
now that i am done gloating, a question: does anyone know who might have
a compilation of their vid's, esp with the unedited JCP? (and PN if
possible!) also, is that seattle radio program going to be any different
than the rockline show on monday night? standing by with blank tapes!

Let Me Drown's about dying, but according to Chris, it's about going
back to the womb to die. I think I typed up the article he says it in

Hmmm, I've been reading a few of these threads about what SG song
influences you etc..., and they all seem a tad morbid - personally I'm
still waiting for a SG song that sums up my 'not-so-morbid' life.

Maybe DOTU will solve this little problem for me.

Can someone please explain to me once and for all what the deal is with
the PN single. I found 3 different versions: one from the UK w/just a

the UK which is 2 of 2 and has the poster etc., also one from Germany
which doesn't mention there being 2 cd's and has a color pic of the band

Subject: Down on the Upside

Hey list!

Before the flames begin: IMHO, this album gets 9 out of 10 stars.

I've listened to the new album 9 times since Thursday. In different places
and states of conscienceness :-) The quick version of this post is...It's a
great album and it's not worthy of some of your blind idol praise. There
are great songs (Ty Cobb, No Attention, Tighter and Tighter, Dusty, Boot
Camp, Never the Machine Forever) there are blatant Zeppelin/Beatles
derivatives "Blow Up the Outside World", 60's psychedelic patches similar to
Jefferson Airplane (Applebite) and there are also rock by number (which some
of you will like) tunes such as (Rhinosaur, Never Named, An Unkind) and
great tunes ready to be mass marketed to the MTV youth (Burden in My Hand,
Zero Chance) There is no new ground being broke in this album. Yes they
are using Moog's, but they just sounding like every other band that uses
them. This is the warmest sounding SG album you'll probably ever hear
because of some of the new instruments. Especially "Overfloater" which is
also the most stoner friendly song SG has ever done. Someone in the band
must be doing hash. There is NO noise. No JCP, No BTW. Those of you that
thought that SG could never do an unplugged session will take that statement
back after hearing this album. This album could of been made in 1977 and it
would of fit right in. If you really want to know what the album sounds
like...play Zeppelin's _Houses of the Holy_, Pink Floyd's _Wish You Were
Here_ and Rod Stewart's _Every Picture Tells a Story_ at the same time. I
bet you can find all 3 of those album by Kim's turntable. He's definitely
been listening to them. It shows.

Friday night I brought the album to my fave tavern and had my own SG
listening party. The crowd consisted of mostly classic rock fans that have
heard some new music...but basically just listen to the repetitive AOR
fodder. The local radio station does play some new stuff...and everyone
knew "Pretty Noose" (they were pretty indifferent to it). The mostly 30
something crowd LOVED Zero Chance, Dusty, Blow up The Outside World ("sounds
a little like Stairway" :-) , Burden in My Hand ....and they really liked
Tighter and Tighter. (weird).

- ---------------------------------------------

The players:

Chris: great song writing as usual. A little too much filtering of his
voice like John Lennon.

Kim: Solid riffs.

Matt: Brilliant as usual

Ben: The unsung hero. The reason this album works. You can hear whatever
experimentation that goes on through Ben. The banjo on Ty Cobb is
brilliant...and it WORKS! He's nothing like John Paul Jones...but he
contributes so much to this band in small yet major ways that he reminds me
of him.

- ----------------------------------------------

My biggest gripe with the album:

The length of "Boot Camp". It's only 2:59. It could easily be 12:59! It's
great....and I really, really hope they play it live...it would serve as a
brilliant experimentation piece segueing into Slaves and Bulldozer's :-)

I LOVE "Boot Camp". Can anyone figure out what's being said in the left
speaker in the beginning? It sounds like a newscast...and I think I hear
the words "Michael Jackson". I cant figure it out. Anyone?

Oh if you're familar with Zeppelin's work....sing to yourself "Close the
door and turn out the lights, you know they wont be home tonight" at the
very beginning of "Boot Camp" :-) :-)

- ------------------------------------------------

Coolest moment: (tie)

the intro to "Ty Cobb" and the banjo playing in it... and the way Chris
voice (scream) dissolves into white noise in "Boot Camp".

He probably doesn't think we're idiots, but he probably thinks some of
us should take this stuff less seriously. I remember reading
somewhere (I've been looking for this article but can't find it just
now) that Chris feels funny about people who come up saying "I know
just what you meant by that song" or "I feel the same way" because
usually they don't have a clue. Really, how could you, unless you were
in his head when he wrote it. Anyway, that's why I think we just need
to accept each others interpretations as opinions and not fact (unless
of course someone has a quote or something from the songwriter). And
even then I'm sure Chris wouldn't mind that his songs touch us in
different ways.

Hey All-
Being an avid Rolling Stone reader, and sometimes hating
myself for it, a couple of 3 star albums come to mind
when they first reviewed an album..mainly
Nirnava-Nevermind
Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation

Both of these albums were initially perceived as 'good'
and later, suddenly they were being lauded as masterpieces
of their genre. While its way too early to classify 'Down'
as a classic, I will wait and give my impression then :)

since seth bagged it so completely last week (matt will never forgive
you), I listened to rhinosaur twice last night, and I really don't think
that it is that much of a hairfarmer sort of song. the riff is *really*
cool imho. ben's bass tone sounds great, adn matt does this weird snare

I put the headphones on for this one also :) this song absolutely
kicks my butt, and will proceed to kick the whole list's collective butt!
it's not quite the same as limo wreck, more of a blues progression, but
it certainly is as intense.

he won't be unsung for very long, at least not here :) his song
writing has reached such a level that I think he is almost as good as
chris. the tunes he has crafted for songs like zero chance (talk about
atmosphere) and never named are sure to become soundgarden classics, long

release on sunday midnight. they should be selling it for $25 as are hmv,
and will probably be giving away a guitar and the whole soundgarden
catalogue.

You know, I think Chris just throws out some stuff, and lets us decide.
I've heard so much stuff from him in various articles and interviews
about what songs mean, and sometimes they contradict each other. Maybe
the meaning of a song depends on what mood he's in, or maybe he's just
so sick of people asking him what songs are about. I dunno.

I have a record player (and an eight track player...when's the release
date for the eight track? ;) and I'm getting the record on Tuesday and
I have no money, so I'll just have to pay the guy with a bullet to the
head.

I have been wondering for a really long time what Chris is saying at the end
of "Spoonman". It's not listed on the insert, and I was just wondering if
anyone knows...

I think it depends what mood he is in also. I have many meanings to many
songs.

Subject: Pretty Noose tab...

Hey fellas...! I made some minor corrections to my tab
for pretty noose. The tunning is (low to high): CGDGBE
not DGDGBE OOOOOPs!!!
This tunning is better because now you can treat the chords
as a "dropped D" AND the dropped C gives the first tone needed
for the intro.

Anyways...that's all. I'll be waiting until the
21st 'cause I don't have a turntable and I think I am the only
guy in the whole Florida State that actually LOVES SG...bummer.
But it's good to stand out and be sole fan...I wouldn't mind a
private concert personally... =-) Peace! C-YA!

-Damn! I wish I had as many witty remarks as the NM.. =-)
