I know the album is coming out in a few days, and that most of you have
already heard or even have the album. But those of you who haven't and want
to get an idea of what Applebite and An Unkind sound like, I've posted some
wavs on my homepage. The addy is:
http://www.fix.net/~srogers/sndgrdn.html
I haven't tested it to see if it works so if you can't seem to download them
from there email me and I'll try to fix it. oh yeah BTW, they are kinda bad
samples since they were recorded in 8 bit mono. Anyways...have fun u guys.

From: never.named@thenexus.com
Subject: Ok.. I'm gonna try this..

I hope this works out ok.. Here's my song by song review of Down On The
Upside...

Pretty Noose: We've already heard this song, most of us anyway :) Very
good, kinda reminiscent of Alice in Chains and Nirvana. Little.
Yellow. Different.

Rhinosaur: I like this song (duh). It RAWKS. I do like the solo, but
I guess I could see why Seth doesn't :) It's got a cool riff...

Zero Chance: This song didn't really affect me at first, but now I love
it. It's slow.. someone said it is reminiscent of Fell On Black Days I
think but it doesn't really remind me of that.. it's in the same vein
though.. of slow, depressing music.. it's got some clean guitar in it..
it's not heavy.. it's cool though.. It's like TOTD, I'll go with that.

Dusty: This kinda reminds me of Head Down, a little weeenie tiny bit.
He says "I'm down on the upside" quite a bit on this song...

Ty Cobb: I first heard this song (sort of) on the Reading bootleg, but
I didn't really like it then. I heard it on the tape on the way home
last night and all of a sudden my gas pedal hit the floor :) If you're
going to drive to this song, do it on a clear highway :) It's really..
hyper is the way I'd describe it.. I was screaming "I'M HARDHEADED FUCK
YOU ALL!" in the car.. wonder what everone outside thought :) Great
GREAT song.

Blow Up The Outside World: Well, we all know that this song is
amazing.. cause everyone else is raving about it :) It is a great
song.. At the end he sings "Blow up the outside" a lot.. I like it. I
think I like the beginning better though..

Burden In My Hand: This'll get overplayed, Steve was right.. I do like
it.. What you hear when you call that fone number is I think the chorus,
because it's repeated a few times.. but I'm not sure cause Soundgarden
is really.... weird :)

Never Named: This song is hyper too, I think. It's short and fast.
But it's great. Didn't Ben write this? I don't have the record
nearby.. Bleh.

Applebite: I love this song. You can't hear the vocals all that well,
but it has this really cool guitar (I dunno if you acn call it a riff
cause he's playing a couple of notes, no chords or anything) part in it.
It's awesome.. :)

Never The Machine Forever: Oh my God, I can't understand why anyone
else is raving about this song! Beatlesque my ass! That review of DOTU
in Guitar I typed up.. the reviewer must have been on drugs. This song
is AWESOME.. It's heavy.. I think it's my favorite Soundgarden song..
and everone knows how I feel about Jesus Christ Pose :) OH MY GOD!

Tighter & Tighter: Another cool, heavy song. It's got a riff with
harmonics in it, a la Heretic and Limo Wreck. I like it. I like it a
lot, dammit.

No Attention: Well, it's basically the same thing as the Self Pollution
version, except different lyrics, and longer. I like the DOTU one
better cause it's longer :) It's fast and riffy. It's a good song.

Switch Opens: This is really cool. It's kinda mellow.. Reminds me of
something from the sixties :) But it's awesome... Hey, what's wrong
with the sixties?

Overfloater: You think I'd be partial to this song cause it's my handle
:) But while I like it, it's not my favorite on the album. It's a good
song.. mellow.. I like in the chorus, he says "I'm overfloating" and
then his voice is distorted and he sings "alone, alone, alone, alone"
really fast. The chorus is heavy. It's got a bit of harmonics in it.
And it's got organ (Rhodes piano I guess). Nice... :)

An Unkind: I really like this song as well. It's fast. It left an
impression on me.. (shows bootprint on the buttock area) I can't really
describe it that well cause I don't remember exactly what it sounds
like, but I remember that it's fast and I really really like it.

Boot Camp: Whoever said that this starts out like an epic, like Like
Suicide, and then just dies out was right.. The way he's singing it
reminds me of the Police (SORRY! That's what it makes me think of! And
that wasn't an insult cause hey, I *LIKE* the Police! And so did Chris
at one point!)

Ok.. Well, all in all, if youre disappointed by this album, go to the
nearest fone, dial 911. Explain to them that you need THE MEN IN THE
WHITE COATS to take you to the SANNY-TARIUM because You are Sick In The
Head because You Don't Like The New Soundgarden Album. I love it.

My favorites are An Unkind, Switch Opens, Tighter & Tighter, Zero
Chance, Applebite and Never The Machine Forever. I wonder how all this
is gonna come across live :) Sorry I couldn't do a better review of
this, but I think to do a good review, I'd need the CD :) So I can
listen to a bit of a song, write about it, and then move on to the next
song.. You're saying "Why don't you do that with your record Erin you
Silly Bitch?" Cause I don't have a record player, Silly :) I had to
tape it :)

YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS RECORD! IF NOT, YOURE FUKKING INSANE AS FAR
AS I AM CONCERNED! You'd better buy TWO copies of DOTU.. along with a
new record/tape/CD player.. :)

OK, here is the info on the UK single. There are two singles available:
1)1. Pretty Noose
2.Applebite
3.An unkind
4.An interview with the band
It comes in a box (the cover of which should be on Stephen Russell's =0Aweb=
page since I sent a scan of it to him yesterday), which also contains =0Aa=
poster and a postcard (they have the same design, which, again I sent =0At=
o Stephen Russell for his web page).

2)1. Pretty Noose
2.Jerry Garcia's Finger (Very strange track!!!)

Seth has the design for this single on his page.
Both cd's say "part 2 of a 2 cd set" on them. I don't know why.

Incidentally, they only cost me =A31.99 each ( think that that's about US =
=0A$3). Hahahahahaha!!!

BTW, don't want to sound like I'm gloating, but DOTU is scheduled to be =0A=
released on the 20th in the UK, so I should get it a day (or at least a few=
 =0Ahours) earlier. Yippeeeeee!!!! :-) =
        =20

Sommites,
I finally saw the Pretty noose video, it was really weird. But I must say
all of the descriptions I heard on the list were pretty accurrate,
pertaining to the song and the video. As for the guy that said that
Superunk was written to get sg more fans and to sell records. Lets be
serious now, 2 million people bought bmf and that stage now one was really
concerned that they were becoming commercial. 3 million bought superunk
now you cannot believe they acquired more true fans because of that album.
I have had MTV for the last 5 years, and I had heard of sg before but I
really never got into before bhs sun came out. Now I have gone and bought
the rest of the albums, without bhs superunk would have probably sold the
same as bmf albeit it quietly. Now if 10% of the extra million who bought
superunk became true fans would you begrudge them of that? Besides have
you listned to superunk lately? They completely reeinvented themsleves,
bmf was there first succesful album, why would you reinvent yourself to be
more successfull, if you have something that already works? Besides have
you listned to superunk lately? Who the hell ever heard of the a pop album
where hardly any of the songs are in 4/4. I'm sure the record execs at A&M
loved that, hell bhs is in 7/4 and it isn't that repitive it's got two
minute and a half verses. Considering that the average pop song is only
about 3 1/2 minutes long, I don't think they had casey's top 40 in mind
when the wrote that song. Hell would you put limo wreck (15/8) on a pop
album? I am really tired of people complaining that a band is selling out
because they change they're style. They weren't immitating anyone else, so
leave them alone. What the hell do you want bmf part 2- 8 for the next
album? That would be selling out they already now thats successful. As for
the new song, it isn't catchy or repititive, they don't show the band,
it's less riff orientated, that sounds like pop to me. If you want to talk
about pop tunes listen to the potusoa. Like little joe said just be glad a
band you like new album is half as good as superunk let alone just as
    good.

I agree, Clown. To me Mailman always makes me think of someone who's
been shunned by a woman who thinks, or who he thinks thinks, she is
better than him.("Hello don't you know me I'm the dirt beneath your
feet, the most important fool you forgot to see") Now he's going to do
something that she'll notice, but may get him in trouble.("I know I'm
headed for the bottom") Maybe he's a stalker ("For all of the times
when you made me disappear, this time I'm sure you will know that I'm
here") And this verse: My place was beneath you
                       but now I'm above
And now I send you a message of love
                       A simple reminder of what
                       you won't see
A future so holy without me.
makes me think of John Hinkley and his love notes to Jody Foster and
his attempt to kill Reagan to get her attention.
I don't care how Chris has opened the song in concert, I just don't
see the psycho mailman connection. "For all of your kisses turned
                                     to spit in my face
                                     For all that reminds me
                                     which is my place"
just sounds more like someone going nuts over someone who doesn't
return his affection. I guess its just that this song has a real sexy
sound and feel to me that would be ruined if I thought it was about a
mad postal worker. Just my 2cents.

hi, sorry if i offend any of you SOMMSters or if i dont live up to your

get a measly-ass allowance and dont have that much money to buy CDs. I have
$30 saved up and $14 of those are already put away in the corner of my
wallet just waiting for the 24th of may. I currently have Superunknown, BMF,
and LTL. I havent heard many other soundgarden songs besides the ones on
those cds except for 'show me' on no alternative. I was wondering which SG
CD i should buy first, UM OK or SM/FOPP. i went to the shitty local record
store and those are the only two they have other than the ones i have. I've
heard entering and a snippet of nothing to say from encarta 95. i liked both
of those a lot especially entering. but i always hear ppl talking about
flower, nazi driver, and other songs of UM OK and i seldom hear talk about
screaming life/fopp so i was wondering which one you guys would reccomend i
get first, theyre both the same price btw. thanks a lot.

All,
Just quick a few quick comments, do you guys think that lately the members
of soundgarden have been influenced by each other musically? PN sounds
like a Ben Shepherd song but Chris wrote it, but hey Head Down and
Somewhere are two of Chris's favorite songs. But they way that PN sounds
kinda unsymetrical despite the fact that it's in 4/4 sounds like a
definite Ben influence. Anyway thats all

Okay, I watched it to see the Vedder thing, and in my opinion, Chris is
imitating Vedder when he's singing "No one sings like you anymore". Is that
the same part everyone else was thinking of?

Mailman is such an amazing song. Matt is a terrific songwriter. Seems like
the song could be about that postal worker. It's like about someone at the
bottom of the social structure who's feeling sorry for themselves and wants
to make everyone else regret it, in my opinion.
