G'day Sommsters!!!

What is going on ?

Having heard lots of things about the new video, I stayed up last night to
watch 'Headbangers Ball' on MTV Europe, and sure enough, at about 00:30 they
played the video for Pretty Noose :)

But......

IT WASN'T THE RIGHT VIDEO !!!!!

The video *I* saw last night consisted of the band, standing in a room
playing the song, with a few flashing/moving coloured lights. That's it! It
looked like it'd been done in one take, with a camcorder!!! I couldn't
believe it!!! They were all just standing there playing!!!!!

WHAT IS GOING ON ? Could it be that MTV Europe have a different video ???

Please, someone tell me that they've seen it too !!!

Cheers,
Warren......

Subject: video

Readers,
It's as if I have been touched by the Soundgarden fairy. The
first time the "Pretty Noose" video was aired on MTV, I was at my
girlfriends, about to go home when I thought, "I might as well see which
Coolio video their playing." You see I had already given up hope that I
would ever see the new video. As soon as I turned it on one of the VJ's
was saying, "and now here is the MTV premier of Soundgarden's new video
entitled "Pretty Noose." I literally jumped for joy. The video is
incredible. What are readers interpretations. I think it's a dream that
Cornell is having- he's sitting at the edge of his bed near the end, like
he just woke up.
Anyway, like I said, I have been touched by the Soundgarden
fairy. After staying at my girlfriends house for about an hour to let
the video and song settle in my mind, I went home. I made lunch, read
the paper, and turned on MTV, thinking, "Please don't be Coolio." Well,
it wasn't. It was "Pretty Noose" again. Withing two hours I had seen
the new SG video twice! I couldn't believe my luck. I again jumped for
joy. What are the odds? For the first time ever I praised MTV for
playin the same video's over and over.
	But wait, it gets better.
After that day I didn't get to watch much tv. It is finals week,
and I have been studying-like you didn't know that. Anyway, last night I
finally got done studying for my American Literature exam, which was at
8am the next morning, so I jumped into bed. Then all of the sudden, I
got the urge to turn on MTV. What are the chances of it being on again,
I asked myself? And guess what? It wasn't on. But, the VJ said coming
up in the next hour, Blah, Blah, and the new SG video! So I stayed up
the next hour.
	Loving life,
Mike "What are your intentions?" Sharkey

From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

As some of you have pointed out, the version of the video that is
showing in Europe is not the same as the one on MTV here in the US.

Frank Kozik's explanation: "Yes, I forgot to tell you. The European
'powers that be' decided they could not use my video because it was
too confusing and they felt people would not be able to tell it was
Soundgarden. What they are using is an excerpt from a promotional
30-minute EPK done during pre-release of the new album."

Hope this clears up any confusion.

I went to the local really cool music store tonight to beg them to sell
me DOTU early, with no real hope of actually getting anywhere. I just
got in the door when some guy says to me "Hey, we have the new
Soundgarden record for you. We're holding it, but we can't sell it til
Tuesday." And I was saying, "You're SURE you can't sell it to me til
Tuesday??" And he was like "Well, I can show it to you" and he goes
behind the counter and pulls out one brand-spankin new beautiful copy
of Down On The Upside. He let me touch it and hold it, and it was the
biggest tease. It was being in the same hotel room with Mr. Champagne
(long story.. Actually it's not so long, I'm oging to Virginia next
weekend with my school's marchingband, and I have a crush on my band
teacher, Mr. Champagne.. Dammit!). And I said, "Are you SURE you can't
sell it to me?" And according to my friend Johny my face lit up like
the 4th of July (hehe) and he says "Well, I can try." And he called his
brother, who owns the store.. waiting was madness.. Finally he comes
back with the copy of DOTU in his hand and he was saying, "You gotta
keep this a secret." To make a long story short, I GOT DOWN ON THE
UPSIDE! I raced with it to Johny's house to tape it cause I don't have
a turntable. I am the luckiest fucking person in the world.

I'm with ya, sister. 2 great tastes that probably taste great together. I
may have to give up boyfriend, home, and job for those two ;)

I agree completely with blind dog's summation of the melodic music/icky pop
music confusion that many people have. It's irritating, especially since I
write music and it tends to be melodic, and in the back of my mind I know
there will be many audiences who will interpret this as in some
way...wussy. The great TRIUMPH of SG and a few other bands is their ability
to write beautiful ear pleasing melodies that also kick you in the gut,
satisfying that craving for loud guitar, bass, drums and screeching
vocals.....I can only dream of writing such songs.

Now there are two bands that I never thought Soundgarden would be

that I don't like REM, but I can't stand Aerosmith. But I guess if
Soundgarden played Aerosmith songs, I'd still love it.

I think that's so funny. I mean, after Kurt Cobain killed himself,
people who hated him before all of a sudden started mourning. It's
like people need something to keep them down. But if Chris Cornell
killed himself, I doubt anyone would notice, except us, the dedicated
SOMMsters. And no one would kill themselves over it like they did with
Kurt, excpt maybe me and Shroom (who's left to idolize that's as
beautiful as Chris and wears a fork?).

Did they hit that on the head or what? This just proves that they've
been reading our posts.

Sommsters-

All of you in the Seattle area should know that KISW 99.9 will premiere DOTU
on Monday at 7 pm. The special broadcast will also include an interview with
all four members of SG, and a retrospective featuring B sides, rare tracks
from the stations archives and comments from the band. Scott Vanderpool will
be the host. The broadcast was taped last Tuesday, I believe.

Have a good one,

After all there is only so much ground-breaking and innovation you can do
without fucking up the great sound you have already achieved. DOTU may
not be as vastly different as SuperUnk was to BMF, but it by no means
'just rocking out', it's very diverse and it's damn good. How are songs
like Ty Cobb or Zero Chance considered to be Soundgarden doing the same
old thing!!
You have to go a long way to find a band that can write an album like
SuperUnk. Why do some people seem to expect that the next album should be
some amazing departure from this. The boys have found a great sound, who
can begrudge them the chance to recreate it again in *some* of their new
material.

All I can say is this: If you hear any new song better than 'Blow up the
Outside World' this year, buy the band that wrote it. Till then thank
your lucky stars that you have an album, in DOTU, that sounds similar to
and as good as SuperUnknown.
