Well, I know there must be some of you who don't have MTV (like me,
for example) and are still curious about the new "Pretty Noose" video,
and I know that almost everyone must be interested in getting an
inside perspective on the whole thing, so here is director Frank
Kozik's take on the whole affair.

As you'll read, he wants feedback on the video after you see it, so
you can either email him directly (yes, I have permission to make his
email address public) or email me and I'll forward your comments to
him.

Just a bit of background for those who might not know: Kozik is
primarily a poster artist, responsible for some of the most striking
print graphics available (there is a scan of one on the unofficial SG
page). In 1994, he formed a record label with Kevin Plamondon called
Man's Ruin. "Pretty Noose" is his first attempt at directing a music
video.

And now, from Kozik himself...

Hello Seth,
   Allright-here's some general info-
The video was shot on location in Seattle over the course of 3 days. Most of
it was at the OK Hotel, which is a triple-threat Bar/Restaurant/Venue down
by the ferries.Back in the day it was a Transient hotel, and the top floors
are an abandoned wonderland of rotting hallways and tiny rooms. We also shot
at some other places,Seattle Tattoo,Westernco Donuts,a couple of street
scenes.Doing the shoot was a lot of fun, actually, and the band wasn't
involved until day three, due to their crushing schedule.I had been
apprehensive about their attitude, which turned out to be excellent, and made
it an easy shoot.
The video presented a definate challenge,as they wanted something
"non-videoish",with no band performance or acting of any sort. After
listening to the song about a million times,I basically portrayed the
"pretty noose",as your average bad girlfriend experience.Chris says that
the pretty noose is a thing in life that seems attractive and desirable at
first, then becomes a nightmare, and the song is about getting away from
that.I also wanted to make a video, that while containing the un-escapeable
TV imagery associated with rock music)Sleaze and sex),would be perhaps a
little "smoother" and natural than the flashy/corny/artsy stuff I saw on
the 1 day of MTV I watched.
Therefore, the video is a series of vignettes featuring each band member
in a hopefully natural-feeling setting, without forcing them to do anything
overly-poseurish.Matt rides a motorcycle,Kim shoots pool,Ben smokes a
cigarette,Chris looks depressed/deep....interspersed withg the band
appearences we also see some other sleazy"slice-o life" scenarios-a donut
shop,a tattoo parlor,a pull-over police thing,a shady
transaction.Meanwhile, the "devil-girl" sort of (hopefully) ties it all
together, until she is (in the uncensored version) killed by Chris, ending
his cycle of depression.
Looking at the finished video,a lot of people are not going to like it
because it's edited "weird"-all dissolves, timed to vocals and guitars
instead of drums, limited band appearance.People either love it or think it
sucks. You all will have to decide for yourselves.I obsessed with making it
look nice, and I think it does that allright.Whether or not it "works" as a
music video or mirrors fans fantasies about Soundgarden,I don't know.I
would love to have some feedback from "the world",so I can figure out if
directing videos is something I should be doing. This was my first one,and
it's a whole lot different and complicated than doing print graphics.I'd
hate to waste the energy on it if what comes out sucks.

Technically,it was a pretty plush situation. We shot in a wide variety of
formats, mostly 35mm,and went the whole hog in post-production,which was
done in Chicago.I sat there with the editor 18 hours a day carving this
thing out,so it's all my fault.

Over-all it was an amazing experience.

I just got hold of the UK limited edition!! pretty noose single. It
is sooooooooo!!!! great!! It's in a box along with a poster and a
postcard of the new album cover (I think) - it's sort of split in two,
the bottom half is the reflection. It's got the four band members in
a really dark light. I may scan the postcard if it's not already
available. Let me know.

Onto the songs:
Pretty noose is my favourite on the single. Even though the bastards
at Kerrang only gave it three K's (is that subliminal advertising?)
Applebite is pretty cool, I love the way the vocals have been done on
it. An unkind is good too, I like the punk-type feel to it.

BTW, in the interview Chris (at least I think it's Chris - I've never
actually heard the band speak, only sing) mentions something about a
pinky thing. Is he referring to having to stretch his pinky to play
some of the songs? If he is, then I know exactly what he means. I
still have difficulty stretching my pinky up to the 8th fret in the
intro to Black Hole Sun.
                                            Grant Asher

P.S. I've read a few farewell notes from those of you who are off on
holiday from uni, how many people are going to be leaving soon due to
the vacation? When is your vacation in the USA?

P.P.S. The people at Radio 1 here in the UK must die!! On the top 40
show yesterday they previewed this weeks new single releases, Smashing
Pumpkins etc, but did they play Pretty Noose? No, they fucking well
didn't!!!! They must Die!!!!

Did anyone else catch "Pretty Noose" on MTV last night? I was watching a
movie and flipped over to see what I could see and caught the last minute or
so which featured one shot of the band, (that looked like it was from the
photo shoot they used for the album) a close-up of Chris sitting on a bed in
a messy room, and a serpentine devil-woman. If anyone else saw the rest, I
think we'd all appreciate a better depiction of the feel and events in their

Subject: Blues for the Red Sun

a while ago someone talked about bands that sound like soundgarden. ive
always related kyuss to them because of that black sabbath influenced sound
i like so much. i was listening to kyuss' second album (blues for the red
sun) yesterday. thats one of my favourite albums next to louder than love
and badmotorfinger. the first song ("thumb") has some parts that remind me
of the fast part of "gun". then the slow beginning of "molten universe"
reminds me of "slaves and bulldozers". and track 4 of the album is called
"50 million year trip (downside up)" <----- there it is. downside up <-->
down on the upside.

anyway i love this guitar sound im talking about (black sabbath), it
definitely reaches its peak in soundgarden's cover of "into the void". ive
found a little bit of it in mind funk's album "dropped" too (with jason
everman).

and while im on the subject i love bands that create this sound atmosphere
around their songs. it makes the song not only a listening experience but it
also places you in another world. soundgarden does this in most of their
songs, especially on ugly truth, slaves and bulldozers, searching with my
good eye closed. (they dont do it very succesfully in ultramega ok or
screaming life/fopp - or maybe a little in beyond the wheel - but i still
like those albums). half and head down also carry that atmosphere but its
different from the others, it places you in a different world. kyuss does
this throughout the whole "blues for the red sun" more succesfully than on
their other albums. their atmosphere of sound is based on this flow of
guitars, those of you who have listened to this album will know what im
talking about. other bands that do this atmosphere thing are sonic youth
(with distortion and noise) and monster magnet (with space like sounds
sampled in the songs). ok enough with this stuff.

now let me clear something up:

>>Enrique Olavarria lo siento pero no puedo
>>transcribir toda la entrevista con Chris Cornell
>>dura mas de 45 minutos y no tengo tiempo para
>>poder transcribirla.

>Enrique Olavarria isn't able to transcribe all of the interview with Chris
>Cornell that lasted more than 45 minutes, and I don't have time to
>transcribe it.

here's the correct translation:
Enrique Olavarria: im sorry but i can't transcribe the interview with CC
because it lasted more than 45 minutes and i dont have time to do it.

i am enrique. i asked him to transcribe the interview and he was telling me
he couldnt. other than that your translation was very good, vasant.

Well, I when I first heard Circle of Power, I thought it was Chris singing.
I hated it almost instantly, thinking, "How can someone so talented do that
on purpose?" Later, when I learned Hiro was responsible, I started to look
at it differently. You're right, he sings so poorly, it is enjoyable to

Hey All-
Just caught Pretty Noose vid on MTV. It was about 8am, so I was just
shaking off a hangover and getting my cappachino injection flowing.
The video is trippy as hell. Use of dark green, blurred, faded dark blue
colors that seem to drip off the television.

I caught half of the video, just to the part where the woman in the red
dress starts dancing. Sort of makes the 'Black Hole Sun' video seem
like 'Shiney Happy People'-not to dog on that video at all.

The video will probably be like the album. There's a lot of imagery that
I just didn't look closely at. Watch it 4 or 5 times, and you'll see something
new every time. Dark, loud and distrubing--it grows on you, what more could
you ask for?

Subject: CC ON DRUGS

Thanks to everyone who posted reprints of articles regarding CC's opinion of
drugs...I wish I had more time to post specific interviews myself. I have 43
various magazine interviews with CC, and he definitely took an
anti-drug/anti-partying stand to the point of almost sounding anti-social,
(he even admitted he was agoraphobic at one point in his life). CC has said a
thousand times that he doesn't party, has few friends, and prefers to stay
home when he's not working. It makes me crazy when I read here that CC and SG
"must" be doing drugs and partying just because they're in a band. It seems
like 90% of the people on this list don't read anything except the info other
people put into the digest...why all the speculation when you can get the
facts straight from the CC interviews? Rolling Stone, Spin, and RIP all had
several in-depth interviews with CC, and you can very easily order back
copies if you're interested. When I was in the hospital for several months,
my aunt spent hundreds of $$$ on SG memorabilia, back-copies of magazines,
promo photos and singles from Susan Silver, CD's, and numerous video
compilations from PJ Starr, just to keep my spirits up, so I have quite a
collection of SG info now. I'm not an expert by any means, but it really
bothers me when people make negative comments and speculations about CC and
SG...especially when the correct information is out there and available to
everyone. Now that I'm out of the hospital and alive and kicking, my aunt got
me tickets to the SNL show with SG...and I hope I'll get a chance to see some
of you there!

From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

I saw the "PN" video, so here is a quick review - don't have time to go into
detail..

In very simple words.... It was damn fine... Personally I love the videos
with a band doing their thing (i.e., Fell On Black Days) without the strange
unknown characters and other distractions, but this video captures the sound,
the taste, the heart of "PN".

The scene where Ben is pulled over by the police and put through the hands on
the hood search is great - Ben is just right for this type of action. Kim in
the pool hall is another very strong image. Kim always comes across to me as
being real core rock, so him playing pool with a group of older black men gives
you the touch of old blues players, the roots of rock.. I found the colors
and angles of the videos are compelling, they add a dark but realistic touch to
the video. They never take, only give you more feelings.

The end of the video, the camera pans in on Chris, siting at the foot of an
unmade bed - this man is truly a delicious morsel.. No female will be able to
watch this scene with out the pit of her stomach doing that "God I'm going to
die if he doesn't touch me" thing.. He looks into the camera and your soul and
a women will see the good friend who needs a hug, the lose little boy who
needs a hug, the man of your dreams, who needs your love... And men will see
themselves and say "Yeah, I know how you feel, been there".

Everyone is going find something different about the meaning of the song
from this video.. I can see many weeks of good discussion on each of our
points of views.... Mr. Kozik, job well done - you have one thumb up from me..

of times within the next few weeks so noone will miss it. After I
frantically threw in a video tape I actually got to watch it. The band
doesn't feature too prominently in it although Matt makes a dashing
appearance on his motorcycle and is that Ben being thrown up on a car
and arrested? Later on he's hanging out on a VW bug it looks like. The
ending reminds me of the movie "Sid and Nancy" where Chris is sitting
on the end of a bed in a trashed out room looking depressed and
menacing, just like when the cops came to get Sid after murdering
Nancy.

on the TV that meant MTV was showing a new video, and sure enough the
wonderful sounds of Pretty Noose filled my Soundgarden-loving head.
Anyway, enough happy horseshit. Here's what's in the video.. They show
Soundgarden in a hotel, and they keep showing this chick's eye.. and
they show a bunch of chicks! I never thought I'd see all those chicks
in a Soundgarden video! There's this one chick dancing on a stage, and
Soundgarden is watching, and looking bored out of their asses. And Matt
is riding a motorcycle, and some chick gets a tattoo. Some guy (I think
it could be Ben) gets busted. he's thrown up against this car, and they
put the cuffs on him.. and at the end, they show Chris sitting on a bed
in a bedroom somewhere.. He looks like he just woke up :) and at the
VERY end of the video they show that eye again, and a Badmotorfinger
wheel comes out of it.. I thought that was fukking cool as hell. I
can't wait to tape it.. (ARG! I couldn't tape it this time!)

Hey Seth,
The "killing" is inferred...you see the girl sprawled out under the sheets
on a bed, while the camera moves up and into Chris's face, which has a
weird, sad look, then a dissolve of a rope sliding across her face drifts in
while a close-up of him staring at you emerges.

A rope sliding across a sleeping woman's face. That's the
footage MTV amputated? An inferred killing. A SYMBOLIC
killing, perhaps? Come on! Geez. The venomous lover wears
silk red devil ears throughout the video. How could most
viewers miss the point? If such a scene could inspire
violence, the perp would have been way way way beyond
fucking help long before the PN clip. Why is MTV so drawn
to mutilation? What, they couldn't tolerate a coherent
story line? Oh, no no, can't have a video that anyone can
actually comprehend. No. Gasp. Let's stick to guys in
freak makeup riding large pigs. Yeah, cool. Why couldn't
we see this scene? It sounds touching, actually. Fuck.

Hey listers!

Wouldnt you know it...I get rid of distractions such as the television and
radio so I can study for finals and what happens...SG premieres a new vid!
Ugh! Since MTV really doesnt show videos anymore...The video should be
found in 'crush' :-) rotation on the times that they *do* show vids, so
I/you shouldnt have a problem seeing it!

Frank Kozik is a _brilliant! artist!_ A perfect fit for directing a SG
video. I sincerely hope that some of you (Vikki?) take the time and give
him a fair and unbiased description of his style. I'm very excited to see
what he's done. I'm more excited in seeing the uncut vid :-) A&M has a
'mail-us' form on their web page (http://www.amrecords.com)...go get em! :-)

I'm up to 4 different versions of Black Hole Sun I've seen now. Well, I've
only seen 3 versions but the 4th one did exist. And I'm not entirely
sure...but maybe 2 are the same...anyway...there was the hurry up and
release the video even though it's not finished being edited version. There
was the MTV edit. I have an A&M promo video (Video Chaos #9) that contains
the uncut version. And the version on the CD-ROM seems just a little
different than the original. I may be mistaken...

according to radio in the toronto area; Lollapalooza tickets information
will be released to the general public this THURSDAY with venues and dates
and prices etc. I'm assuming tickets will go on sale this Saturday (or
next) at 10am....so save your cash! Def Lepperd wants $37.50 for general
admission tickets! Imagine what we're gonna get socked with! Pay attention
to the official lolla page and the ticketmaster page.

for the detailed SG fans, there are 2 different versions of Kyle Petty. The
original b-side version and on the _Home Alive_ compilation that version was
mixed by Brenden OBrien. There are differences. Enough that I'm going to
make a comment in the discography. I've also picked up the information that
Kyle Petty was rerecorded for inclusion on the new album (old
news..yeah)..but....for the SG trivia collection, the main difference was
the motor sounds in the new (unreleased) version was a Chevy instead of
Ben's 1970 Dodge pickup! :-) Listen close! Fool a redneck! :-)

School still sucks!

Ahhh, it's been a wonderful day to be a Soundgarden freak... First the new
video - stood there eyeballs glued to the screen.. Then the US mail hands me a
box from Chicago land - my poster and insert from S.I.S. Toni.. Thanks Toni
the postal service only crushed the box beyond belief, but the poster is fine..

Also in the mail is this months issue of Request.. There on the front
"Straight No Chaser - Soundgarden" New picture love it. But inside - four of
the greatest full face pictures of each of the band members. Each done in a
bronze tone close up.. They are so beautiful you can't believe it.. These are
the type of pictures I love to recreate in charcoal or pencil. The pictures
show so much detail, the fine lines worn into the skin, the small imperfection
that make a person special. Kim's and Chris's eyes look right into your heart.
Ben and Matt have this look of being deep in the world of time and space. I'm
totally taken with them..

I haven't read the article yet, but Seth if you don't have access to this

that it would make it's first appearance at 6:00 (like most videos that they
premiere do), and then it wasn't on!!! What's even worse is---it was Hootie
instead!!! Argh! Oh, so then I got home at 3:10, and my little brother (who
stayed home from school) was like making fun of me 'cos I missed it by one
video!!! Also, last night, I was planning on watching that Pearl Jam
unplugged thing at 9:15, and instead they did the Jams Countdown. So, I um,
watched VH1's "History of Hootie". I feel pathetic. I just know something's
going to distract me at 6:30, and I'll miss Matt and his motorcycle again.

this song still reminds me of a led zeppelin feel, but maybe that
is just the guitar tone or something. I agree that kim's solo is cool. I
just read the lyrics on the better sg site, and they are kind of weird, in
that the main character is some sort of huge beast out on the plains,
which is definitely not content that chris has ever covered before.

I think that zero chance is more like black hole sun (melodic)
than like suicide, although I agree on the fobd comparison. there are a
lot of beautiful little parts to the song. it is different, and I am a
little surprised at ben's skill in writing the music for it. it just
shows his versatility as a songwriter, because it is a long way from half
or dusty. what do you think seth?

which is to me the reason that they are going to probably make it
the second single. good call. it makes me think of temple of the dog,
something they would record if they were to do another album <knowing
there is no chance in hell>.

I really love this song. it grows on me every time I hear it. the
guitar part is so rhythmic that matt only has to play half his kit for
most of the song :) one of my new favourites.

it would surprise me if the band have already decided on what
single they want to release next, before the album is even out. from
interviews with them, it seemed to me like they leave it until the
previous single has run its course in the stores and the charts, so as to
get a better feel for what they should release next. btw, they won't have
any trouble finding different sounding songs to release off this record.
every last song is unique :)

I'm not so sure that this album is more layered than either bmf
or superunk. there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of guitar tracks
making that big wall of sound like on new damage or limo wreck. I
actually thought that the self-production and demo ethic behind the album
would have meant going away from layering 12 guitar parts for each song,
but then again I don't play guitar. maybe the 'fun' feeling just meant
that the layering wasn't as exact as on their previous albums.

as for never the machine forever being beatlesque, I think they
may have got the track order wrong or something. ntmf is one of the most
metalic and abrasive songs they have recorded. the riffs just roll around
and around, without any real hook to sink your teeth into. and then with
the harmonics and kim's leads, I don't know how you could describe it as
a beatle-type song, while completely forgetting blow up the outside
world, which in my mind is *far* more beatlesque than anything in ntmf.

The BMF wheel at the end is a grabber - I wonder how many people will catch it
or see it and not know what it is.. I'm sure long time fans or anyone on this
list will. It could become one of those little teaser that DJ & VJ like to
throw at people.

As for story line - its a theme about temptation to me. Each images is a
pretty noose, something that will hang you out to dry and you have to fight to
control it. "Pretty noose is pretty hate" i.e., something you love so much you
hate it, "And I don't like What you got me hanging from" i.e., because it does

I saw the Pretty Noose video on 120 minutes last night. As far as videos go,
it kinda sucked. It's shot in kind of a psychedelic tone. Here's a summary:
1)A scene at a bar. Shots of the band sitting at the bar, sitting at the table,
  Kim playing pool. (opening/1st verse)
2)Cops chasing some guy in a car. When they finally get out and bust him,
it looks
kinda like Ben, but not sure....(Chorus)
3)Bunch of people sitting in a laundromat (?) I think i'm wrong about what
the place
is but it don't matter. Probably the worst part of the vid (2nd verse/Chorus)
4)Random shots of the band, Chris up close, some woman dancing, all kinda
overlapping
each other at different points (Solo)
5)Chris sitting at the end of a bed (he's clothed, Shroom) staring at the
camera and
looking kinda zoned out (soft part where he's singing the chorus)
6)THE BEST PART!!: Close up of an eye, the BMF wheel in the center of the
eye...
(the part where it rises and Chris yells "YEAH!!")

I dunno...as I said before, it was kinda sucky. SG isn't really noted for
innovative
videos, tho. (Outshined, Rusty Cage, Loud Love(?), FoBD were all just shots
of the
band playing pasted together. I would have really liked to have seen the
SuPeRuNknOwN video, but can't get AitS to work...Oh well. Hope you guys get

I can't believe you thought FOBD wasn't innovative. They went into a

Chris in his duct tape shorts, picking up the fake skylight and throwing
