Hello, all,
I just found the listing for the artists that'll be on
the second stage for Lol. this time around...my comments follow...

> # Thirty Ought Six
My comments
	1: No Tad? Damn!
2: I recall seeing somewhere where one of the Melvins said
they'd never do Lolla. unless they got Slayer to
do it. Well, not quite...alas, they're on the half
of the tour I probably won't be seeing.
3: I'm guessing the "Indie" stage is this year's term for
the 3rd stage. Don't know if any local bands/
other stuff will be involved like last year.
4: The "Indie Stage" seems to be a bit of a misnomber,
Long Fin Killie is on American Records as far
as I know (or at least they're distributed in
the US by American.) Also, Girls Vs. Boys was
still on Touch and Go, last I heard. Oh well.

If the beer hasn't totally eroded my mind, I think we covered Mailman
last fall, and at that time the consensus was that it was literally
about a postal worker in the NW who flipped and went on a killing spree
at work. Does someone else remember the details?

esta noche Rage Against The Machine) y no puedo
ir.

Subject: HIV Baby 7"

Way back when, I had a subscription to the Sub Pop singles club, and was
lucky enough to get the 7". The only problem was it was on black vinyl, and
I knew there was a purple pressing as well. Through many miles of
traveling, while on vacation, I finally found it for $40 at Venus Records in
NYC the day before a show at Jones Beach on Long Island featuring Neil Young
with Booker T & the MGs, Soundgarden, and Blind Melon (the show where
"Kickstand" was recorded for that live B-side.) With help from some friends
that work at A&M, I got to go backstage and get my newly purchased 7"
autographed by the band. Ben asked if it was the purple vinyl version, and
hinted if it wasn't, he might not sign it. Lucky for me I found one. They
all drew on it, with Chris vandalizing his picture on the cover to look like
Gene Simmons. It is probably my most prized possesion.

Ummm... everyone is throwing out SG drug quotes, so I thought I'd do
one...
This came from Melody Maker, June 10, 1989. It's on Seth's page...

Question: Who did you model your singing on for "Beyond the Wheel" and the
astonishingly over-the-top "All Your Lies"?

Chris: "My mom screaming at me to take out the garbage or hide the pot plants
when the police came round. She just generally screamed at me like that."
- -------------------------

>Yeah, i'd like to ask Kim his opinions on existentialism and the

Now THAT'S interesting. I'd love to get a few cases of beer and sit the
man down to discuss the theories of Kierkegaard and Marx. Then I'd ask if I
could touch his beard.

>> - -BURDEN IN MY HAND:

Perverted? Mmmmm... yes, I totally agree. In fact, I think I could go
a step farther and say that it's Chris sending out more subliminal messages
in his music. ;) I'll have to wait and see the lyrics before I elaborate,
though.

HEY!! What's this I heard about an earthquake in Seattle yesterday? I
hope no one was hurt. I think it was a 5 or something? Anyone have any
details? It wasn't in the papers today...

And lastly... Kesa's GONE? Deb's LEAVING?? How many of you people
aren't going to have e-mail over the summer? This is not good. Which of
y'all are planning on giving us a JUST a 15 minute warning before they split?

I hear there was no major damage due to the Seattle quake.
Mother nature is probably a huge SG supporter and was just
reminding the world that the new album is coming! In regard
to the SG drug-use speculation, I think we're clear that SG
DO NOT partake in ANY of the hard stuff. Matt and Ben,
however, do enjoy the rich weed of the Pacific Northwest.
(Kim infrequently and Chris virtually never.) I'm going to
type an interview Matt did with 'High Times' magazine a few
years back in which he mentions that he's performed stoned
many times (for example, during the opening stint for GNR).

Actually, hasn't Chris explicitly said that it is NOT about a Postal

song which suggests it is about a killing spree.

Yeah, it (the earthquake) was like a 5.4. Freaked me out, 'cos about 12 hours
before that (in Science class) our teacher made us watch this video called
"Forces of Destruction:Earthquakes". We're like supposed to have this 8.3
earthquake sometime in the next 25 years. It wasn't that bad though but the
Mariners game got postponed, and on KNDD (the alternative station) this guy
from Everett who worked in a restaurant called in and said that 2
refrigerators fell over like dominoes. Weird. Hope that Soundgarden are
okay!!!

Wow. Congratulations to my fellow Australians on such a comprehensive and
interesting review of the new album. I'm extremely impressed! Both with
Soundgarden (looking forward to receiving that copy, Little Joe) and with
the literary skills of Bling Dog & Little Joe. Seth, how about you assign
them to be roving reporters at every Soundgarden concert so they can write
reviews for your web page? I for one would enjoy reading them.........

And it was good to read Alejandro's opinion on the few songs he's (or
she's??) heard so far. If anyone else has any reviews, I think it would be
worth writing them for the list.

See ya

Subject: kissing the snake goodbye..... :-(

Alas the time has come for me to farewell you all. I am about to write to
our man Seth to unsubscribe from this list. But before I do, I want to bid
you all adieu, for a while.

I'm about to embark on a new journey in my life, so fitting that my journey
should coincide with Soundgarden's new album life. I'm moving to another
district, another house, another job, leaving my friends and family and the
place where I grew up.

I've made many wonderful friends on this list. Thank you to all of you!!
Jamesetta, Jackhammer, Glenn, Matthew S - I'm ESPECIALLY going to miss you
guys!! I'm hoping to have a PC set up with email from home in the not too
distant future, when I'll be resubscribing, and contacting some of you. If
anyone needs to contact me, my current email address will remain only until
Friday 10 May (Australian time - that's Thursday 9 May US time). After
then, Jackhammer on this list could be contacted on my behalf. He'll be
keeping me posted on the Somms List happenings while I'm unsubscribed.

Until then, stay cool, keep smiling, and above all...........ENJOY THE MUSIC!!

Bye,
Carolyn the Mean Fiddler (thanks Matt L)

Did someone say that they have an article that they will type up about Matt
and marijuana? If so, could they (sorry I don't know who it was, but I
deleted my mail) E-mail me the typed version? I don't have enough online time
to go onto the website and download it, but if someone could send me the file
I'd really appreciate it. That's like the one Matt article that I haven't
read. Thanks!

My roommate sent this to me. I don't know if what he describes is new or
old, but it's kinda funny.

>Watching "Beavis & Butt-head" tonight, the following dialogue occurs
>(roughly):
>[While watching a video]
>Butt-head: Hey, Beavis, aren't those the Black Hole Sun mountains just
>outside Seattle.
>Beavis: Yeah, yeah, they are. What are they there for?
>Butt-head: All the Seattle bands live there.
>Beavis: Oooh.
>Butt-head: Wouldn't it be cool if we could tour the Black Hole Sun
>mountains and the bands would just pop out of nowhere.
>Beavis: That would be *cool*!
>Butt-head [imitating bus tour host's voice]: On your right, if you be very
>quiet, you'll see Soundgarden. And on your left, only if you're very
>quiet, is Alice in Chains ...

I wonder what video they were watching. Anyone?

Subject: Listening Party
From: Ben Timberlake <btimlake@nwu.edu>

Well, I met my first fellow-lister in real life last night. Toni
(Tonerkins) is even cooler in person.
Down on the Upside sounds really good. They played it very LOUD. It is
probably the loudest I will ever hear it.
It takes a few listens for me to get into an album, so I'm not absolutely
frothing at the mouth. But, I'm not worried because I know that after
about a week this album will take its place as one my favorite CDs.
I'm encouraged by the fact that the songs I liked the most were the ones
I was somewhat familiar with: Pretty Noose, Burden in my hand, Blow up
the outside world, rhinosaur, and never named.
There were free drinks and free food, too.
Incidentally, they were showing True Romance on the monitors (no sound)
which is not only a good movie (on my employee picks at BB Video) but
also features "Outshined" on its soundtrack. I was wondering if they did
it on purpose.
Really cool stuff: there were these promo posters all over the place,
sort of elongated versions of the album cover like you would find in a
music store. So I took one. Toni took, like, forty. ;)
They gave out the liner notes which include the cover (the image on the
web page that seth spotted at the music store) I think it's a cool cover,
but still can't match BMF.
I also tried to wheedle some info out of Mark Callaghan, the A&M midwest
marketing director.
He wasn't too informed, but he told me the 2nd single would be burden in
my hand (did we know this already?).
He had no knowledge of a headline tour, but said it wouldn't surprise him
if there was one.
The single for pretty noose should be out next week. He said he thought
there were b-sides.
As to any possibility of a 'special' re-release edition a la SOMMS or
follow up EP, a la AITS, he said if there were one, it would definitely
not be until next year.
He also said he would get promo copies next week and would send me one
(he gave me his card). I thought that was extra cool.
Most of the people at the party were local radio and retail workers. They
seemed to enjoy the music, but weren't that into it. It's really too bad
they don't open the listening parties up to people who really want to
hear the music.
