Uhhh... I don't know about this, guys... I got my copy of Loudest Love
(brand new, unopened) special-ordered... and I only paid $33 for it...
Japanese lyric sheet and everything (no sticker though... anyone else
get a sticker?)

the last time I was at Discount Records (which was around the middle
of March) I saw TWO brand new copies... selling for about $26...
they've been there since at least Christmas time...

since I've never even SEEN a copy of BMF/SOMMS (sob) I don't know
how much harder one is to find than the other... maybe I live in a
land flowing with copies of Loudest Love...
anyway, I wouldn't pay $100 for Loudest Love. It's pretty hard to
find, but not THAT hard...

Just because there was a NORML table doesn't mean they're into drugs. When I
read this I had to drag out my trusty folder of magazine articles because I
knew SG was (at least CC) not pro-drug. Here's what I found in the July 92
RIP:

"I don't do drugs, and the band doesn't do drugs," says Chris firmly. "It's
sort of helped us stay together. We all had, and still have, friends that do
that shit. It just creates a different world for the person who's using. You
can't really function or coexist in someone else's world if they're on drugs
and you're not. It isn't that I'm necessarily a really together guy and that
I can handle stress better than somebody who's using drugs, it's just that I
choose not to do it. It's nothing but self-destruction....
"From eleven to 14, I did drugs every single day," Chris admits. "I grew
up with the guys that had the nervous twitches and half their brains dead
because of all the shit they did...To create alternate realities doesn't
necessarily help you understand your own reality. To me, music is recreation.
Music is my drug. I realized this at 15. I was lucky to see it then."

Doesn't sound to me like someone who is into drugs. Besides, look what drugs
did to Andy Wood and how that affected Chris. Sorry, but I think you're way
off.

Hey List!

Just some useful information to pass along.

If you are a college student about to have your Internet fix
terminated for 3 months, and you live in the US with a computer and
modem....take a look at JUNO.

Juno is a free email company that is just starting up. They have a
web site...I believe the URL is (http://www.juno.com). If you're
interested in getting the software, email juno4@juno.com and you'll
get an automated reply that tells you what to do. All the information
you'll need is located in the email and the web site.

So, if you dont mind being bombarded with ads...you can get free
email. It sure beats paying the fees for a major online service. It
will also keep you tuned into this mailing list for the entire
summer!! :-)

Lastly, configure your IRC software to: irc.webmaster.com port 6667
channel: #imusic This is the location of Imusic's new chat server. If
you dont have IRC software and your browser is java compatible, you
can download java IRC software from imusic's page. But, you really
should have mIRC 4.1 :-)

If I'm not mistaken this is the location of the future Smashing
Pumpkins and SG online chat servers. So download your preferred
method of IRC now! :-)

And due to the instability of the Undernet...it might just be the home
for #somms :-)

PSA2: Those of you living in the Toronto area....CFNY will be having
an exclusive interview with SG on 14 May.

That's it...

I caught the moon today
Pick it up
And throw it away all right
I got the perfect steal
A cleaner love
With a dirty feel all right
Fallout and take the bait
Eat the fruit
And kiss the snake goodnight

Common ruse dirty face
Pretty noose is pretty hate
And I don't like
What you got me hanging from

Let your motor race
Pick it up
And get this mother gone
Out from and far away
The wooden stake
This thing has got me on

Dimond rope silver chain
Pretty noose is a pretty pain
And I don't like
What you got me hanging from

I don't care what you got
I don't care what you need
I don't want anything
And I don't like what

Subject: *Pretty Noose: Meaning?
From: Ben Timberlake <btimlake@nwu.edu>

Sorry that went out, here's what I meant to say:

What do you think PN is about (apart from what the band has said)?
I think Ben said it was like an idea that looks good at first, but turns sour.

There's a lot of energy in the song. I'd be willing to compare it to
"Mind Riot."
In accord with what Ben said, I see the best example in the Genesis reference:

Fallout and take the bait
Eat the fruit
And kiss the snake goodnight

In that, Eve thought eating the fruit off of the tree of life would put
her and Adam on a level with god, and would therefore be a good thing. It
turns on her, though, when god banishes the first humans from Eden.
The difference in that interpretation that I see is that Adam & Eve had
been warned not to do exactly that.

The refrain:

Common ruse dirty face
Pretty noose is pretty hate
And I don't like
What you got me hanging from

Seems to blame someone else for the concept going bad (What YOU got me
hanging from)
I assume that he's "hanging from" the Pretty Noose.

The "Diamond rope" and "silver chain" are examples of what materials the
noose could be made of, I suppose, further enhancing their 'prettiness'

In the end, the narrator decides he is done with these "Pretty Nooses:"
I don't care what you got
I don't care what you need
I don't want anything
A refusal to accept these wolves of ideas dressed in sheep's clothing. I
think this change in attitude is further expressed by Chris singing the
last two repeated lines of the refrain in the different, lower voice than
he did the rest of the song.

So, that's my interpretation. Doubtless, you've got a different one, and
I would like to hear it!

From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 <bcheyney@cs.strath.ac.uk>

Hah, hah - after watching MotorVision for the umpeenth time last night
I noticed a hilarious bit of camera work during 'Jesus Christ Pose' -

Just before the first verse, you see Kim doin' a bit of a shake n'
grind, while his head is flailing side to side like a rag doll! I
think the band must hve picked on this at the editing stage as they
replay it straight after! It's funny as fuck, far more than that
bastard of a clown. It hs to be my favourite past of the vid!

Well, I though someone might as well talk about Kim, even if it is
taking the piss, as it's usually Chris this and Chris that, and in my
opinion Kim is cool as fuck, I love his interviews - the guy is too
inteligent for his own good!

Also, Matt wears a Monster Magnet 'Spine Of God' T-shirt for the gig
which is cool as fuck and shows the guy sure has good taste. I've
been looking for the T-shirt for years and still haven't found it!

HI all,
It was my birthday yesterday and a friend of mine got me a SG double
CD. It has Louder Than Love and BadMotorFinger on it. I'd never heard
Louder Than LOve before and i think it is totally great.

As a sort of reply to the how do you first listen to a SG album I'd
like to say how I listened to Louder Than Love.

First of all I put it on as loud as I am allowed (i can't play it too
loud because i'm in uni accomodation and its exam time) and put it on
repeat and just listened to it two or three times.

Then i got my girlfriend and sat her down and made her listen to it (for
some unknown reason she is not an SG fan).

Lastly.....lets just say its NOT Louder Than Love :)

Subject: Re: what's pretty noose about?

I think this song is a diatribe against greed. Eve succombs to taking
the apple "eat the fruit and kiss the snake goodnight", the singer has
been stealing things from the sky "i caught the moon today" and the
"pretty noose" is "diamond rope, silver chain". But the point, however,
is that the silver chain is in fact a noose. This song seems like it's a
commentary on getting too wealthy, on having too many things: "i don't
care what you got... i don't want anything." To go out on a leap, this
song could even be a protest against the music industry, a middle finger
in the face of people who try to lure true artists with money and other
s**t. But, also, sg is on a major record label and has hit big time, so
to speak, so in a sense they already being hung by the "pretty noose".
ha..... what do you guys think?

Hey All-
Last night, after getting done with finals, I decided to finally
meet someone from this list in person. So, at about 1030,
Grote and I met outside a staple in our bar scene, Duffy's
tavern. A nice Irish like pub. Comfortable booths, mostly
wooden exterior. Anyway, we downed a nice frothy pitcher
of Boulevard ale and talked about, what else? Soundgarden.

Trippy thing is when we sat down, the intro to "Ugly Truth" came
on. The gods of Slack smiled on us, as they played "Big Dumb Sex"
"Ugly Truth" again and "Loud Love". They took "Superunknown" out
of the juke, but they replaced it with LTL. My faith that
that bar would never be turned over to chirpy frat boys who
don't know shit about music was restored. Good talk, good brew
great music. In essence, pure slack!

Subject: $.02 to the digest

There's been a bunch of interesting threads I've been meaning to reply to
and haven't had the time until now...so here's my 2 cents....

1. PN single - I finally heard it for the first time yesterday (I
don't listen to the radio much). It's great. I'm going to Spec's to
check the import section for it later today, and I'm *hoping* I can snag
some kind of promotional copy at the A&M SG party tonight...

2. First Soundgarden experience - seeing the video for Outshined after
school in 1991. I was completely mesmerized by the rawness and power and
by Chris (I'm sure you can identify Shroom...he looks amazing in this
video)...I had gotten away from harder music and hearing SG for the first
time was amazing...it sucked me right in. I went straight out and bought
BMF and have been a fan ever since.

3. I would have to say that almost every SG album I've bought has had to
take a little time to grow on me. I liked BMF immediately, but it took a
few months and a little rest for it to *really* hit me. Superunknown was
a little like that too, and it was *really* hard for me to get into
UltramegaOK, and to answer another question, my least favorite song is
"Circle of Power", it sounds really unfocused to me and I don't care for
Hiro's voice either. Everything I've bought since then I have latched
right onto, LTL is brilliant and Screaming Life/Fopp I immediately loved,
although it is different, older SG, it's still great. I'm really looking
forward to playing DOTU loud, through headphones upon buying it. Then it
will become staple in my car.

Subject: NEW SONGS!!!!!

Hello!

I'm here again to explain you how do the new songs sound like.

First of all, last week I read the message from another spanish
member of the list talking about "DE 4 A 3". Yes, this is the name
of the radio program that broadcasted 7 songs from the new SG album,
and an interview with Chri Cornell in London.

This interview was made three weeks ago by the dj himself, during CC
stay here in Europe, before the album comes out. I have this interview
on tape, but it is translated to Spanish; I can write it to you if you
want, but I'll have to translate it to English.

Ok, that's one thing.

Secondly, I have those 7 songs I told you before on tape too, and I
listen to them many times every day (it's almost half of the album).

Now, I'm gonna explain you how those songs sond like:
(don't get angry BLIND DOG :) )

- -PRETTY NOOSE: As I read, most of you have already listen to it, but
for those who has not here comes: In my opinion PN could have been
included on Superunknown. The song sounds like a mixing of "Let me
drown" and "Spoonman" (I'm sorry, I don't like to compare songs each
other, but it's the only way I know to explain how they sound to me)

- -RHINOSAUR: It sounds like a Louder than Love song, with the typical SG
riff. The song is deep and slow but it has a quick part (like "Gun")
in which Kim Thayil makes a quicky-wah-wah-solo. After this part the
song returns to its intial velocity and it ends like that.

- -ZERO CHANCE: It's a mixing of "Fell on Black Days" and "Like Suicide",
you know, strange chords and arpeggios with a beautiful Cornell's
   melody.

- -BURDEN IN MY HAND: It starts with an acoustic guitar, well, I think
it is a banjo or something; then, this part is repeated with
distorted guitars, bass and drums. The song continues changing from
one part to another. It's like "Black Hole Sun" but a bit quicker.
It has a melody so pretty that it will keep on sounding in your head
for quite a long time and you won't be able to forget it.

- -DUSTY: This song has two different parts: a sweet one with arpeggios
and a hard one with a low riff. I'm not sure if it is "dusty" because
CC repeats the words "Down on the upside" many times.

- -NO ATTENTION: It's a fast song, with that punk style like "Kickstand".
I don't know how many times does CC repeats the words "No attention"
but, believe me, maybe a hundred times. The final part is the same
   riff but played slowlier.

- -APPLE BITE: It's probably one of the strangest songs SG has ever written.
It's very slow, it sounds like a thriller film soundtrack. CC uses a
voice effect and the guitar plays 6 notes all the time, 6 notes (with
some variations) that sound like a keyboard. I like it!!!

I've heard another song : TY COBB, but i couldn't recorded it on tape....

Well, that's all for now.

SEE YOU, BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Subject: Radio broadcast

One of the local Boston radio stations, WBCN, just announced a
90 minute SG broadcast to promote the release of DOTU. The DJ said
they would play several tracks from the album, as well as a live interview.
He said it would be aired "Monday", but he didn't give the date, or a time.
This sounds like the May 13 broadcast to me, but he didn't say "next
monday", just "monday." Anybody else hear anything similar?
This sounds cool, I'm going to have to get my tape recorder out and
dust it off.

Subject: Mailman meaning

I don't think mailman is about a "psycho-killer on a rampage" either.
The song mentions nothing to suggest that. In fact, the narrator sends a
"message of love". To me it's just from the point of view of someone who
has been walked on by somebody, possibly unintentionally, and finally does
something to make the person(s) notice him/her.

This is un-fucking-believable people!! I FINALLY got SOMMS!!
Yippeeeeee!! Oh blessed be garage sales!! Yeppers... that's where I got it
at. A garage sale! I'm such a sucker for 'em, if I happen to pass by one,
I've got to stop. There's just something fascinating about poking through
other peoples junk. Anyway... this lady had a bunch of CD's in a crate.
Most of them were of sucky bands like Winger, Scorpions, Slaughter and such
(funny... she looked more like the Barry Manilow type). Then at the VERY
bottom of this pile, I found my treasure. SOMMS!! The case was all cracked
up, but the paper was in great condition, and the CD's are mint. I asked the
lady how much she wanted for it, and she said $4. AAAUUUUGGGHHHHHH!!! I
couldn't believe it!! $4 for SOMMS? After all my frustration and looking?
After all the times I mentally beat the hell out of myself for not buying it
when it came out... I find it now, when I least expected it? At a garage
sale in a podunk little town? How lucky could I get? I raced back to my car
with it, and didn't even play it. I just held it in my hands the whole way
home. I still haven't put it down. It's in my lap as I'm typing this.
Bliss!! So now I can FINALLY be added to the list of SOMMS owners!! Thank
yew... thank yew... Of course, I'm not going to stop looking for more copies
of SOMMS. And if I find one, Nothingman... you have first dibs on it, 'kay?
I am in SUCH a good mood now!!

Still my favorite SG video of all time, even if they did cut out the
guitar solo. There's just something about Chris running around half-naked,
and hanging from chains. <purrrrr> It's got some GREAT chest shots in it.
Ok... what's everyone's favorite SG video (have we already done this
thread)? JCP is really great, and so is FOBD. Has anyone else noticed that
Chris managed to throw sand in his face in both JCP and Outshined? That's
gotta hurt the eyes. Yah, I'm babbling... deal with it. I also love the way
he skips during Outshined, just like a little kid. I'd love to be a video
director. "Ok Chris... now I want you to grab those chains, and lean
backwards. Ok, great! Now I want you to beat the hell out of that log!!
Good, good!! Now throw sand in your face!! Yah, awesome!! Ok, now I want
you to... [* this part of the post has been censored for graphic content *]"
Damn, but I'd be a groovy director. Anyone see when they put Outshined on
Beavis & Butthead? I liked the comments they made about Chris.
Butthead: "This guy looks like Jesus."
Beavis: "Yah, Christ is cool."
Anyway... I'm in such a blissful mood, I think I'll order pizza and
stare at my very own (mine... all mine!!) SOMMS disks ALL night long. God
bless garage sales and the frumpy old women who preside over them...

as far as chris doing drugs:

Interview of Chris cornell, Request Magazine, October 1994:

"If it had been thrown around to me when i was 14 or 15 years old, if it was
in my face, i probably would have done it. so it could just be a matter of
availability. there seems to be a ton of it there, and everywhere else,t oo.
it's easy to get, so people will get it. that makes more sense to me than
some theory trying to make it some cultural trip that's changing.......with
all the information people have about drugs and the effects they have on
your life and what they do to you psychologically and physically, there
isn't much excuse for somebody to be screwing around with them. You can't
be naive about them anymore. you'd have to be almost a complete idiot,
unless you're suicidal."

It seems somewhere along the line I miscounted, but we now have 44 copies
of somms accounted for on the list, plus 10 owned by friends of people on
the list. So we have 999 946 more to account for. So go out and hit
those garage sales!
If anybody else has a copy, email me preferably with the word
SOMMS in the subject. I'll only count genuine copies, and assume they are
on CD unless you tell me. (there are some on vinyl I believe)
A name followed by (+1) indicates that that person also know people who
own it. I know one person myself. A number in brackets without a '+'
indicates that they own that number of copies. Clear? I hope so. See

Hello all, I owe this present state of mind to Mr. Ben Timberlake. I just
got back from the listening party in Chicago. I got to go because Ben

that this weekend will be SG weekend. They are giving away advance
copies of DOTU and will have a drawing next week. Out of the 50 or so
album winners, they will pick one person's name and he/she will get to
fly up to Seattle (airfare and hotel included), go to the listening
