Nope mine is the Australian release, it was released down here on the 29th
of April. Singles are a rip off down here $8 Australian (don't know what
that is american $4 or something)

Yeah It's cool, but I am spewing about no B-sides and all album tracks that
sucks a bit, but overall I am happy with it :) The new album is going to
sound very wierd if these songs are anything to go by.

The interview on the Pretty Noose single talks about how they named the
album. Saying that Chris just came up with it, they didn't like it so put
that name to the side for awhile. Then as the album got closer the named
poped up again and it seemed to fit with the whole mood of the album.
(Better then 'Come'n at Ya' :) As for what it mean, I think it is preety
hard to guess without hearing the whole album and releating how the name
relates to the mood of the album...It is ment to be fairly dark moody album,
so maybe it means just what it say's 'you may be down, but you can still
pick your headup' or 'you may be down, but you are still up' ummm yeah.... :)

I don't think that any of the members of soundgarden are into
that party sort of scene, whether it is as a group or by themselves.
wasn't it kim who joked that they do crosswords rather than take drugs
while in the studio? as for norml, matt and ben *did* do a hater song for
the hempilation record, but I think that only goes so far as the
legalisation of marijuana, not going around stoned out of your head 6
hours of the day. also, didn't chris say that there are no drug (heroin)
songs on superunk? maybe some of their earlier songs were about drugs in
some way, but I don't think it is the case now.

about the title: down on the upside.

on track four of the pn single (the interview with eleven), the
band says that of all the ideas for the title, dotu was the best. I think
it was chris that came up with this one, whereas kim came up with bmf and
ultramega. they just felt that dotu represented all of 16 songs, more than
some aggressive title which would only represent two or three of the
songs. I didn't like the title so much when I first heard it, but it has
certainly grown on me. matt jokes on the interview that his title of
"coming at ya!" didn't represent nearly enough of the songs :)

if you are uninterested in what down on the upside sounds like
(what are you doing on the list?), or want to listen to the record
without any prior knowledge, then delete this message right now.
otherwise, if you want to know what some of the songs sound like, read
on.

littlejoe and I have heard the new album, and we now think we
might be able to say something about it (rather than rushing head long
into it). I'm going to write a bit about a few songs and joe is going to
do likewise.

one of my favourite songs at the moment is tighter and tighter.
this song is soundgarden doing the blues, but in a completely soundgarden
manner. the lyrics are kind of difficult to understand, but I'm sure the
liner notes will come in handy. ben really seems to have the blues-type
progression well in hand, and kim brings out all his best blues licks for
the intro, the the outro, the riff itself and the absolutely incendiary
lead break (this was where mike mccready puked his brains out!). the
verses are fairly laid back, but build into the choruses, which rock :)
the chorus goes something like: 'sleep tight for me, I'm gone'. matt also
shows all his chops on this track (I'm listening to it now). his work on
the toms is *phenomenal*.

never the machine forever is a really odd song, but at the same
time really cool. its not what I would have imagined kim to write by
himself, but once you hear it, it is kind of obvious. there is no obvious
hook in the riff, not like kyle petty. and as soon as you think you have
a grip on the riff and the timing, the riff changes time and texture to
something completely different. there are two riffs besides the main one,
a cool little bridge and a weird little harmonic (this time I'm sure). I
haven't listened to it enough yet, but kim is doing quite a lot of fills
and stuff in the background. chris' vocals are hard to understand,
besides the end line of 'watch the machine die'. kim is lucky to have matt
as the drummer also, as with his uncanny sense of time changes, the song
works well. another band couldn't play this song.

no attention is fairly similar to the version heard on the
selfpollution radio broadcast, but with some additional lyrics and a
couple of parts where the riff is held for a few bars more. the chorus is
kind of repetitive, but that is ok. I'm not sure that I like it more than
the demo version, but then again, it was really good on the bootleg too.
the lyrics for it (the demo version) are up on the unofficial page. my
favourite part is where kim is sawing away at the end, when the riff is
slowed down from it's punky proportions into something much more meaty.
there are some cool vocal overdubs at the end.

I could tell that overfloater was a good song from the first
listen, but it has since grown on me even more over the last couple of
days. it comes from quiet beginnings, but soon grows to mammoth size. the
chorus gets an early airing, with chris quietly singing 'won't make it
right'. some of the guitar sounds to me like an organ, but that is just
the overall effect of the song's vibe (which is in part led zeppelin to
me). the chorus is *great*, chris at his wailing best, and followed with a
cool voice solo 'alone, alone, alone'. kim's lead break is overshadowed a
little by the rhythm guitar and chris' singing (like on mailman), but
that is cool, because it still all fits.

it is hard to understand why bootcamp gets stopped where it does.
it begins like an epic, in the vein of like suicide. a simple drum beat
and kim's hypnotic guitar open up, and then there is a radio-like voice
talking about something in the background (I think it is about politics,
which is interesting in light of the mtv interview with chris). the
lyrics are superb: 'like babies on display, like angels in a cage'.
something about he song really moves me. on first listen, I thought 'how
cool, the album is going to finish with this big epic crushing song', but
just as it builds up, it dies. I hope bootcamp (reprise) is an upcoming
bside, because even though it is great, it could have been so much bigger
and maybe better.

one song that some of us heard from bootlegs is ty cobb. I never
heard any of these, so I don't know what original demos sounded like. but
what is on the album *rocks* :) they talk on the pn interview about how
the mandolin sounded so right on the track, and I have to agree. my
favourite part of the song (and perhaps the album) is when chris is
dueting with a computer-generated voice, which sounds *so* good. you have
to hear it to believe it. I originally thought that matt wasn't really
trying as hard to put as many wacky fills and beats into the this record,
but after hearing ty cobb, I was floored. he still rules.

the first thing that struck me while listening to dusty was the
percussion, and the percussive element of the guitars. matt left his high
hat at home for this track, so there is a different sound to the song.
having just the snare drum and bass drum as the main percussion during
the verses sounds very good. trust matt to know what to play :) the line
down on the upside comes from this song (something I like, but littlejoe
laughs at).

overall, I think down on the upside is as strong as shit. the
production is great (equal with superunk). there are a lot of hater and
temple of the dog elements across the whole album, which is cool by me.
and while the production is less slick, some people may be mislead into
thinking that it's a return to songs from around the ultramega era. well,
its not true. the anger from bmf and superunk is not here. even ty cobb,
with the chorus of "I'm hardheaded, fuck you all" does not even approach
the anger and intenseness of songs like limo wreck, slaves and bulldozers
or tdittl. there seems to be more of a melodic approach to dotu, but maybe
the songs they recorded were the best ones, and not just the more melodic
ones. I eagerly await comments once everyone has heard it :)

From: LITTLE JOE <s327857@student.uq.edu.au>
Subject: i'm overfloating now...

This is a co-operative review of the new album between blind dog and myself.
We just finished drafting for what songs we would talk about.
<shaking fist at justin for getting first pick>

Firstly you can all put your fears to rest because IMHO it is absolutely
awesome. It really draws on the whole body of soundgarden work, there's a
strong totd presence and also plenty of hater/head down-ish writing by Ben.

We aren't going to bother talking about any of the stuff on the pretty
noose single because we figure that you'll all hear it or have heard it
already.

Blow up the Outside World:
I'm struggling to think of a reason why this isn't the best song I've
ever heard. It is just completely perfect. The vocal style is almost
Lennonesque in places. It's worth noting that its main rival for 'best
song' is Tighter & Tighter, also on DOTU (for the uninitiated). The guys are
obviously no slouches in the production department, this is as intricate
a song as anything on Superunknown.

I'm just listening to it now and I can't get over how amazing the vocals
are. Chris' voice at the start is filtered in a way that makes it more
haunting than ever. No vocal strain here, the song then cuts to
full-blown Soundgarden. Chris singing at full stretch like only
he can, Kim and Ben setting the world on fire and Matt perfect
and inventive as ever. This song is so damn good it will blow
you off your seat when you hear it.

Burden in my Hand:
This song is Temple of the dog meets Kim and Ben. The lyrics
are wonderful. Damn the guitar is good on this album. It is a
very hard song to describe, i guess it is like a TOTD song in
structure but with a big rolling guitar part. Chris will sing
the hell out of anyone in the world, and he's doing that right
here.

Never Named:
You get no prizes for guessing this one was written by Ben.
It's a real quirky sort of a song, but it is damn good.
From go to whoa it's frenetic and guitar-driven. The lyrics are
especially funny, but far from it being a jokey sort of a song it is
musically great. The guitar part changes up regularly throughout and Matt
is kept very busy behind the kit. The key to this is the fact that Chris
is not lost in the heavy mix, quite the opposite, the vocals and
instruments meld together very well. Think Kickstand meets Hater with a
dash of polish thrown in.

Zero Chance:
I'm going to risk repitition right here and again heaps praises on a
song. This and 'tighter and tighter' are probably (to me) the most
TOTD-ish songs on the album, but there is that unmistakable SG stamp on
it all. The start of this one reminds me of Black Hole Sun for some reason.
It is obviously not a heavy song, but damn is it beautiful. Chris is so
good on this album! Kim can play anything you put in front of him, there
is one thing he does on this song that makes me shudder it is so good,
just a little change up he throws in a few times that almost brings tears
to my eyes <wiping eyes>.

Rhinosaur:
How can you go wrong with a song written by Matt?
You can't and certainly not here.
Rhinosaur <repitition of praise warning> IMHO is strong as shit. The riff
is really unusual and kind of percussive, lots of breaks between notes.
It gives the song a great feel. There is a lead-break where the riff is
sped up in the foreground and a track of Kim going wild is playing in the
background.

Switch Opens:
This was my last draft pick. It's certainly not a bad song, it just has a
lot of competition :) Another from the Ben library which makes a strong
showing. This song changes very distinctly between its various parts. in
some places the guitar sounds almost oriental, in other places it is
down-right ghostly. As i listen to it now i would rate is as something
far more than a filler, but not quite up there with 'blow up' and
'tighter'. To put it in perspective; it's streets ahead of half, better
than somewhere and almost as good as head down.

Self-production was certainly not a problem for the boys, they do a great
job. After the
few listens I've had it certainly stacks up to Superunk. Kim seems to
have added still more strings to his guitar-bow, Chris is even more of a
lyrical God his voice is simply amazing , Ben has produced some gems of
songs and Matt is either
hiding 5 extra arms in his jacket or has done a deal with the devil to be
able to drum like he does <trying to air drum Rhinosaur><failing dismally>.

10 out of 5.

Doninton for this reason....it's a 3 day festival so the atmosphere

......Yeah...I like WZ. You're right, you cannot pigeon hole
people. I like Tom Petty as well as WZ, SG and a whole lot more...
But Reading is more diverse than Doninton so you can get the 'heavy'
stuff at Reading but maybe not so much 'alternative' (for want of a

'tradition'. Mind you, Reading started out as a heavy metal

Subject: Least Favourite SG Song?
From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 <bcheyney@cs.strath.ac.uk>

Yeah, I know this is a harder one to choose, but does anyone out there
have an SG song they don't like - or more likely just doesn't do much
for them?

I know I felt this way about 'Little Joe', 'Slaves and Bulldozers',
and 'Ugly Truth' when I first heard them , and for the longest time it
stayed that way. But now I love those three - especially 'LJ' and
'S&B'.

I suppose to me 'Hand of God' still doesn't seem to be SG's finest
moment, good song, but not phenomenal.

'Superunknown' was full of them when I first gave it a listen - I
still maintain there's too much music to take in at once on that CD.
I know it seems weird, I mean the more great music SG produce the
better, but it seemed to be too much for one go. I think it would be
better for bands to release more albums, putting less music on each.
Unfortunately that would mean paying more and not utilising the full
potential of CD, but it would mean more fresh music more often. But
'Superunknown' WAS pretty shit-hot. Ah well, can't get the best of
both worlds.

Just a thought.

That's what I HEARD, at least, and I did rent the video because of that,
and the credits did say Foo Cameron, but I dunno.. Puberty Love was a
song designed to sound awful, it killed the tomatoes at the end of the
movie :> It's a really funny movie.. it's kind of bad, but I enjoyed
it.. You would too if you like silly, stupid things. But if you took
Puberty Love and Sad McBain and compared them, you'd say No way in hell
they're both Matt Cameron. It doesn't sound a thing like him :) He's
singing in this high, falsetto voice :) But if the fan club said Matt
was in Killer Tomatoes, it's probably true.. unless Soundgarden is
pulling our legs again.. they're good at joking..

Most of the songs on Screaming Life/Fopp aren't up to the standards of the
other albums.. But from what I've heard about Little Joe live... I think the
main reason I think that is because of the production not being so good.. Plus
the raw fact that bands tend to improve with time...

I agree with you there. When I first got the Superunknown cd all I listened
to was Black days, 4th of july, and My wave. And those were the only ones I
listened to for about a month. But after a while I got used to all the
songs and I love Superunknown even more then I did before. As for least

BMF album. I wouldn't really call it my least favorite but I dunno, I just
don't like listening to it as much as I do with thier other songs. =20

I think the least favorite of mine comes from litening to Ultramega Ok to
many times. I have almost gotten to dislike the slower dirging (is that
a word?) songs on the album like the cover of Smokestack lightening which
is just to repeative. Flower also puzzles to the point of just skipping
it and He said just drudges on but the rest of the ablum rocks and the
reason I gotten to the point of disliking those songs is because I've
listening to the album to many times. Another cover I don't like is the
ones they do of Fopp and Green River's version of Swallow my pride is
superior but everything else I love and the only reason I dislike the
songs is because I've heard so many times.

In this way it is very similar to 'Ultramega OK', two clashing phrases
which have a cool and meaningless ring to them. The band joked that they
wished to name the British release 'Ultramega UK'. They're a contrary
bunch, insisting on being down when all else is up. I'm sure the catchy
aspect is why they chose it.

And on the subject of weird cover versions, following Seth's info:

The Japanese/New York band (or couple of women?) Cibbo Matto (spelling?)
cover Black Hole Sun in concert, lyrics translated into French. I'm not
sure whether it is on their album ('Viva Woman' or something). Oh, very
precise Karen, good one.

Hello all,

First off: SHROOM, that Green Jello/Chris dream was hysterically funny.
I just have one this to say to you, "You so crazy!!"

Secondly: Thinking about my first Soundgarden experience/exposure always
pisses me off. You see, I had a roommate who got a copy of Louder than
Love from somewhere, I don't know where she got it from, she didn't buy
it for herself I know that for sure. She'd never heard of SG (neither
had I), so I'm thinking it was from one of her radio station friends.
Anyway, she had that damn cassette for the 2 years we lived together and
I think she listen to it once. When she first got it, she said it was
pretty good, and I should take a listen when I got the chance. Well,
between school, work, extracurricular activities and all the music I
was collecting for myself, I never got around to it. I remember I would
see it among her cassettes every once in a while and I'd remember she
said it was it was "pretty good". Yet, the title always reminded me of the
Smiths' Louder than the Bombs. And I have to admit, once or twice, I even
whipped out my vinyl copy of the Smiths, after seeing that LTL cassette.
Completely blowing off that cassette. The next time I became cognitive of
SG was when I saw the Outshined video on MTV. I had been deeply involved
in collecting Jazz and different world music, so I kind of lost touch
with the popular music scene. I'd heard of the Seattle scene and I liked
Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but SG wasn't getting as much airtime as those
bands. So I saw the video, and went ape-shit. At the time I thought,"
heavy metal band, with good lyrics, and actual good singer, good music,
and no fucking GLAM". I went and bought BMF. I learned they had another
album before BMF, so I went to buy that. I go to the store pick up the
album and I say, almost screaming, "WHAT THE FUCK!!! This is that
DAMN cassette that I looked at for 2 fucking years and never listen to!!!"
Needless to say, I was kinda pissed.

Alas, I guess it's better late than never.

love, Gail

> tea party resemble them in quite a few ways:

the tea party is a good one, but one band which I think resembles
soundgarden in some ways (no band could be the exactly the same) is
living colour. they were once my favourite band, and I was really sad that
they broke up <rambling>.

anyway, I think there are some similarities between the two.
first, the absolutely striking songs they write, record and perform. both
their albums are full of songs that the normal hootie or oasis fan
wouldn't appreciate. both bands are so sincere about what they play, which
is one reason I admire them both. whether it is soundgarden singing hands
all over or living colour performing open letter to a landlord, you can
almost feel the emotion.

also, both bands are not only sincere in what they write, but
their actual skill at writing leaves a lot of bands (imho) in their wake.
there aren't many contemporary song writers who can outdo either chris
cornell or vernon reid and corey glover. both groups write politically and
socially aware songs, while still being able to their inner emotions and
struggles. btw, both bands recorded songs about a psychotic killer on the
loose (sg with mailman, lc with postman). I like to think there is a
connection (besides soundgarden thanking living colour in the liner notes
to louder than love).

secondly, both bands display a high level of skill with their
respective instruments. both soundgarden and living colour are built
partly on the talents of fantastic drummers, matt cameron and will calhoun
respectively. I can see a lot of similarities between the two drummers, in
that they can both play *very* well, and that they both play more than
just the drums. both are also accomplished song-writers, which is odd for
a rock band. kim thayil is probably not as technically skilled as vernon
reid, but both will tell you that defining your own style is far more
important than being able to play satriani covers without missing a note.

the two bassists (ben shepherd and doug wimbish) are different,
but both bring an energy to their band that is vital. as for vocals, their
are few more emotive lead singers than chris cornell or corey glover. both
have great voices, which don't end up sounding false once they are out of
the studio. I also find the same comparison as landrew did, where the
members of both bands can play a number of instruments.

well, that is enough pontificating and rambling by me. if you
want to do yourself a favour, get a copy of stain or time's up by living
colour. I have a feeling that if you like soundgarden, then you may well
enjoy living colour <scaring myself by sounding like green luther of the
cult of ghoul>.

exactly one hour of sleep last night, and I've still got a few hours of
studying left tonight. I'm in a pissy mood, and alot of it has to do with
the fact that I can't find the single to PN anywhere in the metroplex. I
hate people. Except for some of y'all, of course...

Subject: CHILL/7 sins/How I Got Hooked!

I said I wouldn't do it, but I'm posting again. Because I'd like to make just
two points.

1. (regarding list rules) I've been here for a long time and have enjoyed all
but the most bitter flame wars. Glad to see you guys getting over the last
one. I agree with other people, that I've gone on and off other mailing lists
due to their stifling rules. It gets fucking BORING. I would agree to a
no-chain-mail rule but that's about it. Any other rules and pretty soon there
will not be a need for rules since most people would unsubscribe or at least
quit posting. This list is one of the best I've ever belonged to and I want
that to continue. Posts on release dates and stuff are informative, and
nearly all of the rest is fucking hilarious. I LIKE threads like Soundgarden
Cereal and the Joy of Duct Tape. Email about bass tabs would become very
boring very quickly.

2. (regarding the bandwagon thing) Some of you may be lucky to be near a
band in its early stages, but some of us grew up in black holes and therefore
discover bands in later stages. Yeah, I've only got one album by Corrosion of
Conformity, but I got to see Janes Addiction when they were no one (same club
as soundgarden, but jane's cost me $7 instead of $3!) and they seem to be
earning a young base of new fans now. People's musical tastes change over
time also, and in five years you may find yourself getting into a completely
new sound, and in the process you may buy years-old cd's which you are just
discovering. Are you on a bandwagon at that point? Nope. As for trendy
people, well there's always the next big thing.

Well here's what makes this an SG post (I hate rules!!!). I don't think that
'anger' and 'envy' are the last two, but I'm miles from a bible so here
goes...

1. Pride - Like Suicide
2. Lust - Big Dumb Chex (uhh... I mean Sex)
3. Avarice - Fresh Tendrils
4. Sloth - Drawing Flies
5. Gluttony - Hands All Over
6. Anger - Head Down
7. Envy - Slaves and Bulldozers

And how I got into SG? Well I told you guys my 1989 SG concert story but
Chris Cornell spitting water in my face wasn't enough to get me into the
band. Nor was Heretic on the 'Pump up the Volume', although I played that one
just to bug my sister. Nope, one day in college a buddy and I were coming
down from one hell of a trip, and we played Badmotorfinger over and over
again on my stereo. In fact I stole the tape from him...still have it in my
car!

Peace. Thanks for being you, only more so.

Uh-oh, this guy's gonna fry. Not only is he trying to auction something off
(frowned upon by many members previously I seem to recall), he posted to the
digest. :|

From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

For those of you in the United States looking for the "Pretty Noose"
single and getting pissed at not being able to find it, it's not worth
getting mad about it. Why? Because, as was predicted several days ago,
the single was NOT released here. The fan club says it will not be
released before the new record comes out, if at all. Also, as many of
you are finding out, record stores know nothing about it, most likely
because it doesn't exist.

It has been released in Europe and Australia, so if we're lucky some
stores will carry it as an import.

I don't think anybody would, but, $100 is a lousy price for Loudest
Love, so don't get it. It is rarer than SOMMS, but SOMMS isn't as
hard to find as many of you think, you just have to look, most bands
don't even sell 100 000 copies of their album. The only SG items
worthy of that price these days are the "Nothing To Say/Hunted Down"
7" and "Screaming Life" EP on orange vinyl. Even Seth found Loudest
Love for $12 or something just recently. I had to pay $40CDN for my
copy but I was desperate, I just hope nobody is this desperate...

If anyone is considering bidding for this, *please* reconsider. I
bought _Loudest Love_ (with the Japanese insert and spin cover) about
2 months ago for $11.99. The same store always has BMF/SOMMS for no
more than $25.

Don't let people rip you off. Don't let people who post to the digest
rip you off. Don't let people who aren't even on the list rip you off.

By comparison, copies of the American BADMOTORFINGER with SOMMS are
