it surprises me that you didn't get touch me on the australian
single of rusty cage carolyn (knowing you as a big fan of the song). have
you heard show me, which is from the same single? anyhow, I think I read

hi there hope everyones well.
this might be of interest to all U.K. SOUNDGARDEN FANS.
I've heard rumours ,that there is going to be big album promo nites
for the noo album.Details are still hush hush but what i've heard
include exclusive playbacks at either local record stores or rock nights
across the country with chances to win shit loads of SG stuff.
There was even talk about competitions to win tickets to the states
to see them but don't quote me on the last one .These rumours come
from both the local A&M rep and local DJ'S who have heard from big
promotional companies in London.I am hoping to Know for definate
later on in the week, hopefully with some dates and what exactly is
happening !!!!!
anyway bye for now.
(I recommend to everyone to try and get hold of the new album by
a brilliant new British band called 'Send no Flowers'.The album
is called Juice and is out on East/West.They will be touring the
Uk with headswim next week and are playing the Rock am ring (MTV)
FESTIVAL in germany.Any body who likes SG. SHOULD LOVE THEM,so
do yourselves a favour and check them out!!!!!)

Stephanie plays the drums in Babes In Toyland (I'm assuming it's the
same Stephanie). She's a great drummer, and I had no idea until I heard that
song that she had a groovy voice (although her "scream" left much to be
desired). Personally, I don't really care for the song, because I don't
think that Chris and her were that compatible. I still think that someone
who can hit the higher notes would be a better choice for a duet. Blah.
I just listened to the cover GNR did of "Big Dumb Sex" again. Why oh why do
I torture myself so? I still find it hard to believe that SG allowed them to
put this song on one of their CD's. It's... blasphemous. Blah. Axl Rose is
such a pathetic excuse for a singer. I can't believe he thought he could do
justice to any SG song, or ever hope to compare to Chris' vocals. Ok... I've
resolved to never listen to it again. Wait... I've resolved to never listen
to ANY GNR again. Much better!!

Stephanie Barber is NOT the drummer in Babes In Toyland. Stephanie Barber
is/was Bruce Fairweather's (MLB, Green River, Love Battery) girlfriend.
During recording sessions for the BMF b-sides, someone came up with the idea
that Stephanie B. should be put out to sing the chorus to the 70's cheese
single "Touch Me" by Fancy. She had never sung before...EVER!

OK, I got about five different lyrics from 5 different people on this
line. Does anybody really know the true lyrics to "Pretty Noose"? In
addition, Pearl Jam says-new album late March? Didn't happen, now they say
late May....? huh? Yaeh, I think we all remember what happened with
"Vitalogy". Late Oct.....early Nov....came out early December....way off
from Oct. Anyway, what's going on with STP now...heard they are looking for
another lead singer. Is this true?

Nothingman- can you tell me how to order any SG or PJ or any other grunge

SG's "Four Shocks".

I had another beaut of a SG dream last night, people. I dreamt that I
was in Seattle, shopping in this huge grocery store. I kept looking for the
green jello, but all they seemed to have was red and blue. Then I noticed
that on the very top shelf (out of my reach) was a single box of green jello.
I kept jumping, trying to get it, but I couldn't. Suddenly there was this
guy beside me, and he reached up, got the box of jello, and handed it to me.
I turned to thank him, and it was Chris!! Except (and this was the good
part) he had his hair all done up in little braids just like Coolio's!! Can
you picture it? I was like "Whaaaaat in the hell did you do to your hair,
Chris?" Chris answered "Shroom... I've decided to quit Soundgarden and join
Color Me Badd!!" In case you don't know who Color Me Badd is... they're this
super cheezy singing group from the early 90's who got waaaay too much MTV
coverage. I shrieked, and started begging him to change his mind, but then I
woke up. Yah... what can I tell you? It must be the drugs. ;)

actually, I think that would officially qualify it as a nightmare... poor me.

Subject: THE GODS FROWN UPON SG!!!

oh the inhumanity!

the freakiest thing happened to me last week. i was messing around on
my computer at home doing important things (probably perusing the
incomparable somms digest :) ). my computer is an acer tower system,
so i've got two houseplants and my telephone sitting on top of the
tower unit. i leaned back to stretch a bit and caught my foot on the
phone cord, toppling the phone from its resting place and sending it
plummeting to the floor.

here's where it gets interesting (and sg related, too). during the
split second when i realized the phone was falling, i spun and got
a glimpse of the phone as it was about a foot from the ground...it was
kind of whirling around and i wasn't sure exactly where it was going
to land. anyway, lying on the floor in the general area where i
expected the phone to impact were three objects: 1) My Associated
Press stylebook (the journalist's bible, y'know), 2) A little wind-up
plastic monkey (don't ask), and 3) MY SUPERUNKNOWN CD!!!

Keep in mind that it was too late for me to do anything about the
phone's path of destruction...i made a desparate lunge but to no
avail. I watched helplessly as the phone chose its victim...falling
conveniently between the book and the monkey and landing on my beloved
cd with a bone-crunching CRACK!

I could barely bring myself to open the jewel case and gaze upon the
results of the carnage. but i did, and my worst fears were made
manifest. there, in three shattered pieces, was my poor cd. i choked
back the tears, knowing that my meager income could not support me if
i purchased a replacement copy. WHY?!?!!?? WHY DO THE POWERS THAT BE
PUNISH ME SO!?!?!?

Well, anyway, my girlfriend came over and saw me quivering in a
pathetic heap in the corner, and offered to give me her copy of
superunknown. (i made her buy it last year...she liked it--mainly black
hole sun and fell on black days--but never quite got into it as much
as i did) a ray of light shone through the abyss, and life seemed
livable once again.

however, i can't help but think of how cruel the gods above behaved in
this whole incident. have they no mercy? the AP stylebook would have
been impervious to such a telecommunications onslaught, and the
plastic monkey...god damn, he's a cute little bastard, but you gotta
prioritize, y'know? he was expendible! BUT NOT MY SG!!!

any thoughts on this travesty, folks??? i know you all feel my pain,
and i just thought i'd share...

farewell for now...

Hey people,

I was at a record fair this past weekend and found some pretty cool stuff -

I found AT LONG LAST the 'Rusty Cage' CD Digipak with 'Big Bottom/Earache My
Eye' as b-sides and the 'Jesus Christ Pose' CD Digipak so I could hear 'Stray
Cat Blues' - awesome cover. Sexy as fuck.

But what I'm really writing about is the 'Room a Thousand Years Wide'/'H.I.V.
Baby' single. This is an original copy in great condition - it even has the
order form for the SubPop Singles club on it. Anybody have any ideas of it's
worth? Anybody out there got a copy as well? I would guess a few of you do -
this mailing list is pretty dedicated.

Only 'Heretic' and 'Come Together' to find now...

Don't you think they let them play Big Dumb Sex to make an arse out of them..

Subject: First SG Experience...
From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 <bcheyney@cs.strath.ac.uk>

The first time I heard Soungarden was on MTV. I'd read about the band in
Kerrang and from live reviews they looked cool as fuck so I thought to myself -
this band may be worth hearing. I didn't have satellite so I couldn't get MTV
Europe, so I got a friend to tape me an edition of Headbangers Ball so I could
check out some bands I'd never heard, as this was pretty early on in my musical
development, way back in '89 or '90.

There was some pretty good shit on the vid early on - Kings X 'Faith, Hope and
Love' and Alice In Chains 'Man In A Box' (another conversion, another story... )
but as I was sitting there waiting for the next song to come on after the break
a wave of brilliantly constructed feedback washed over me while I watched some
cars trash themselves on the TV screen! "What the fuck is this?", I asked
myself.

When Chris's voice blended with the feedback and faded out with the band
crashing into the main riff I was fucking CAPTIVATED - there was such a feeling
of awe at this opening part of the song it's hard to put into words, it was just
undescribable - the best shit I'd heard in a long time. Every time I hear
Chris's voice floating out from the feedback I get the same feeling. EVERY
time. That's probably why it has remained my fave SG song of all time - even
after hearing all the other SG stuff. I'll never forget the impact it had on
me. Many SG tracks have come close - 'Jesus Christ Pose', the version of
'Little Joe' on Motorvision and 'Hungerstrike' (not neccesarily an SG song
but... ) are a few of tracks that spring to mind, but no other has come close
yet.

I wore the fucking video out - it's practically unplayable now, but I managed to
borrow a copy of LTL from a friends older brother which I then 'appropriated'
and still have today. It was a difficult listen at first - my expectations were
huge - but after a couple of day I appreciated songs like 'Full On Kevins Mom',
'Big Dumb Sex' and 'Uncovered' for what they were - fucking crushing
masterpieces.
Yet, for me 'Loud Love' remains the focal point of the album and I'm still
amazed every time I listen to it.

Can it be bettered?

Can't wait for the new album.

for one wouldn't mind to hear other women singing on SG songs.

Favourite song title?

 - I've always liked 'Full On Kevin's Mom', it's such a cool song with fucked up
lyrics.

 - 'Jesus Christ Pose' as it strikes such a powerful image.

Actually there's no shortage of cool SG song titles, some of them are so
abstract - Chris doesn't seem to conform to the usual 'Baby, baby' lyrics or
obviously political crap so the songs are open to interpretation and have weird
titles. Go figure.

Subject: BHS Video
From: Ben Timberlake <btimlake@nwu.edu>

I was just watching the Black Hole Sun video. I still think it's a
fantastic video and perfect for the song.
The four guys who start off the video (not the band) who are carrying the
sign: "The end is nigh" seem to each sort of represent a member of the
band. The guy with the beard would be kim, the guy in the white suit
chris, the third guy matt, and the guy with the goat ben.
It sort of seems appropriate to me that ben would have a goat.
The rationale I have for this equation is a projection of the band
members as beckoners of the apocalypse.
The four figures seem to represent the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
The way they sort of "bounce" as they walk is particularly horselike.
Early listers have probably already talked the BHS video to death, but I
just thought I would point this out.

Grant,
This may have been answered already, but I don't have the patience to read
any more of the digest. I just attempted to catch up on 5 days of
repetitiverepetitive repetitive digest letters. SG FANS, aren't we
intelligent enough to say "in reference to...", when referring to a subject
or letter that has ALREADY been posted? Is it really necessary to repeat the
entire thing over and over and over again? Anyway, in reference to your post
about why CC was asked political questions...MTV has always tried to get the
youth of this country involved in politics (i.e. Rock the Vote), and using
music and "rock stars," seem to be a sure way to get their attention. Several
bands and individuals were interviewed that week, and CC just happened to be
one of them. I don't know if you caught it on t.v. or just read the
transcript, but CC is the one who brought up the "minimum wage" thing. I've
heard him discuss the "common working man" in several interviews, and while I
don't always agree with everything he says, I thought he expressed himself
very well and came off as very sincere, especially compared to other "stars"
who are always eager to jump on some political bandwagon, with no conviction
behind what they're doing. Mal7

There are so many interesting song titles by Soundgarden. Even their album
titles are cool. And they just keep getting better - like "Down On The
Upside", the best of all! :-) Anyway, my favourite song title is probably
'The Day I Tried To Live'. Sounds so mournful and emotional. But then
there are so many other good 'uns, like all those people have mentioned so far.

I guess I should have added that to my list of what draws me to Soundgarden.
That they have a good imagination when it comes to song titles and album
titles......not only the fantastic ambiguity of their lyrics.

From: rc@gcc.cc.md.us
Subject: First Soundgarden experience...

Since everyone has been telling how they got into Soundgarden, I guess
I'll jump on the bandwagon, too. :) From what I have read, I seem to
be the last one on the list to get into Soundgarden. Anyway, it was
back in '94 (I told you). I was reading Rolling Stone, and they had an
article about Soundgarden's new album, that was due out soon. I had
never heard of Soundgarden, but I thought they looked cool (from the
picture), and there was just something about the article that drew me
nearer to them. It was a great article (even if it wasn't written
well, which I thought it was, it got me into Soundgarden). They
described a few of the songs, and I thought, "Wow, I'll bet I would
really like something like this!" So I found out when it was gonna be
released, and I bought it that very day (something like May 4, 1994).
After I heard it the first time, I wasn't impressed, but I really liked
that Fell On Black Days song, so I listened again, just to hear that
song. Then I started reading the lyrics, and realizing how great they
were. So I listened again. Then I was hooked. I listened to it
everyday, and found out all I could about them. Then, a few weeks
later, I got the Spaggetti (or however you spell it) Incedent, and
noticed that Big Dumb Sex was a Soundgarden song. I liked what I heard
of the GNR version, so I bought Louder Than Love. "DAMN!" I said,
when I heard the original version of Big Dumb Sex. I now would have to
agree with Shroom on GNR, but I must admit that Hair of the Dog is done
much better by GNR than Nazareth. So then I bought Badmotorfinger,
Ultramega OK, and I got Screaming Life/FOPP for Christmas that year.
They all took a while to get used to, but all ended up in my favorite
music piles. Then I joined this list, and heard all the good things
about their unreleased songs, so I went out and bought every CD single
I could find. I couldn't find many, and I haven't found any of the
rare stuff (like SOMMS), but I did find Loudest Love while visiting a
friend at the University of Maryland, and used my gas money (to go
home) to buy it. Oh well, sometimes you just have to make some
sacrifices.

Got the single yesterday :) Very cool :) I though it was the resiouvor

Anyway was a bit disapointed it had 3 album tracks! (NO B-SIDES!!!) the
interview on track 4 is cool tho :)

As for the songs.......Pretty Noose we all know and it's very cool.

Applebite....almost an instramental...vocals are well hidden behind the
mix so you can't really hear them, but it fits with the song..sort of
song to get lost in.

An Unkind .... Fast rocking number :) Think kickstand. But again vocals
hidden a touch....Very cool song :) Sorry about the lack of details I am
in a hurry.

One other thing I am wondering tho...WHY all the vocal tricks! Chris has
the most awesome voice..I think he should use it clean ofg vocal effects
etc. Well I like it more without the effects anyway. Only 2-3 songs on
the album don't have effects with the vocals...but still the music is
rocking so I am happy!

Anyway what songs are on the other UK release of Pretty Noose?? I check
at an online cd shop and there are 2 versions of the single.

I know this might seem weird when we're on the verge of a new album, but I've
always been curious about the song "Uncovered" on Louder Than Love. Does
anyone have any ideas about what the song might mean? For those of you who
may not have the album, here are the lyrics:

Small creature are you
Small creature you are
How quickly you are uncovered
Naked and cold
Mumbling and crying
Knowing everything's been discovered

Many secrets have you
Many secrets you have
But it's only a matter of time
Did you finally decide
There's nowhere to hide
And really no reason why

Hey Mr. Shame
Have you got a name
I don't feel like calling you Buddy
I don't want to hear your story
I don't want to hear why
And I don't even care if you're sorry

Many secrets have you, etc.

Strong is your body
Strong are your bones
Strong as your bloody lie
is uncovered

Small creature are you, etc.

I can just imagine the response this will get, but here goes. I've always
thought the song was about finding out about an abortion someone had (an old
girlfriend?) that they hadn't told him about. What do you guys think?

Other songs I'm curious about are Flower and Toybox. Anyone want to venture
an interpretation of those? Thanks.
Kathie
