Hey everyone,

Just thought I might let Aust. members know that Richard Kingsmill has done
at interview with Kim Thayil and it's being telecast over the coming weeks.
One part was on today (sunday at about 5:00pm) the rest is ment to be on
during the 96' segement on Sundays (2pm till 7pm) I think. I got the first
part on tape and will try and type it up if I get time. Wasn't that
interesting. I don't know if he is interviewing any other members tho. I
guess it'll probably be on the 3 hours of power, tuesday nights aswell.
Hopefully JJJ put it up on their web site: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/
That will save me typing it :)

And Skinny's told me they hope to have the Pretty Noose single in store
TOMORROW :) (29th) let's hope so.

Subject: The meaning of 'Down on the Upside'

Hard rock bands are known for their indulgence in drugs, groupies and
partying. For many bands, these indulgences constitute the "upside" of rock
stardom. Soundgarden, however, isn't into drugs, groupies and partying. So,
they're "Down on the Upside." What do you think?

From: wxs129@psu.edu (Kesa)
Subject: Favorite SG song title

I think my favorite SG song title would have to be Fell On Black
Days. Before I'd ever heard the song I heard the title and I remember
thinking, "I have to hear this song." A lot of times I like cold, dark
songs like this and just judging by the title I could tell this was going to
be one of those. And I was right; the intro and verses seem particularly
cold to me. I'd like to hear Chris Cornell sing it without going into the
higher vocal ranges some time, kind of like he did for the acoustic Like
Suicide on AITS. Don't get me wrong, I like it when he sings in that higher
screaming voice, but just for the sake of variation (and I'm also in love
with acoustic Like Suicide).
And speaking of CC's higher screaming (singing) voice, does anyone
besides me think that he kind of misses the really high note in Hunger
Strike? It's on the first "I'm going hungry (Vedder)...I'M GOING
HUNGRYYY---YYY! (Cornell)". When he tries to hit that REALLY high part in
"hungry" it seems to me that he is a fraction of a half step too high (talk
about too good a singer). Just on the first "I'm going hungry" right after
Vedder's verse.
And another thing about Hunger Strike. Is it "I'm going hungry" or
"I'm growing hungry"? Both agree with the title of the song. I always
thought it was "going", but the lyrics with the album say "growing". And to
me it really sounds like it's "going". Any insights?

I went into my local music shop to ask about a release date for
"Down on the Upside" and they said Monday 20th May. Does this
mean that us lucky people in the U.K. will get the album before
everyone else? I know that when AIC's last album was released, the
UK date was a day earlier than the USA. I suppose it's something to
do with the time difference.

Remember that contest to win the Soundgarden snowboard? Well, in the
new issue of Hit Parader, there is a tee-niney little article about it.
Alice in Chains, Candlebox, and Soundgarden all made a visit to the K2
company to design and watch them build the snowboards. They even said,
"Chis Cornell was very interested in watching them make the snowboard."
Or something to that effect. There's also a picture of some members
from AIC, Candlebox, and SOundgarden standing in, on, and around a car.
I only noticed Kim and Chris (Chris being the one standing on the car)
being there from Soundgarden, but it's a small picture, and I didn't
have time to look long. I think it's pretty cool that one of my heros
seems just as interested in something I'm so interested in.

When I first looked at Badmotorfinger, I saw a song called Room a
Thousand Years Wide, and it caught my good eye (which didn't happen to
be closed at the time....I wasn't searching). So anyway, I REALLY
wanted to hear that song, because I always look at the titles and see
what I wanna hear first, but I still listen to the beginning of each
track when I first get it, I just pay extra attention to the ones that
caught my eye. One reason I found it so interesting, is because I
always use weird analagies...or something, when talking about time,
length, or ather stuff. Like, "Wow. His car is a year long." and
stupid stuff like that. It's a great song, too, and I love the lyrics.
Kim wrote 'em, too. He rules.

First, a little PSA. I thought this was obvious, but I guess not. While
posting to the list, let's all keep a few things in mind.

1) The only person who has the right to dictate what we can post is Seth.
Period. If it is Soundgarden related, it is on topic.

2) If you insult someone publicly on the list, you should expect the same in
return. So once you do, don't start mewling about how someone should
have contacted you by e-mail, when you have not given them the same courtesey.

I think these are things we can live with, don't you?

Now, on to happier things.

Does anyone know when they are going to start showing the Pretty Noose
video MTV? And did we ever clear up what was going on with the single?
First it was supposed to be released on the 24th, then I heard the
29th. What's the real deal here?

Readers,
One of the best aspects of SG is the lyrics to their songs.
Cornell and crew continually pen lyrics that go way beyond the cliche pop
song b.s. and actually make you think. In the lyrics I have been able to
connect and disconnect. I remember reading in Rolling Stone about a year
ago, Cornell talked about lyrics to some of his songs, explaining J.
Christ Pose and 4th of July. Though he said the songs were about
completely different things than I had thought, it made me listen to the
songs more closely, and read the lyrics. I like the fact that what I get
out of the lyrics might not be what another person gets, or what Cornell
was writting about.
On another note, on the official SG web page they have an area
where you can sample songs from the new album. It says you have to
install some sound program. Could someone please explain to me how I
download the sound program? If you haven't seen the page I strongly
suggest you do. They have samples of Rhinosaur, Pretty Noose and a
couple others. I need help with the sound program because I know so
little about computers, please help.

Its hard to describe why I like Soundgarden, because the reasons are so, I
guess, internal. Their music moves me emotionally and physically. I love
their lyrics, especially CC's. The first time I heard them I had been
sleeping on the couch during an especially boring Headbangers Ball and woke
up to the first strains of Loud Love. In a sleepy daze my heart started
pumping faster and I sat up, enthralled. Not only did the music and this
great voice grab me from the inside, but the lead singer was also gorgeous.
The next day I started finding out all I could about them and immediately
started collecting their music. Of course the first thing I bought was
Louder Than Love, but after that I don't remember when I bought what. My
devotion to the band increased each time I read an interview or saw them
live, because along with the music was a group of guys who seemed
intelligent, down to earth and anti-hype. Their integrity continues to
impress me.

Someone else asked if we ever get tired of SG music. I never do. That
doesn't mean I listen to them constantly though. I listen to what I'm in the
mood for, so sometimes I go quite a while without listening to them. That
doesn't mean I'm tired of them, just not in the mood. I have so many SG CD's
that it would be pretty hard to get bored. I'm tired, and I'm making too
many mistakes, so I'm gonna stop for now.

I agree with you here, Seth. I'm SURE that it's "bait". Certainly a word

Well, whatever it is, I don't reckon it's "velvet". I'm sure whatever it is
starts with a D. (seems Gregg thinks that too - see below). Maybe
"dirty"?? Naa, sounds more like "down the rope, silver chain....."

At 12:17 AM 21/04/96, Gregg wrote:

Oh shit, now that bit has just passed on the radio and I missed it. After
reading what Gregg has written, I'd like to hear it again - maybe it IS "Tie
the rope, seal the chain".

Any other comments??

By the way - last night Triple J played back part of a recent interview of
Kim Thayil. Anyone else hear this? Quite interesting, I thought. He was
discussing the seriousness of Soundgarden's lyrics and music - and talked
about what the band goes through when recording a new album (even the making
of wallets with duct tape by Chris was talked of). Apparently over the next
couple of weeks (Sunday nights, probably) the whole interview will be played
back.

it from Germany. And that is that, noting more to it! It really is

Green Bay is crap.

Well give me acouple of minutes to go get the CD and I'll post the lyrics

P.S. The single is called "Pretty Noose" and it has "SoundGarden" in red

(Lyrics+Music Chris)

I caught the moon today
Pick it up
And throw it away all right
I got the perfect steal
A cleaner love
With a dirty feel all right
Fallout and take the bait
Eat the fruit
And kiss the snake goodnight

Common ruse dirty face
Pretty noose is pretty hate
And I don't like
What you got me hanging from

Let your motor race
Pick it up
And get this mother gone
Out from and far away
The wooden stake
This thing has got me on

Dimond rope silver chain
Pretty noose is a pretty pain
And I don't like
What you got me hanging from

I don't care what you got
I don't care what you need
I don't want anything
And I don't like what
You got me hanging from

Here are the lyrics to "Applebite"
(lyrics Chris/music Matt Cameron)

No one can save
The pure or the brave
No one can save them at all
Grow and decay
Grow and decay
It's only forever

Loosely or tightly
Everything fits
Even the wrists on your arm
Grow and decay
Grow and decay
It's only forever

(Lyrics and music: Ben)

We see the vipers of distance
Crawl into our lives everyday
Breeding our Edens of hatred
Pathetically stupid and unkind
We couldn't look a saint in the eyes

On the storm
It's time to go
On the storm
It's time to go

Marching in lines of contradiction
Forgetting the history we make
Loving our hangmen as the
penultimate joke
We lack the Moses...to look
A saint in the eye

*This is a short but sweet song. It is only 2:08 long, but that is only
as long as it should be! It is not like a punk song at all, just short
and powerful! It is however very fast and speedy, I like it alot

There is also a very cool interview given by the band "Eleven", which is
quite amusing to hear(you know how SG gives interviews!).

Well I just hope that I could be of some asistance to all of you, and I
hope that you can get some use out of these lyrics.

my friend who played in my short-lived band had the tape of bmf
at school, and was lending it to a mutual friend. I listened to it, and
demanded that I get to borrow it next. the next night, I listened to the
tape about three times, while doing a history assignment. I couldn't get
over the cool way-out-of-time end to rusty cage, or the sheer heaviness
of slaves and bulldozers.

as for why they are special to me, it is probably (this may sound
obvious) the songs they write and the way they play them. a big part of it
for me is matt, because as a one-time drummer, I listen very closely to
the drums in music, sometimes to the exclusion of everything else. and
as we all know, matt is a mastermind :) but overall, it is because the
band is so cohesive, and because each musician is so good (both with their
respective instrument and in that they all write music) that there is no
other option other than soundgarden :)

Best song title - Fell on Black Days. I love the song, the video, and I love
that F.O.G. covered it at their first show and dedicated it to me..

What drew me to SG, their sound, their presents. I grew up listening to Led
Zep, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Nazareth, and my favorite Rory Gallagher.
Then I had to face the late 1980's and early 90's. The wonderful sounds
I love were no longer there.. Then the "Seattle Sound" hit the air. Bands
like Pearl Jam, AIC, and our wonderful Soundgarden started making music
- - - real music again.

It can speak to you like no other music can. When your down, it takes you
deeper, but holds you firm. When your up and happy - put on BDS and laugh at
the world. Ages ago we had a thread about what was your favorite line or
phrase in a SG song. Mine was the single word "Damn" in BDS - in that single
second Chris gives out more feelings and understanding. He takes you to
places that you never want to leave. No matter what you're feeling emotional -
Soundgarden's music is there for you. They are a unit, they create together,
the play as one, they fit.

Oh, by the way I'm now on the list of owners of BMF/SOMMS - picked it up for
$10...

Ok, after battling with one sucky mac after another, i finally found one
i could trick into believing that i had performed the necessary

Maybe it was just me and the crappy

Hey All-
Just heard 'Pretty Noose' on the radio. Gotta say at first, it sounded
like a experiment in tripped out sounds. But I heard it again the same
day(finally :) ) and it grew deeper in me. Now I actually feel areas
of my cortex deepening and getting the sound locked on. Damn, I can't wait
until May 21st :)

Favorite title-Louder Than Love. Plus its a great album cover. I hope Chris
grows his hair out again(hey, Kiss got back their makeup, this is sort
of the same thing, right??), his hair was the elusive 5th band member,it
had a personality all of its own, as the cover showed.

"Pretty Noose"-just remember, the single that SG releases from their albums
are usually the weaker tracks, as opposed to artists who immeidately release
their best cuts. "Spoonman and "Outshined" both were first releasers and
most of the tracks on both albums were superior.

Yep. I have been getting money for a while, but I don't have it all
yet...maybe 30 or 40 so far. Keep them coming. If you haven't sent
your money yet, DO IT NOW! And remember, try to get a money order. I

Hey All-
Since da Shrooms girl reminised over listening to Louder Than Love in 89
Suppose I should relay my own experience, just cause. 1989, I was
playing Metal gear(Nintendo gave where everyone gets the shit blown
out of them) and blaring LTL for the first time with my best friend.

"Gun" came on. Slow, sludge, ass kicking, but the chours tripped us out.
We looked at each other and shook our heads. "I want to be gay--eh
gay--eh, gay--eh" Was that right? What the hell? We were listening to
an album that made us burn our Poison and Winger tapes and a fucked
up chorus like that came on. After grabbing the lyric book, it
wasn't gay, but it was "I want to be king" Still, did anyone else
have the same weird experience when they first listened to this song?

If you do, my advice to you is..
seek professional help :)

Kathie, you have a great mind. Drawing Flies is one of my top three
favourite SG songs, so I've been really interested to read people's
interpretations of it. And yours is such a good one! :-) I never thought
of it that way before, so tonight when I give it another blast I'll keep
your idea in mind as I head-bang away to it.

Which brings me to what draws me to Soundgarden.
Good idea Moppy! (cute name).

1. I love the ambiguity of their lyrics. I find it fantastic that so many
people can identify with so many of their songs, all in different ways.

2. I adore the raciness of their sound. Yes, Garden of Sound. Their very
name should draw people in. Pure pumping energy - it's so great! I've been
listening to LTL more and more lately (I like going in cycles, listening to
one of their albums for several weeks, and then changing to another - in the
next few weeks it will be Fresh Deadly Rarities, thanks to my buddy Ross -
but I digress) and the raw power all those songs exude make them
exhilarating to listen to. Uncovered, Full on Kev's Mom, Loud Love, Hands
All Over, Gun, BIG DUMB SEX.....wow wow wow!!

3. I like the fact that it takes several listens of a new SG album for it
to really sink in and become one of the favourite albums in my collection
(which is well in excess of 700 albums these days). To own so much music
and yet to have nearly every SG album up there in my top 20 is a tribute in
itself to SG.

4. And finally, I like the uniqueness and obliqueness of this great band.
The fact that not many people in this world know the brilliance of Chris,
Matt, Ben & Kim (typed in no order of importance) makes me feel all the more
special to be lucky enough to know of Soundgarden.

And that, I guess, brings me back to this great Somms Mailing List. I feel
special to be a part of it. So let's just let sleeping dogs lie, 'eh, and
get back to our happy little loving community. ;-)

No, don't do that Jessie. Many people have posted on what makes a true fan

into Soundgarden - the fact that you're on this list and you like SG is enough!

Funny you should mention that - in the past this has been brought up and
some suggestions then were Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Delores
whateverhernameisfromCranberries, Bjork - but I've just been lucky enough to
hear SG's "Fresh Deadly Rarities" compilation and on it there's a song
called "Touch Me" sung by Chris and a girl called Stephanie Barber. She
sounds good with Chris - compliments him well. Can someone tell me if she
was/is in another band? I haven't heard of her (being non-American could be
a reason for that).

>Maybe Johnette Napolitano? She's got a good pair of lungs. She's finally

I agree she has a GREAT voice. Yes, she'd be good. For a soft feel, what
about the girl from Cowboy Junkies? Or for an Australian edge (and this
will only mean something to the Aussies, I guess), the girl from Spiderbait
would be perfect - she has a very solid but not deep voice.
