I've also added it to the Web page (for what I believe to be a crappy

I downloaded that SG theme tonight, and you're right Seth. It's a piece
of crap. My suggestion to everyone running Win 95 is to make your own SG
theme. I played around with the desktop on my computer tonight, and I came
up with THE most STUNNING Chris Cornell/SG theme ever. I took an absolutely
gorgeous picture of Chris (which I liberated from the page), renamed it as a
.bmp, and used it as my wallpaper. I made a few groovy icons out of
different SG pictures I clipped (such as Chris' eye, guitar, face). Then I
added some SG wavs I made (Chris saying "Bye, folks", Chris saying "Ok,
everybody take off your shirt!!", etc...). The only thing I used from that
original SG theme was the screen saver. I am so jazzed about this thing!!!
It may take awhile to get everything just how you like it, people... but
it's worth the effort!! I swear... I'll never turn off my computer again (oh
wait... I never turn it off anyway... ummm... never mind).

Hey, fellow listers!

I'm back after a longer than expected absence. I ended up being on
digest--thanks Seth--for 2 1/2 weeks! 10 days of that were spent in
Germany and Italy. In a word, if you ever have a chance to go abroad,
esp. w/ a tour group so you get better rates and don't have to drive,
DO IT! The bad news is that while I was gone, my mother died--what
wondeful news to get hit with when you get off the bus from the
airport, yes? So I took all of last week off to help get things
settled. I'm back now! Just wanted you all to know, in case I've
missed emailing anyone I'm in touch w/ regularly.

NOTHINgMAN--is it too late to send you a money order for my tee shirt?
Geez, miss a few days and the world leaves you behind! I saw no
deadline in the digests...

I noticed a few new people coming on the list, and I noticed a few
questions about a Sg fanzine and someone was mentioning Syzygy in my
absence. If you know about this, stop reading here; if you're new and
heard something someplace, let me settle things.

Syzygy is a music zine that concentrates on the "Seattle scene". We
put in as much Sg (and AIC) news as we can in every issue, but we are
not just a Sg zine--too limiting. We do work closely w/ Silver
Management and several other Seattle managements, so we get real
news--ie, we don't just rehash stuff from magazines that's old news
anyway. B/c of our ties w/ Silver Management, we've been given alot of
opportunities to interview some of the up and coming bands in the area.
One you'll hear alot about from me is Inflatable Soule--great music,
great people, AND 3 Cornells in one band. CC's brother Peter is the
lead vox, and 2 of the sisters also do vox, percussion, etc. Other
bands we've covered or will be covering include Citizen Swing, Give, 50
Paces, Sweet Water, Lazy Susan--that's just a sampling. If any newbies
want more info just email me.

OK fellow listers, thanks for letting me fill in the gaps I saw
springing up on the digests. I know a few people have told me not to
bring up the zine or that some on the list don't like it, but Seth did
a web page for the thing after he saw it, so....but that'll be the last
time, probably, b/c I'll only have email for about another 6-7 weeks.
Check out http://www.sgi.net/syzygy and yes, there is a picture of Inf.
Soule there so you can check out the Cornell sibs!

I missed everyone while I was gone! ti amo! ciao! deb

Is that a coincidence or what? The same thing happens to me!! In fact, I

just so there's some hint of sg content in this message, i went to media play

SL/fopp, and even the flower single. i'm pretty sure i got all the albums now,
so sg joins an elite club or gets an award or something.... it's quite an

also, if anyone's down in da dumps because they think they're the last ones to

I think it's a good thing, it would probably spoil the album to have heard any
of the songs before the whole album, besides which, I have no means of hearing
it since I can't afford an international call and this network doesn't handle
sound.. But I'm glad about that, cause I'm not gonna get tempted into spoiling
my listening pleasure of the new album.. :)

I believe it's just supposed to begin radio play today; it occurred to
me last night, because of something Blind Dog mentioned to me, that
the single would probably be in stores in the US on this coming
Tuesday, April 30. It will probably be available to the rest of the
world on Monday, April 29.

If anyone can back this up, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have been to a few lollapaloozas and it's pretty much complete
pandemonium. If you even have to buy a ticket to your days show, you are
seeing it at the wrong place. The way some of these outdoor shows are set
up, people from the woods around the concert area flood the field. And to
answer your question, yes bring whatever you want(I think?????????)!

Readers,
On yesterdays page a number of members wrote and responded to
Soundgarden selling out or becoming "soft." To this I say bullshit.
First in using the word soft what do you mean? If you are going to make
such a statement please clarify. By saying soft I think you are saying
SG is compromising their sound to sell records. Is that what you are
saying? If so bullshit! Popular music, as Thayil said, is moving towards
soundgarden, not visa-versa. What is the popular music of today? Who
knows? Anything from Green Day with a continuous repetition of power chords
to Coolio. Basically I want to know what you think soft is.

Subject: Moving the bandwagon along!
From: tonerkin@usa.pipeline.com (Tonerkin)

I have been reading the posts on bandwagons and having to share Soundgarden
with interest. I understand where people are coming from there is nothing
worse than dealing with a person that is subscribed to the "t-shirt of the
month" philosophy of liking the newest "hot" band. And yes, after seeing
your favorite band in a small venue and than having to troop to a large
arena and see little ants on stage is tough. BUT you must remember if
there is no one that gets on that wagon a band will continue to play small
places but eventually if they have a record deal a record company will only
keep them as long as they sell units. And soon your fave band is gone. No
matter how talented a musician is if they don't have a big enough actively
buying fan base they will fade away. A good case in point is the Irish
guitarist Rory Gallagher. He never got that elusive "hit" and after a few
albums and small tours he disapeared. He was a great guitarist (right
Jamie??) but he is mostly unknown to all but a small fan base. He died
this past winter. He never stopped playing but alot of you don't know who
the hell he is!!
So let's welcome a few new band wagon members OK?? There are worse
things like getting old and having young snot nosed kids tell you that a
band that has always been dear to your heart sucks and are dinosaurs. Or
worse yet, you have to listen to an "oldies" station to hear some of your
faves!! Toni

I was trying really hard to catch what it was about Nirvana, cause I
heard it, too. I think that the chord progression or maybe the bass
note prog. sounds a lot like "In Bloom' on Nevermind. The way the
guitar is played, with the palm muting in-between the actual chords,
(if you listen for it, you'll know what I mean) sounds like Kurt's
style, with his picking hand always keeping the rhythm. I DO think
the song's in Dropped-D, though.

I was also wondering if anyone knows about tattoos on the various
group members. Do they have any? Maybe for a thread what do you guys
think about what would be a cool SG tattoo? I like the little symbol
on the Ultramega CD that looks like two L's with two other lines. I'm
getting that tattoo ASAP.

I definitely don't want SG to disappear... but I've got to admit, when I

think that it sucked. That way they would go back to playing clubs and I

puts out. BMF newbies weren't that bad... but Superunknown kinda got on my
nerves. Well... at least it won't last that long. The people who actually
like the music will end up staying and becoming friends, and the poseurs who
buy the CD because a few songs were on MTV... they should disappear after a
few months. Right after Lolla, I'm hoping. <sigh> Oh well... it's not like
we really have any say about it anyway... Heheheh... imagine being able to
decide who gets to listen to your favorite music, and who doesn't... that

It takes about a week or so for them to receive it, and they send out the
packages at the beginning of each month. I emailed them and asked about
the status of mine, and that's what they told me. So you should get

Subject: First listen...

As many list members have already realized, the first listen of
any SG album is an almost religious experience, and conditions
must be just right in order to get the full effect... :)

My first listen :
1. Headphones. this way I don't have to worry about outside
distractions, noise, or fire alarms. I can listen as loud as
I want, whenever I want...
2. Alone. two reasons for this : one, none of my friends are
really into SG (bastards! :) two, even with a group of people,
I'd be too busy wondering what everyone else was thinking, if their
opinion was the same as mine, etc. It wouldn't change MY opinion
any, but I'd like to know what everyone was thinking... I can
concentrate solely on the music this way...
3. Other stuff... on the first listen, I listen to the entire
album, start to finish, no interruptions. after that i will
listen to the songs that caught my attention, then I will go
back to playing the whole thing... all SG albums have grown on
me... which is good since I can go back and listen over and over
without overplaying it... the only SG songs I've liked instantly
(first listen) are Spoonman, Rusty Cage, Drawing Flies, Hunted
Down, and Like Suicide...
I'll never read the lyrics until about the 3rd time through...
if I do, I'll be busy trying to figure out how they'll be sung
along to the music that's playing... distraction! hurts the first
time, I think... I'll read the CD booklet before I listen, just to
see the layout and the art... occasionally I'll pick up the book
in the middle of a song, if a lyric really grabs my attention, then
I'll look it up just to make sure the words are what I thought I
heard... after the first listen, I'll look through the book about
eight thousand times, just for the hell of it...
(though I end up memorizing the lyrics by hearing them in the songs,
NEVER by reading them off paper...)

Hmmm... guess I'm done... can't wait to actually go through this
process on May 21st (no turntable...)

Not at all, Blind Dog. To each their own. If that's what she wants to

to you, but perfectly reasonable to her. But I believe she made another post

Yes.

Where in hell do you live that it was a *dumb* idea? Was it more dumb

Excuse my French, but what the fuck do you have shoved up your ass, a

retentive, narrow minded attitude. Why do you have to ruin things for
people, Scrooge? You are a blight on this list. Any time someone wants

on it.

"A sad day for somms"? When are you going to get this through your
thick skull? How many times do I have to repeat myself? (I'm starting
to sound like my mother :) ) You are not here to dictate what should
be discussed on this list. This list would be a great deal more boring
if Shroom weren't on it. Why shouldn't we discuss things besides the
music? Why shouldn't we have many different topics? There's only so
many times you can do a poll of what everyone's favorite song is
before everyone gets bored. Didn't I already tell you that? You are so damn
hard-headed!

I didn't say that most of the listers enjoyed this kind of thread, nor
do I care. I do know, however, that there are SOME of them who enjoy it, so
I feel perfectly justified in starting it. Ummm... and in case you haven't
noticed BLIND Dog, but Chris is the main "sex symbol" in the band. I know of
people who find Matt and Kim more attractive than Chris, but as I started the
damn thread, I put Chris in it. Kapeesh? (My spelling is OFF tonight.)

>'...and maybe cut a lock of his hair'? what a boneheaded idea.

I'm beginning to think blind dog lives in some kind of alternate
universe. What is "boneheaded" about cutting a lock of someone's hair?
Is this something everyone learned in school, and I was just absent
that day? People cut locks of hair all the time-you know your baby
book, where your mom put some of your hair when you got your first
haircut? Is that also "boneheaded"?

P.S.- I see that you're a student. Avail yourself of the mental health

Mmmmmm.....no. If there's a "blight" on this list, it sure as hell isn't
Blind Dog. After all, he's helped Seth immensely with the page and with
putting together the FAQ. What have you done, Heather (besides talking
about going through Chris' wallet and cutting his hair)? Why wouldn't you
just rip Chris' pants off and fuck him? Wouldn't that be more of a
"memento" than a lock of hair (spot the sarcasm)?

> I feel perfectly justified in starting it. Ummm... and in case you haven't

See? That's what I mean. Buttrockers like Bon Jovi get to be famous because
they're viewed as sex symbols, not because they're talented musicians.
I'd hate to see anyone ask Chris for a lock of hair before he or she
asked him for a guitar lesson.

> that day? People cut locks of hair all the time-you know your baby
> book, where your mom put some of your hair when you got your first

Yeah, because if you cut all the locks of hair, the person would
literally be boneheaded. That was a joke (no hair left, bald,
"boneheaded".....ha ha?).

Nope. Here's a better idea, Heather. Let's take a poll of how many people
really get fed up with constantly hearing about Chris' "sexy" body and
shiny hair. Let's see who would rather talk about what made him famous in
the first place: his musical ability. Then we'll use that data as an
excuse for you to start your own "We're Nymphs for Chris" mailing list
while the rest of us continue to talk about _Down on the Upside_. It's
not that your posts bother me; I don't even read them. But for someone who
claims to be such a big Soundgarden fan, you sure don't seem to care much
for their *music*. If you did, maybe we'd see more than "hair clipping"
and "let's count the ways we can make Chris orgasm" posts from you.

Ross

P.S.--I'm serious about the poll.

"If you were mine to give

Its cool how we interpret lyrics differently, thats whats nice about
ambiguous lyrics. Actually I see no references to death in this song. I've
always seen it as a description of the struggle to write a song.
"I fire a loaded mental cannon to the page" and "Firing the pistol that
shoots my holy pride" imply writing to me. And it seems like Chris has a
real problem with people trying to censor music, so in this song there seems
to be a struggle with what he'd really like to write and what he's afraid
some people's reactions might be. I think the x's in his eyes are maybe some
"impure thoughts", which goes along with "wallowing in my own obscenities".
Perhaps the "wet ashes" imply how he feels about having the censors throw
cold water on his ideas "Hey what are you yellin' about, conditions,
permission, mirrored self affliction." And finally, "used my inspiration for
a guillotin" could imply his feelings about right wingers or others
attempting to censor his creativity trying to hang him with his own words.
Anyway, thats what I've always thought the song was about.

Sorry guys, I'm sure I'm not the only getting fed up...this is with
respective to the original "finding Chris Cornell unconscious" topic.

I'm not taking any sides in this "argument", "flame war" or whatever you
would like to refer to it as. What started as a relatively harmless thread
has turned into something harmful - people attacking one another, people
defending one another, people defending/attacking people defending/attacking
one another...

This is a simple plea to stop - write OFF the list if you are so heated on a
personal level and the mail has lost any connection to Soundgarden, as so
many letters related to this thread have. The original thread WAS
Soundgarden related. These defenses/attacks are NOT.

Remember in flame wars that the people concerned with the post are not the
only ones burnt when you post to the mailing list, plus people connected in
the mail have the reputations unnecessarily tarnished.

Let it go!!!! And if you are still heated, MAIL OFF THE LIST.

I doubt it, Nothingman. It was a very simplistic theme in the first
place. One icon, some wav sounds that my computer wouldn't even recognize,
one admittedly cool screen saver (but not of SG which was a bummer), two
cursors (which suck), and two kind of cool wallpaper .bmp's. The wallpaper
(in case you didn't get to look at them) are of the cover of Superunknown,
and the picture of the band from BMF. And that stupid icon is just of some
old guy with his arm in the air. If anyone gets those wavs to play, let me
know what they're of, 'kay? If any of you people are pissed 'cuz you can't
get it to work... don't be. It's not really even worth downloading it. Make
your own themes. I promise you it'll be better, especially if you use a
tasty picture of Chris half-naked as your wallpaper...

Speaking of shiny hair, as I was flipping through the new Hit Parader
today, there was a picture of Chris singing on stage, and his hair was
all fucked up (in a cool fuck up sorta way like it usually is) and
instead of being shiny (with oil or whatever he puts in it usually) it
was all bushy and un-shiny. I was impressed, because I used to have
hair JUST LIKE THAT, except blonde. Now that's another thing I can

Puh-leeeze Ross. SG didn't get famous because Chris is a babe. But
tell me this... why was Chris so intent on showing off his sexy body if he
didn't want any attention for it? If you'll notice, the majority of promo SG

what i actually got out of the death thing, though i didn't make the
point in my original post, was what i get out of a lot of songs that
soundgarden do. and i say do because a lot of the songs they that they
didn't write remind me of this thread as well. anyway, i digress. the
death i see is not true death, as in this guy is dead sitting there,
rotting, but his will, or maybe his ability, to create, is dead. just
like someone said, and i apologize to that peson for not being able to
give them proper credit for their ideas (i just read the post, i gotta
stop drinking) but their point was that the song was about the
frustrations about writing a song. i agree. the person in this song is
frustrated and has given up being creative (it could be any type of
creativity, song writing is just the most obvious and supportable
conclusion here). i didn't see where the point was going about the
"firing my pistol" relating to writing, but that is also a matter of
personal interp. anyway, the point about how we can all see things
differently from the exact same words is a cool point. i just wrote a
paper in my english class about how the use and presence of ambiguity in
texts is what makes literature unique from movies because it allows for
interpretation. music is the same way.

TABITHA: The Kiss tour, with Stone Temple Pilots opening, kicks off June 28th
at Detroit's Tiger Stadium. STP, of course, is not such a surprising choice
to open the Kiss reunion tour -- after all, a few years back the Pilots
played an entire New York City show in full Kiss face-paint. While STP are
unabashed fans, members of two other big bands we spoke with recently, REM
and Soundgarden, had their own views on the idea of a Kiss reunion tour.

CHRIS CORNELL (Soundgarden): If they do a full makeup tour, I think it will
be huge.

BEN SHEPHERD: It really is as predictable as the new twenty dollar bill and
the new 100 dollar bill. You knew that it was going to happen in his
lifetime.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- -
.....A considerably more controversial issue in Washington
right now, one that also affects millions of young people, is the minimum
wage. Opinion polls say that most Americans want it raised; big businesses do
not. Democrats support an increase, while Republicans seem divided on the
issue. While debate rages on, we spoke about the issue recently with
Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell -- who's not exactly working a minimum
wage job, of course, but has clearly given this issue some thought.

CHRIS CORNELL, Soundgarden: You can't expect people to live with, like, a
lower and lower poverty level, and then have these major corporations still
making all this money and being happy about it, having a great life. I mean,
the whole thing will eventually implode or explode, and everybody will
suffer, whether it's a mom and pop store, or a major corporation. If the
whole thing collapses, everybody goes down ship. So you have to concern
yourself with how much the average guy is making. If you're a billionaire,
you have to concern yourself with it. These aren't little ants that will just
go away when you want them to. They're real people, and they have real lives
and families.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ----------------
TABITHA SOREN, MTV News: There's a big minimum wage debate going on in the
country. It's $4.25 right now. The Democrats want to put it up to $5.15 and
the Republicans want to keep it at the rate it is now because they're afraid
people will have to be fired...small businesses will have to fire people to
afford that.

CHRIS CORNELL: I'm surprised it's actually not higher. Mimimum wage doesn't
grow with inflation and that's basically what it should do, no matter what.
The idea to protect small businesses is always a good idea, but it seems like
any sort of wage discussion is going to end up affecting large businesses
more because they make more money.

And the large corporations in this country are making more money than they've
ever made, but the wages seem to be going down. Particularly from a
Republican standpoint, I have trouble believing that they're really too
worried about small businesses. And even if you put all of those small
businesses in one package and add up how much money these businesses generate
and how much they can afford to pay, that's like a drop in the bucket
compared to the major corporations whose interests they're a lot more
concerned with.

And ultimately, it saves the large corporations a lot of money if they drop
it. So, I think it's a really bad idea socially, too. You can't expect
people to live with a lower and lower and lower poverty level. And then have
these major corporations still making all this money and being happy about
it, having a great life.

I mean, the whole thing will eventually implode or explode and everybody
will suffer, whether it's a Mom and Pop store, or a major corporation. And
if the whole thing collapses, everybody goes down with the ship. So you have
to concern yourself with how much the average guy is making. If you're a
billionaire, you have to concern yourself.

These aren't little ants that will just go away when you want them to....real
people that have real lives and families. And the more you ignore them and
the more you consider big business interests at the expense of these
people...it won't make sense fiscally, because the big businesses will run
into trouble later. It makes good business sense to recognize that people
need to earn money. And there's plenty of money to hand.

SOREN: It's takes long-term thinking, though.

CORNELL: That's true. Unless it's a politician that's 80 years old, they're
going to have to deal with what comes around with the economic and social
issues that are going to create a lot of big problems.

ON "CODIFIED" SPEECH: SPEECH WITH INTENDED RACIST OVERTONES

CORNELL: It probably, sadly, doesn't have a negative effect in terms of
people trying to get elected. Because all it is is a sales pitch and, like,
weaving through the gauntlet of issues and, like, coming out on the other
side without without having some serious wounds to your political career is
all they're trying to do. Unfortunately, people that are really good at that
usually get elected.

I think it definitely has a negative effect socially, but then, the end
result is usually that whoever's the best at avoiding these issues is who's
going to end up running the show. The best thing that anybody can do that's
worried about any of those issues is to try to keep them on the forefront as
much as possible. So it's impossible for somebody to constantly dodge these
issues.

Ultimately, it's...people aren't really going to tell the truth. The people
that do, that take a lot of heat -- Farrakhan takes a ton of heat basically
because he says exactly what's on his mind. And I'd respect that more, even
though I don't always agree with it, than I would respect Pat Buchanan.
Because if he said what he was really thinking, I think it would be a lot
worse.

The reason there is an argument about this is that there are no rules
about message content, as long as it deals with Soundgarden. When I
created this list, I believe I took for granted that it was for the
discussion of the band's *music*, not for worshipping Chris as a sex
symbol or discussing what we would do if we found him unconscious in a
field. The majority of the original SOMMS members reflected that, and
the conversation revolved around the music, and that was great.

It wasn't until recently that Shroom jumped in with the always-graphic
conversation about Chris and we wound up with some of these threads
that really contradict what the list was all about in the first place.

Heather, I know you're an original list member (there are only 3
people on the still on this list that posted earlier than you did).
Not many of your posts deal with Soundgarden's music. They didn't then
and they don't now.

Blind Dog is also a SOMMS original, and I know of *nobody* who has
more respect for the band and its music, nobody more familiar with
every intricacy of Soundgarden's songs, and his messages reflect that.
In turn, they also reflect what I had hoped to see when I created the
list which is whay I fully understand why he doesn't appreciate
comments like "I'd just go through Chris' wallet." The FAQ that he and
Little Joe are creating will surely be a masterwork, and will
rightfully become the centerpiece of the unofficial Soundgarden Web
page.

And now we have an argument between you and him, about this silly
unconscious Chris thing. Because you weren't joking when you indicated
that you would rifle through Chris' wallet and cut off a lock of his
hair, or at least didn't seem to be, it comes across as you stating
quite plainly that you would take advantage of someone who Blind Dog
genuinely respects; could you expect him not to defend himself?
Shroom's fantasizing is just that -- fantasizing -- so it's easily
dismissed. Geoff's comment was so obviously a joke that it was in no
way incendiary. But a serious comment like the one you made is
disturbing.

I would definitely like to see more about the music and less about the
other aspects of the band (Chris' chest, Kim's beard (hey, is that
thing real?)), since that's what Soundgarden is about (as they've said
themselves): music.
