I would rather see Chris playing trumpet (because his voice compairs to
that of a trumpet...listen to the vocal braek in Reach Down...Chris
(the highest, wailing Chris) reminds me of the trumpet soloist
standing, and wailing over the others), Kim playing the french horn,
because with those little round glasses of his, he'd look pretty
important, Ben playing the piano, because he just looks like he should
be playing the piano, and Matt playing the xylophone, just because it
would make him look like he was in a high school band. Or Kim could
play the tuba...the tuba player in my band was a hairy guy with a beer
gut.

Subject: Pretty Noose single
From: Ben Timberlake <btimlake@nwu.edu>

I asked both Blockbuster Music and Musicland about a single release. They
said nothing was listed under Soundgarden (they checked both a computer
and a big book). The guy at Musicland said they usually hear about
singles a couple weeks before they come out and that it won't
necessarilly come out before the album. I told my friend who works at BB
Music (I work at video) to tell me the _minute_ he hears something about
the single.
When did the Spoonman single come out relative to Superunknown?

Also:
My best friend Ryan (who goes to school in Kansas) called and left a
message on my answering machine and said, "BEN, LISTEN, IT'S NEW
SOUNDGARDEN!" then he holds the phone to the stereo and I get the middle
of "Pretty Noose." Luckily I had heard it earlier in the day, or I
would've been going nuts!
I play my dub from from the radio to everyone.
My friend Jonna: "It's better than 'Spoonman.'" (She's pretty cynical)
My musical-type friend, Jake: "It sounds like 80s metal with 90s
effects." (he just doesn't understand Soundgarden)

Finally, I'm hoping to get a promo copy of DOTU since I'm reviewing it
for the campus paper's art section. (think I'll be biased? Naaah.)
Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yup, I am positive that down here at the record store (skinny's once again)
that on the board it has. Pretty Noose listed as 29th of May release date.
It also has DOTU release date on the 20th/21st can't remember but Noose is
out on the 29th down here for sure :) Next time I am down there I'll see if
they have any advance copies so we can get b-sides or something. That or

Subject: Re: Spoonman/herion, PN single, etc

Hmmm.... That's interesting....

I disagree that Spoonman was in any way intentionally about heroin use,
although I see how it could be read into. According to clean sources I've
read, Chris C. was pretty into hard-core drugs in earlier times, to
demystify that aspect.

I agree that Spoonman is a religious song. To me it speaks about the
rhythm which represents the most inward, beautiful, and true religion. A
rhythm or vibration is in all things, whether you can see/hear/etc or not
(this is just elementary physics). Is not God in all things? Rhythm is
one of the greatest things: sex, exercise, seasons, sunrise, waves,
music, et cetera.

Listen on!!!!

They've finally made one of those cheesy CD-Books about SG
($8). The book is the height/width of a CD and is meant to
fit in the rack with your music collection. The content is
regurgitated quotes and gushing editorial. If you've got
children/students, etc. you'd like to introduce SG to, this
is the book to do it with. The language is simple and the
pictures are great. The cover of the SG CD-Book is a color
print of 'The Day I Tried To Live' poster. (SG also has a
few pages/pics in the Nirvana book.) Ask your record/book
store if they can order it before writing to the P.O. Box.

Subject: Poor poor SOMMS buyers!!!

Hello all fellow SG fans,

I am reading these stories of people getting SOMMS finally for $20 and $25
and up (with BMF), but I have to say I was at a used CD store, and I
looked up Soundgarden on the little search database they have, and it said

Soundgarden - Into the Void $3.95

I am a big SG fan, and I had heard Stray Cat Blues before, but I never
knew about SOMMS. The listing was for another store, not the store I was
at, so I went to the other store on a different day, and I looked in the
database; there it was, still available at the store I was at. I looked
through the S's, didn't see it, I asked the employee there, she found it
not in the case it came in, in a jewel case with no cover. So I listened
to it right there and I loved it, and bought it for $3.95. I'm glad some
people are finally getting a hold of it and if you want a copy, send a
blank tape to:

Subject: cc's pipes...

hey all...random thoughts for ya...

one of the radio stations around here (the edge in omaha, ne) just
started playing "pretty noose" this weekend. goddamn, it's good to
hear new stuff from the boys. pn is a seriously great song...very
choppy and stop-and-go. there's like five or six completely different
melody lines going on in the song, all of them good. everyone appears
to be in top form, here. matt's percussion is mesmerizing, ben keeps
the groove going, kim takes a trip away from his usual choppy style and
wails with some cleaner, longer tones ala "4th of July" and "Like
Suicide." and chris...

is it just me or does his voice sound better than ever? i was
seriously wondering how his vocals were going to be on this album
based on the throat problems he was having a year ago. i was expecting
more mid-range work, perhaps a few effects to keep him from
straining...but christ! on "pretty noose," (which is sung mostly in
the upper register) he's pushing his pipes to the absolute limit the
entire time. i think it'll be interesting to hear how his tone holds
up throughout DOTU, because (as we all know) he rarely uses the same vocal
style for any particular length of time...he likes to mix it up. hell,
he can't even make it through one song without switching gears and
doing something different. (i.e. "slaves & bulldozers," "searching
wmgec," "4th of July," "black days..." if he sounds as good in the
mid-range and lower registers as he does pushing the envelope on
pretty noose, look out...

how 'bout those sound clips from streamworks? i don't remember which
clip was which song 'cuz i lost the track list that seth printed up
way back when. anywayz...is the second clip "burden in my hand?"
wow...if that little sampling is any indication, i think i may have a
new addition to my "mostest favoritest sg tuneage." i'm running the
clips at 14.4 so it's not crystal clear by any means, but enough to
get the point. i was mr. download boy this weekend...i got updated
copies of quicktime, real audio, streamworks and shockwave and I'VE
NOT YET BEGUN TO LOAD!!! :) my acer is screaming for mercy...but not
as loudly as my arsenal of geetars, which have all been subjected to
ruthless beatings while i try to figure out the music for the clips on
streamworks...i'm workin' on it...i'll keep you posted when i hear
more of the songs, but track #2--whatever it is--is pretty easy if you
use light strings with the right action...it seems like the song can
be played in standard tuning (SHOCK!!!) and if so, it sounds like
there's a bend on an open `a' after "would you lie for me..." yeeowch.
my aching fingers. anyway, i'm drifting off into pompous musician
land, so i'll give it a rest...

well, better split...

later...

Subject: sunday driver

so, i'm driving back to humboldt from a weekend in santa cruz
(celebrating 4-20), and I'm listening to the rock blocks on Live 105.
Now, can someone please explain to me why this happens! I'm screaming
along at 70 mph+ and I hear them announce that Soundgarden will be on
next. And then they go to commercial. Knowing the drive, i know that i
will lose radio integrity right about that hill OVER THERE (somewhere
around San Rafael). And the commercials on. So, I'm slowing down,
because I want to hear the damn song. Dammit. Dammit! And, after the
tedious commercial, and the radio header comes on, I hear: Black Hole
Sun. gag. so, i drive slower still, hoping to buy time until Pretty
Noose. Luckily, it comes on next and I hear it (for the second time, the
first being in a liquor store late the night before). But, it's getting
sketchy reception, because i'm going over the pass... and it's... gone.

so, hey, i probably pissed off the people behind me (going 53 in a 65
zone), but it sounded great. (don't worry, i drove 75 the rest of the
way home, so my time wasn't thrown off)

yay. soundgarden.

I said "just" because Shroom's question implied she would do other,
more carnal things to him, which the Puritans on this list don't want
to hear about. So I would "just" look through the wallet and maybe
cut a lock of hair, not anything else.

you can learn so much about a person from their posts to the

You sure can. Such as this: People get really cranky when they try to

it. But let's not go there...

Maritza I know exactly what you mean. I did mention very similar feelings
awhile back, but nobody responded. I worry too about Soundgarden becoming
more and more popular and thus less and less accessible to their old
fans.

I agree wholeheartedly. After Superunknown came out, I began to feel
almost protective of the band. At times, I find myself hoping that
since Britrock is the "next big thing" people will pay less attention
to the Seattle bands. It's not that I don't want them to be
successful. But with success came these hordes of people who call
themselves fans, but only listen to the music because it's the "in"
thing to do, or they lust after Chris, and don't really care
about the music at all.(This is not to knock Shroom. I know she lusts
after Chris, but she cares about the music as well, which is more than
I can say for a lot of people) As Kim said, "we don't make music for
14 year old girls to diddle themselves to while looking at our
picture." Now, real fans have to compete with these
posers for tickets, and because you have these silly, screaming girls trying
to get backstage who have to be kept out, real fans don't get the
opportunity either.
I just wish we could keep Soundgarden for ourselves.
From what I've read in interviews, Kim would be a great guy just to
sit down and talk to. Back in the day, when they were playing at the
Rainbow Tavern and such places, you probably could. But now, that's unlikely.

Your posting shouldn't have offended anyone's sensibilities. Keep in mind
Cage's own praise for "musicircus" sensibility of rock music:

"...in rock, the traditions are drowned in sound. Everything becomes
confused--it's wonderful! And the performers seem to be all in
agreement...They are alive!" (_For the Birds_ 173).

This seems particularly true of Soundgarden and recent trends in
heavy/grunge rock in which the trajectories of each instrument are
blurred... a rich, intriguing, and (seemingly) chaotic wall of sound that IS
a very Cagean silence. Furthermore, this is music/art presented in a manner
indistinct from life: a garden of sound fecund in a way only Cage could love.

That a list devoted to Cage could be offended by the RANDOM incursions of
its member's individual tastes is ironic. That some members of the list are
to caught up in their own presuppositions about CATEGORIES and other ways of
walling in artistic production and commentary is doubly so.

Thanks for the tip Fleur.

Subject: Sellout?
From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 <bcheyney@cs.strath.ac.uk>

In response to Maritza, Kathie et al I'd have to say I'm thoroughly relieved to
hear they share the same feelings as I do. I know it's selfish as fuck, but I
just don't want SG to get to the stage of Nirvana or Pearl Jam. It's good to be
different, to try to persuade others of the beauty of the music and have them
not listen - if we're all the same it's so fucking BORING! I take pride on
listening to SG since 'Louder Then Love' and the fact that however popular the
band get they just won't sell out! Superunknown was pretty wierd and apart from
'Black Hole Sun' wasn't really that much more commercially viable than BMF.
Like Kim Thayil said, Soundgarden isn't moving towards popular music - popular
music is moving towards Soundgarden.

But it would still fuck me off if Soundgarden started to play huge gigs, with
countless support bands to an audience of screaming teeny boppers - the kind
who moved from Bon Jovi to Nirvana to Offspring - that fucks me off more than
anything else. To have seen SG on the LTL or BMF tour would be a dream come
true - it was just that I live several hundred miles away and oversea (in
the Shetland Isles - most northerly in Britain) from the nearest gig
hall for big bands. It would cost me a fortune and I'm only 18 now - I could
hardly be allowed to go myself at 13 or 14. I just can't see the band top that
era - even the band themselves said they don't enjoy touring so much anymore.

Having said that I can't wait for the new album, I haven't heard the single yet
- - I never listen to radio, too much shit on British radio for my liking - and
I'd kill to see them live for the first time. They better play some older
stuff! I don't know what they still play live, but to hear 'Head Injury',
'Flower', 'Fopp', 'Full On Kev's Mom' and especially 'Loud Love' would do it for
me big time.
I can remember reading a live review where the reviewer complained that SG's
choice of last encore, 'Hands All Over' I think, was too old and 'obscure' for
the audience. Well FUCK HIM!!! If the band were to pander to the 'new' fans
who own just 'Superunknown' then I'd walk out! 'Louder Than Love' is a fucking
GREAT album and should be known to all SG fans.

Thank fuck for SG's integrity. Long may it reign.

Sheesh...

Sorry, I get a bit carried away. Trouble is I LOVE Metallica and they've got
the same problems only on a larger scale!

Cheers

Hello. I'm new to the list, and this is my first post. I just happened
to stumble upon the unofficial SG page, and signed up for the list. So far
it's been very entertaining, and informative. Especially the Shroom girl who
is obsessed with Chris Cornell. She should write a book about the band. I'd
buy it.
I think I was the last person in the world to hear "Pretty Noose", but
it was worth the wait. The new album is going to blow my mind, I can tell
that already. But then again, SG has yet to disappoint me.
I've been a SG fan for about 10 years now, and they have been my
favorite band almost from the start. I've got an amusing little SG incident
I witnessed to share with you. It was back in '87, I believe. SG was
playing one of the countless little dives that I frequented in my youth. I
don't think they were enjoying themselves that much on this particular night.
The crowd wasn't very receptive, and the band was getting razzed a bit.
Chris was very noticeably drunk. I was sitting at a table in the corner
right near what was probably the smallest stage known to man. I had expected
that they would quit the show in the middle, because I'd never seen a band
take that much abuse, and not give up. I think that's one of the things that
impressed me the most about them. Their determination. The crowd was hating
them, but they didn't care. In fact, they played two extra songs, just
because the crowd was giving them such a hard time. I thought it was great!
When they finished the last song, Chris said "Fuck you. Fuck you all very
much." Then he stumbled from the stage and made it to the corner of the bar
that I was sitting in (not ten feet from me) before spraying the floor with
puke. The bassist, Hiro, came over and helped him out of the bar, while the
others packed up their equipment. It was an interesting night. I had no
idea at the time that they would become so famous. I must say, though, there
has never been a band more deserving of it.
Ok, enough rambling. Wait, one last thing. Could whoever is keeping
track of the SOMMS owners on this list add my name to it? Thank you...

that it's focus is more on rhythm than chris' vocals, and that the rhythm

instruments...")

There's a pattern with these hardrockalternawhatsit groups, releasing a
first single which is loud or complex so that they don't alienate their
following and no one screams sell-out. It sure works on me, anyway - if
Black Hole Sun had been the first Superunknown release I would've been
kinda suspicious. Not that I've heard the Pretty Noose yet (hey,
this is New Zealand for Somms sake!) but you lot are giving great
descriptions.

OponFam@aol.com explains her listening strategy:

> > I like to listen to a whole album with
> > headphones first. I have to be alone, and listen with my eyes closed to get
> > the full effect.

Yep, that's my way too. Sometimes I'll deviate for a band like SG who
work so well at filling space (and expanding it and distorting it...),
they're great loud, but I love that personal experience where it fills
your head and you live in that world for a while.

Gregg <melusk2@crow.cybercomm.net> used the phrase "by storm" which is so
true with Sg, it can have a powerful first impact. Crash.
I think the reason I follow Kathie's approach with headphones is,
like her (?), the importance of Chris' lyrics to me, that and The voice.

Carolyn <carolyn.hanel@mtg.for.csiro.au>:

We could do some lazy pop-psychology here and say that those who use
headphones have an introverted relationship with music and that
Jackhammer is into the live culture of music... ghastly
generalization, but in my case somewhat true, there really are personal
first-time-listening rituals. Closing your eyes helps the focus.

That allows you to drown in the song, let me drown....

Whoah. I could totally relate to Maritza's message. I didn't completely agree
with John's reply....Every band wants to make alot of money. Appealing to the
majority is an easy way to do that. Although Kim Thayil said that alternative
was "moving closer to SG", that is not completely true...SG DID get a little
softer, and I fear they will sell out soon...And then SG will lose its
uniqueness. WEll, that's the way it goes. Anybody here like RUSH at all?

Since no one knows really what kind of hell awaits them during

But this dead week will definately steal my mind, and quite

For those actually interested in what you get when you call, it's a
recording that plays four clips from the new record - "Pretty Noose,"
"Burden In My Hand," "Blow Up The Outside World," and "Never Named."
This is a good way to hear them if you're having trouble listening to
the Streamworks clips (they seem to me to be the same 50-second
clips).

Oh wow... what an awesome idea!! Me writing a book!! I need a title!!
Maybe "Shroom's guide to worshipping CC's sexy body." Nah... not witty
enough. I need something that will grab the reader's attention. Anyone have
any suggestions for a title? Heheheh... it's worth a try, anyway. I'll make
an attempt at a first chapter, and then send it out to whoever wants to read
it. I'd post it, but I can't promise it wouldn't be a little graphic.
Heheheh... so if you want a copy... e-mail me in a couple weeks, and I'll
send it to ya. And you get first dibs, Alex...

That was a GROOVY story!! I can't believe you saw Chris puke!! Ummm...
it's totally disgusting, but cool as hell!!

Amen. Preach on brother Alex... oh wise and lucky SG freak... I love
you, man!!

what a shocker you are heather. I can just imagine you umming and
ahhing over chris' unconscious body, scissors in hand, weighing up
whether you should take a lock of his hair as a memento of the day you
rifled through his wallet.

Subject: Yet another "I've heard Pretty Noose!" message

Well, as the subject explains, I have now finally heard "Pretty Noose"
about 3 times. (BTW, if you live the Chicago area, and have not heard it yet,
listen to Rock 103.5 or Q101. They play it a lot.)
I think it's a pretty good song. It really reminds me of TDITTL. The
beat is sorta similar. The chorus "And I don't like what you got me hangin'
from" sorta reminds me of "one more time around".
Besides this song, the only other song from the new album I've heard
is No Attention. The one I've heard is from the Self Pollution broadcast, so
I'm just assuming the album version will sound the same. No Attention totally
kicks ass on Self Pollution. So if this is true, it sounds like we're in for a
bitchin' album! Of course, it's SG, so what else would we expect? ;-)

I called the SG hot line... then some girl asked me for my
three-digit area code.... I told her I wanted to talk with
Chris and she didn't even answer me :) I decided to hang up
before the fone co. would charge me more (1-800 calls cost $5
here in Mexico... about 67 cents US).

Do I really need the area code??? Here in Mexico City the area
code is 5, should I dial 555? Any other Ideas???

I would experiment but my folks would hang me :: Anyway, if somebody
thinks of something just dial 1-800-IM-TOO-SEXY-FOR-MY-LOVE-YES-YES :^)

Y'know... AOL's mail service really blows. I never get my mail on time,
or in the right order. I know, I know... I should quit bitching about it,
and change service providers, already. <sigh>

Damn straight I would do "carnal" things to him!! I really don't think
I need to tell you people that by now. It should be common knowledge. And I
honestly don't care if the "Puritans" want to hear it, or not. But I've been
good with my posts. Well, decent anyway. Nothing really graphic. I've
taken to private e-mail for that. You're welcome, people. I'm so nice...

> So I would "just" look through the wallet and maybe
> cut a lock of hair, not anything else.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. IT'S A HYPOTHETICAL
SITUATION PEOPLE!! Calm down. It's all for fun. Why must some of you
people take everything so damn seriously? Don't worry about it Heather. I
swear... it's impossible to post ANYTHING without someone getting pissy about
it.

>what a shocker you are heather. I can just imagine you umming and

Get off your high horse, Blind Dog. Leave the girl alone. Who are you
to pass judgement on her, anyway? Are you going to save our souls while
you're at it??!? Heheheh... Heather, don't let these people get you down.
If Blind Dog feels it necessary to post his "outrage" over your actions, let
him. But it's only making him look foolish. I'm assuming that most everyone
else on the list is aware that this thread is only in FUN. Some people just
take things WAAAAY too seriously, <ahem> not naming any names or pointing any
fingers.
Don't be afraid to post what you want, people. That's what keeps this
list interesting. Even the posts from the people who are too serious. Ain't
life grand, people??!!??

SA>"Burden In My Hand,"

WOW! I LOVE this one! "I've lost my head again, won't you cry for
me?" It looks like there's gonna be another year of figuring out some
freakin' awesome lyrics (finding out where they came from and why
they're there...stuff like that...I know, I'm nosey).

SA>"Blow Up The Outside World,"

WOW! A slower song! It's freakin' cool! Then it kicks in! Total
ruleage here.

SA>"Never Named."

I heard something about calling me god? Other than that, I don't
rememberm, but I'll have those clips memorized by tomorrow. Good thing
it's an 800 number.

Shroom requested some lyrics, so here are some lyrics. At least what I
got outta them...

Pretty Noose

We all know these now, right? Ok.

Burden in My Hand

I lost my love today
Won't you cry for me?
I lost my head again
Won't you lie for me?
I lost my (?)
Just a burden in my hand
I lost my head again
Won't you cry for me?

Blow Up the Outside World

No one forgive me
(?) pitiful
I know (?)
Give you everything I have
Give you everything I know
(?)
Blow up the outside
Blow up the outside world

Never Named

Dog (it's the first word I hear, anyway)
(?)
You loved me like a god
But I was just a kid
The kind money buys (it's not money buys, but it fits...it sounds like
he says something lies)
I've been down for inside (maybe down on the upside?)
(?)
(?)
I'm getting lonely
(?) pitifully

That's all I know, someone add more, maybe I will later. Damn, they're
making this harder every day.

How true, UnknownMan. I've always loved this about his lyrics, which I think
are usually brilliant. One of my favorite examples of multiple meanings is
Drawing Flies. Even the title could mean alot of different things: is he
"drawing flies", like they're flying around him, or is he drawing flies, like
with a pencil and are they flies, the insect, or flies, the zipper (with the
content of the song it could be either). "Firing the pistol that shoots my
holy pride" could have some interesting meanings too. How 'bout it Shroom?
