It's cool just to listen to it loud and let it take your ears by storm. Then,
maybe when you're on a trip or something, you break out the Walkman/Discman,
and THEN you hear the little details, so you like it even more.
My favorite thing that probably goes unnoticed by a lot of people
has to be when a drummer is doing a fill or playing on the ride symbol, the
*tst* *tst* *tst* *tst* that can be heard from him stepping on the hi-hat
pedal. It becomes an instinct. Listenfor it on JCP especially. You'll know
it when you hear it.

>Do you clear everyone else out of the house for a personal experience or
>gather a group of friends for a communal celebration of SG?

I usually listen to it by myself, and if it gets interrupted, no big deal. I
just go back and try to remember where I left off. Sometimes (if it's the
first disc I get of a certain artist) I'll listen to tracks that are played
on the radio and that I know I like, than gradually ease into the other songs.

>Do you read lyrics first to know what songs are about or let them filter

If I have nothing else to do while listening, I read the lyrics to a song while
that song is playing.

I will probably listen to it while I'm doing my homework, so I'll most
likely end
up listening to the whole thing in one shot.

I hear hate, yeah. Mailman is a perfect example, but I think ugly
truth is about not wanting to deal with something that doesn't feel
good to do, gun is a "the government is full of shit" song, and I have
no idea what 4th of July is about. I also hear a lot of other stuff.
I hear the compassion in "Like Suicide" (not a song about killing your
self, a song about a stork (?) that rammed into one of Cornell's
windows and died), The pain suffered by the narrator in "Mind Riot",
the sympathy for the dying enviroment in "Hands All Over". If you
look deep enough (which doesn't have to be too deep), you could see
that SG's songs are about a lot more than just hate. Gregg >

Of course the two bent-up spoons could just be spoons that Artis fucked up

Hey All-
This is a real pondersome question-How should I listen to this great new
album..
My first thought is to buy the album a week before it comes out on CD. Best reason for this
is because simply our beloved house, which I have lived in since August will be
no more, we have to move out on the 15th!! So, naturally, I HAVE to have
a final bash, which will probably mean grilled steak, shrimp, a LOT of alcohol
and Soundgarden's new one on out turntable. But how do I listen to it?

Do I start listening to Louder Than Love, then Badmotor, then Superunknown..
or do I satisfy my Soundgarden fix by immediately tearing into it?
Only thing that worries me is that with most Soundgarden albums really grew
on me, I'm afraid I'm just going to play this one to death and burn out
on it. On the other hand, all I listened to in 9th grade was 'Louder Than
Love' and 'Blue Sky Mining'-and I STILL love both albums.

Whatever the case, it has to be on vinal, it seems appropriate that I listen
to their new album in a place that has many cool memories, before I have
to move back with my mom until I can get the cashola for a lease and some
furniature in a new studio apartment or a house with a couple of other
cool guys or gals..

Any suggestions will be welcome :)
Peace!
Sean

I called X103 in Indianapolis on Friday night and asked them to play
"Pretty Noose." You were right, Jamie. Matt kicks ass on that song. The
fills coming out of the verses are mighty tough. I went to a frat party
last night. The band was really good. I asked the singer if they knew any
SG, but he said they didn't. However, he put _Ultramega OK_ in the CD
player when the band took a break between their sets. It was really hot
and crowded and everyone was tanked. I'm still sort of woozy. Just
thought I'd share that with you all. :)

Radio Triple J played The Cure's new single and Soundgarden's "Pretty Noose"
on Friday night. "Pretty Noose" is Pretty Damn Good! Jamie, your analogy
of it on Friday was spot on.

The DJ commented that he's heard all of 'Down on the Upside', and that if we
thought 'Superunknown' was good, JUST WAIT until we hear the new album:
we'll love it.

Of course we've all heard all of that already, but I tell you, hearing a new
SG song after so long was enough to get me excited about being able to buy
another SG album soon all over again!! :-)

And I was even lucky enough to scramble quickly to find a blank tape to
record "Pretty Noose" from the radio. Now I can listen to it to my heart's
content, until 21 May......

Cheers!

Everyone,
I would just like to exult once again in the fact that I am a pround owner
of the somms cd. Oh yeah Chicka I hate radio stations too, the local
"alternative rock" station tries to tell me that the fucker from weezer is
a good song writer. I haven't heard pretty noose yet, and I probably
won't. They just want to play that new fucking hootie song, or some
alannis crap. There is one cool DJ that plays some totd and sg but he's
hardly ever there. As for the sg becoming overpalyed thing I seriously
doubt it. Consider this, once the new chili peppers song come out, it was
played on the radio constantly. When the new hootie, song came out it's
being played constantly. Just the way the Tabitha Soren was talking down
to sg on MTV news for making they're album so dark. If anyone else who had
a number one video was coming out with a new album. They would be kissing
they're asses. It's plainly obvious when you think about the fact that we
have to beg djs to play it. We don't have to beg anyone to hear the new
cranberries new song, and superunk was a more popular album.

Subject: a surefire toe-tapper...

I heard pretty noose on the weekend thanks to seth and his
support of the u.s postal system, and it fuckin' rocks. I listened to it
about twenty five times over the weekend, and I am listening to it again
right now :)

the song, to me, is kind of like spoonman (also a first single) in
that it's focus is more on rhythm than chris' vocals, and that the rhythm
is hard to get into on the first listen (even though it kicked ass the
first time around), but it is probably a little slower than spoonman.
there is *so* much going on in the song, with everyone doing such a
fantastic job with their instruments, but still not showing off or ruining
the song itself.

the start is a little like what the hell have I by aic, but moves
away from that sound pretty quickly. there are a lot of toms going on at
the start, and the guitar tone kim has got crushes me. the chorus has ben
playing this riff which gets faster in the second half, which surprises
me, 'cause I didn't know that he could play so fast. maybe it sounds so
good because he is *so* tight with matt's drums :) there are also all
these background vocal parts going around that really add to the huge
fullness of the chorus and the whole song itself.

the instrumental in the middle is cool, with kim doing some wild
stuff, some of which sounds like a guitar dying a horrible death. you can
talk about how billy corgan can layer guitar tracks, but as for self
production and the amount of detail they have put into the guitar for this
song, kim and chris are going to take that crown right of billy's little
bald head. seth was right about matt, in that he goes wild during the
lead break (I just heard a noise in the background that *can't* be a
guitar). he sounds like he is playing all the toms and cymbals
simultaneously, with more than his fair share of arms and hands (not to
mention his killer foot on the bass pedal, which works entirely without
respect to what the rest of his limbs are doing). like I said earlier,
self production has ceratinly not harmed their sound, because in the
middle of kim's lead break, you can hear this excellent <clang> from the
ride cymbal that just cuts through everything.

after the lead break and chorus comes this odd little middle
eight, which knowing soundgarden isn't eight bars at all (and I don't
care what you got...I don't care what you need...I don't want anything),
and it sounds really cool. then the chrous gets another run through, and
then the distortion cuts out and chris is left to sing the half the
chorus through alone. then the song ends with a bit of a buttrock sort of
end, in a way that they don't normally end their songs.

all in all, a great single from what will undoubtably be a great
album :)

Subject: Selfish about Soundgarden

Maritza I know exactly what you mean. I did mention very similar feelings
awhile back, but nobody responded. I worry too about Soundgarden becoming
more and more popular and thus less and less accessible to their old fans.
I"ve been a fan since just after the release of Louder Than Love and have
seen them mostly at smaller venues, which I like because its so intimate and
I think the band is more relaxed. As bands get more popular they're forced
to play arenas and the concerts start to lose something special. I saw it
happen with the Grateful Dead after Touch of Grey. All of a sudden they were
so popular that concerts got so crowded there was more trouble and violence,
which was unheard of before they got popular, and it became impossible to get
anywhere near the band because of the necessary increase in security.
I don't care if its selfish, I want to keep Soundgarden all to myself (and
all you great list members of course). Besides, they hate all the shit that
comes with being super popular and it seems like they've always balked when
they're "on the verge of greatness" (which is what the media has said after
their last several releases, but it never happens). But I'm running on. I'm
glad to hear someone else express these concerns.

About Knights of the Soundtable:
I've been a member of the fanclub for several years now and have found it to
be very inconsistent. I haven't gotten anything from them in a long time,
but I moved and never sent more $ so that may be why. Anyway, I got the
welcome package and then every once in a while would get an update or a post
card, but truthfully I was disappointed and certainly wouldn't send them the
money they're asking for now. I think with Seth's web page and this list we
get all the SG info we need. Just my opinion.
Listening Strategies:
I think this was a great question. I like to listen to a whole album with
headphones first. I have to be alone, and listen with my eyes closed to get
the full effect. Then I listen again while reading the lyrics. Then I
usually study the lyrics some more, with the album playing in the background.
After that I'll pretty much have it down and will generally only have time
to listen while I'm driving. As you can probably tell, lyrics are important
to me and I think Soundgarden has some of the best around. Gotta go.

Hi just had a kind of lame dream of Sg related a couple of nights ago. I
was at some record store and I was looking at Pearl Jam bootlegs. Before
you say 'hey this isn't Sg related', I was looking at the song selection
list on one of the PJ bootlegs and one the songs is a cover of Beyond
the Wheel. So I listened to the cover and it was pretty good but the
song was actually Mood for trouble with Vedder singing of course. And of
course even in my dream state the Sg version was still beter. I think
the SG mailing groups and all their threads of which song is better has
effected my dreams

Look out Soundgardeners, Carolyn is in a chatty mood today.......

I agree with Kathie - whoever raised the question about how you go about
listening to an album for the first time raised an interesting topic. I've
enjoyed reading the responses so far, and I confess I fall somewhere between
Jackhammer (who listens to music first, lyrics last - through the stereo,
loud, while he's doing other work) and Kathie (who places high emphasis on
lyrics - through the headphones, eyes closed, with no interruptions).

Recently I had the chance for my first listen to Kyle Petty, Son of Richard.
It was when "Home Alive" was first released, and the radio station I
listened to announced that they were going to play the SG song from it. I
knew that it would be KP they would play, which I had never heard, so I set
about waiting......waiting....until they played it (2 hours later). I was
home alone late on a Sunday night. For that song, I cranked up the stereo,
lay on my back on the lounge room floor, eyes closed, and just soaked it all
in. I loved it. That's the best way to hear new music, with your eyes
closed (like Kathie suggests), so you can FEEL it as well as just hear it.

Friday night when I heard the radio DJ announce that Pretty Noose was coming
up, I didn't have such luck. I was at another friend's house, and when it
came on I turned up the music, but couldn't do as I did before to soak it
all in because my friend kept talking to me. I had to wait until it came on
again last night to listen to it properly.

When I get the new album (the day I start my new job), I will take the CD
home, and (in my new house in a new town) I will put it in the CD player,
and a blank tape to record it (for my car), turn up the volume, and play the
whole album through. Probably while doing exciting things like cooking tea.
:-( If I have some spare time to not do housework, I will sit down and read
through the CD jacket cover - picking out lyrics I like. After the first
listen I will flip through each song until I find one I like so much I must
hear it the whole way through.

Then the CD will probably get played in amongst the other five CDs (my
stereo has a six-CD stacker) over the next few weeks, and the tape will be
in my car stereo for quite a while.

Someone asked the question whether your favourite albums are those you liked
upon first listen. Other than Rusty Cage (which I liked IMMEDIATELY when I
first played Badmotorfinger), my answer is no. My Soundgarden albums are up
there with my favourites of all time, and for all of them I had to listen to
the album a few times over before falling completely in love with it.......

Oooh boy now I'm getting excited about DOTU.
ROLL ON 21 MAY!!!! :-)

From: UnknMan@aol.com
Subject: Spoonman/herion, PN single, etc

I have a few ideas to discuss.

First off I too believe that Spoonman is about heroin use (among several
other symbols). I was always under the impression that Cornell was an abuser
back in the days... remember how his beloved roommate met his fate? Wood
od.ed on herion, right? Well, Spoonman, being written in / around the
shooting of Singles even makes me believe it's drug usage connotations even
more. This was a time when the kids of Seattle were really hit by Wood's
death.. ok ok ... to the lyrics:

The lines that stick out the most are: "come together with your hands" When
planning to inject needles in veins you must enlarge your veins as to see
them easier. What most people do is wrap surgical rubber around your forearm
(common practice for blood work) to expand the veins but you can also clasp
your hands together (come together w/ you hands) and pump your hands. This
makes your veins bulge out. Also the line "come on while I get off" tends to
give me drug allusions. Not ever having done heroin (or any other form of
'smack') I'm not sure about much else... so I won't comment.

Really to be honest I always had the idea that the song like most Cornell
songs intentionally has several conflicting symbols just to be impossible to
analyze / prove. You can easily see how Spoonman is about a spoon-playing
street artist. (the video 'conjures' this image as well as the spoon solo on
the track) One can possibly see the song as an ode to a superhero. ("save
me" & all that) Spoonman may symbolize a religious figure. The hands coming
together may represent praying & being together with his plan may prove that
Cornell agrees with this religious movement. The 'rhythm' may be the 'good
word.' Wow.. I never thought of that one. Hm... I'm gonna start a new
religion. The spoon is sacred. I'll befriend skeletons and Indians (not
sure if it's meaning Native Americans or Indians though.... I dunno if
Cornell's all that p.c.) (c: Ok.. I'm done with being a dumbass... well for
now atleast.

Also, even if Cornell says he doesn't have 'heroin songs' he does. TOtD's
Times Of Trouble discusses it: 'when the spoon is hot - and the needles
sharp'. Heroin usage right there -points back to the song quote- It's
depicted in a negative way, yet it _is_ depicted...

About the Pretty Noose b-side: My assumption is that radio has the promo
version of the single. I have a few radio promos & they only have one
song... but sometimes 2 versions: the LP cut & the single version. I have
the Spoonman promo which is just like this. Both released before the LP,
only containing the single & album cuts. Other recent examples can be RAtM's
1st single from Evil Empire 'Bulls On Parade' which was sent to my store as a
single track promo nearly a month prior to the album release.

- -break to call local station to request 'Pretty Noose'- I love talking to
the radio morons (c: They know me... & they know I request songs they'll
never play for me which is anything before Superunknown from Soundgarden.
Someday... someday I'll hear 'Flower' or 'Hunted Down' on the radio. Hm...
I'd have to listen to the radio though... never mind.

We should be getting a CD-5 soon for Pretty Noose... my guess is we'll get
the single, another album track & a non LP cut (can anyone say 'Kyle
Petty-Son of Richard'?)... all just speculation of course. I'm basing this
on the Spoonman single. Hehe... anyone wanna guess which LP track will be on
it? My vote is for either 'No Attention' (cuz I've already heard it a
zillion times), 'Ty Cobb' (same reason) or 'Never Named (cuz I'm a wishful
thinker) (c: Maybe they'll toss in one of those groovy instrumentals... or
re-release 'Jerry Garcia's Finger.' Nah... I'm not pesimestic... I just
think like record companies /c:

Ok, so I said alot & it was poorly rehearsed. I always was the type to be
long on words & short on things to say.
