Sommites,
I would just like to announce that I am now a proud owner of the
BMF/SOMMS double cd set. Purchased it for $20 from a kid at my school. I
just advertised on the school network server that I wanted it. I got the
idea because I think that it was nothing man that said that alot of
people have it and don't appreciate it. Anyway thata all for now.
P.S. Shroom I have had sex with Sg on the backround, I had and
ex-girlfriend that liked to listen to I awake, mailman, loud love and the
fobd video version in the backround. Weren't those fun days.

Sommites,
On my second Cd it says for promotional user only. What exactl
does that mean? My bmf cd says disk #1 and the somms cd says disk 2 so I
am 100% sure it is authentic. I am just curious if it is tha radio
station version.

I was wondering if someone could help me. I was at the
Unofficial Soundgarden Page - Images and saw the
Superunknown Icon file. I dowloaded the file with the
'hqx' extension and tried to follow Seth's directions on
how to use it. First of all my computer doesn't seem to
recognize the 'hqx' extension. Also, when I clicked on
File I didn't seem to get the info needed to follow the
directions Seth gave. I am not real good with computers
(I am sure this is obvious) and would appreciate any help.
Please email me direct so as not to clog up the list with
computer directions. While I am at it, I have previously
dowloaded the Badmotorfinger Wallpaper but when I
try to use it it says there is not enough memory allocated
to use it. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Ok, this is what i get for buying somms, huh? My luck has been
reversed. I'm not gonna hear pretty noose until the single is available
in stores (when will that be? I forgot...). The lesser of evils as far
as radio stations go here, is still hooked on alanis and hootie. Tbere's
only one time there's a chance they'll play pretty noose, and that's on
Sunday night. I'll be listening, but probably in vain because they
absolutely suck. That station admitted the fact when they played "Santa
Monica" for the first time, and that "first time" was at least one month
after my winter vacation, during which time, the modern rock station at
home, 96X had Santa Monica in regular rotation. I hate the radio
stations around here. I want to start my own dammit. But i have no clue
as to how. I'd even have a weekly soundgarden show. From what i hear,
pretty noose kicks major ass, and i NEED TO HEAR IT. Dammit!!! -j

I was listening to the radio (after you spend an evening listening in
vain for Pretty Noose, it becomes habit) and Spoonman came on, so I kept
it on. Then Pretty Noose came on, and the DJ says "You know what this
means, it's a double block from Soundgarden, and be the tenth caller for
Soundgarden's back catalog." I almost died on the spot. And then he
comes on AFTER Pretty Noose is over and he says "It's a Soundgarden
weekend here at The Edge, so whenever you hear a double dose of
Soundgarden, be the tenth caller for Soundgarden's back catalog." I
lost my fucking head! SOUNDGARDEN WEEKEND? WHY THE HELL AREN'T I
NOTIFIED ABOUT THESE THINGS? Well anyway, I'll be sure to not move away
from the radio all weekend, cause a Soundgarden weekend is too damn good
to miss.

I'm sitting here listening to 'Pretty Noose' (recorded it off the radio)
and comparing the lyrics foreshocks sent me (thanx) with my own....I love
the song a lot but I also think I've been satiated from a new SG song so
I might love it more than expected but it's SG so of course it's
great.... My condolences to those who do not have it yet....:( Anyhow the
reason for this post is out of personal concern,
maybe some will think selfishness but I don't mean it like that. I'm
concerned that SG will become super popular after the new cd comes out.
All the cheesy radio stations we are capping on for only playing Hootie
will be playing hootie then Sg...radioplay will hype up the album I'm
sure, however I'm not sure I would like Sg to become as 'commercial'as say
pearl jam or how nirvana was...It's already hard to follow Sg and I'
m happy with Sg being somewhat private - I'm not sure private is the
right word but I'm sure someone out there knows what I mean. I think
that the radioplay might make SG's music "trendy" and not really
appreciate their work...same for radio listeners. I guess I'm scared
that I'll be at a concert someday with all these people who really don't
know anything about SG other than Superunknown & DOTU (I would
scream....Can't handle that) ...but I then go on
to think that maybe this new album would get people to want to listen to
previous cd's and really appreciate the music as I do...I'm sure this
thread has come around before (maybe before Superunknown???) but it was
on my mind. Am I being selfish or stupid...??

I don't know what it is about radio stations in my area but you'd
think they all have specific orders not to play anything "loud". And here,
on this page I keep hearing about all these radio stations playing stuff
from the new album (thanx, I adore being tortured). There's Q-92 up here
that claims to play all the best in rock from heavy to light, have they
ever played anything from Soundgarden? NOPE! I wonder if they can be sued
for false advertising? I'm just dying to hear the new songs and I'll bet

Ok, so I got my welcome package from SGKOTS. So I am now an official
Knight of the Soundtable. The package includes: a superunknown keychain
(very similar to the one available in stores - good thing I didn't get one)
A soundgarden pick - autograph scrawled on one side -I think it is Chris
A very glossy photo of the band - very nice. I don't think I have seen
it before
A welcome letter
A 'faq' which contains mostly the same info from the official website
A Soundgarden history called "Soundgarden then, now, and forever"
Different from the one on Seth's website.
...And...A VERY THOROUGH, as far as I can tell, discography
And that's it. No fireworks or cd's or anything. No gift certificates
redeemable for one free dinner at Chris' house.
In the next few days/weeks I'll try to forward all of the info to Seth in
some form.
Now, you want to know was it worth it?? That's a tough question to
answer. It cost me $23 canadian to join. That's $15US converted to
Canadian + money order. So it's hard to say. I son't know what I will
receive besides. The contents of this package are probably not worth
that much...but I AM A KNIGHT OF THE SOUNDTABLE!!
Anyway I will try to get as much info to the list/website as possible in
the next few days/weeks. There is some stuff in here that I'm sure some
of you will get a kick out of as I did. Peace,
						-Geoff

Ok, take it easy there, I think they are saying that because it is to be
released on vinyl one week prior to May 21, which is - quick math
21-7=14. Yes, May 14. I asked a clerk at the local HMV, and he said

Subject: Listening Strategies

How are you going to listen to the new album when it arrives? Don't
slap it on, whatever the conditions: the first listening
experience is important and shades all following hearings, so I want
advice on tactics (maps, how you'll deploy the toy soldiers....).

Do you think Soundgarden works best loud and filling the room, or with
headphones to hear all the details?

Do you clear everyone else out of the house for a personal experience or
gather a group of friends for a communal celebration of SG?

Do you read lyrics first to know what songs are about or let them filter
through along with the music?

Since the album will have lots of tracks and be long, will you listen to
it the entire way through or break it up (into 'record sides')?

Ideally I go with whole albums to hear things in context - it's like there's
something sacred about track-order - but when there are lots of new songs
I get swamped and can't pick out individual tunes and after several
listens can only go "I like the one where the drums go daddadada-dada"
or "the one about [fluffy rabbits or whatever]". And that means that I'm
disappointed for the first few listens as it is all too much and
overwhelms me and that taints my feelings for the record even after it
has grown on me.

Are growing-on-you albums always the best or are your favourite albums
and musicians ones that/who affect you immediately?

Karen

After watching BasketBall Diaries today with it's vivid herion use

Does anyone out there agree with me that spoonman has Heroin use
overtones in it. The song has some support in it and the cd single case
does have two bent spoons in the inside cover. And didn't Chris do heroin
as a kid?

Subject: "Pretty Noose" lyrics
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

I requested any new Soundgarden song *except* "Pretty Noose" today, so
of course the DJ played PN anyway. When the song came on, I switched
to mono mode, so it cut out the background noise (and much of the
guitar) and made the vocals much clearer.

For the first time, I heard "fall out and take the pain" as "fall out
and take the bait" -- quite clearly. "Bait" makes much more sense in
light of the explanation of a pretty noose as "an attractively
packaged bad idea."

I heard "the one mistake, this thing has got me on" as "the wooden
stake, this thing has got me on" -- what do you think?

Also, I'm still trying to figure out the beginning of the second
chorus:

_____ rope, silver chain
Pretty noose is pretty pain

I think the first word might be "velvet" -- anyone else have any
ideas?

Other way round, Geoff :> - we're about 13-18 hours (depending which coast
you and the Aussie counterpart are on - or not on!) AHEAD of you guys ie.
when it's 5:00pm, May 20th in Brisbane, Australia (and the Brisbanites have
their copies of Down on the Upside and the record stores are just closing),
you'll be in bed (maybe?) at 2:00am May 20th, still at least 22 hours from
getting your copy...

Australians are lucky in that we're just on the right side of the
International Date Line! :>

I know where you're coming from and it's a common feeling, the feeling of
something being for a more select group rather than the masses...but I think
from the opposite direction. Soundgarden DESERVE popularity, so much more
than many bands/artists out there selling multi-platinum albums, and I would
be proud to think that Soundgarden's popularity is increasing. At least if
they do become super popular, you can have a grin to yourself and know that
you weren't hopping on a bandwagon...

I'm not going to start worrying until Soundgarden deliberately become more
commercial and start to try to attract more people by "toning down" their
music or by appearing on Oprah Winfrey. There's no doubt that with
Superunknown, the greater population began to follow Soundgarden a little
bit more and they were more accepted - even my parents know Black Hole Sun.
Kim Thayil explained this perfectly in an interview I read in a guitar
magazine, stating that Soundgarden hadn't changed themselves to increase
their popularity, that in fact the popular music scene just happened to be
moving closer and closer to the music that is Soundgarden.

By the same token, the increase in popularity makes it that bit more
difficult to get good tickets (or tickets at all) to their gigs, but that's
just something you have to grin and bear, or try queuing for 3 nights before
tickets go on sale!

All opinions welcome...

First listening? If it's like most other albums I get, I'll buy it and it
won't hit the CD player for a couple of hours, maybe even days...I'm a
slacker like that. But the first listen to me isn't that important - all of
the albums I regard as my favourites weren't particularly enjoyed with the
first listen, more like an "yeah, it's okay" response to that first
taste...with persistence, they grow on me.

>Do you think Soundgarden works best loud and filling the room, or with
>headphones to hear all the details?

Leave the headphones off for a first listening - you shouldn't be looking
for detail in your first listen to an album, more of a general feel. I'll
turn it on and I'll be doing work at the same time, so I'm deliberately
avoiding the details. You'll pick up the subtle nuances in good time...

>Do you read lyrics first to know what songs are about or let them filter
>through along with the music?

It's just me, but lyrics are the last thing I notice in a song, and usually
not until many listens to the song...rhythm followed by harmonies/chord
progressions and THEN lyrics are what I notice.

>Since the album will have lots of tracks and be long, will you listen to
>it the entire way through or break it up (into 'record sides')?

Whole way through - otherwise I fall into the trap of only ever listening to
the "A-side" as I do with quite a few of my cassettes...

>Are growing-on-you albums always the best or are your favourite albums
>and musicians ones that/who affect you immediately?

With albums, as a general rule, they will grow on me. I may love an album on
first listen but it will take a few listens to establish itself as a
favourite. With singles it's the exact opposite - a favourite single will be
loved on first listen, and this is without exception. I can't explain it...

I seriously doubt it =) People think The Day I Tried To Live is a
heroin song, and Rolling Stone asked Chris about it, and he said "I
don't have any heroin songs." Also, I don't think he did heroin as a
kid.. he did stuff like mushrooms and pot, I don't think he got into the
really nasty (well, my opinion anyway) stuff. I don't know, just
rambling =)

I see this as either:
Tie the rope, seal the chain

or (more likely)
Diamond rope, silver chain

I just had a thought as to why everyone's attempts to get
stations to play soundgarden songs other than PN (Pretty Noose)
have been in vain: Most stations probably just have the Pretty Noose
single. I would doubt that that many stations, especically in smaller
markets, actually have advance copies of DoTu. Well, there's four more
days (I think) 'till the PN single gets released. I wonder what the
B-Sides are.....
