Subject: News...

Well, as I heard that there was a clip on SG on the MTV News, I jetted
over to the MTV AOL section, and copied the interview they had. Oh, and BTW
I've added my own personal comments where I felt it necessary. And notice
please that MTV sucks SO bad that they can't even spell Ben's last name
correctly. It reads:
- -------------------------------
Hi, I'm Kurt Loder with MTV News. *(Dork...)

More than two years after blowing up major-big with its "Super-Unknown"
album, Soundgarden returns to the racks next month with a new one, recorded
at the Seattle home studio of Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard. Tabitha
Soren visited the band on the set of a video shoot last weekend and filed
this report. *(Was it just me, or was she being a bitch to Chris and Kim
when she interviewed them after the '94 MTV Music Awards?)

TABITHA SOREN, MTV News: Soundgarden named themselves after this pipe
sculpture here at Seattle's Sand Point back in 1984. Over the past 12 years
the first local act to attract major label interest here has had platinum
records, a Grammy award, and their last album even debuted at number one. So
of course Seattle's dour sons were worried that main stream exposure might
dilute the intensity of their music, all evidence to the contrary on their
latest "Down On the Upside."

MTV: The first video for "Down On the Upside" is for a song with an unlikely
title: "Pretty Noose".

SOREN: How are you approaching this video differently from others you've
made?

KIM THAYIL, Guitar: Well, the director is a graphic artist who's been a
poster artist that we've liked for a number of years, Frank Kosick.

MTV: Soundgarden has consistently experimented with different video styles
and directors, and by now quickly know if a director and an idea are gonna
work out

CHRIS CORNELL: It's pretty obvious if you're talking on the phone with the
director and he starts talking about wanting the band shirtless with lipstick
then, you know, OK, wrong guy. We'll get someone else. *(Ummm... I
disagree, myself. I think that sounds like a GREAT idea... Y'know, I should
become a video director...)

SOREN: Can you tell me about the song apart from the video. What is a pretty
noose?

CORNELL: It's just sort of an attractively packaged bad idea, pretty much,
something that seems great at first and then comes back to bite you. *(Kinda
like bad acid, take-out sushi, and my last boyfriend.)

MTV: As it turns out, Ben Shephard had real first hand noose experience.
*(These people are idiots... S-H-E-P-H-E-R-D.)

SOREN: As a kid you sat around tying nooses? I mean, I don't know if that's
a common thing.

BEN SHEPHARD, bass: Yeah you practice... you take a string... and we also had
a sailor's book at home and we used to sit around and try and tie a whole
bunch of different knots.

SOREN: That's not quite as morbid somehow.

CORNELL: What are you saying, you didn't hang little nooses around your
Barbie and hang her from a light shade? *(Heheheh... guilty here...)

MTV: With "Down on the Upside" carrying songs like 'Pretty Noose', 'Zero
Chance" and "Blow Up the Outside World" it'd be easy to assume that the
album's pretty dark. And you'd be right.

THAYIL: It's a little bit sad, it's a little creepy. What's new? *(God, I
can't WAIT to get my hands on the CD.)

MTV: Chris Cornell offers a different perspective from those who see nothing
but doom in the band's music.

CORNELL: If you write a song about feeling bad in a particular way and then
someone hears that song and they think, "Wow, I really identify with the way
he felt when he wrote this so there's someone else out there who feels like
me, I'm not the only one." What happens? They feel better, so even if it's
a dark theme, it can actually have a positive effect. *(Ummm... if he
really cares about cheering up SOME of his fans, he can start by taking off
his shirt more often. Heheheh... )

KURT: Soundgarden. The "Pretty Noose" single will be out on April 23rd. "Down
On The Upside," the album, will follow on May 21st. Soundgarden will also be
joining the Ramones and Metallica on this summer's "Lollapalooza" tour, which
kicks off in June.
- ------------------------------
Well, that's it. Nothing really new. Just thought y'all might wanna
read it. You're welcome, and stuff. <kisskiss>

imusic is an internet music site, thepeople who do the 'official' [snort]
SG web site.

from what i understand, it's going to be an *internet* broadcast. you
will need to download a compatible player to be able to hear the
broadcast. imusic uses Streamworks, which is kind of like RealAudio (tho
sounds just as sucky).

this will cut out the AOL'ers ability to listen. (sorry, shroom!)

you can download the player in advance from www.imusic.com. i'd recommend
doing it now to avoid the rush and so you can get it configured in time...

After finding out how hard it is to get now, I'd have to say the SOMMS disc.
I also have a little packet of info that was sent to me by SG's publicist
(promo stuff, pictures, decals, etc.) that is special to me too because at
that time I was trying everything in my power to get an interview with the
band at one of their Chicago concerts ( 1992) and the publicist actually
tried to set something up for me, but it was too last minute. During this
couple of days of talking back and forth with this guy I felt really close to
the band, and it felt pretty cool to know that he was actually talking to
their manager, who was talking to them, etc, about something for me. So when
I look at the stuff in the packet I think of how close I came to actually
meeting my heroes. Unfortunately, the more popular they get, the less likely
this could ever happen again, which makes it even more special. Thats
enough, gotta go.

I haven't been getting any more orders, and besides, it's past the
deadline. Sorry I'm taking so long, I've been pretty busy lately. I'm
getting the definate prices for shipping today. I just compaired the
prices I already got (which weren't exact anyway), and the prices Toni
got for me, and some of them are pretty far off. Others are similar,
so it looks like it's gonna be about $3 shipping for the US (free
envelopes, and fast shipping), and about $2.50 for Mexico and Canada.
And if you didn't see earlier, the shirts will be $8. Now I just have
to figure up how much envelopes will cost (for those that aren't free),
and all that other extra stuff. Should be just a few cents a piece,
though.

How would you know this? I believe the musical challenges were really
different back then. LZ set the stage for the bands that followed to
take time changes to a different level. Progression. Today's bands are
building on what LZ and other bands put in motion. You've got to be
kidding if you don't think JPJ, JB, & JP could handle odd time changes.

>They're both great bands, but (imho) SGis technically superior.

As for technical superiority, imho, you've got to look at the generation
difference in the music. They are playing different kinds of music!!!
If I had to compare, I'd have to do it by individual.

I'd take:

Cornell over Plant - They can both have alot of soul, and can both scream
the skin directly from your back, but Cornell has a greater range and a
more natural and powerful voice.

Bonham over Cameron - More power, fuller sound. They way he and JPJ
were soooo, tight and together...driving the bassline.

JPJ = Shepard - Haven't really decided yet. I think it's funny how
different they are in their performance. Ben is all over the place, JPJ
just kinda stands still and just goes off. Technically, they are both
fab., with JPJ being neater in is execution.

Page OVER Thayil - Now many of you probably won't agree with me on this,
but I just don't see the big deal with Thayil. He's not doing anything new
and innovative. His writing is okay. His performance is nothing to write
home about. I just got Motorvision, and was shocked to see that Chris
started Rusty Cage. All this time of was giving Kim the benefit, by
saying "well, he does fuck it up in Rusty Cage". No, he just adds a bit
more to it. In LZ, Page was experimental, going out on a limb, playing
rock, country, blues, and generally pushing the bounds of guitar sound.
Kim does not compare.

What's your opinion? Be analytical not emotional!!

Subject: SHIRT ORDERING FOR IDOTS (by idiots)

I got the info on the shirts. They will cost $8.00 (everything is in
american money, because that's all I know). Postage for the shirts
will be as follows (these are just for ONE shirt):

USA: $3.30 this includes an envelope, and it should be pretty fast
Canada: $2.50*
Mexico: $2.70*
England and the rest of Europe: $5.00*
Australia: $6.30*
South Africa: $5.80*
Korea: $6.30*

*include $1.30 for envelope

OUTSIDE THE US NEEDS TO ADD$1.30 FOR ENVELOPE! (just making sure)

So, if you are from the US, and you ordered two shirts, you need to
send $16 for the shirts, and $6.60 for the postage.

If you are from England, and you ordered two shirts, you send $16.00
for the two shirts, and $10 for the postage, and $2.60 for the
envelopes.

That was just an example, so get the prices from above, and put them in
their respective places, and add them up.

Then, put the money in an envelope, and send the envelope to:

Nothingman
104 RC Lane
Friendsville, MD 21531

I put Nothingman instead of my real name so I know it's for the shirts,
just incase you wondered.

SO, send the money NOW so I can have the shirts made as soon as
possible. I know everybody's waited long enough.

The next message from me is the all the orders I have. Look at them,
find your name, and make sure it's right. If it's not, tell me AS SOON
AS POSSIBLE (which means right when you find a mistake). I cut and
pasted, so it should be all right.

If you have any questions, ask me NOW, so we can get this thing done.
And if your country isn't on my postage list, tell me NOW so I can find
out. I just skimmed over the orders and found the unique ones.

From: Ross Filipek <rfilipek@indiana.edu>
Subject: Re: Sound Zeppelin

I know. Comparing SG and LZ is like comparing apples and oranges. LZ was
the first band to play rock/blues with *power*. Since power is the
foundation of rock music today, one can argue that LZ has been an
influence on every rock band with a powerful sound. That influence can be
direct (like Aerosmith) or indirect (like SG). I'm not saying that every
rock band starts out with the goal to sound like LZ, but the LZ influence
is there regardless. Otherwise the groups of today might sound more like
Bill Haley and the Comets. :) My point was that SG is better at writing
odd time signatures than LZ was simply because that's the kind of music
SG *writes*. It's not that LZ *couldn't* write odd times, it's that they
*didn't*. LZ made a conscious decision to write songs in 4/4 and not
11/8. This doesn't make them any better or worse of a band, it's just a
reflection of what was popular at the time. The feel of LZ's songs could
*never* be duplicated by another band, including SG. But at the same time,
the feel of SG's odd times couldn't be duplicated by LZ because of the
individuals in the band. Here's my take:

Cornell over Plant--For the same reasons you listed.

Bonham vs Cameron--These two can't be compared. I've been playing drums
for the last 10 years and have studied Bonham's work very closely. He's
without question my favorite drummer, but his style and Cameron's style
are very distant. Bonham's playing is all about power and brute force.
No fancy stuff here. His goal was to just dig the shit out of everything,
and it sounds *incredible*. If Bonzo was the king of power, Cameron is
the king of finesse. He doesn't hit as hard as John, but he makes up for
it by putting lots of grace notes and syncopated rhythms in the drum
parts. They're both masters of their trade; they just play with different
styles.

Jones over Shepherd--I just think JPJ is more of a musician than Ben. I
like them both, but JPJ is a great pianist and orchestral arranger as
well. Ben's got a much cooler image, but I really think JPJ is a better
bass player.

Page vs Thayil--Two totally different styles. I don't know enough about
guitar to make a conscious decision on this one.

The Beatles, LZ and SG are the greatest rock bands in history. All we can
really say about them is that they each played different styles of music,
but each band played *very* well. And each have definitely left a mark of
influence on every new rock band today. I'm done now. :)

I'm sure we could argue this for days, but I'm *positive* that it's
*not* an Internet broadcast. Having people call in questions would be
pretty silly if it were a Net broadcast. It also wouldn't be done by
satellite if it were on the Net. The info came from iMusic's Daily
News section, which has nothing to do with events that iMusic itself
is hosting -- it's just a bunch of articles that they gather from the
news each day.

How did you decide it would be a Net event?

Streamworks software. I checked them out (they were on the Radio
Nowhere server, "Streams 2" for ISDN and 28.8k connections, "Streams
3" for 14.4k and 9.6k connections) and though the quality isn't the
best (compression will do that), it's good to finally hear new music.

The available songs are as follows:

1. Pretty Noose
2. Burden In My Hand
3. Blow Up The Outside World
4. ??
5. ??

As you can see, I couldn't figure out what titles went with the last
two tracks. If anyone has any idea, let me know!

as an Australian sports show, Sports Tonight, cut to an add break. A few
weeks back, I heard Superunknown on an American show just arrived in
Australia called Extreme...

Anyone else been hearing their songs in weird places?

new album in the background.. they played a lil bit of never named.. and
EVERYTHING i heard in the background sounded GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hehe :> There was something I heard in the background that sounded
kinda like Hater/Head Downish kinda stuff, but I don't think it was
Hater or Head Down,I think it was a new track. God, I can't wait....

I think the strangest place I ever heard Soundgarden was in my Comp II
english class. I was living in Austin at the time, and my professor made us
fill out these "get to know you" sheets. We had to answer the usual stupid
questions, plus "If you were in the hospital, who would you want in the bed
next to you?" Well, of course I put down Chris Cornell... but I had thought
that the prof had meant in the SAME bed, lying next to me. So the next time
we had class, she had us read our answers out loud to the class. Some chic
said "I would want my grandfather in the bed next to me, because he's dead
now, and I didn't get to know him as well as I would have liked to." I
looked at her, and said "I thought I was sick and twisted... jeez girl... you
have PROBLEMS." Then, of course, everyone jumps all over ME, because I'm
telling this girl she's weird 'cuz she misses her grandfather... and then
they explained it all to me. Ummm... oops!! My mistake!! Suddenly I'm the
class clown. So I told everyone why I would want Chris in the bed "next" to
me, and I kept going on and on and on about Soundgarden's music. The prof
was so impressed by my babbling, she brought a portable boom box to our next
class and played some Soundgarden... while we were taking a TEST!! She
played it loud, too!! I couldn't believe it!! Awesome!! A quick question
for all you school people... do you do the same thing I do? In EVERY paper I
write, I find SOME way to incorporate Soundgarden into it. Sometimes I throw
in song lyrics... sometimes I name characters after the guys... and when
they're really open with our topics, I write about Chris' sexy body.
Heheheh... that's been REAL popular with some of my profs. I guarantee...
in every course I take... everyone in that class will leave with a decent
amount of SG knowledge. Even the people who hate them. Obsessions are weird
things to have.
Ummm... the second weirdest SG music thingy I've experienced was when I
was shopping at the mall in Gadzook's, or something. They always have music
videos playing, and I think some dance song was on when I got in there. I
ignored it... until the next song came on... "Black Hole Sun"!! So I plopped
myself down in the middle of the floor, right in front of a monitor, and
refused to move until it was over, even though I've seen the video thiry
million times, and I'm sick to death of it. And what song did they play
NEXT? New Kids On The Block. Is that insulting, or what? It was
disgusting. I complained to the manager, but I think he was pissed at me for
blocking one of his aisles for like four minutes. <sigh> I never win.
Ummm... one more thing... Nothingman, you know I love you... and I can't
thank you enough for taking care of our shirts for us, 'cuz you're doing an
excellent job... but if you post my parents address ONE more time, I'm going
to kill you. <kisskiss>
                                                  Shroom
Time for musician jokes...
- - A guitar player walks into his rehearsal room to find his drummer and bass
player fighting. He breaks the fight up and asks the bass player why they
were fighting. The bass player tells him that the drummer had de-tuned one
of his bass strings. The singer says "That's no reason to fight", and the
bass
player says "Yes it is, he won't tell me which string it was."
     Heheheh...

My prized possession would be The Rocket (magazine) with Soundgarden on the
cover from 1988. :o) It was the first magazine that they were on the cover
of. It's not anything special but I love it.

Ok, if someone writes a check to me, and I cash it, and it bounces...am
I the one to get blamed? That would suck.

Outshined was played at the end of Sand Blast on MTV once. Minus the
vocals, though.

This one's a doozy.. lemme think :> How about in a Turismo? No, no..
Hmmm.. there was the time my German teacher never showed up and I
started playing HIV Baby on this cheesy tape player.. or the time my dad
was singing Rusty Cage.. or the time I was at school for an exam, and I
had my Superunknown tape, and I was listening to Black Hole Sun, and I
noticed that this car was blasting it, and my tape and the car's radio
(tuned to z-rock) were playing the song at the exact same time (I mean
EXACT, SYNCHRONIZED). It was cool.. :>

The strangest place I ever heard Soundgarden was while I was getting an
MRI. An mri is a type of brain scan which uses a massive magnet and
radio waves to get detailed images of the soft tissues of the body. I
had volunteered as a subject in an experiment. I was told to bring a CD
to listen to during the preliminary scans which take up to a half hour.
I listened to the first half of Superunknown. So I guess you could say I
listened to SG in the field of one of the strongest magnets approved for
human use.
