For all you Canadians:

Today on Much West Terry David Mulligan was down in Seattle interviewing
Chris Cornell himself. Unfortunately the interview is to be played at a
later date.
The upside is (no pun intended) that Terry show a cassette with the title
Down on the Upside. I got chills just seeing it. The cover inside the
plastic case was just a white piece of paper. Perhaps this is the
prerelease for radio stations and the like. Anyhow, just thought I would
pass along this info.

P.S. THe Cream of Wheat guy would cream the Quaker guy (pun intended).

any canucks on the list see this? wonder where they taped the interview,
so i can kill myself for spending the day sitting in the sun at discovery
park (very funny, we're walking along the cliffs where they shot the TOTD
video with the picnic cooler and my friend chris starts singing the chorus
to 'hunger strike'. it was very funny. ;) )

anyway, if you saw this,t ell us what the album cover looked like.

today....because they're doing an interview with soundgarden. and
they're happily flashing around a copy of the tape..."Down on the

put in whole...

re: peter cornell, in answre to the *many* queries i have had, the dude is
quite broad in the shoulders, but my friend chris, who can give you
measurements down to the millimeter just by looking at something, claims
taht PC is only about 6" tall.

what's always been funny to me is how fair the cornell sisters and PC are
as compared to chris. my friend linda personally espouses the 'milkman'

the votes have all come in for my ill conceived and poorly
populated vote on our favourite songs from the pre-bmf era soundgarden,
and the results are obvious (to me anyway) in some cases and a little
surprising in others. surprising to me was that neither hunted down nor
gun scored any votes at all. but perhaps the funniest one I got (and the
one that typecasts it's sender), was carolyn voting for big dumb sex (now
we know you're just in with the rest of them hootchies carol!).

anyhow, to the votes. there were quite a few songs that received
only one or two votes, and only a couple that really streaked ahead. the
one that lead the pack was....beyond the wheel. a close second was hands
all over, followed by loud love and a personal favourite by the name of
little joe. the rest were as follows: hand of god, I awake, flower,
uncovered, no wrong no right, full on kevin's mom, ugly truth, big dumb
sex, nothing to say, circle of power and fopp.

so now in a horrible follow up, I'm going to try and collate our
favourite songs from the last two records. I am sure that we are all a
little more familiar with the material from badmotorfinger and
superunknown, so I should get a passel load more replies to this one.
please limit your voting to *one* song from the two albums together, and
please send the reply directly to me, otherwise the list just gets
polluted with stuff other people don't want to read and that doesn't mean
anything anyway.

Big Joe has a point with people parading around in the latest in the
hip section being rather
disingenous. I mean these people criticize others and consider themselves
superior because everyone else is not on the same enlightened level of
grungeness as they are. Now grungeness, if I may use the word, is
ostensibly a reactionary movement to upper class and middle class lifestyle.
When, however<comma> you examine the vast majority of grunge listeners, and
who the music
is in fact being marketed to (point goes to Bu Shi Bai Ren), it is this
same group of people.

But to characterize them as hypocrites and poseurs, is a bit rough I
think. People are hypocrites on a regular basis. We live as hypocrites. We
have to. Is it acceptable? No, not for those who know. For those who
realize the hypocrisy, it behooves us to fight it. But for those who do
not realize, they should not be criticized for their ignorance. In this
case, as in most cases, ignorance is a damn good excuse. And for those
who know and can't find the strength to change, can we really fault them
for being weak? The most challenging thing for someone to do is not to
enforce inaction but to compel action. Can we expect people to be better
than they are? We have no right to do so. We only have the responsibility
to muster up the strength in ourselves and change.

Hey everyone! Happy easter!! Or Happy Passover!!
I'm sure by now everyone has the release date on the new album."Down the
upside," just incase you don't it's May 21!!! And SNL is on May 18th the host
will be Jim Carey!! That will be the hardest thing to get tickets to! If
anyone has any ideas on how to get them, please let me know!!
Also, if anyone knows when the tickets to Lolla go on sale I would greatly
appreciate the dates!

So, anyone out there ever see the Foo Fighters in concert? I did on Sat. night
what an amazing show! The opening bands were That Dog, not half bad, The Amps,
wow they suck!! I can't believe that they opened for them!! The Foo Fighters
were full of energy and the sound was great! They (musically) were so tight I
think they sounded better live than on their CD! Well, that is just my
opinion! What's yours?

Subject: Pretty Noose
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

I got a tape of "Pretty Noose" thanks to Eric, and I've been listening
to it and trying to work out the lyrics and such. It's in 4/4, but
it's not always in even numbers of phrase groups (like the first
chorus, which repeats 3 times). I agree with Foreshocks in that
rhythmically it reminds me of Nirvana's "In Bloom" -- at one point it
even quotes that song (melodically) almost exactly.

There is a guitar solo after the second chorus, and Kim and Matt go
berserk.

I've tried working out some more of the lyrics, but I'm afraid I
didn't do a very good job.

I got the motor _____
Pick it up and throw it away, all right
I got the perfect stand (?)
Clean it up with a dirty feel, all right
Fall out and take the pain
Eat the fruit and kiss the snake goodnight

_____ _____, dirty face
Pretty noose is pretty hate

And I don't like what you got me hanging from (3x)

Letting your motor race
Pick it up and get this mother gone
I've fallen far away
The one mistake, this thing has got me on

_____ rope, silver chain
Pretty noose is pretty pain

And I don't like what you got me hanging from (4x)

[Kim and Matt go crazy]

_____ _____, dirty face
Pretty noose is pretty hate

And I don't care what you got
I don't care what you need
I don't want anything

And I don't like what you got me hanging from (6x)

Oh, Eddie Vedder is in Soundgarden? Interesting. I hadn't heard that.
I would think that questions about Mr. Vedder might be more
appropriate for, say, the Pearl Jam mailing list?

Let's keep it SG-related, people. No more Quaker Oats threads.

expecting some of the magic that was always accompanying Nirvana... but it
was just the Foo Fighters. Damn good music, but I 'spose I just had my

Fair... as in real life, or in pictures? I'd imagine Chris has alot of

of Ultramega and LTL, he wasn't exactly a bronze god. God yes... tanned no.

It's a cross between Krokus and Nirvana....there's a combination :-) Its
recorded like Blind Dogs. A very raw feel to it. The guitar solo in the
middle "feels" like the guitar and drum combination in Kyle Petty, but it's
sped up. I can picture the video already (though I'm thinking deserts and
video scenes reminiscent of Judas Priest's "Turbo Lover" :-) Who remembers
that vid? Kozik (sp) will do a great job...lot's of imagery for him to
play with...

This song isnt "soul music" like previous SG songs. ("No Attention" for
example) But it seems aimed for maximum market saturation. It's not as pop
as "Big Dumb Sex". Which I think is the most pop influenced song SG has
ever released...but it's OK...It will grow on me...I know it :-) Here's my
take on Seth's lyrics....

Pretty Noose

I got the mode to die
Pick it up and throw it away, all right
I got the perfect stand
Clean it up with a dirty feel, all right
Fall out and take the pain
Eat the fruit and kiss the snake goodnight

Throwing ropes, dirty face
Pretty noose is pretty hate

And I don't like what you got me hanging from (3x)

Letting your motor race
Pick it up and get this mother gone
I've fallen far away
The one mistake, this thing has got me on

Throwing ropes, silver chain
Pretty noose is pretty pain

And I don't like what you got me hanging from (4x)

Throwing ropes, dirty face
Pretty noose is pretty hate

And I don't care what you got
I don't care what you need
I don't want anything

And I don't like what you got me hanging from (6x)

So I ran to Toshiba WWW site and found out the following (in digest).
"Old XM-5302B doesn't support CD+, but new XM-5302B supports it.
And the old '5302 can not be made to run CD+" -How frustrating!
They didn't even change the model name, just adding confusion

  My point is,

Hello kiddies... and welcome to another episode of... "Will Shroom say
lascivious things about Chris Cornell's sexy body?" Your hostess today will
be... me. Yeppers... it's Shroom, again. <boo...hiss...> Today we will be
discussing an interesting topic brought up by your friend and mine...
UnKnMan!! <applause>
Actually, Ray and I were talking on AOL last night, and he mentioned
that he was trying to put a date on Chris Cornell's twisted fork. That got
me thinking... which is kinda scary and sometimes it hurts... but I don't
know exactly when the fork put in an appearance. I have a poster from
"Peavey" that has Chris, Ben, and Kim on it... and he's got the fork then.
And yes, the long hair was present. Does anyone have any idea of when the
fork became a part of SG-land? I'm guessing sometime right after the filming
of "Singles", but just before Lolla '92. Speaking of Singles... <sigh> I
watched it again today for like the 13 millionth time... and I still can't
decide if Chris is drunk or just really stoned when he walks down the stairs
to stand next to "Cliff". I almost got kicked out of the damn theatre when I
first saw the movie. Almost got kicked out the second and fifth time too,
for that matter. Does this sound familiar to some of y'all? "OHMYGAWD!!!
IT'S CHRIS!! IT'S CHRIS!! IT'S CHRISSSSS!!! LOOOOK!!! AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!"
And during the SG performance part "LOOOOK!!! IT'S CHRIIIISSSSS!!! HE'S
HALF-NAKED!!!! AAUUUGGGHHH!!!!" Yah!! That was me!! I got pelted with
popcorn and milk-duds by most of the audience. Ouch. Milk-duds hurt. I
wanna know how come they didn't show us Ben's face during the performance
clip. Is he really THAT shy? And why am I writing all this? I think I had
another purpose of this post. Oh yah... the fork. Ummm... wait... I
finished talking about that already. Next subject...
A few of y'all expressed interest in getting on AOL to talk Soundgarden.
How'z about this Wednesday night at say... 8pm CST? For you stupid people,
that's 8pm central standard time. I know... alot of you people get on the
IRC... but us pathetic AOLers can't get on an IRC channel. So shoot us.
Anyway... we AOLers can meet in a private room called (now here's a shocker)
"SOUNDGARDEN". If any of y'all don't know what the hell I'm talking about,
and want in... just e-mail me and I'll lead ya through it. You're oh-so
welcome. <kisskiss>
                                  Shroom
"Damn, but that Shroom girl is one sexy babe!!" ~ Chris Cornell
Ummm... ok, so maybe he didn't say EXACTLY that... but I'm absolutely
positive he's uttered every single one of those words before in his life.
I'm just piecing it together for him. I'm so nice. Heheheh...

It's mostly the same as Steve's version, but I changed a couple of
lines. The one "I've fallen far away" makes a lot more sense thaN "out
from in far away" but it sounds like he's saying the latter to me (is
that right?). It sounds more like he's saying "pretty, hey" than
"pretty hate", but I don't know, pretty hate sounds more like a
Soundgarden lyric. I just realised something.. pretty hate.. pretty
hate machine.. Hmmm. :> I should make a wav file of that Sister
Machine Gun song that they sample Rusty Cage in. Ok, I'll get out of
your hair now..

At the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum this past holiday
weekend, I overheard an actual conversation that nearly
caused me to wet myself laughing. A mother and her
approximately 12 year old son were watching the TV in the
Seattle display case. One of the video snippets was a live
clip of a long-haired, bare chested, no facial haired Chris,
singing, "Remember, I love you, love you." The moniker
'Soundgarden' appeared at the bottom of the screen as the
clip ran. Kim, Matt & Hiro were never shown.

     The conversation was as follows:

     Kid (doubtful tone and expression):
     "Nooo. That's not Soundgarden."

     Mother (confused and maternally concerned):
     "What?"

     Kid (annoyed with the clip):
     "That's NOT Soundgarden."

     Mother (more confused):
     "Why?"

Kid (frustrated, speaks slowly and sarcastically):
     "That...WAS NOT...Soundgarden. Chris Cornell...DOES NOT
     ...have...long...hair."

OP>I suppose they are valid.

Even more valid straight-from-Chris'-mouth things. This one is from
the interview in the October 94 issue of Request.

Interviewer: Many of your songs, including "Black Hole Sun" and
"Fourth of July," trade in dark, apocalyptic imagery. Does any of that
flair for the dramatic come from your having grown up Catholic?

Chris Cornell: "Yeah, I'm sure some of it does, but you wouldn't catch
it in an entire song. Like "Jesus Christ Pose" people think is an
angery religious reference, but it doesn't have a thing to do with
that. That song was based entirely on seeing rock stars like Parrey
Farrell or some top model doing these photo shoots where they were the
Christ figure with this stupid ass crown of thorns and their arms out.
It became fashionable to be that sort of persicuted-deity guy. It
started to get annoying that people were trying to associate themselves
with that, because they don't even know what it is, other than a symbol
that a whole bunch of weak people deify."

Is deify a word? I dunno. Maybe it was a typo, but it kinda looks
like deicide.

Subject: Jesus Christ Posing Models

I got a nasty personal Email from a list member today in response to my
comment that Jesus Christ Pose had something to do with fashion models. When
I read my post I realized, boy this sounds dumb, so I decided to find my
sources and post those. Since they come straight from Chris Cornell's mouth
I suppose they are valid.
First, I have a video tape of Chris and Kim on Headbangers Ball in 1992.
Rikki Rachtman asks Chris to explain JCP the way he had in another
interview:
Rikki:"You told why you made the song about people always using the
crucifix..."
Chris: "Yeah, mostly like fashion models, but sometimes rock stars. You know
where you see like the centerfolds where they're kind of laid out like this"
(he sprawls on the back of the couch with his arms stretched out)"Christ
figure, persecuted mostly by being in a higher tax bracket I guess. But
yeah, it just got kind of irritating."
Then I have this article from Rock Beat magazine from March 1992 that says:
The first single from Badmotorfinger is a Black Sabbath-y epic entitled
"Jesus Christ Pose". "It isn't anti or pro-religious," explains Chris
emphatically. "The cross is such a widely seen symbol that it's exploited in
so many ways, from fashion models to rock stars, satanists to neo-Nazis.
It's exploited more than any other symbol. The lyrics of the song are
actually speaking out against that and are expressing being irritated by
that. It has nothing to do with how I feel about Christianity or any other
religion that uses or bears the symbol. If anything, it comes to the defense
of the situations where it seems like it's being exploited for no particular
purpose."
So, for all those who take their lyrics so seriously, there it is.
