Subject: MTV 120 sucky minutes special...

Ok peoples... I just checked the MTV part of AOL, and they listed the
videos they were gonna play during the special. No mention of Soundgarden.
Of course, one of the first videos they talk about is "Smells like Teen
Spirit". Now there's a shocker, huh? As if there's a person alive who
hasn't already seen that video thirty million times. Here's a list of the
videos that will be played:

Part of 120 Minutes "The Decade in Videos"
Airs: 3/31 @ 2pm, 5:30pm and 12midnight (ET/PT)

1.The Cure/Just Like Heaven
2. Nirvana/Smells Like Teen Spirit
3. Jane's Addiction/Been Caught Stealin'
4. R.E.M./The One I Love
5. Live/Operation Spirit
6. Green Day/Longview
7. Smashing Pumpkins/Siva
8. The Smiths/How Soon Is Now
9. PJ Harvey/Down By The Water
10. Depeche Mode/Personal Jesus
11. Offspring/Self-Esteem
12. New Order/Two Face
13. Midnight Oil/Beds Are Burning
14. Hole/Doll Parts
15. Love and Rockets/So Alive
16. Red Hot Chili Peppers/Knock Me Down
17. Pixies/Here Comes Your Man
18. Beastie Boys/So What'cha Want?

"120 MINUTES: THE DECADE IN VIDEO"

The Red Hot Chili Peppers host this two-hour video collection of some of the
biggest and most important alternative artists who have appeared on the
series from 1986 through the present. Videos featured include: Nirvana,
"Smells Like Teen Spirit," R.E.M., "The One I :Love," Green Day "Longview,"
Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Knock Me Down," Depeche Mode,
"Personal Jesus," Beastie Boys, "So What'cha Want," New Order, "True Faith,"
and the Pixies "Here Comes Your Man."

And to think I e-mailed them like thirty million times to play "Flower".
Those sorry bastards. <sigh> Of course, there's still a chance they may
play SG, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I like Drawing Flies too. Matt Cameron wrote the music but Chris Cornell
wrote the lyrics, which I love. I have to think long and hard about what one
song I'd want to hear if I could only listen to one.

I've been thinking about something lately. Everyone is excited about the new
album and everything, and of course I am too, but does anyone else feel kind
of possessive of Soundgarden and their music. I've been obsessed with them
for almost 7 years now. We started out seeing them when they were touring
with a bunch of thrash bands and Danzig. I love seeing them in smaller
venues because the music sounds better and the feeling is so much more
intimate. But I've liked other bands who started out small and then got big
and it really felt kind of alienating because they then had to play the
crowded arena shows and just all of a sudden seemed so far away. I don't
want that to happen with Soundgarden. I know that's selfish because they
deserve all the fame they want, but does anyone else fear getting lost in the
shuffle if they get really popular. I mean, we've stuck by them through
thick and thin and I really feel protective and possessive. Any thoughts?

woodstock II could form a pit to Orlean's cheese 70's song "You're still the

It's cool the Trees have been invited. I cant wait to hear the new album
which should be released soon.

NO! Toronto or WNY date! Looks like I'm seeing the state of Ohio more
closely than I wanted. Maybe, just maybe the TBA July 11 date?

Good luck getting into the official site. You'd better have a fast computer

If you dont...you wont get in. But, you can go throught the back door on a

I was under the impression that Black Hole Sun was played to death over
there.. We have the same thing in this country, except instead of rap, we
have Britpop :( Plus we only get a serious music show once a week for half
an hour (or maybe one hour) the sad fact is that what gets played is what
makes money, not what will make interesting listening :(

Wait a sec, I was under the impression that Footsteps was on the original
Demo that Eddie put together for Pearl Jam, since it's part of his trilogy,
meaning that Footsteps preceeds Times of Trouble. This aside, I cannot
believe this story since it doesn't make sense for Eddie to feel jealous of
anything other members of the band do, least of all when it happens before
Pearl Jam was even born. Anyway, that's my piece said... Thanks for your time.

One time I blasted BTW up here at school... people started slamming their
doors, and the ones that did walk by gave me odd stares. I loved it!
Maybe I'll play "Half" for everyone today... :)

Hey, Shroomie, You mean me?? I was reading over this height debate and
saw you asked where I was. What can I do for ya??

The height thing? Well, I've never been next to Eddie Vedder, and
don't care to be. I've been told he and McCready are both around 5'5"
or 5'6". He's a short little shit, in other words.

CC is tall...I'll take a guess here based on a few observations I was
able to make last summer. CC was backstage at a rahter important
Inflatable Soule show. My guess is that brother Peter is a solid 6'
b/c he's a little taller than my best friend who's about 5'11". Seeing
CC with Peter, CC was maybe 2 inches taller...not a whole lot taller.
Yeah, who was it that told me that fool Rikki Rachtman was a short shit
too...maybe Jeff Gilbert....had to be, b/c he was at that MTV thing
where they taped Sg bowling and we were cutting up Rikki the idiot at
one time. Is that any help? And for anyone who cares...it's the
Cornell boys who got the height--the girls are around 5'1" to 5'4"!!

I was going to do this like Tuesday or Wednesday but since I'm posting
today I'll just do it now--I'm off to Europe from April 4 until April
15. It's a school sponsored trip and no, I am not acting as a
chaperone! Anyway, I'll be out of email contact from about 10 a.m.
eastern time on Thursday until the morning of 4/15. Email me now if
you do anyway or if you have anything to say, otherwise, I'll just
catch y'all on the flipside. I sure as heck will miss the list.
Seth's going to put me on digest temporarily so I'm not overloaded. 4
days in Seattle and I had 222 messages waiting for me! Eeeek!

So.....that's all for now. Rememer, new IS Cd due on 4/20. There is a
show at MOE that night, but Peter doesn't ewant to call it a release
party--he's saving that for their first major label release. That's
from him, not me. Anyway, check them out at:

email the Soulies at soulefc@aol.com!

see y'all later! deb

i do that too.. it seems like people in my dorm are always loud.. so, to
shut them up, i get louder... And with my roomies Bose 301s, and Onkyo
tuner, it's not real hard.. some of my fav tunes to crank:

"Crawl Away" - TOOL
"Slaves and Bulldozers" from "digging the garden" bootleg
"Jesus Christ Pose"
"Big Dumb Sex" for obvious reasons
"sunflower" by Paw

for the first time this morning, i downloaded "665" backwards and laughed
my ass off... then I gazed at my official Soundgarden fan club poster and
looked at Chris' smirk... how appopriate i thought..

to tell the truth, beyond the wheel doesn't do much for me. cc's singing
is quite uncontrolled, and back then his screaming wasn't quite as
masculine as it is now (it sounds a bit more like that noise you get when
you stretch the end of a full balloon). not until he sings it in the
middle register does the song sound like something. up until then i am no
more afraid of my cd player than i am when i listen to sabbath. and as far
as vicious opening licks go, i can think of other garden songs that blow it
out of the water. for instance, room a thousand years wide. most of the
other songs on ultramega have been growing on me, especially mood for
trouble.

ok, in a sorry attempt to get out of doing any sort of uni work
whatsoever, I'm going to try setting up a poll.

with the new album coming out and all of us getting fairly
excited, I thought it would be interesting to get everyone's opinion on
what *older* songs they like. and to make it more interesting (I hope),
I'll only except songs that are on soundgarden's first three albums:
namely screaming life/fopp, ultramega ok and louder than love.

post me privately (not to the list, otherwise everyone including
myself will get shitty), and give me the title of the song you most like
from the above albums. if I get some sort of significant response, then
I'll post the outcome to the list.

Ok, first off, I didn't find this on AOL. I heard it from my friend
Ezra today when I was visiting him up at CD Warehouse, where he works. He
said that during the last Dallas date, SG were up on stage playing... and
some guy threw ice at Ben and pegged him in the face or eye or something. I
must have totally missed this. Of course, if you put Chris Cornell in front
of me, he's the ONLY thing I'm going to see. Anyway... Ezra (who plays bass,
which is why he noticed this) said that Ben kept pointing to the guy who
pegged him, and the security guards grabbed the guy and drug him forward.
Then they held him so that Ben could kick him in the head. The guy went
down, and Ben went back to playing. Now, usually I wouldn't believe
something like that unless I saw it with my own eyes... but Ezra's a friend,
and a pretty cool person. Plus he's in a local band that's getting kinda
popular, so he knows what it's like to have malicious gossip spread about
him. He wouldn't lie.
I know I'm going to get flamed like hell for posting this... but
y'know... I really couldn't care less. I'm just sharing what little SG info
I can get my hands on. You're welcome!! <kisskiss>

I'm not sure that anyone was trying to say that it was the best
opening riff that soundgarden have recorded, but that it is one of the
best. it's probably got to be as good as room, and maybe better than
fourth of july (am I slitting my throat here joe?). the start is better
and has more depth when they play it now, I'll grant you, but the original
is nothing to scoff at.

PE>most of the other songs on ultramega have been growing on me, especially

Ultramega Ok was one of those albums that I buy, listen to (I mean
fast-forwarding to the beginning of each song to see if it catches my
ear), and then put away. But last year, I got it out again, and
listened to it, and it's been one of the most played tapes while
driving. Temple of the Dog is probably the most played, but that's not
the point. The point is, it took a long time to get used to it, even
though I didn't listen to it long. By that I mean, I listened to TONS
of other Soundgarden stuff, but I hardly ever listened to Ultramega OK.
But when I decided I'd give it another chance, I loved it. Not
because it was better than the other Soundgarden, but because it was
different. You see, I was expecting it to be like their other albums.
But it's more bluesy, and less refined, and even a bit darker, in some
aspects. But Mood for Trouble was one that grabbed me, because of the
acoustic at the beginning, and then it turns into Chris screaming for
his life, or something to that effect. The other song that grabbed me
was All Your Lies. It's the chorus that I love. I'm not sure why I
love it, but I think it's the way it flows. Anyway, it's just great.

How about Baddoggieshittingonthefloorfinger? That'd be too hard to

he'd much rather be in a Room a Thousand Years Wide. You better get it
fixed so it doesn't have Big Dumb Sex, or wake up the neighbors with

you might have a mess. But don't punish him too bad when he bites the

collar so he doesn't feel Outshined by the Cold Bitch next door (the
one he's having Big Dumb Sex with). Keep him outta the road so he
doesn't cause a Limo Wreck, in which case you'd have to Kick(stand) his

Thanks, Grote. And Blind Dog, and Jackhammer, and Glenn (who told me what
he thought this was some time ago before I asked the list). Yes, the
"wakka-wakka" sound is what I mean.

Okay, seems the muting, and/or the muffling strings, is what gives the sound
I like. Jackhammer told me that what I hear in "Uncovered" is actually
muffled strings, and that what I hear in RATM's "Bombtrack" is called
muting. Harmonics, I'm not so sure of. Is this another technique

Harmonics, Carolyn, and anyone else who cares, are a completely different
technique. I won't bother with explaining the technique, but it produces a
sustaining, almost piano or keyboard-like tone on a guitar.

Sorry, that's a shitty description. :)> But you can hear good
examples in the verse riff of "Limo Wreck", just before Chris starts
singing, in the main riff of Mad Season's "I Don't Know Anything",
AIC's "Rotten Apple" (there are harmonics everywhere, and I've seldom
seen them used better), and the intro to Metallica's "Welcome Home
(Sanitarium)".

Hope I could help, Carolyn.. listen to a couple or all of these songs,
and see if you can figure them out. ;)>

Take care,
Glenn

personally, my favorite older song is "I Awake".. even though the lyrics
were scribbled down by Kate, Chris creates a mood that is unequaled by
any other singer out there now. And the crunchy guitar riff helps add
pain to the song... just my thoughts.
