OK, so it seems like everybody are listening
to music they like. :)
Well I can't always listen to what I want.
(Not at work anyway.)
Cos we are five guys sharing one stereo and
you all should hear the arguments when deciding
what to listen to.

Here is my I_have_to_listen_to_it_even_thou_it_sucks
list:

1. Michel Jackson Dangerous
2. Joe Satriani every fucking album
3. Infinite Mass(rap group)

I could make this list *very* long but I wont.
Can you blame me for mailing crap-mail like this
when listening to MJ? ;)

I would much rather listen to SG, even if I only
could listen to one song all the time.
And if that was the case I guess I would chose
Rusy Cage. It's so fucking good and Kim's playing
is exellent.
What song would you pick?

That's a great idea. There's only one problem (for me) - IRC, much like
Talker, is as addictive as hell, and that's why I use e-mail. I've been on
Talker and IRC for many hours at a time, unable to wrench myself from the
keyboard...very dangerous indeed!

But that doesn't stop anyone with a bit of self control from using it (or
even those who don't mind the long hours with no self control!) !

>With the IRC in place, this list could become a place to discuss
>soundgardens MUSIC.

I hope the list wouldn't COMPLETELY lose the personal chit chat RELATED to
Soundgarden - it would spoil it for the non-IRC users (like myself) and if
it was strictly music, the number of posts would go way down - how many
strictly music posts do we get now? There could be some days where there
would be virtually no posts...and as has been stated so many times, there's
only so much analysis of the music and questions about the technical side
that people can take before things go stale...

But don't let my ramblings put you off - IRC would be a great idea.

It's Abbruzesse...
Anyway, I think that's part of what makes Vitalogy so damn good- the
fact that it's definitely "out there" for PJ.
And yes, Footsteps blows the doors of off the SG version. Eddie just
sinks so much more of himself, his emotion, the lyrics into that song
than CC could. (Go ahead and flame if you will...)
The KIDS soundtrack rocks...but the movie is easily, collosally better!!

Actually, the rest of the group asked Dave Abruzzese to leave because he
wanted to "shine" above the rest of the group, and that's not what PJ
wanted from their guitarist. They wanted someone to blend with PJ, not
to "stand out" so much.
Anyway, my non-SG related $.02 worth.

absolutely. this is why i get so fucking pissed off when someone i don't
even KNOW tells me that i am 'less' of a fan of x band than they are because
i dare to say i don't like a song, or an album, or that a show was imnsho
substandard. bite me.

as johnny thunders used to say, 'rock and roll is simply an attitude. you
don't have to play the greatest guitar.' and that quote pretty much defined
the whole essence of punk rock, and have we forgotten that punk rock is one
of sg's primary influences?!

as to dave abbruzzese: no one, repeat, NO ONE, knows what happened between
him and pj *besides* him, pj and their manager. i don't care who is a
friend of a friend of the cousin of the soundman of the bus driver... i'm
not a huge jack irons fan, but if you listen to some of the brand-new (and i
do mean "brand new", i mean stuff done in concert that isn't anywhere
official yet) he is fitting in more and more.

and anyone says that pj is losing their hard edge again hasn't hear the new
stuff. it totally rocks. :)

IRC is very easy to use. All you have to do is get an IRC program. The
best one out is called mIRC which is shareware, there is a list of
servers where you can get this program at:

http://www-2.nijenrode.nl/software/mirc/get.html

Once you get an IRC program (or if you already have one), connect to an
Undernet server and join the channel #somms, I should be there most of
this evening waiting to test this out. Its that easy. I have e-mailed
an Undernet rep and asked how one would go about registering an IRC
channel, so far I haven't recieved a reply, but it can still be done if
the channel is registered or not - its only for security purposes. See
you on #somms.

Seth, if you would rather not have us use #somms as the name, by all
means tell us and we can change it to something like #sg or
#soundgarden.

all forget it and move on, ok? So, here's what i have new:
My top 5 reasons i don't want the new album to come out: (this is a joke)
1. I will have to spend $15 on May 21.
2. I will not be able to talk to the list on May 21, cuz i'll be hours
away from an internet connection.
3. I will have to spend $18 for the tab book for the new album as soon
as i see it in Camelot.
4. I will have to take a week off from work to fully ingest the new album.
5. Soundgarden might sellout on this record (THIS IS A JOKE!)

Well, anyone else wanna contribute?

CAROLYN- (i think it was carloyn, anyway...or whoever was asking about
the cool guitar sounds in `uncovered')

i've seen a few replies from people suggesting that you're talking
about harmonics, but i don't think that's what you mean. (an example
of harmonics would be the piano-type sounds beginning at :11 of limo
wreck)

i just listened to `uncovered' and i'll assume that you're referring
to the choppy "wakka-wakka" sounds that kim plays a few times before
each melody riff. (at about :11 and :20 of uncovered, and elsewhere
throughout the song) This technique is known as MUTING, and it simply
involves striking the guitar strings normally while the fingering hand
is resting on the strings (NOT HOLDING THEM DOWN AGAINST THE
FRETBOARD), causing a short, choppy sound.

i hope this is what you were looking for. for other examples of
muting, check out `possum kingdom' by the toadies, the main riff of
nirvana's `teen spirit', and numerous other tunes. (oh yeah...the
shotgun-type sound before the chorus on radiohead's `creep' is also
muting, done with massive amounts of distortion) i'm trying to think
of fairly common examples that occur in albums many of us probably
have, but that's all i have time to list now...

THE PAST: Enrique (who taped SG's rare 1st video, Flower,
off of MTV Latino), kindly sent the following description.

     It's a b/w video that begins with a woman's hand plucking
petals off an orchid? played backwards to look like she's
sticking them on the flower, followed by a woman in black
running between gravestones. Then SG walking (not in the
graveyard). When the guitar riff starts, SG are playing
live. The camera moves like crazy - images are not clear.
When Chris starts singing, the camera concentrates on him.
The shots are from crowd level (the camera moves with the
crowd). The live shots are b/w and some yellowish. Then
the band wandering (a close up of each member distorted like
it was taken through glass). The woman running in the
graveyard (blurred as the camera runs behind her), SG live,
the woman leaning on a gravestone, and SG live again. The
video ends with a dog barking behind a barbed wire fence.
     ------------------------------------------------------------
THE PRESENT: To all those who feel "This has become a limp
mailing list!" I'd like to say, "Be patient." So we've run
     out of inspired commentary...TEMPORARILY.
     ------------------------------------------------------------
     THE NEAR FUTURE:
SG will perform on Saturday Night Live (May 18). The new
album will be released (May 21). They are confirmed for
Lollapalooza (Summer). And finally, SG will headline a
     small venue tour (Fall).

You think your mailboxes are full now? 450 listmembers -
hah! I say we grow to 750 by midsummer. In the meantime,
order a T-shirt, disregard the chain letters...be happy.

The notion is that weddings bring out the best in people. Unless, of

From: dwy2@po.cwru.edu (Bu Shi Bai Ren)
Subject: SG/PJ

First off, this goes out to James B. Hawken:

Eddie Vedder was born in Chicago, experiencing childhood
difficulties (he has said his stepdad beat him) with his parents. His real
father was in a wheelchair, suffering from MS. At the time, however, he was
told that the man was a "family friend". So what he thought was his dad was
his stepdad. However, his mom didn't tell him the truth until after his
real dad died. Obviously, Eddie wasn't too happy, so he took off to San
Diego where he lived in a shack on the beach. He would pump gas all day, go
to his shack, and surf all night. He was involved in a variety of bands
(one of them was Bad Radio, with Rage ATM's drummer). His buddy Jack Irons
(formerly of the Chili Peppers and Eleven, now with PJ) gave him the demo
tape of Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard. Eddie went surfing that night, then
taped himself singing over the demo. He also wrote "Mamasan"-a mini rock
opera consisting of Alive, Once, and Footsteps. The songs Alive and Release
are about his real dad. Once and Footsteps are part of a fictional story
that supposedly takes place after Alive; kind of a "What could have happened
to Eddie". Better Man (the first song Eddie ever wrote) from Vitalogy is
about how his stepdad abused his mom. Anyway, he sent the demo back, Jeff
listened to it twice, called Stone and said: "You better get over here."
The rest, as they say, is history.

Ok, now on the discussion of PJ's drummer: Dave Krusen left after
the recording of Ten because he was in the middle of a divorce, among other
things. Supposedly, Dave Abbruzzese was booted because of creative
differences (whatever that means). Two of the major disputes were:
1)Dave Vs. Eddie; Supposedly, everyone in PJ got into a big fight
over the cover of Vs. Eventually, everyone except Dave agreed on a
particular cover. They decided to take a couple weeks off to cool down.
The first day back, however, Dave brought up the cover issue again. This
royally pissed off the band, especially Eddie.
2)Dave Vs. PJ; PJ admitted that they wanted Vitalogy to be a slower
type of record. I guess this meant that the emphasis was on developing the
mature sound of the band as a whole. So much for the anguished fury of Ten.
As you may have noticed, Dave is a faster, more aggressive drummer, while
Jack Irons is slower and emphasizes intricate rhythm more. In my opinion,
Jack sucks compared to Dave A.

Well, PJ booted Dave. Dave Grohl of Nirvana/Foo Fighters filled in
for only a couple concerts. PJ got Jack Irons to quit Eleven and join them.
Kind of ironic: Jack was the one who introduced Eddie to Jeff and Stone.
Eddie and Stone have said that with the addition of Jack, PJ has come "full
circle". I guess that's supposed to make us feel better about PJ having a
sucky drummer. Oh well.

Sorry about my PJ rantings. I know a lot of you think that Eddie is
an immature crybaby. I can see where you would get that. However, I must
defend Eddie, just because he's one of my favorite singers ever. Yes, his
famous bouts of depression, etc. deprive "real fans" of his music. However,
most of his beliefs are those of the band's (ie., their refusal to do videos
after Ten). I think it's noble (yes, I know-cheesy) of him to pull out all
the stops to protect the fans, even when it doesn't turn out right.
Secondly, if I was him, I'd wig out too. There are all these pousers out
there who claim PJ/SG/Nirvana for their own. What's up? Get real, people.
You were all Gap wearing preppies laughing at the people you now hang
posters of on your wall. Eddie said that people who beat him up in school
are now asking him for autographs, and it makes him sick. I'm sick of
people buying Doc Martens/flannel/etc. cuz it's cool. Be original for once
in your pathetic LL Bean lives.
So think how Eddie feels: These Gappy little punks are in sense dirtying
your songs. I mean, these are song about your life and feelings. Eddie's
song are intensely personal. I don't know- maybe I'm too extreme, but it
makes me sick. I'd freak out too (this is NOT FOR YOU!). Thirdly, give the
guy a break. He was just another crusty kid at a SG show. Two months
later, he's working on Temple O'Doggy with Chris and Matt. I'd have
problems adjusting too. At least he's not a coward like Kurt Ka-Boom--Oops!
(I meant Cobain). How people can admire a twit who leaves his wife and
child alone for his own selfish reasons is beyond me. Yes, he wrote great
music and lyrics. But as a person, he was a coward. At least Eddie (and
Chris!) are brave enough to face their problems without using shotguns.
Ok, I will quit trying to convert you to be on Eddie's side.

SG: Has anyone heard stuff from the new album? You could hear most
of Vitalogy from the "New Songs" boot off of the Vs. tour. I wonder if SG
has a similar boot.

Sorry so much PJ info. I just really like them. Fortunately, SG doesn't
seem to be embroiled in so much controversy.

*Fun Fact: Calvin Klein tried to get Eddie to be an underwear model like

this message have some relevance, Eddie was born in Evanston, Illinois (sp?)
which is known mostly as a college town (Northwestern) and it is a

Hmmm... that was a great letter! Congrads on having the nads to write
it. But oh man... you are going to get FLAMED. Isn't controversy grand?
But then again... we just got over a flame war, and everyone's kinda tired
of it, so maybe they'll let this one go by.
I agree completely with your assessment of some of the SG fans. Going
to the concerts during the last tour almost turned my stomach. I've never
seen so many bowheads gathered into one place. My friend Mike decided to do
an informal poll of the SG "fans", and out of twenty people, only seven could
correctly name ALL of SG's albums. To give them some credit, most of them
DID know that Superunknown wasn't their first album. Heheheh... quite a few
of them thought BMF was the first. Speaking of bowheads... <sigh> you should
have seen the women's bathrooms. There was such a huge cloud of hairspray,
if someone would have lit a match... I think the whole place would have gone
up in flames. It was a nightmare. I didn't know you could bring hairspray
into concert arenas. Shows how much attention I pay to that stuff, unless
it's prohibiting my breathing.
I didn't know alot of the stuff you wrote about PJ. I've never been a
huge fan, probably because I like MLB so much. I guess I felt like it would
be kind of disrespectful to Andy's memory to become a huge fan. I actually
felt an anger at Stone and Jeff for going on with out Andy. I know, I
know... that's fucking crazy. But I really loved Andy alot. I despised
Eddie for a loooong time, just 'cuz he was standing where Andy should have
been. Even at Lolla '92, I felt sick watching PJ play. It was so weird
watching and listening to Stone and Jeff play without Andy. Eventually
though, I got over it. I can't say I've ever bought a PJ album, but somehow
I always end up with them. People give them to me. No, wait. I did buy the
"Jeremy" single, because my fave PJ song is "Yellow Ledbetter". That's
really a groovy song. Anyway... enough babbling. Thanks for sharing the
info. I still think Eddie's a whiny bastard, but that's just my personal
opinion.

>So think how Eddie feels: These Gappy little punks are in sense dirtying

Eddie may whine alot, but the man is not an idiot. I'm sure he knew
that if he published his songs, then people were going to listen to them. If
he didn't want a certain group of people knowing about his life and his
feelings, then he shouldn't have made the songs available to the public. But
then again... maybe the man IS an idiot. I guess since none of us really
know him, we'll never find out which it is. But we DO know he whines alot.

I'd laugh if I saw Eddie in his underwear. He's not exactly my idea of
a stud. The man has to be all of what... 5'8"? Maybe 5'9", but that's
pushing it. But CHRIS on the other hand... he'd make a mouth-watering
underwear model. Mmmm... ok... I'll shut up now... Heheheh...

My top five reasons for DOTU not to be released:
1- The first time I hear my favorite new song on the radio, I'm going to
freak out, and probably wreck my car and kill myself.
2- The first time I hear my favorite new song being insulted by someone, I'm
going to freak out, and probably kill them... then there'll be all that nasty
court stuff... and since I'm not OJ or Snoop, I'll probably get life in
prison or death by being forced to listen to Hootie & the Blowfish until I
either kill myself, or go into an irreversable coma.
3- The first time I hear SG perform my favorite new song live, I'm going to
freak out, and probably forget that I'm in the pit at Lolla with all the
smelly and drunk Metallica fans... I'll get knocked to the ground and
trampled to death.
4- The first time I see the video for my favorite new song, I'm going to
freak out, and demand that everyone shut the fuck up so I can fully enjoy the
moment... but of course one of my wise-ass friends will think it's funny to
change the channel on me, making me miss a few precious seconds of seeing
Chris' (hopefully) half naked body running across the screen, and then of
course I'm going to have to kill them... see #2 for the rest of this reason.
5- The first time I meet Chris (I hope I hope), I'm going to ask him about my
favorite new song, and when he ignores me or gets Ben to spit on me, I'm
going to freak out and make a huge scene, which I've already described to
Foreshocks since hopefully if I get to meet Chris, she'll be there, too...
and after I embarrass the shit out of her, and she chases down Chris and begs
him not to ban her from ever buying another SG cd (she told me she would beg
him), and he bans her anyway... she's going to chase me down and kill me...
(she hasn't told me this part yet... j/k Erin!!)
So you see people... this cannot be a good thing. I'm too young to
die!!! (Notice, please... I've recovered from my pre-midlife crisis quite
nicely, thanks to some amature psychotherapy from some of y'all). Thank

as far as my friend, who is somewhat of an expert in this department,
"Sealth" was a mis-rendering of "Seathl" (notice the position of the

easy to pronounce "seathl" as "seattle". So they called him Chief

white men founded the town that we call Seattle. The Indian founders
called their civilized areas by different names. So, ANYWAY... yes, it
is speculated that he didn't really say that great speech... but if he

The question about Bill Nye shook this loose in my
aging brain. Bill Nye was on the cast of a Seattle
based comedy show called "Almost Live", that was picked

bits on the show was called "The Lame List", subtitled
"What's Weak this Week", where they polled the Seattle
Heavy Metal Community (their description, not mine)
about various subjects ("the club you're playing only has
Near Beer"..."your new girlfriend turns out to be 16"...
"the rent goes up") to which the answer was usually
"lame!" or sometimes, if the question was too intellectual/
confusing, they would just look puzzled. The footage
was usually the same group of guys, one of whom looked
very much like Kim Thayil. Anybody ever seen and identified
the people/musicians in this sketch?

Subject: McCheese Sucks

After looking at my sent mail, I've seen my useless posts:
Sorry Everyone. Didn't mean to go on tangents.

But on to the next issue:

I am the biggest Ben fan. Last night I was drunk and I get very
misanthropic when I get drunk. People suck. I just kept hearing "Face
Pollution" yelling in my head. This is my intrepretation
of Face Pollution (BMF Music:Ben Lyrics:Chris (who is this?))

Face pollution is just about people that suck. Everyone sucks. Everyone
is self centered, and if you think about all the people in the world, you
don't matter. What makes you better than some dying kid in Ethiopia that
is starving? So what if you get a job with Microsoft. Your just feeding
the american machine. Chris says he "can count it on (his) fingers" and
"(He's) got all (his) reasons not to feel" just like everyone else. He
wants to be self centered and forget about the world. He's seen so many
people that don't matter he's "numb as rigor mortis". "Scared by monkey
faces" <what a great line. Walk around a mall once. Everyone is just
like everyone else. Just a bunch of "monkey faces". "Drowned in shark
fins" I believe has reference to a feeling eaten alive by everything.
You see the fins on the top and underneath lurk the teeth.

"But I don't feel like feeling
Feeling like you" <doesn't want to be self centered and monkey faced.

"Now I'm in the mirror
Now it's getting clear
I fear that I'm in you" <realization that he is self centered.

"Now I'm into plastics
Now I've made a mask" <he hides his self centeredness

"It looks like fish heads" <you tell me . . . roly-poly fish heads

"But I don't feel like feeling
Feeling like you" <as before

Face pollution
Face pollution
Face pollution
Face pollution
<exactly what I see in the bars. just a bunch of
face pollution. I don't matter. I'm just a face in the crowd. What the
hell do I matter and what the hell do you matter. I don't think chris
wants to be self centered and think that he matters. Rock and roll isn't
gonna change the world.

The next order of buisness is the word "fuck":

My newyears resolution is not to use it. I still do by habit. I was
listening to "Big Dumb Sex" and I realized how violent the word fuck is.
I mean, sex is supposed to be a beutiful thing. And what do we say when
we are mad: "Fuck you". SEx and violence are so mingled in society, and
it's disturbing. To think that we wish the sex act on someone and think
of it in violent terms makes me realize why there are so many battered
women and rape. I'm not for censorship, but I think people need to think
about what they say. I think the big joke behind "Big Dumb Sex" is that
people that listen to butt rock think about women in this manner. There
is no love in their sex, just primial urge that rock seems to push too
often. Soundgarden (and mainly KiM) are more philosophical, and want to
just tell all the trash to just come out and say what they mean. and by
doing so it reveals just how ugly they are.

If it makes sense to you,
					it's McCheese.

Eddie Vedder is originally from Evanston, IL which I think is near Chicago.
And to everyone who is always complaining about Pearl Jam don't buy the
albums if you don't like the music. Nobody ever said that you had to buy
them. It seems like you guys are the whiny bastards not Eddie. And another
thing he said the right thing at the grammys.

Just to add a few more info: Vedder was born in Evanston, Illinois. He left
during his high school years for San Diego. He was basically a surfer and
lazy ass while in San Diego. He played in a band called Bad Radio. He
recorded a demo called the Footsteps Trilogy which consists of Footsteps,
Alive, and Once. If you compare these songs, they all kinda deal with the
same theme. These tapes found their way to Stone Gossard, and the band was
formed.

Hope this helps.
