SOUNDGARDEN'S THAYIL JAMS WITH YOKO - by Bob Scheu

Guitarist Adds Spice to Stunning Set

In a move that brought the capacity crowd to the brink of frenzy,
Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil shared the stage at Seattle Crocodile
Cafi with Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon. Thayil jammed with guitarist Sean
Lennon for one tune, and Lennon was entirely up to the chore. Lennon
and his band, IMA were tight and expert. Lennon is so good that he
will no doubt offer further fuel for the nature vs. nuture debate. Is
he great because of John's genetic influence, because of Yoko's? Sort
of silly, isn't it? IMA was also joined on keyboards by Seattle
scenester Scott McCaughey of Young Fresh Fellows and lately of R.E.M.

Kyle Petty is a NASCAR racer, and happens to be the son of Richard Petty,
who is a NASCAR legend. He still holds records on some tracks. So you
are right on the mark, but now you have the context...'don't you take no

Actually, on my bootleg of SG's Brixton show, the first thing Chris says
seems to be "TITS OUT!!" I wasn't sure at first because the quality wasn't
that good, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is.. Maybe someone else can
verify this.. Has anyone got this boot?

My interpretation is that it's a huge pisstake, as so many things seem to be
where SG are concerned.. I read an article in one of the shittier magazines
in England (Metal Hammer?) where either Chris or Kim was saying "We are the
sort of band that girls get their tits out for" I thought that was hilarious..

I started thinking about this the other day when I heard a Rolling Stones
song on the radio.

Ever wonder how Soundgarden is going to end their career? I mean, are they
going to continue on like RS until everyone is sick of them (not that many
of us will get sick of them). Can you imagine Kim, Chris, Ben and Matt,
sitting in wheelchairs, old and decrepit (sp?), playing Big Dumb Sex? That
would be kind of funny, but unrealistic.

What do you think will lead to the demise of SG? I can't see them breaking up.
I don't want to see one of them die (like Kurt). I dunno. It just seems
kind of weird. I don't want them to stop creating music, but I don't want
them to become like RS. I am babbling now, so I am off.

My guess is they'll end more like the Who. They'll go for a long time,
and eventually they'll get bored and decide it's time to give it up.
They probably won't throw a huge going away party like the Who's Farewell
Tour, but I think the'll run a similar course.

Sounds pretty anticlimactic, but it doesn't look like Chris is going to
blow his brains out (a la Kurt Cobain) or Matt's going to drink himself
to death like John Bonham. And they seem to be a whole lot more cohesive
than the Eagles. Maybe they'll decide that what they really want is to
be a country-western band :-)

Anyway, I can't see them playing something like Big Dumb Sex at age 60
either.  Imagine JCP...

in response to the question, 'leaving here' is an old motown song written
by holland/dozier/holland, i'm not sure who did it originally, but pearl
jam covered it because the first incarnation of the Who (called the High
Numbers) covered it. PJ's version is closer to the original than the
who's version imo. if you're interested in hearing the who's version of
it, the only place you can get it easily is the maximum r&b box set.

     Soundgarden break up? What? Are you people INSANE? Are you MAD?!?!?
 Soundgarden will NEVER break up!!!! Umm... well, maybe they will, but I
kinda think (call it Shroom intuition, if you wish) but what's going to
happen is that one (or more) of the band members will kick the bucket first.
 Sorry... but every time I think of SG ending, I think of that freaky dream I
had a month or two ago. Remember people??!!??? One of the NORMAL posts I
sent in? Think hard... the one where I was watching the MTV news, and Kurt
Loder announced that Chris and Matt had died in a head on collision with a
truck? Yah, well... that's how I think it's going to happen. Depressing,
huh? But I can't really see Chris up on stage when he's like a hundred and
twenty, like Mick Jagger... running around without a shirt so all of us old
women can clutch our sagging breasts and scream and freak out over his
ancient sexiness.
     Don't get me wrong people, I'll always love SG, UNLESS they turn into a
country western band. I can't stomach CW.. Make's me wanna spew. But
wait... maybe they'll turn into some kind of cool rockabilly group, like the
Rev Horton Heat or the Cramps or something. Ok... guess I've babbled enough
for now. Oh wow... was this another NORMAL post I sent in? Gee... how 'bout
that?  <kisskiss>

PS... when I was a kid, Cyndi Lauper was my idol. Hey NM... I love ice tea,
too.

I got the 3rd Wellwater 7". Its hilarious, ben Shepherd sings in
Vietnamese (I think, its an oriental language with French influence.)
It sounds like an oriental sixties band. Its a slightly different style
than the other 2 7"s.

To All>>>

	I know this is the SG list but there are only so many things we
can say or debate about a limited number of albums. Besides I have other
musical interests outside the boys from Seattle. So, what else is in
rotation at your Music Player of choice...
	NOTE: I am not soliciting commentary about other bands but rather
a snap shot of what others are litstening to while we wait for the new
album... I am always on the look out for new groups and styles to check
out. I am a Musical Omnivore.

Here are my three "Heavy Rotation Choices":

	1) Afro-Peruvian Classics "The Soul Of Black Peru"

	   -A Christmas present from my brother to fill my World Music
	    jones. Kick ass latin/afro acustic pop from some of the
	    unknown greats of Peru. Does have a track from a David
            Byrne, late of the Talking Heads.

	2) Cowboy Junkies "Lay It Down"

	   -Mellow Rock Bliss. Damn! Margo's voice knocks me out.

	3) Everclear "Sparkle and Fade"

	   -Local Boys make good. Love this album. Especially track 3
	    "You Make Me Feel Like A Whore".

Two new albums that are in the "Checkin' Them Out Hard Phase":

	1) The Spinanes "Strand"

	   -Local Girl and Boy make good. Like it, but bears repeated
	    listening for before it becomes one of my Heavies.

	2) Spain "The Blue Moods Of Spain"

	   -Heard a track on the local "Alternate" station and had to
	    check these 4 guys out. So far nothing disapoints.

	Anyway, that is what floating my musical boat right now... I have
to say my favorite SG album to date is Superunknown. I really liked
Badmoter Finger, but it is miles away from the musical maturity of their
last, IMHO. Unfortunately, I really overplayed Superunknown (if it had
been record rather than a CD, I would have plowed through 2 or 3 of them
from wear and tear) and it has languished for awhile. I am sure that it
will once again find it's way back into my good graces.

SA>out. I am a Musical Omnivore.

Alrighty...some bands I listen to a lot, other than Soundgarden.

 -Savatage "Streets: A Rock Opera" "Edge of Thorns" "Handful of Rain"
These guys write great lyrics. Streets is a great album, and the
singer sings his heart out. On Edge of Thorns, there's a new singer,
who just happens to be a pretty freakin' awesome vocalist. Then some
drunk guy decided to smash into the guitar player (who just happened to
be pretty damn good, and who wrote some damn fine music) and kill him.
So Alex Skolnick, from Testament, joined them and did a damn fine job
on Handful of Rain. These are great depressing albums.

 -King Missile "Happy Hour" "King Missile"
John S. Hall rules! He's funny as hell, and he writes some pretty
good, and weird, music. I want more King Missile stuff, but I can't
find any here in Hickville.

 -Candlebox "Candlebox"
I love Candlebox. Don't You rules. Sounds a bit like Soundgarden too
(Don't You, anyway).

 -Pearl Jam "Ten"
Two words. Black rules. Seven more words. So does the rest of the
album.

 -They Might Be Giants
I love everything by TMBG. They write great lyrics, that at a glance
seem to be just nonsense stuff, but after a few hundred listens, they
start to make sense. They make you think too...sometimes.

 -Twisted Willie
This is great. I love Willie's lyrics, and the bands that do the songs
did a great job. Jerry Cantrell did a great job on I've Seen All This
World I Care To See. And even though I can't stand country music, I
like the songs Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash (and Kim helped, too)
did, too.

Other bands I listen to a whole lot:
Primus
Alice in Chains
Faster Pussycat
Wolfhounds
Black Crowes (I LOVE Shake Your Moneymaker)
James
Rage Against the Machine (I think it's about time for a new one)

Ok, I think I went overboard, but I couldn't stop. I've been waiting
to glorify Savatage for a while now. If anyone wants more info on any
of these bands, I can probably help.

GR>Ever wonder how Soundgarden is going to end their career?

If they ever retire, I hope they decides it sucks, like Ozzy did.

GR>going to continue on like RS until everyone is sick of them (not that many
GR>of us will get sick of them).

I wouldn't get sick of them, but I hope they don't start rehashing the
same stuff for years to come. Like Aerosmith, I mean. Chris once said
that he hopes they make music for a long time, but he doesn't want to
see them turn into an Aerosmith, where, at forty, they play the same
thing they played when they were ninteen. I would hate to see that,
too. But it would be cool to see them play Jesus Christ Pose when
they're 80.  I'll bet Matt would slow it down...just a bit.

GR>What do you think will lead to the demise of SG?

I doubt they would break up, although Chris did say that sooner or
later, he'll probably do a solo album. I would LOVE that...as would
Shroom, right?  ;)

GR>I don't want to see one of them die (like Kurt).

Chris said that he would never do a thing like that. People used to
wonder who would go first...between Eddie and Kurt. It never seemed to
me that Eddie would do something like that...not that I know him, but
he just doesn't seem like he would (I'm going by the music, here).
Eddie isn't as big into drugs as Kurt was...at least that's the
impression I got. And Chris seems to be the least likely to kill
himself. I mean, there are some songs, but I think he'd think about
his fans before he'd ever do that. I doubt he would disappoint us by
putting a hole in his noggin.

GR> I dunno. It just seems kind of weird.

I can't imagine the day they stop making music. It's their lives. Why
would they give it up? They might stop touring, because that has to be
hard, but they'll probably keep recording until it's no longer
possible, I'm sure...at least I hope.

WX>>Here are my three "Heavy Rotation Choices":
WX>This sounds fun. Here are my picks:
WX>1) Superunknown, Badmotorfinger--I just recently joined the list, and
WX>reading what you all have to say has whipped me into a Soundgarden frenzy
WX>(just ask my roommate!)

Badmotorfinger has been in my CD player for quite a while now. I love
Rusty Cage and JCP and Mind Riot. If anyone has a tab for Mind Riot, I
would love it. I haven't been able to find one yet...except in that
book, but I'm not paying $20 for a book when I have tabs for every song
but Mind Riot.

WX>I guess I'm just really into that Seattle sound (Pearl Jam, SG, AIC, STP).

Uh-oh. I feel a flame coming on for that STP one. Not from me,
though...I knew what you meant. :)

WX>stuff out on my guitar. Anyone happen to know what chords those are at
WX>beginning of Fell On Black Days?

Well, I guess I'll just send the tab, since I don't remember.

WX>Do they have the actual video for Spoonman on the CD?

Nope. Just Artis. Too bad, though...I've only seen it twice.

WX>live version of Kickstand.

I can;'t get over how much I love this. I just love it. I could watch
it all day.

WX>I'm just wondering if there's some other stuff on there that
WX>I haven't found yet.

Did you find the Pong game? It's lame, but it's just one of those
things you have to find. And you can open the individual files
(without running the whole CD+ thing) and listen to some songs that
youd hear in the photo gallery. I think we might hear some of this
stuff on the new album. It's pretty groovy.

WX>but you've got to realize I'm currently
WX>in a state of Soundgarden hysteria.

I have been for the past couple years. I think we all have.

WX>Boy, am I glad I joined this list.

Me too. The best thing since the cheese grater. Cheese is good.

WX> -I'm going to have to look into this Iced Tea thing. ;)

But Iced Tea is better.

Andrew Northcutt <northcut@winnie.fit.edu>

This song was taken from the Cherry Lane book with a couple of my
suggestions to make it easier to play.
WOW! A Soundgarden song in normal tuning!
Whole song is in 6/4 time.
KEY
 b/4=1/4th bend, b/h=half bend, b/f=full bend
 h=hammer on
 p=pull off
 / OR \=slide up/down
                           Fell on Black Days
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This one of the simplest songs by Soundgarden. The key is G and the
guitar is in normal tunning. You'll play the intro rhythm most of the
song but anyway, simple or not IT ROCKS!!!

In the last bar of this rhythm, guitar II plays in the 9th fret on the G
string bent a full step and lets go slowly.
   Verse rhythm--------------|  FILL 1------------------|
                  Play 3 times   4/4 time        B||--0--||back
G||---9----4--2-0-0-0-0-0-----||---9----4--2-0-0--||--0--|| to
D||o--9--x-4--2-0-2-2-2-2----o||---9--x-4--2-0-2--||--2--|| 6/4
A||o--7--x-2------3-3-3-3----o||---7--x-2------3--||--3--||time!
E||-----------------------0---||------------------||-----||
           b/h                           b/h

For the verse play Verse rhythm 9 times(above).

The little fill is written in a wierd way in the book so I'll transcribe
my version which I feel sounds even better. (Play in 4/4 and return to 6/4)
   FILL 2
E||--------------------||----------0-0--||
B||--0--0-0--0--0-0----||----------0-0--||
G||--------------------||-------7--0-0--||
D||--9--9-9--9--9-9\7--||--7-7----------||
A||--------------------||-------5--7-7--||
E||--7--7-7--7--7-7\5--||--5-5-----8-8--||

For the chorus, play the verse rhythm 3 times and then FILL 1.
Then the verse rhythm comes again 9 times (told ya!) and FILL 2.
This time Kim plays a little fill in FILL 2 which goes:

     ^^^^^(vibrato notes)         ^^^^^^^            ^^^^
B||--------------------||----10---10-----10-------||-----||He plays this
G||--7---------9----7--||----------------------9--||-(9)-||at the end too.
D||--------9-----------||-------------------------||-----||
A||--------------------||-------------------------||-----||
               b/f           b/f         b/f

Now play the Verse rhythm 3 times for the chorus and now the cool part comes:

   "black days. How would.. Play 2 x
G||---9---4---2-0-0\--7--7--7--||--9-x-4---2-0--0-0-0-0-----||

D||--9-x-4---2-0-2----2-2--||

Interlude(alas, a different rhythm!): (4/4 time).

E||--------------------------------------||------------------------------||

(Suprise, suprise)Play Verse Rhythm 8 times for last verse.
In the "Hands are for shaking" part play these chords:
(4/4 time first 2 bars, 2/4 last one)

                                    Play 3 times
E||------------------||-----------0-0--||-(0)---||
B||------------------||-----------0-0--||-(0)---||
G||o--9--9-9----9----||--------7--0-0--||-(0)--o||

A||---7--7-7--9-7-9--||--\7-7--5--7-7--||-(7)---||
E||-----------7---7--||--\5-5-----8-8--||-(8)---||

Guess what? Play the Chorus with the verse rhythm but NOW you play with
this fill:

B||-------------------||--------------------||------------------||
G||--4--/9-9--/12-12--||--\4--/9-9--/12-12--||--13--\7-7--/9-9--||
D||-------------------||--------------------||------------------||
A||--2--/7-7--/10-10--||--\2--/7-7--/10-10--||--11--\5-5--/7-7--||
E||-------------------||--------------------||------------------||

B||------------------7-7-7--||
G||--13--9--/14-14\--7-7-7--||
D||------------------7-7-7--||
A||--11--7--/12-12\--5-5-5--||
E||-------------------------||

Play this with the "How would I know.." riff:
                               Play 3 times
B||---9-------------||---------------------||
G||o--9--9--/12-12--||--13--\7-7--/14-14--o||
D||o--9-------------||--------------------o||
A||---7--7--/10-10--||--11--\5-5--/12-12---||
E||not played

B||--9-------------||--------------------||
G||--9--9--/14-14--||--13--\7-7--/14-14--||
D||--9-------------||--------------------||
A||--7--7--/12-12--||--11--\5-5--/12-12--||
E||not played

And for the grand "finale" play FILL 2 and let the last note ring out.
Oh yeah the outro solo goes like this:
     ^^^^       ^^^           ^^^

Umm one reason it is in England :) No, but if you think about it, the stuff
that is on MTV etc happens like once a year or when a new album/single or
something comes out. Otherwise it's pretty much crap 24 hours a day. Was in
the US in the 80's and wasn't MTV great then :) I think I got all of
Modonna's videos day after day :) But us down in Aust. are about the
same...only occasionally do we get some really cool stuff on TV about bands
etc. We started getting the MTV unplugged each week just resently so that's
cool. But as for the rest...oh well I guess I could shell out some cash for
cable.....

I don't know, i think they will continue on and on, They have been around
for a fair while now and nothing has shown them to even think of stopping.
As for becoming like RS...look and bands like Sonic Youth..while not as old
as RS (Kym is something like 43) they are still curning out cutting edge/new
music, and have not yet got boring. So maybe that's how Sg will go...on and
on into the distance continuing with new music :) Hope so anyway

Yeah.. sorry about that... I didn't correct my message. I meant to write:
"biting, fighting back from dying'

And yes, not "biting, fighting, back from dying." Just seems that he's
fighting back from dying rather than back from dying... more senseable...
then again "I'm tightrope walking a 2 ton shoe" isn't all that senseable.

This sounds fun. Here are my picks:

1) Superunknown, Badmotorfinger--I just recently joined the list, and
reading what you all have to say has whipped me into a Soundgarden frenzy
(just ask my roommate!)

2) Mad Season--I now really appreciate the song Long Gone Day on this
album. Any other Alice In Chains fans out there? I guess I'm just really
into that Seattle sound (Pearl Jam, SG, AIC, STP).

3)  Dulcinea--Toad the Wet Sprocket.  I can't listen to Seattle-sound all
the time (though I have been making a valiant effort in the last few weeks).

Incidentally, this has been a good day for me. Around 7:00 PM ET tonight
(I'm at Penn State) I went out to get a blank tape at a CD store here, but
naturally I drifted over to the Soundgarden stuff. They had Alive In The
Superunknown barely used for $10! I said, "screw the blank tape," and
bought the CD. There is a LOT of cool stuff on that thing! I'm so excited.
I've just been sitting here watching all the videos (there are about a
million of them for my favorite Soundgarden song, Superunknown) and figuring
stuff out on my guitar. Anyone happen to know what chords those are at the
beginning of Fell On Black Days? I think it's an E, then some other ones,
then a C. Do they have the actual video for Spoonman on the CD? I found
Fell On Black Days, Black Hole Sun, The Day I Tried to Live, My Wave, and,
of course, Superunknown (all of which are videos that one would see on MTV
if MTV actually played videos instead of showing us The Real World 17 and
other shows about people we don't care about), in addition to a live version
of Kickstand. I'm just wondering if there's some other stuff on there that
I haven't found yet. It took me while to figure out what was going on. My
roommate need sleep, so I guess I have to stop playing with it for now out
of respect for his well-being. That's why I'm doing something quiet like
e-mail. I'm really rambling here, but you've got to realize I'm currently
in a state of Soundgarden hysteria. Boy, am I glad I joined this list.
Talk to you later then.

Soundgarden break up?  No...

No, we get specials :) On ABC (government channel) so no ads :) I guess it's
alright, but usally the specials are months after whatever it was went to
air. Otherwise if I want to watch other American progys..like Saturday Night
Live on May 18th where a good band just happens to be playing...I have to
buy cable. And yeah I don't watch TV much..only when something good is
on...but then I miss out on everything that I don't read about beforehand :)
Oh well TV sucks anyway.
