SOUNDGARDEN MAN IN NEAR DEATH DRAMA
               ===================================

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil has admitted that his own
life-and-death struggle has inspired one song on the band's
forthcoming album.

Speaking exclusively to K! from Seattle, Thayil revealed that
the lyrics for 'Never the Machine Forever' were based on his own
personal experiences. "I wrote the lyrics for it" he says. "it's
about a life-and-death match between an individual and a less
specifically defined entity. And, yes, it's based on personal
experience."

The enigmatic guitarist also revealed that the Seattle quartet's
fifth studio album - which is due for a late May release - will
see them experimenting still further with their sound.

"Some songs are a little bit softer and more introspective than
before, and there's a whole bunch of songs that are really fast."
he explains. "There's less of the big thick guitar, mid-tempo
slow grunge songs. In fact I don't think that there are any of
those. And there's some weird things in there too - well,
Ben Shepherd (Bass) has done a lot more writing than usual this
time around."

The as-yet-untitled album was recorded as Pearl Jam guitarists
Stone Gossards' Studio Litho in Seattle. Among the tracks set to
appear on the set are 'Never The Machine Forever', 'Hot Rod Death
Toll', 'Boot Camp', 'Blow Up The Outside World' and 'Devil King Of
Children'.

"How weird have we gone?" ponders Thayil. "Well, it's weird for us
rather than weird in the absolute sense - although maybe a couple of
songs are strange. There's some mandolin on the record, and there's
one song that's almost ambient. There's less of that Soundgarden
stamp, but there's still a distinct Soundgarden sound. Basically
everything's more vocal-orientated, less riffy, but still with plenty
of heavy guitar everywhere."

Soundgarden will release a new as-yet-unconfirmed single through A&M
on May 6. A World tour is expected to follow the album.

Subject: SOMMS ON T-SHIRT

Hey guys this is Ben Timberlake (btimlake@nwu.edu) posting from home on
spring break. My mail is being forwarded, so I'm keeping up with the list. I
AM still tabulating votes for <SOMMS> and <SOMMS@MIT.EDU>, but I'm only
counting those that come to me directly.
Right now, I have the following votes:
mercylib@erie.net (Mercyhurst Prep Library)
ar303921@student.uq.edu.au
zelux@owlnet.rice.edu (Justin Philip Zachariah)

If you are not in this list, _please_ email me directly (at btimlake@nwu.edu)
with your vote.
Oh, and I hadn't thought of this before, but I guess your vote only counts if
you're actually getting a shirt.
Later. -Ben

P.S. URBANO, I'll just continue this vote until your thing is set up. If your
script takes this vote into account, I guess yours can take precedence since
it's probably set up in a better manner.

Shroom, Gregg and Interested Parties>>>

Having the read the alleged statements stating that Chris
Cornell was letching women (girls?) at B-day party in LA I would
counsel deep skepticism. First, you have someone (actually it could be
anyone) making unsubstantiated statements about Chris. We do not know
if he was in fact present at the party. If he was, were there a
witnesses that could confirm or deny the statement made by SACNAC? It
is useless to speculate as to the veracity of the source, we don't
really know who she(?) is, whether she is straight up or just plain
sick.
My lawyer friends would call this heresy evidence and if
proven false would open up SACNAC to a nice juicy libel suite. This is
how really damaging rumors get started. There is no trial, no rules of
evidence to protect either party. I can say anything about either
person (Chris or SACNAC) and there would not be any need for proof...
. However, at this time, to pass judgment on either party would be
premature. UNLESS someone wants to really follow up on this and try
and get to the "TRUTH", I say let this die... otherwise, we will fall
into the trap of speculation, innuendo and plain mean spirited gossip
like the news media we all love and hate.

TO whoever cares:
I am really looking forward to the new album, more songs by ben and kim
and matt, that could be a really good thing. Not that Chris's songs aren't
good. It's just that I think that the best songs are when the whole band
collaborates on a song together. "JCP", "Room a thousand years wide",
"Slaves and bulldozers", "Mailman", "Fresh Tendrills" , "Limo Wreck" I
think you guys get the point by now. I just think that if we get 16-18
songs worth of songs like those I will be one happy camper. Hmm... oh yeah
mild question if music was a orgasm would it be the 6 minute jam session
on reach down or am I just insane? Or would it be the middle part of Head
Down where they all go nuts for a few measures. Or the end of Fresh
tendrils. Sorry for the sex motif but with shroomster's constant "let's
molest chris" machinations it was bound to happen.

You read my mind!! Oh man... the things that go through my twisted
mind whenever I listen to that!! I think one of the sexiest things in the
world are the faces that guitarists make when they're really getting into the
music. It looks like they're having really really REALLY good sex.

     A thousand million apologies. I can't help it. I'm obsessed. But I'm
definitely NOT the only pervert on this list. I've gotten tons of mail from
people who feel exactly the same as me. And since it's been TWO years since
SG's toured... well, I'm sure you can understand that I'm, ummm... musically
frustrated. But to defend myself, SG was one of my favorite bands before I
even knew what Chris looked like. The picture of him on LTL is not very
clear. But once I saw him... ummm... the rest is, as they say, history.
What can I say? When it comes to Chris, my middle name is Lecherous. SG
perverts unite!!! <kisskiss>

Now, not that i am upset at all about Shroom's (Hey that reminds me
of..nevermind) obsession with Chris. I'm just upset about the way male's
would be treated differently for the same kind of obsession. For
instance, i find it funny how back in the good ole days discussions about
Susan Silver's looks were quickly quieted. Also, say me and Clown said
we were gonna go kidnap Tonya Donnelly and perform devious acts upon her
luscious body. What would the female reaction to that be? Anyone?
Well, i think i'll step off the soapbox now. Adios. -j

Ok... fair enough. So men would get treated differently if they started
discussing a woman's looks (but in all fairness, this IS the SG mailing list,
and Chris is open to discussion). That's life, my friend. Both sexes have
their drawbacks. Think about this, if you will:
When you go to a concert during the summer, it's hot as hell. Guys get
to run around half naked, and no one thinks twice about it (well, sometimes I
think twice about it. It depends on the guy). But if a girl (like myself)
wears something considered scanty (such as the bikini top I'm wearing in my
picture on the page), then she's considered a groupie, or a slut. What about
the comfort factor? Why doesn't anyone consider this? I know I'm sure as
hell not going to wear a full size shirt in 90 degree weather. Of course,
there I go being a hypocrite again. Like I said on my profile... dressing
like a hootchie gets ya stuff. And yah, quite often it gets you backstage and
on tour buses. I know most of you will scorn me for writing all this... but
I am not a groupie. I'm a POTENTIAL SG groupie. But so are alot of women on
this list. As we all know perfectly well, SG despises groupies. I suppose
I'm the type of fan they hate, but as I said before... I loved the music
before the flesh. SG is just an all around perfect band. And if they don't
like it... TOUGH. This is the way I am. Obsessed and twisted. Ain't life
grand? <kisskiss>
                                          Shroom
PS... Tonya Donnelly is ok... but I wouldn't do her.

Hey out there, I need some info, does anyone know about what time
Soundgarden will play? I got a buddy that wants to fly from Ohio to
Fargo ND to go to Detroit Lakes, MN June 30, the day of the show. He
can't leave until that day. He said he wouldn't miss it though. If
anyone out there can help me, I would appreciate it.
thanks
