you can't find the heaviness in kyle petty? where are you
looking? there is no way you can draw a comparison between kyle petty and
something like 1979. the vocals are obviously miles apart, and the riff
kim built is a crunchy as all hell.

Ok peoples... I was perusing a few of the thirteen million bulletin boards on
AOL, and I cam across this post. Believe this fool, or not. Here it is:
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Subj: McCready on SG
Date: 96-03-10 22:22:49 EST
From: Tatcat

Mike McCready of Pearl Jam posted in the Pearl Jam folder a day or two ago.
He mentioned Soundgarden, to wit:

<<Went and heard the new Sound Garden and it's incredible! A mixture of
Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Sex Pistols that will blow your collective minds.
One song was so amazing that I almost literally puked! It's incredible.>>

People I trust tell me it was really McCready posting, spelling errors and
all.

Sorry if this is old news.

Ok peoples... here's another AOL thingy I came across tonight. I was in the
MTV Yack rooms (please don't persecute me for it, I was bored), and I
casually mentioned how Chris Cornell is GOD, and this chic announced that
Chris was an asshole and a pervert. I asked for an explanation. This is the
conversation, verbatim:

SACNAC:	Do you want me to tell you?
ShRooMGrLz:	sure, why not...
SACNAC:	first..where do you live?
ShRooMGrLz:	Dallas
SACNAC:	oh..Im from Los Angeles..OK i was in a club and he was going around
thinking he was the shit and i didnt even know who he was so i was going out
the door from the club and he grabbed my
SACNAC:	arm and like played all slick and kissed me out of nowhere.
ShRooMGrLz:	Yah, right.
ShRooMGrLz:	Age?
SACNAC:	19..he kept saying stupid shit like your so pretty..blah..blah..and
i didnt even know who he was until my boyfiend told me.
ShRooMGrLz:	Are you sure it was him?
ShRooMGrLz:	When was this?
SACNAC:	Of course im sure because i know the mang. of the club and he said
he was on the geust list.It was a few monthes ago or something at Lemmie of
Motorheads B-day party..And my boyfriends a musician so he would know.
ShRooMGrLz:	What happened after he tried to kiss you?
SACNAC:	does he have a girlfriend? And he wears makeup. nothing he just kept
going your so pretty and so forth then like an hour later i saw him kissing
another girl.
ShRooMGrLz:	He's married.
ShRooMGrLz:	He's been married since 1990
SACNAC:	NO SHIT!!!!
SACNAC:	oh fuck....now i feel bad!
SACNAC:	oh my god.
ShRooMGrLz: ok... whatever...

And then I signed off. Comments people? I'd love to

Well blimey!
For once I hear something from Kerrannnnnnnnnggggggggg!!!!!!
before I hear it form the List. Some more info on the new album...
I can't remember exact details cos I left the mag at home but the
typically sensationalist headline read ''SOUNDGARDEN MAN IN NEAR
DEATH DRAMA''....(you learn to ignore these things after you have
been reading Kerrrrrrraaaaaaaaaannnnnngggggggg!!! for a while)...It
was about a song Kim wrote called Never The Machine Forever, which
is about (he says) a ''life and death struggle'' and it is based on
personal experience. Whatever that means. He also said that the new
album was different, less riffy, with less of a Soundgarden stamp
but still with the distinctive sound. He said it was weirder & Ben
had done a lot more songwriting, and he said it was more
vocals-oriented. He also said that one of the songs was ''almost
ambient''. Well, this all sounds very interesting to me anyway.
Sorry I can't give more quotes; I forgot to bring it with me.

........Well, that's it from me for 5 weeks - Easter break!! Have
fun folks, seeya in 5 weeks' time....(by which time it will be just
about a month till the album comes out!!)....

There's more to a band than being heavy, not that Pearl Jam have turned soft
all of a sudden, how boring would it be if all their songs sounded like the
songs on Ten over the years..

1979 is a really cool song, it never gets played here, so it hasn't got boring
yet.. I think we've all come to expect that the singles a band releases get
old well before they ought to.. Take Today, it rocked but then it got old
REALLY quick..

As far as Soundgarden goes, I'd be surprised if this new album sounded like
anything they'd done before.. Superunknown was like that, Badmotorfinger was
too, Soundgarden have always changed their style and stayed diverse, that's
what's so good about them.

You might not like to see bands "evolving" but IMHO, that is the only way they
stay interesting.

sometimes he looks like he's wearing makeup (but he doesn't have the
same shaggability-rating as CC). Cos I know Metallica were at the
party....hmmmmm...interesting. Course it'd be very easy to make that
story up. I could've said all those things and you'd never know if
it was true. Maybe the other person was CC or Susan Silver, just out

Man, it's hard to address a message that's so devoid of accuracy,
but...When were Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins ever heavy? 'Heaviness'
has nothing to do with either band. They both have had a mix of slower
and faster songs. Metallica slowed down a bit (alot), but they are still
heavy. It's all a matter of energy. Soundgarden has had the same mix of
faster and slower songs for the last 3 albums. And Kyle Petty is soft??
Are you sure you weren't listening to Tom Petty??

I do have to agree that PJ was cooler than cool with Ten, and I don't
know what happened w/ the subsequent albums. I have a few theories,
like band problems and so on, but this is a debate I won't pick up on
this wonderful Sg list!

However, I also have to agree that bands must evolve. It's only human
nature. Think about it--these musicians, be it Sg or anyone, go thru
life just like we do, they face problems just like we do, moods,
disappointments, etc., just like we do. Don't YOU change over time?
So why wouldn't they? Frankly, IMHO, I think it would be terribly
boring if any band put out album after album that sounded the same.
People are fretting over the upcoming Sg album, and why not--we've been
anxiously awaitng it! I haven't heard one note of it yet, but I know
someone who has heard it all thru the mixing stages, and he says there
will be not doubt in anyone's mind that it IS Soundgarden. I can't
wait! I know what I'm expecting--hard, heavy, dark--but I also expect
some diffferences, b/c they are all changing and defining their sound
as they go.

The whole address has my vote also.. I want people to know it's more than just
a Soundgarden thing. We are somms@mit.ed and we are special because of it.
Besides to us it will always be a tribute to Seth as well as SG....

In this weeks Kerang! there is an interview with Kim about the new album
(like an idiot I forgot to bring the damn thing) but in it he describes the album
as being kinda trancy with less of the heavy guitar driven stuff with more
songs by Ben (remember head down). There are also some song titles including
Blow up the outside world (and others we've heard before) and a couple o' new
ones that I haven't heard before.

If I remember, I'll bring it in and post it to seth...

I agree that SOMMS@MIT.EDU is needed. I think it wouldn't mean the same

(the ADDRESS). I know someone is going to post "We are the list,

allright except for the somms part.
I'm with little joe when he is saying that if we

So i think somms@mit.edu as to be in the shirt.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine that has heard the new record!

Here are some song titles:
Pretty Noose
Blow Up the Outside World
Tighter & Tighter
Switch Open
Apple Bite
Zero Chance
No Attention
Over Floater
Ty Cobb
Never Named
An Unkind
Dusty.

Songs that may not be on the record but may be used for B-sides:
Bleed Together
Kyle Petty.

There isn't a name yet, nor is there any artwork. My source (who is VERY
reliable, trust me) says there should be something on radio as soon as late
April, with the record to come "sometime in May, unless it gets pushed back."

To whomsoever cares,
I don't feel like quoting the digest, so I am making a random disjointed
post. (Like nothing man) Lets see... okay first has anyone noticed that
the second track and vitalolgy sounds like down undershoe by hater,
they're another song on it that sounds like track 8 on the hater album, I
expected to hear "star lover, star lover" instead I heard vedder. Hmm, oh
yeah at 12:30 AM eastern time on march 14 1996, MTV did something right,
they played the "My Wave" video and then they played "Israel's Son" by
silver chair. I could be wrong but it sounds, like "flower" , "hands all
over" and "kyle petty son of richard" thrown in a blender. With some other
stuff thrown in, if those kids are still around in 5-10 years they could be
a fucking awesome band. Hmm.. oh yeah I personally would drive 10 hours to
hear sg play 1 song let alone 45 minutes. What else.... oh yeah you cannot
really flame a band for changing they're sound. As long as the music isn't
suffering from a artistic standpoint. Sg metemorphisized into a new band
almost with superunknown, but they quality of the music did not suffer.
The music was as dark as ever if not darker, the lyrics were the best the
band has ever written. The music they wrote are some of the most
complicated songs to date. Metallica on the other hand wrote 12 songs that
are basically the same. Like I was saying earlier, if you can play the
drum to one song on the black album you can basically play the drums to
the whole thing. Just speed up or slow it down. And do a random changeup
every couple of measures. Anyway I have rambled enough, c-ya

Thers's no particular order to the list of bands on. If your going to
do a decent tour each event has got to be special. Each event on this
would have to be 24 hours. I agree actually, terrorvision would be
better, I don't know what came over me for a moment but I actually

I must say I used to think like Nothingman (uh oh, that could be a dangerous
thing!) and Kazam in that Somms on its own would be better. But I see
Matt's point above. Otherwise, as Joco and Jamesetta and Andy and Mayor

we're just wearing a t-shirt from the EP, and not from OUR mailing list.

So how many votes is it now for somms@mit.edu???? Ben, are you counting?

Nothingman, I assume that after you have counted up final numbers for
t-shirt orders, you will then know a price. And you & Toni will have worked
out who will be receiving the money. And you will then post the mailing
list to let us all know who we should send the money to (the snail mail
address) and how much to send. Am I right?

Hey Chicka! Welcome back.

So, what's YOUR opinion? Do you want somms or somms@mit.edu??

Maybe some of those who haven't spoken up don't want a t-shirt. I know of a
couple of people who don't. And others who haven't spoken up probably don't
care WHAT'S on the shirt (within reason), they just want one!

Tonight I was and still am working on a programming assignment. I am so
sick of data abstraction, templates, inheiritance, etc . . . that I could
throw up. I would quit if not for the Mother Love Bone in my portable CD
player. Those songs are masterful.

Anyone check out the rerelease of Malfunkshun and is it worth getting?

Subject: CHRIS AND BEN... MARRIED?
From: afrazier@nc5.infi.net (FELIX)

Message-ID: <4hdi0h$h7b@nw003.infi.net>

Don't even BEGIN to accuse me of starting this rumor.
My friend, usually reliable, told me that on 103 WKDF, a local rock
station, they announced that Ben Shepherd and Chris Cornell flew to
Hawaii to be MARRIED because "that's the only state that allows same sex
marriages."

First of all, I know that california allows same sex marriages. Second
of all, I thought Chris was married to Soundgarden's marriage. I mean
this guy was serious. He has absolutely NO sense of humor, so I know
he's not playing a joke, so someone, please, someone TELL ME THAT THIS IS
NOT TRUE! Evidence is needed.

Peace and thanks in advance.

I would prefer an all Soundgarden show too, in a small venue. Those are the
best because the feeling is more intimate and the band seems more comfortable
too.

All I can say is do it! Ive seen them twice(On the Louder than Love tour,
and Superunknown) and even if they played one fucking song it would be
worth it. <<
I agree 100%. We've even gone to shows where Soundgarden backed up another
band just to see Soundgarden and then leave because we weren't interested in
the headlining band . I've seen them at least 5 times and loved every minute
of it (except for when they play a song that's been in heavy rotation on MTV
and you see all the "video generation fans" come to life because they don't
recognize any of the other stuff)
One more thing. Shroom :
>> And then I signed off. Comments people? I'd love to
hear 'em!!
I can't imagine Chris acting like that. That chick sounds like she thinks
she's really something and just wishes, or mistook someone else for him.
Just cause he was on the guest list doesn't mean it was him. I've heard him
cut down girls who are trying to get into his pants at concerts, and groupie
types in general, so I find it really hard to believe he would act like that.
I would have loved to have been her if it was him though.
Gotta go. I'm really glad this list exists.

Subject: various soundgarden ramblings

Finals are finally over so I thought I would reply to a few things which
have been "debated" over the digest the past few weeks. Forgive me if Im a
little behind...
Daveste wrote typical bullshit about how PJ has "sold out" by
getting soft. Personally, I think that Ten was their wimpiest album.
Songs like "Spin the black circle" etc etc. are obviously much more hard
core (as someone has already noted). If you dont believe me, perhaps you
should go see them live--they kick ass, and every song they play is given a
much harder edge. As to the Pumpkins--more bullshit, Zero is perhaps the
hardest song theyve ever done. In general,a band has to keep
evolving--otherwise they become a parody of themselves (re: ACDC, Sabbath).
While Im prepared to agree that songs like Black HS, and Fell on Black
days are "softer" than earlier material, they are also more complex
(lyrically) and have a lot more "texture" (musically). How many of us can
imagine a song like BHS on Louder than love?
Next subject. Driving 4-5 hours to see a 45min Soundgarden set.
All I can say is do it! Ive seen them twice(On the Louder than Love tour,
and Superunknown) and even if they played one fucking song it would be
worth it. Ive come to realize that such events are very rare and you
should grab them while you have the opportunity. Ive spent lots of hours
on the road following the dead (RIP), phish, and rush--Ive never regretted
it for a minute due to the people and places one gets exposed to...I live
in Salt Lake ( a favorite stopping place of SG apparently), and plan on
going to S. Calif, and colorado--anyone semi-interested should do the
same..who knows, you might even get to meet the infamous Shroom girl...(I
hope she's packing)
About bootlegs. Where, how much, and why. Never, never, never pay
more than $25 for a bootleg. Get Goldmine, track down the boot dealers
(theres over 15 currently advertising), and be patient. The same boots can
be had for anywhere between $20 and $35 (per disc), depending on which
dealer you choose. I agree that the tapes are out there...but tapes wear
out, and dubbing can be notoriously shitty, so get the CD's of the shows
that are worth it. Unfortunately, in terms of SG, there arent a ton of
good boots out there. I think the reason for this is that SG plays so
goddamn loud. I booted them in Ogden (see the homepage, I got a C+), but
they played so loud the whole arena was literally shaking--believe it or
not the tapes sound better than they did at the time. Even the KTS boot
"Crown of Thorns" sounds like shit, again probably due to sheer
volume--youre going to be dissapointed if you spend $70 for this 2CD set,
but $40 is at least reasonable...Before you spend your money, check out the
boot guide on The SG homepage, its 95% accurate, and you can get a good
idea of exactly whats on the CD youre thinking about
Someone was asking about the Lolla dates, there is an unnoffical
Lolla homepage which is listing all of the (preliminary) dates, gleamed
mostly from the mettalica page, I think...
        Anyway, back to grading... Carlyle@anthro.utah.edu
