i think the album everyone is talking about is a reissue of shine
and apple w/ 2 bonus tracks...another version of "Capricorn Sister" and
the second being "Lady Godiva Blues" they put it out as "Mother Love
Bone" after pearl jam got big just to see if it would brush off on mother
Love Bone's record sales. It was around the time the whole seattle thing
got big. Jeff Ament was really pissed about it though cause he said that
"Lady Godiva Blues" wasn't good enough to be on the album since they had
never released it before.
and btw, it's so weird, the only time i really get to see SG
videos is on Beavis and Butt-head. So far on that show i've seen Rusty
Cage, Outshined, Spoonman, and Black Hole Sun on that show..

Well guys always dream of 2 girls kissing, with or without them in the
middle, so i guess this once we'll let you get away with it :) This doesn't
have to do with all those RHCP photos with everyone hanging toungues in each
others ear etc etc does it?? Enjoy the dreams and I can see you sleeping

From: Gregory Wawro <gw12@tempter.arts.cornell.edu>
Subject: head down

"Head Down" is my favorite song on _SuperUnknown_, mostly because of
Matt's incredible drumming.

Here's what I think "Head Down" is about. It's about people ("the
establishment," your parents, etc.) keeping you down and preventing you
from enjoying life to the fullest. "We" in the song is anyone who keeps
you down. They watch you and figure out what makes you feel good
(laughing, dancing, smiling) or how you express happiness and take it away
from you or force you to suppress it. They like it when you fail, and
beat you down when you try to succeed.

The imagery in the song is very powerful (I had some ideas for a video for
this song, but I guess it's too late). Picture a person (how about
yourself) crying. A fatherly or motherly like figure stands above you, at
first appearing sympathetic. He/she gently places his/her hand under your
chin and turns your head so that you are looking at them. A slight smile
crosses his/her face and you think perhaps he/she is going to console you.
But the only reason the person lifted your head was so that they could get
a clean shot at you and slap your face.

I don't think this song is depressing. It's about recognizing what
others do to you to prevent you from living your life the way you want to
live. Once you recognize that you can do something about it, so it's
kind of empowering.

Those are my thoughts. As Chris says in HOA, "Hands all over, words I
utter, make them into, things you want to, like balls of clay."

Ta,
Greg

MAYHEW WINS AGAIN:
"And the GOP freshmen, who are the most vulnerable incumbents
in the coming election, are also focusing on re-election. In the
early days of the revolution last year, many freshmen said they
did not care about re-election as long as they upheld their
conservative principles. It is hard to find a member claiming to
be unconcerned about an election that is now just nine months
away." CQWR, p. 281 (Feb. 3, 1996)

Hey, I was just thinking yesterday:

Didn't Badmotorfinger/Somms come in one of those archaic
cardboard long-boxes?

I think I still have it at home in my closet. I can't remember
for sure because I have bought Badmoterfinger 3 times and the box might
be from the first purchase.

Then you get to wondering: How much would Somms be worth in a
sealed long-box? Is there one on this planet?

Wait! I know it came in a long box! I remember it now. It said Limited
Edition on the top in a gold box with the red triangles on the ends and
between the songs that were on somms. It had a different back too, but
it's been so long.

Sorry to ramble so much but I have one more question:

Does anyone know anything about that extra Nevermind track that is just
noise for the most part that seems to be on every fourth album. I have
it but how rare is it? And does it make my CD worth anything? (Not that
Nirvana will ever be worth more than Somms in the original longbox . . .)

As soon as I can, I am going to start the Ben Shepherd Home Page. I
just read an article that says he hates Kiss. I could never understand
why the rest of the guys like(d) Kiss. They seem to be the ultimate Butt
Rock band. All image, no music. Wait, I take that back, AC/DC has them
beat, but just barely.

And, this was recently pondered: Half as Un-Soundgarden? It's my
favorite Soundgarden song!!!!!!!!! It captures the whole spirit of the
band and album. Sorry if it's SuperUnknown, but half rocks. Nothing
else out there today sounds close to it. It's ancient, but modern. It
reaches out, and pushes away. It's a moving contradiction. It's easily
looked over, but sticks out like a sore thumb. It's not rock, It's not
Pop, it's not Middle-Eastren Sitar Religo Music. It's soundgarden.

By the way, John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt (me) has changed his name
back to MAYOR McCHEESE (also me).

I dug through one of my friends guitar tab boxes, and I found tab for
"Half." Anyways, If I have to type up the tab for it, (even though it
so unfortunately short), i'll give myself carpel tunnel or something.
If anyone wants tab for it, e-mail me or let me know in the list.
I'll type the thing if there are enough requests, but if not, I can
photocopy it and mail it to you if you send me enough to cover postage
and photocopies (sorry, I have like NO money).

The ASCAP homepage now has a searchable database. There was some cool
info I found out:

Christopher J. Cornell wrote a song called "Message" with the band
"Flotsam and Jetsam", Jason Newsted's (Metallica) old band, though it
doesn't look like Jason Newsted was in the band at this time.

There is also something called "Singles Cues" credited to CC, I don't
know if its a song or if its something to do with the "Singles" movie
script.

Ben Shepherd's real name is Hunter Benedict Shepherd. Hunter is his
first name according to ASCAP.

On the other hand, you could be full of shit.
I checked. You are.
Try speaking for yourself. We don't all have to agree because we're all
different people. Half is perhaps one of my favorite soundgarden songs. Not
only because it sounds cool, but also because it is a hallmark of
Soundgarden's variety.
Half comes up so often because it is so unique. It's fine if you don't like
the song, just don't try to speak for everyone and pass opinion off as
fact.
