I just read Chris' response to your 'Kim is a bad guitarist' post and I
agree with him wholly. All I can add is this, how can you compare Kim to
Kurt or anyone from Green Day. Do the guys in green day know more than
three chords? Both these bands tend/tended to have very
uninspiring and repetitive backing riffs, where as Soundgarden
music is alive with chord, key and time changes . Kim is not an
MTV style guitarist who just hangs it round his neck and
strums. If you have read any of his interviews in guitar
magazines you will see that a) he takes his playing very seriously
and b) he knows a hell of a lot about the technical side of playing.
Because of this he is very well respected in real (non-MTV) music
circles (as Urbano's post illustrates), making your opinion sit in
a pretty tiny minority.

I think that we would all have to agree (at least I hope so) that
half would have to be the worst of that bunch hands down. especially in
the case of head down :) half just doesn't sound like a soundgarden
song, and more like something ben would do solo. I'm all for
experimentation, but something about that song irks me. on the other
hand, somewhere, face pollution and head down are really good songs, and
don't fool around like half does.

I'm sorry to say, I bought that album, after I heard that song..."I got

kinda liked it. I thought, "I kinda like that song, and Flea's suppose
to be on it, and I've heard some pretty good things about it." So I
bought it, instead of the new Candlebox (which I heard sucks compaired
to their first one), and Lenny Kravits (Circus). So, being the dumb
ass I am, I bought Alanis. Wow, does she suck or what? I had the same
feeling after hearing this whole album that I had after I heard Green
Day's first album. And I thought When I Come Around was a pretty ok
song. I must say, after hearing the rest of that album, I cease to
listen to Green Day. And that new song...the one with three chords
that doesn't get any better...I picked up my guitar one day when it was
on the radio and played along with it. This is without seeing music or
anything for it. That's how easy it was. And to think my cousin
thinks they're the greatest. I'll have to beat some sense

TR>For anyone who realy knows how to play the GUITAR.

I might not be very good at the guitar, but I have at least 13 years of
musical experience behind me, and I've been a fan of great music since
before I can remember, and I know a good musician when I hear one.

TR>I'd like to tell all those SOUNDGARDENER'S that all the members except chris

TR>HALEN,MARTIN FRIEDMAN..........

These are all good guitar players. Nuno is one of the best. He
combines emotional playing with technical skill. But so does Kim.
Music isn't all about being a great technical player (as someone
mentioned before), but it has to do with how someone puts their emotion
through their instrument. Kurt Cobain might not have been very good as
a technical guitar player, but he overloaded his amps with emotion,
which a lot of guitar playes lack.

TR>KIM is somthing next to kurt kokobain or the bastard of greenday with some

Ignorants? I may not be the smartest person on the list, but I sure as
hell am not ignorant. Van Halen has been on Mtv, and so has
Rhodes...probably more than Kim ever has. I know Van Halen has been
there more. But yet, he's great and Kim isn't? Maybe you're one of
those "I hate anything that has to do with Mtv" people. I know Mtv
might overplay crap like Green Day and Hootie, but just because someone
gets some airplay, doesn't mean they suck. I guess you're going to
tell us that Eddie Vedder's voice sucks and Steven Tyler's is the shit.

Hmm.. Yeah, I suppose the guitarist from Green Day would kick his arse.. Not
to mention all those shit-hot britpop blokes. I guess you haven't paid much
attention to some of his better solos..

> A guitar player is someone like NUNO BETHENCOURT(extreme),JOE

Hmm.. If they are REAL guitarists and Kim isn't, then I guess REAL guitarists
suck shit.. Most of the people you list there are the kind that I would hear,
say "Wow.. This guy can play really fast!", yawn, and listen to something
else. How can you be so taken in by these guys swollen egos.. The day one of
them writes a song that doesn't suck, I'll rate them, until then.. They suck.
I notice Jimi isn't in that list, I suppose you had to exclude him from it
because he actually played a song once. I rate Jimi, but not because he can
play really fast or anything like that, but because he can play songs well..
All these "Guitar gods" could take a leaf from Jimi when it comes to soloing,
I have never heard a gratuitous Hendrix solo, if there's a solo in a song,
then it adds to the song.. Counter example: The end of "More than words" with
that accelerating thing.. Did that add to the song? Or were you sitting there
thinking, "get ON with it".

Why the fuck do you think it is that Chris isn't replaceable? He's certainly
no guitar god, but does it matter??

> KIM is somthing next to kurt kokobain or the bastard of greenday with some
> infuences from GARTH BROOKS and ELVIS PRESILLY.
Right, fucker.. Point to the Elvis influence!!
You obviously know exactly what you're talking about.. Besides which, Kurt
could kick all the arses of the guys you listed up there if it came to
songwriting, which by the way, is the most important aspect of music. In
fact.. I will go as far as to say that the bastard of greenday could kick all
their arses too..

I don't even think you can criticise Kim that much technically.. Some of his
solos are pretty fast and, although not comparable technically to the guys in
your list, they are not to be sneezed at.. Take New Damage for an example. If
you read any of the interviews that are on the web page, you would have seen
exactly how the band feel about gratuitous solos. In my opinion, Kim has th
potential to be among the "guitar gods" but why the fuck would he want to? Who
really cares about technical ability THAT much?
>

Not every guy who can play guitar in 64ths with his teeth is a musician.. They
only appear to be so.

Am I supposed to be impressed? Do you think I CARE about the new BOSS turbo
OVERDRIVE with its distinctive low POWER attage TUBES????? Perhaps you would
like to see more people on this list talking about the latest thing to pop
into some sad guitar magazine instead of the way we feel about Soundgarden.
Shit! Did you copy that out of one of your magazines yourself? Think about

This is in response to that guy that said Kim sucked and all that
stuff.....well, I happen to be a guitarist, who happens to be able to
play Vai and Rhoads and all that...dont; get me wrong, i practically
worshipped at the Randy Rhoads alter every day for the past 6
years,playing every note....but then i discovered Soundgarden...I've
played ina 'death metal' band for the last 5 years, so all i know is 64th
notes and wailing leads...but....i realize that there is a lot more to a
song than that, which is why I love Soundgarden....i get off on Morbid
Angel and Cannibal Corpse as well, but Kim's riffs stir different, complex
emotions besides just the raw energy of any of those solo-mentality
guitarists......there was something in guitar world a while ago that comes
to mind...it went along these lines.....
There are two types of people who can play guitar: guitarists, and
musicians..the guitarist watches a band with his arms folded, looking for
that flashy solo, and scrutinizes the band if they can't or don;t do any
of this....the musician however sits back, listens to the music for
enjoyment. i think we can see what category whoever wrote that stuff
abuot Kim's playing fits in.....don't get me wrong, on a technical level,
I know Kim couldn;t come anywhere close to playing like Yngwie, bu then
again, why would he? what's the point besides showing off? I can
apprecitae technical genius, but i can appreciate a good song more.
Did people talk abuot how Picasso could paint faster than Braques? I
don;t think so....people were more interested in the beauty of their art,
not the technique that went into it.....okay. that might be a crappy
analgy, but it's late and I'm going to bed....

you must be a bit foolish or something... i'm in Holland and have heard this
for sure before you... Yes they are playing Lolla...

What i've heard also though is that they espescially asked the Ramones to

_I_ also don't care for Mike McCready's playing! It's all...rambling

Could be, Ross - I'm just trying to figure out why someone (who I can't
remember ever posting anything before and probably - hopefully? - will never
post anything) would be so naive as to send something like that when the
vast majority of people on the list AT LEAST like Kim Thayil's efforts, if
not, like me, love it. Surely he knew what sorta reaction to expect?

Unless of course you hit the nail on the head - he is a class A fucker!!!

As for Kim Thayil technically, I'll let an interview from last December's
Guitar World do the talking on Kim's attitude to speed playing etc.:

GUITAR WORLD: What does "technique" mean to you? Can technique be
differentiated from style?

THAYIL: Your lack of technique can be part of your style. The thing about
style is that it's more entertaining, more important and hopefully more
intellectual than technique. To me, technique means proficiency.
Every so often Soundgarden writes songs that are beyond our ability.
The idea is not to make things tough on yourself. Sure that's a challenge,
but it's kind of foolish and dumb. Tools are there to make it easier to
express your ideas. You don't go and try to hammer a nail with a sponge or a
basketball. Get a good hammer! People waste their time. The reason people
use alternate tunings is to make slide or playing a certain chord easier.

GUITAR WORLD: When were you aware that you were working outside the
mainstream, not that you ever worked in the mainstream?

THAYIL: Yeah, I don't think I ever did. The first year I played guitar I was
trying to get faster than Hendrix. Speed was the whole thing. You had to be
able to play really fast. That's a really immature, sophomoric approach to
music or your instrument.

I totally agree with Sean, who commented about "Spanking the Monkey"
references found in Drawing Flies. I think a number of SG songs have
an overwhelming parallel to the act. Take the song "Kickstand" and
the lyrics:

"Kickstand, you got loose and I threw up."
"Kickstand, you got the juice to fill my cup."
"Come stand me up.....Come stand me up......"

I don't know, what do you all think? Or how about BHS?
"In my eyes, in dispose, in disguise as no one knows"
"....Lies the SNAKE, the SUN in my disgrace"
"Black hole SUN, won't you COME?"

Pretty nasty stuff if you think about it that way.
Maybe I'm just sick, but it's obvious to me.

Hey list!

I know this was brought up a while back...but I dont remember seeing a reply.

The whole "90" clothing thing. Was the meaning ever revealed?

I'm sitting here studying torsion and bending moments and I put in the ToTD
album. I just noticed on the cover, landrew? is wearing a 90 shirt. I dont
think it's chris 'cause I've seen the video for the ToTD live performance
and CC wasnt wearing a 90 shirt.

Could Andy's interest in 90 be one of the reasons?
Was the 90 symbol a tribute to andy? I think it is, maybe?
Is it some pagan symbolic number?
I dont think it's a random number...It means something to someone.

Also 1990 was a shitty year for SG, They had to deal with that weenie jason
everman. If you've seen the German SG television appearance in 1990 with
everman...chris looks pale as a lightbulb. It was 2 weeks after andrew's
death and he looks like a ghost. In the vid is the first time I heard CC
sing the "jesus is my friend" chorus as he dedicates the song "I Awake" to
Andy. Then he repeats the phrase in an a cappella version as an intro to
"Beyond the Wheel" IMHO this is THE most powerful moment I've witnessed in
SG video. Also in the video, both everman and kim are wearing 90 clothing.
Hmmm...when did they start wearing it? Maybe this was a way to cast out the
demons of 1990? They did end 1990 on a high note at the bumbershoot
festival debuting ben shepherd...and they did put out the sub pop 7"....

comments much appreciated...

Wow, I think you're trying too hard. Some company makes them, and I
think it's Split. 90 is probably just a number that someone in the
company thought would be a good line of clothing. Or maybe that's when
they started making them. I dunno. I think maybe SG just like those

because they seem to wear them a lot. Anyway, I've gotta get my hands

Soundgarden is pure music as I see it while Stevie Vai's
"music" is just a bunch of advanced chords and licks.
SG is more then some chords and riffs just listen to

All I know about the 90 clothing is that it is skateboarder clothing.
It's the brand name, and they put it on their clothing as a logo. We
had wondered about that oo, until we encountered someone from Arizona
who has a relative who owns a sports clothing store, and on a past
tour, CC had gone to this store and bought hundreds of $ worth of 90
clothing. That's all I know it stands for!

Ummm... I was going to say something intelligent here, but I forgot what
it was.
Oh yah!! Regarding the supergroovycool song Exit Stonehenge:
Can someone please tell me what in the hell Chris is talking about on
it?

>Jesus I can't feel my penis
>Exit Stonehenge Exit Stonehenge
>Jesus I can't touch my penis
>Jesus I can't see my feet
>Jesus I don't like my penis
>Exit Stonehenge Exit Stonehenge

What, praytell, is this about? Maybe Chris is denying his masculinity?
Maybe he's commiserating with John Bobbit? Maybe he was just fucking around?
Maybe I'm listening to the lyrics wrong? Maybe I shouldn't have had those
margarita's with my lunch? Ahhh, well.

I used to be into skateboarding and all that good stuff, as my English

something, because it was big with the skaters :> But Soundgarden could
wear it for a symbolic reason, but doesn't Chris skate?... He
snowboards, that I know, and I read in Thrasher a long time ago on the
BMF tour, it said something like Chris had broken his wrist at a show

I was in Indianapolis over the weekend and found a record store called
"missing Link" records. It's down in the Broad Ripple area. They had
at least three copies of Screaming Life on vinyl. The prices ranged
from $10.00 to $25.00. They also had every major release on vinyl.
No bootlegs, but still a great store.

BUT, while the 90 logo is a skaters logo...there has to be some
connection between andy wood wearing a 90 shirt on the cover of the ToTD
album and every member (yes, besides chris there are 3 others, 4 if you
count J. Everman) wearing the same logo at various times for two tours.
Though I never saw a picture of Ben with the logo... Could it be as simple as
a tribute to andy? It means something....in some direct/indirect way.

Indianapolis is getting to be a pretty together city for being in the
middle of Indiana. I have been to that store and it's pretty good! I saw a
copy of Sub Pop 7" single of HIV Baby and Room a Thousand Years Wide( I
don't know if it was the purple vinyl or not) in a record store in Bucktown
in Chicago and it was $39.99. I don't collect vinyl myself( I have enough
old albums in my garage) but isn't that alot of money for 2 songs??? Just

Subject: Lolla 1996: SG and the Ramones are friends!
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

This is from imusic.com:

The Main Stage Line-up for Lollapalooza '96 is shaping up to be an
"alternative" to previous year's bills, with the announcement of
Elektra Records' artist Metallica as headliners. Soundgarden and the
Ramones have also been added to the Main Stage Line-up.

According to Lollapalooza organizer Peter Grosslight, Metallica is an
appropriate choice as a headliner: "The early response to Metallica
was, 'They're not alternative,'" he says. "Lollapalooza is, and
always has been, about curve balls. Having Metallica as a headliner is
indeed a curve ball -- very Lollapalooza." Metallica is currently in
the studio recording their latest, as-yet-untitled album, which should
be released before the Lollapalooza tour begins.

Soundgarden, who just recently entered the interactive marketplace
with the release of the CD-ROM Alive in the Superunknown, has also
finished recording their latest effort, which will be available May
21. The Ramones, who just last year called it quits, agreed to make
Lollapalooza '96 their official swan song, as per the request of their
friends in Soundgarden.

Most of the Lollapalooza '96 dates will occur in fields, as opposed to
permanent standing structures. Organizer Marc Geiger says this "allows
for the ideal Lollapalooza environment." More Main Stage and Second
Stage acts, as well as other surprise announcements for Lollapalooza
'96 to be announced on a weekly basis. Lollapalooza '96 kicks-off at
the end of June.

When asked why the band agreed to be part of the Lollapalooza troupe
Johnny Ramone answered, "We're doing Lollapalooza because Soundgarden
asked us. We like them, and it will be nice to be around friends for
six weeks. When we first announced our disbanding we had a lot of
offers, but Lollapalooza is special. Also, I think it's a better way
to hit the whole country. It seemed like it was going to be the best
Lollapalooza since the second one with Soundgarden and Pearl Jam --
which is true."

"By doing Lollapalooza we have a chance to play with some of our
friends like Soundgarden," said Joey Ramone. "It also gives us a
chance to tour the whole country one last time for all of our fans and
go out with a big bang."

I don't know what Clown thinks, but personally, I don't like Mike because I find
his leads weak. Basically, he plays a rehashed blues-style pattern in every
song.. you may like that, I don't. His wah stuff is nasty, too.

Hello. I'm listening...

> Kim is one of the worst > guitar players nowadays.

Of course, people other than me have already argued this point
backwards, forwards, and upside down. I don't want to be repetitive,
but:

Please, for the love of Pete, pull your swelled head out of your ass,
thanks.

What is your rating scale?? What is a "good" guitar player, or a
"bad" guitar player?? Yeah, Nuno, Satch, and Vai can motor on a
fretboard, but what's the point when they all sound the same?? What
was the last Vai song that ignited a musical revolution because of its
unbridled creativity?? What was the last Vai song that was truly
memorable??

I'd like you to name the last song by any artist you just listed that
created the kind of haunting, striking, and downright disturbing mood
that the relatively simplistic, yet heavy, riff from "4th of July"
does.

And, hey, Kim can play fast. He just chooses to try and work around
it (though he admits he still does it far to often... what a great
guy... :)> ). I find more influence from a player like Kim (or a
Slash, who can play fast but goes for mood instead, or Mr. Jerry
Cantrell) because I find it easier to respect his music when I know he
feels what he's playing.

I want to point out that I appreciate fast playing; it's tough to do
well. The problem is, it gets stale real quick. You see, that's why
Satch and Vai consistantly put out the same album: their albums are
simply showcases for playing prowess, rather than real music. (No
offence to any fans of either gentleman.)

> what you think of the new > BOSS turbo OVERDRIVE

I have one that I got free off of a friend, and I hate it... I don't
like the distortion sound. Now tell me again why I should care?

Hector... my advice to you is this: Open your ears.

Glenn

- -- P.S. I do, however, have great respect for both Randy Rhodes
(God bless him) and Marty Friedman.

- --P.S.S. In defence of guitar mags, most of them are focusing on
new guitarists more than "hair farmers". I have to admit, even I get
sick of reading interviews with guys who say stuff like "I don't like
lead 'cause I can't play it," and other great jems like "I can't
really play" and "There's only so much you can do with a guitar." But
most of these jokers are only cashing in on the "alternative
revolution", so I try not to give it much thought.

Oh, and Urbano? Kim was voted THE BEST alternative guitarist LAST
YEAR, to compliment his admirable placing this year. :)>
