not having looked at the liner notes today, I can't be sure if I'm
right or not, but surely chris wrote more than that seth. are you
counting songs where he co-wrote the music with someone else, like slaves
and bulldozers with ben or (not sure) superunknown with kim? he definitely
writes the lion's share of the lyrics, and I don't think there are any
soundgarden songs that are written by only one person other than chris.
whereas he has written songs like fell on black days, outshined and
fourth of july all on his little lonesome.

I agree that there a quite a few cool songs that are not entirely
chris', or even his at all (head down, room a thousand years wide), but
you have to admit that he does write a hell of a lot of material for
soundgarden. this may be only because some of the songs written by matt,
kim and ben aren't soundgardeny songs, and maybe they have taken a new
direction on the next record because they are recording more songs by the
rest of the band. I hope so, because a little variety never hurt anyone :)

  >. Sg is like a puzzle remover a piece and the picture is ruined
...........I would have to agree with that. I don't really like the
idea of band members leaving and so on once a band has really
gelled. Cos it is definitely like a puzzle; that's a good way of
putting it. People ususally say the singer is the most important
because a voice is inevitably more distinctive than an instrument,
but people's playing styles are just as important and bring just as
much to a band...(albeit in different ways).
.........I agree that sg would not be sg without Chris Cornell but I
do not agree with the idea that '' Chris Cornell is Soundgarden'' (my
friend suggested this to me over the weekend; I was not impressed..).
For example, the band would not be the same without Kim - no way...
...........When bands have to replcae members, they are lucky when
it works out. I think that Metallica, for example, were lucky in
finding Jason (tho' the band is now different from Cliff-era
Metallica), and he fits with the band (bringing his own identity
into it as well).....they haven't suffered, but I really do think
that FNM have gone downhill since the departure of Jim Martin, maybe
not even in their music but more in their ''feel''.
.....Ah, I'm talking bollocks, I'll give up now..

.......yes, but he did write the lyrics. Also, can you imagine
Chuck Mosely doing the vocals on that? It wouldn't be the same
record....the lyrics are important too, and I think that Mike's are more
intelligent, sick and witty....and this has now become one of the
band's ''trademarks''.

>Faith No More could be no longer, are bassist (Billy Gould), drummer (Mike
>"Puffy" Bordin) and keyboardist (Roddy Bottum), who met way before Jim
>Martin or Chuck Mosely even came on the scene...
......yeah, I know, and they are just as important as Mike Patton,
for example... Roddy brings a unique sound to the music - it just
wouldn't be FNM without him. But, personally, I think that the
band hit on the perfect combination when Mike Patton arrived on the
scene; you can see this in Angel Dust (which I believe to be their
best album)....by which time Mike Patton was more immersed in the
band and able to be more experimental.
.....As for Jim Martin, I would say that his departure was a shame.
It still seems unnatural without him. Sure, there was lots of
tension towards the end - I saw them live just before he was
dismissed and you could see it - but he was still a big part of the
band. I don't think KFAD....... is such a good album. It's OK -
there are some great songs - but it's not as cohesive...I am not sure
why....perhaps things will get better (it's not as if they've
released a crap album) but I really do think Angel Dust was their
peak and it doesn't look as if they'll be able to match it again.

Another Soundgarden-R.E.M.-point... the t-shirt Mr. Stipe is wearing in the
'What's the frequency Kenneth ?'-video and the one Mr. Cornell is wearing in
the BHS-video... are similar in exactly that point for which i think they
are cool... (this is the longest english sentence i've ever made i think..)
AND that point is, they are both unicolored in a darkish color, with just
one simple symbol on it.. in Mr. Stipe's case a star and in Mr. Cornell's
case a skull...

BTW : what is the general opinion of all soundgarden fans here on the Temple
of the Dog-album.. i've seen some opinions yet and i get the impression most
people think that album is significantly less good than the
soundgarden-albums... but then some people quite like it...
I think it's quite cool... soundgarden-level-of-quality...

IMHO Soundgarden is now like Led Zep was, a single unit.. If one of
it's member would leave some of the magic would be gone. The band
could go on, but it just won't be true Soundgarden....

Who would want to see SG without Kim's steady guitar work or his
penetrating eyes. Who would want to see SG without Matt's glorious
drumming or that little boy grin. Who would want to see SG without
Ben's driving bass or strange body movements. Who would want to see
SG without Chris's beautiful voice or his powerful presents.

I don't think Chris makes Soundgarden either. But if he left,
Soundgarden would be no more. They might still have a band named
Soundgarden, but it wouldn't be anything near what it is now. It is
the combined effort of all four that make Soundgarden.

Kurt Cobain said one his main influences was REM, and he was striving
to be more like them (as in put out quality music for many, many
years), unfortunately, he went and got a hole in his head, and now he
has a head like a hole. Anyway, maybe REM was a Soundgarden influence
too. I dunno. I heard Chris likes Yes, so maybe.
I just realised (I realised it before, but just didn't relate it) that
the members of Soundgarden have a pretty diverse taste in music also.
We were talking about that before, so i just decided to say it.

I love it. It's my all time favorite depressing album. I think it's

near as good as Kim, but I don't think it was Kim's style. Maybe Reach

no, i'm not. i am comparing music that he wrote alone to music that he
did not write alone. i guess i should have been a bit more specific.
granted, his input appears on several other collaborative efforts
("jesus christ pose," "slaves & bulldozers," etc.), but i'm not
counting those as Songs With Music Written By Chris Cornell. Without
him, they definitely would not exist in their current dorm, but
without any of the co-composers, they would not exist either.

> I don't think there are any

if i'm not mistaken, ben wrote "somewhere," "half," and "head down" by
himself...

> whereas he has written songs like fell on black days, outshined and
> fourth of july all on his little lonesome.

and credit where credit is due: he's a phenomenal songwriter, no doubt
about it. i wasn't trying to say that chris was a useless part of the
band, not at all, but i think we can all agree that the songs that
have been written could only have been a result of exact
circumstances. we can come up with as many theories as we want about
what would have happened or what would happen if a certain member of
the band were to leave, but it's just as likely that a rainstorm
tomorrow instead of a sunny day could have an impact on soundgarden's
songwriting.

Although the other three band members wrote a couple more songs then
Chris did collectively. All three band members contribute equally to
the sg sound. Where would they be without Matt's drumming, Kim's
guitar playing or Ben's bass Playing? The only reason imho that they
were able to get a new bassist and survive is that Ben fits into the
band better than hiro did. Just listen to most of hiro songs as
compared to Ben's, hiro's songs seem all disjointed and spacy. Ben's
songs fit into the band better. Take loud love for instance the song
wouldn't be as good without Kim modulating that feedback in the
beginning. Fobd wouldn't be as good without the rest of the guys
either. Nor would tdittl, it doesn't really matter who writes the
songs it's each band members unique take on interpreting music that
        makes sg songs great.

I like REM too, but Stipe isn't even on the same scale as Chris as far as
singing goes. The only way they compare is that they both can ellicit quite a
lot of emotion into the songs (although Ed is the guru at that).

As far as the Temple project goes, I love it. I think it was a healthy way for
Chris and Jeff and Stone to let go of a lot of the grief they'd been hanging
onto after Andy's death.

Hey all-
This conversation usually could not come up unless its over a pitcher

'Badmotor' was playing at this pub, and 'Drawing Flies' came on.
Is that song a total allegory or metaphor to spanking
the monkey? I remember reading the liner notes to 'Temple of the Dog'
or MLB's compilation CD and the members said they dabbled into masturbation
to kill time when they wern't playing basketball. The evidence is slightly
overwhelming
"Shooting my pleasure pistol"
"Wallowing in my obsenity, shooting Xs in my eyes and draw flies"
"Share a cigarette with negativity"

The topic has been discussed before, I think, I'd just like to get some

Subject: Re: LIKE GUITAR?

I had to laugh when I read this message. Yes, I play guitar to. Yes,
all of the people you mentioned are awesome guitarists - in technical
aspects. But there is more to guitar playing then the ability to play
64th notes for 5 minutes without taking a break. Kim Thayil is very
good at bringing out emotion through his guitar, he plays to the music
and for the music, he is not trying to impress anyone with lightning
fast ability, if he wanted to, he could join a band like Korn or Dream
Theater. To make someone get shivers up their spine because of a
guitar riff is as much impossible as playing 64th notes for 5 minutes
non-stop etc. etc. Many of the musicians you mentioned can do this
also, but listening to many of them is as entertaining as watching
grass grow. I would much rather listen to a song with guitar that
adds to the music then a song with guitar that draws you away from the
music. Besides, the topic in't about skill, it is about members
contributions to the writing aspects of Soundgarden - which Kim Thayil
has taken part is highly.

least in the case of extreme, have they ever written a song that didn't
go strum strum strum lead break strum strum? let's see some of your guys

Speaking of these things, does anybody know what the deal with them is? Do
you have to go to a lawyer to establish this in order to copyright all of
your songs? Or can you just mail it to yourself so you have it postmarked,
which shows that you wrote it first....well, if anyone has the answer, let
me know.

Subject: shirts

Some people have been asking me where to send money for list t-shirts, how
much they're going to cost, etc. etc.

I don't know the answer to those questions!!

I am simply gathering orders for sizes at this stage - so we have an idea of
how many we need to get made up.

First a design has to be agreed upon. Then the colour of the shirt. THEN
someone needs to volunteer to organise the printing of X number of shirts.
THEN someone needs to volunteer to mail out all these shirts, only after
each person ordering the shirt has sent in their money.

I suggest that volunteer needs to live in the USA. That's where the
majority of the list members are - would be silly (costly) for someone like
me (in Australia) to do it.

That's it for me for now

Yes! :-)

All my CDs & records are packed away along with my beloved stereo right now,
as I'm inbetween houses for a couple of months, so I can't go look
immediately. BUT I seem to recall that The Cramps use a cool music
publishing name - something like Soundgarden's above. But buggered if I can
remember what it is. Jackhammer, go look at your sister's "Stay Sick"
record for I think you'll find it on there.

See ya

I think some bands can survive a member leaving with no problem.i.e. The
Rolling Stones (because Mick and Keith are primary songwriters and most
popular) Van Halen( DLR was kind of the joke front man he's in Vegas now
isn't he?) The Grateful Dead had plenty of members die and the Deadheads
didn't notice until it was Gerry. But some bands are the sum of equal parts
and would suffer greatly.
Jamie mentioned Led Zepplin. When John Bonham died it was unthinkable for
them to go on. I think Soundgarden at this point sort of fits into that
catagory. I suppose different circumstances also apply if a band member
dies it's a little harder than just someone wanting out for whatever
reason! There is a big difference in Hiro SG and post Hiro SG but we also
have to allow for a maturing band both personally, musically and
professionally!!-T

Yeah well... strange subject line... then again:

Today in Religion 101 (Intro to New Testament... a required course at my
uni... hey, I go to school for free.. I'm not gonna complain about taking it)
we discussed what Jesus Christ looked/looks (whatever) like. I made a decent
argument of how he would resemble yours & my favorite lead guitarist: Kim
Thayill. We went into great depth on this subject a few months back I
recall. I even went as far as passing around the liner notes of BMF (which I
was conviently carrying in my back pack) presenting the megacool band photo
were Kim does in fact look (imo) like Christ. Sorry to bother y'all 'bout
that... bored I guess. And I was proud that I could connect studies of the
Bible with my beloved band. (c: Just here to destroy the monotony & morals
